COVID-19: Portugal prolongs lockdown for two more weeks

0

The Portuguese face at least another two weeks in lockdown after the government decided Wednesday to extend confinement measures as deaths from the COVID-19 epidemic near 200.

The restrictions were first imposed on the 10-million population on March 19 but they have not been as extensive as in neighbouring Spain where more than 9,000 have died from the virus.

Lisbon has ordered people to stay at home unless they have to work and to go out only for exercise, within the local area, to buy groceries, help relatives or walk the dog.

Shops and restaurants have been closed but supermarkets and chemists remain open.

Prime Minister Antonio Costa announced the extension to the state of emergency, which can be decreed only for periods of two weeks, and which parliament is expected to approve on Thursday.

Costa praised his compatriots’ “exemplary” response to the crisis saying, “the effort … is bearing results”.

A total of 84 people have been stopped by police for being outside without a valid reason and 1,600 establishments have been closed after failing to ensure new client safety regulations.

TAP Air Portugal has cancelled all flights until at least May 4, except to the Atlantic islands of Azores and Madeira, and announced 90 percent of its 11,000 employees would go part-time under a government aid scheme.

COVID-19: Military dismisses trending torture video as blackmail

The Defence Headquarters (DHQ) has dismissed videos currently circulating in the social media of soldiers torturing civilians for violating the Presidential directive to stay at home over the Coronavirus pandemic as a calculated attempt to blackmail the Military.

It said that the videos are misleading and are not related to the present military engagement of the Armed Forces of Nigeria.

According to a statement by the Coordinator Defence Media Operations, Major General John Enenche,  “the attention of the Defence Headquarters has been drawn to some video clips  trending in the media.

“Consequently, the Armed Forces of Nigeria wishes to state that the videos  were old clips of past incidents that took place in 2012 and 2013 respectively.

“The clips are being used by some mischievous elements to tarnish the image of the Armed Forces of Nigeria. Those videos are misleading, as they are not related to the present military engagement of the Armed Forces of Nigeria towards the lockdown on COVID-19”.

It added that “the Nigerian Armed Forces sees those clips as calculated attempts to tarnish its professional integrity by some mischief makers.

“Members of the public are hereby advised to disregard those videos. It is the handwork of false news propagators. The Armed Forces of Nigeria remains undaunted and would not be distracted.

“Furthermore, the Armed Forces of Nigeria is committed to performing its constitutional roles towards ensuring the protection of our territorial integrity and the lives and property of the general public”.

The Chairman of Senate Committee on Judiciary, Human Rights and Legal Matters, Opeyemi Bamidele, on Wednesday donated N10 million to the state government’s campaign against the coronavirus pandemic.

The senator disclosed this in a statement in Abuja.

Bamidele’s gesture came barely 24 hours after Governor Kayode Fayemi set up an eight-man Support Account Committee to tackle the pandemic in the state.

He said: “The donation is my way of identifying with the state government and the people in combating the pandemic.

“This patriotic zeal is an additional step after all the 109 senators had resolved to donate half of our monthly salaries to the national COVID-19 Account.”

Bamidele said he had directed that N5million should be given to the state’s COVID-19 committee, while another N5 million be given to the centrally coordinated COVID-19 food Initiative in the state.

He also called on well-meaning indigenes of the state to complement the ongoing efforts of Fayemi’s administration to curtail the spread of the pandemic.

He added: “I, Sen. Opeyemi Bamidele has started by donating a sum of N10 million to fight the scourge.

“Other federal lawmakers from Ekiti will definitely do something in a matter of days as well.

“A sum of N5million has been paid into the State’s COVID-19 account while the remaining N5 million will go into the centrally coordinated food drive initiative specifically targeted at the vulnerable population in the senatorial district.

“I am appealing to other illustrious leaders, sons, and daughters of Ekiti to join hands with the state government by contributing sacrificially to the COVID-19 account to augment what the government can mobilise.

“The House of Representatives members and senators from Ekiti had since last week been distributing hand sanitisers, hand washing soaps, and buckets in their various constituencies.” (NAN)

Covid-19: Better to stay hungry to be alive than die eating, Wike tell Rivers residentsRivers State Governor, Nyesom Ezenwo Wike

By Egufe Yafugborhi – Port Harcourt

Governor Nyesom Wike Wednesday appealed for patience and support of tense Rivers state populace to defeat Coronavirus (COVID-19) as the impact of State Government preventive orders bites harder on the people.

Wike’s appeal comes as the harsh reality of the state Governor’s restrictions, especially the 24 hour curfew on specific localities in capital Port Harcourt metropolis pit the affected residents against security operatives and the Governor’s personally headed enforcement task force.

Following the perceived failure of residents to comply with government directive closing markets across the state, Wike had punitively imposed the curfew on Education Bus Stop to Agip Junction, and Obiri Ikwerre Junction to Ozuoba, Rumualogu and Choba with effect from March 31, 2020, till further notice.

By 1 April (Wednesday), over 200 defaulters have been allegedly arrested and arraigned at a Port Harcourt Magistrate Court, just as others were said to have been molested by the security operatives for wandering while some shop owners had their wares destroyed for flouting the closure of markets order.

Wike while receiving Indomie Noodles donations from Dufil Prima Foods Plc, at the Government House Port Harcourt, said he was aware of the associated hardship the people were passing through but pointed out that the sacrifice was necessary to defeat Coronavirus.

Represented by the Commissioner for Special Duties, Bariere Thomas, the Governor said, “COVID-19 is what we didn’t expect, but we are prayerful, believing the situation is not going to last forever.

