‘Troops killed 100 Boko Haram insurgents, but lost 29 soldiers’ – Military clarifies

The Nigerian military said over 100 Boko Haram terrorists were killed at a clearance operation in Gorgi, but not 500 and 200 as respectively given by secondary sources.

The military explained that the updated figure contradicts the number of Boko Haram casualties given at their initial media briefing. Major General John Enenche, Coordinator of Directorate of Defence Media Operations (DDMO), who gave the clarification in a statement issued to newsmen on Friday, said the over 100 insurgents were neutralized as a result of direct fire action and encounter with gallant troops during the clearance of Gorgi between 21 and 23 March, 2020.

His words: “Following the encounter between the Armed Forces of Nigeria and insurgents in Operation Lafiya Dole at Gorgi… a team was sent to carry out the due operational after-action procedure which include, reconfirmation of casualties and immediate medical evacuation required among others.”

On the findings after the exercise, the DDMO Coordinator said: “the team made the following findings: Twenty Nine (29) Nigerian troops were killed and Thirty Nine (39) were wounded in action, as a result of the explosion of the truck carrying logistics and ammunition resupply for the fighting echelon.

“This is contrary to the figures from the first conduct situation report of Forty Seven (47) killed and Fifteen (15) wounded in action.” Enenche, who added that troops of Operation Lafiya Dole (ODL) successfully cleared Gorgi and also dealt a heavy blow on the enemies of the State, assured that the Armed Forces remains committed to decisively tackling insecurity in the country.

China, US must ‘unite to fight coronavirus’, Xi tells Trump

0

By Sylvanus Okpe

China and the United States should “unite to fight” the deadly coronavirus pandemic, President Xi Jinping of China, appealed during a call with Donald Trump on Friday, urging for improved diplomatic relations between the two leading countries of the world.

The two countries have been embroiled in a diplomatic standoff in recent weeks over the outbreak of the novel Coronaviru, and Chinese state media said Xi told Trump he hoped the “US will take substantive actions to improve Sino-US relations.”

He also called for the two countries to work together to tackle the virus and said Beijing “wishes to continue sharing all information and experience with the US”, according to state broadcaster CCTV.

Trump responded in a positive tone, tweeting that he had a “very good conversation” with Xi, and that both leaders discussed the pandemic “in great detail”.

“China has been through much & has developed a strong understanding of the virus. We are working closely together. Much respect,” he wrote.

Trump and his Secretary of State Mike Pompeo angered Beijing this month by repeatedly referring to “the Chinese virus” when discussing the COVID-19 outbreak first detected in the Chinese city of Wuhan.

Trump has since dropped the term amid accusations of racism, in another small sign of easing tensions between the two world powers.

Earlier this month a foreign ministry spokesman in Beijing also suggested in a tweet that the US military brought the virus to Wuhan.

This made Trump to accuse China of spreading misinformation, and the US president repeatedly attacked China’s lack of transparency and the slowness of its initial response to the outbreak.

Xi said Sino-US relations were at a “critical juncture”, CCTV reported, adding that cooperation was mutually beneficial and “the only right choice.”
