Nigeria finance ministry deletes tweet begging Elon Musk for ventilators to fight COVID-19

0

The Federal Ministry of Finance, Budget and National Planning has deleted its tweet requesting for ventilators from South African billionaire, Elon Musk.

Mr Musk, who is also a citizen of the US and Canada, had on Tuesday said his company, Tesla, would distribute ventilators to hospitals worldwide within the company’s delivery regions.

The ministry late Wednesday then tweeted in response, saying Nigeria needs about 100 to 500 ventilators to help with the fight against the coronavirus.

“Dear @elonmusk @Tesla Federal Government of Nigeria needs support with 100-500 ventilators to assist with #Covid19 cases arising every day in Nigeria,” it said.

However, a statement on Thursday by the Special Adviser, Media and Communications, to the Minister of Finance, Budget and National Planning, Yunusa Abdullahi, said the tweet was ‘unauthorised’ and had been pulled down.

“An unauthorised post was made on the verified Twitter handle of the Federal Ministry of Finance, Budget and National Planning,” he said.

“The fact of the post is regrettable because of which it is brought down.

“We have made sure our internal processes are strengthened that such doesn’t happen again. The error is highly regrettable.”

Nigerians have been dragging the ministry on Twitter, saying it should have made a formal request to the billionaire for ventilators.

Right or wrong: Nigerians debate as Min of Finance begs Elon Musk for ventilatorsMinister of Finance, Ahmed Zainab (L) and Tesla co-founder, ELon Musks (R)

By Rasheed Sobowale

Nigerians on Thursday expressed divided opinion as the Ministry of Finance through its Twitter handle solicits ventilators from Tesla, an American electric vehicle and clean energy company.

The co-founder of Tesla, Elon Musk, at 4:27 PM on Mar 31, 2020, posted on his Twitter page “We have extra FDA-approved ventilators. Will ship to hospitals worldwide within Tesla delivery regions. Device & shipping cost are free. Only requirement is that the vents are needed immediately for patients, not stored in a warehouse. Please me or @Tesla know.”

Nigeria’s Ministry of Finance via its handle (@FinMinNigeria) replied Elon Musk’s post: “Dear @elonmusk @Tesla Federal Government of Nigeria needs support with 100-500 ventilators to assist with #Covid19 cases arising every day in Nigeria.”

The tweet, however, has since been deleted by the Ministry.

“Ahh, you people have bullied Ministry of finance they deleted their tweet” -raeni   @remestardust

– Ministry of Finance like Nigerians dropping account number for giveaway –

Some Nigerians described the Ministry of Finance to have behaved similitude to Twitter users dropping their account details for “giveaway”.

“Just like some Nigerians jumping to every tweet with account number, ministry of finance jump in that tweet without reading the requirement. And if we must beg there are better ways to do this thing. Nigerians have people in high places all over the world, we can use that” -Segun | Legal   @SegunOladejo_

“Even the ministry of finance dey drop account number, so who them be ?” -Babatunde  @zidalama

– Where are the donations and budgets? –

Some Nigerians attacking the Ministry of Finance demanded the use of the donations by prominent Nigerians and the yearly budget.

The Nigerian CBN had earlier reported that the “contributions to its COVID-19 relief fund hit N15bn“.

New York Governor, Andrew Cuomo, according to a report by Independent UK claimed the price of a ventilator has risen from $25,000 (N9.2m) to $45,000 (N16.5m) due to high demand.

– Other countries are doing the same –

Other countries like Ukraine, Spain, among others are also making the same request.

Ukraine’s former minister of health, Ulana Suprun, also replied Elon Musk’s post pleading for some of the ventilators shipped to her country.

“My name is Ulana Suprun and I am the former minister of health of Ukraine. Ukraine is in dire need of ventilators. We have only 3500 in the ICUs and we have a population of 37million. Please help us!” She posted.

Ukrainian were quick to throw their weight behind her; likewise the Ukraine Embassy in the USA.

A Ukrainian health practitioner with the username, Anton_Gricunov, @AGricunov, supported Ulana request; “Mr. @elonmusk, I am an anesthetist from Mariupol, Ukraine. We have a large shortage of ventilation machines, and if you have the opportunity, please help us. Mrs. Ulyana is the person who can organize the distribution of aid throughout the country effectively.

Ukraine Embassy in USA posted: “

Dear Elon, Ukraine is the second largest country in Europe with population nearly 40 mln citizens. The pandemic situation in Ukraine is approaching its peak, April is going to be the hardest. People in hospitals need ventilators. We are ready to cooperate! Dyakuyemo!”