“We call on our people to cooperate with government and remain at home. It is better to stay hungry and be alive than to die while eating. We expect our people to cooperate with government even as we remain prayerful”

He assure that the donated food items would be distributed to the needy, imploring more donors and non-governmental organizations to join hands with the government to ensure that the hard times being faced by the public were cushioned.

Meanwhile, on the perceived excesses of the state government and abuses by security operatives over the Covid-19 restrictions, former Spokesman of Rivers All Progressives Congress (APC), Chris Finebone chided the government for not acting with human face in the enforcement of the orders.

Finebone asked, “Did Coronavirus originate from a Rivers that so much vengeance is being visited on her inhabitants in this manner? I am no sure Wuhan (China community where the virus originated) and her residents saw what Port Harcourt residents are seeing right now.

“Nobody is saying the Governor should reinvent the wheel. Anybody effort to immobilize Coronavirus must be supported by all.

“We all support the lockdown. However, if government cannot be innovative in going about it, at least they should copy what is happening elsewhere wisely and correctly. Lockdown we se in other places have human face.”

Army Routine Deployment: A Note for Wailers & Hailers

0

By Charles Ibekwe

On Tuesday, the Nigerian Army redeployed some top generals and senior officers in a move meant to reinvigorate and enhance synergy as a tradition in its operations.

Among those redeployed is the theatre Commander of Operation Lafiya Dole, Major General Olusegun Adeniyi who until his redeployment was in charge of leading the onslaught against Boko Haram terrorists and other forms of insurgency in the Northeastern part of the country.

The redeployment of personnel came at a time the Nigerian army which has recorded several victories against the remnants of what is known as the Boko Haram, needed to reposition to round off the onslaught in strategic military style.

But because the redeployment came few days after a foiled ambush by the Boko Haram terrorists on the convoy of the now TC of Operation Lafiya Dole, it has been given all sorts of interpretation that are strange in military circles.

The Boko Haram terrorists had tried to attack the convoy of the then theatre Commander but were immediately repelled in the process as many of them fell to the superior firepower of the troops in the convoy, with a significant number fleeing and abandoning their weapons which were recovered by troops of the Nigerian army.

Unfortunately, the Nigerian army lost two of its men in the attack but the devastation in the camp of the terrorists was such that they could not re-engage the soldiers as they had wanted to but ran with their tales between their legs.

Mischief makers are however already in town with all sorts of insinuations with a certain online publication, based in the US and run by key political opposition figures in Nigeria, Sahara Reporters, leading the rumour mill by trying to link the current redeployment of personnel to that incident.

The attempt to link that foiled attack with Tuesday’s redeployment has produced a mass of rubbish that neither makes any sense nor appeals to any sense of reasoning. Apparently concocted to deceive the gullible and put the army on the defensive, many Nigerians have seen through the tale and have since written it off as ludicrous.

General Adeniyi, as stated in the release by the Army has now been redeployed from the Theatre Command in the North-east which he headed to the Army Resource Centre in Abuja while Major-General, F. Yahaya, will now lead the Boko Haram war as Theatre Commander of Operation Lafiya Dole.

The affected personnel are in high spirits because they understand that deployment in the military , the world over, is routine and is done to rekindle spirit of the officers and to enhance professionalism.

It could also involve the movement of forces within operational areas, outer positioning of forces into a formation for battle or relocation of forces and material to desired operational areas.

In the US army usage, deployment encompasses all activities from origin or home station through destination, specifically including intra-continental United States, intertheater, and intratheater movement legs, staging, and holding areas and can last from 90 days to 15 months.
It can also mean the return of service members in a combat zone to their prior station.

The current deployment of the generals as well as other top military officers in Nigeria, therefore is another normal exercise meant to reinvigorate the system for greater professional effectiveness and professional efficiency.
It is also aimed at injecting new hands to further actualize the vision of the Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant General Tukur Yusufu Buratai as Chief of Army Staff, .the Nigerian army has benefited from such movements and have helped in terms of new strategies to prosecute the war against terrorism and insurgency in Nigeria.

In 2019, the Chief of Army Staff, approved the redeployment and posting of senior officers to different positions.
In that exercise, E.O Ogunkale, a major-general, was moved from Command Army Records, Lokoja to Defence Headquarters as Chief of Defence Standards and Evaluation and A.O. Uthman, also a major-general, was redeployed from Nigerian Army School of Signals, Apapa, Lagos to Defence Headquarters as Director, Defence Communications; while Maj.-Gen. O.O Soleye was moved from Defence Headquarters to Headquarters, Command Army Records, Lokoja as Commander.

In 2018, the Nigerian Army also redeployed 103 officers including Major General Abba Dikko, the Commander, Theatre Command of Operation Lafiya Dole while a Deputy Vice Chancellor was appointed for the newly established Nigerian Army University Biu, NAUB.

In 2017 the Nigerian Army redeployed and amended postings of seven major generals, 45 brigadier generals and 597 other officers in one of its most far-reaching shake-up exercise in recent years
To further demonstrate the regularity of such exercises, the Army cancelled the redeployment of Adeniyi Oyebade, two months after he was transferred from being General Officer Commanding of Nigerian Army 1 Division, Kaduna, to Army Headquarters in Abuja as chief of logistics.
Many who are aware of military drills and operations know that deployment of personnel is a constant feature.
That is why innuendos by mischief makers and other publications like Sahara Reporters to taint the recent exercise has failed to find accommodation on the minds of rational beings.
It has been exposed as yet another attempt to find faults when there is none and a failed attempt to award credit to those fighting Nigeria where they do not deserve and it is a shameful and most unfortunate thing anybody could try to wish for his country.