Spanish Congressman, Juan Luis Steegmann Olmedillas (@jlsteeg) commended Musk and informed him Spanish government will be in touch to relay their need; “Dear @elonmusk,  as congressman of the Spanish Parliament, I hugely appreciate your marvelous offer, which has been conveyed by my colleague @sanchezdelreal. We’ll launch initiatives across all the strata of the Administration to answer quickly to your generosity.”

Also, Argentine Minister of Economy, Roberto Dib Ashur (@rdibashur), requested some for his province; “Dejar Mr Musk. My name is Roberto Dib Ashur. I am the Minister of Economy of Salta Province. In the north of Argentina. I would be interested in receving ventilators for my province. Can you provide me please contact information for further details? Thanks much.”

Some Nigerians supported the Ministry of Finance while justifying their reason with the fact that other countries are doing same.

“Now that the ministry of Finance has deleted that tweet and hopefully followed the appropriate channel in requesting for those ventilators, how do you feel defending it because “other countries are doing it too”?” -Deji @xDeji

A Nigerian doctor with username Lidocaine (@trending_medic) while requesting for the ventilator took some swipes at the Federal Government; “Hi @elonmusk I’m a medical doctor and a Nigerian living in Nigeria. We need these ventilators as our government is not only wicked and wasteful but also SHAMELESS. This may just be our last hope in combating the effects of this virus. Thank you!”

Lockdown: Open food reserve centres for Nigerians now, PDP Reps tell Buhari

0

Presidency, Wole Soyinka, COVID-19Leading opposition All Progressives Congress (APC) presidential candidate Mohammadu Buhari laughs during an interview on February 6, 2015. Nigeria’s main opposition candidate Muhammadu Buhari on Friday told AFP he was expecting to win next week’s presidential election by a wide margin, despite talk of a close race. The February 14 poll, in which he is challenging incumbent Goodluck Jonathan, has been seen as too close to call, leading to a possible run-off if neither man secures a first-round majority. …task Gbajabiamila on urgent law for national price control

…demand the direct transfer of opposition salary deductions to constituencies

By Levinus Nwabughiogu

Federal lawmakers from the opposition Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, in the House of Representatives have urged President Muhammadu Buhari to immediately unlock the national food reserve agency and distribute items to Nigerians across the 774 local government areas.

This, they said, will tame the spate of hunger in the land amid the lockdown order to halt the spread of coronavirus pandemic in the country.

In a statement issued by the parliamentarians under the umbrella name “PDP House of Reps Caucus” on Thursday, signed by their leader, Hon. Kingsley Chinda (Rivers State, PDP) and made available to Vanguard in Abuja, the members said that available records indicated that compliance to total lockdown has not always been 100 per cent successful if the food question was not addressed.

While commending President Buhari for the directive during his state broadcast on Sunday, the caucus in the statement titled “Covid-19 Pandemic: A Call for Further and Decentralized Action”, also asked the National Assembly to immediately enact a law for national food prices control.

Also read: Lockdown of Lagos, Ogun, FCT: You’re wrong, Buhari is right, Malami replies Adegboruwa

The caucus said: “The Covid-19 pandemic has certainly taken our country on the emergency course, unexpected and unanticipated at the beginning of the year that strategic legal, policy and legislative responses have dovetailed into measures directed at curtailing or halting the pandemic.

“As members of the PDP Caucus of the House of Representatives, we have consistently called, and we still continue to call, for measured responses that take the poor economic conditions of Nigerians, the rights of citizens, the scaling up of the medicare framework, into account in the management of the COVID-19 pandemic.

“While many Governors have stepped away from what Professor Wole Soyinka rightly described this week as an attempt to halt the spread of the pandemic virus by constitutional piracy, we note that the absence of a structured federal response, based on the dictates of the law, may have led them to ramp up measures outside the remit of their constitutional powers.

“The rule of law has now prevailed, and it is in this light we welcome some of the measures outlined in the President’s belated broadcast and in the Regulation (Covid-19 Regulation 2020) made pursuant to Sections 2, 3 and 4 of the Quarantine Act; though the presidential broadcast and Regulation took a long time coming. Well, better late than never. While we find the measures largely satisfying, it is our considered view that the palliative measures outlined in the presidential broadcast and Regulation are not far-reaching enough, while some are completely inapplicable.

“Experiences through history have shown that citizens’ rights to movement are often heavily implicated when measures directed at halting the spread of contagious diseases and restoring public safety do not address the food question behind the curtains, worsening food security conditions.

“During the Ebola outbreak a few years ago, citizens of Liberia, Guinea and Sierra Leone openly defied the restrictions that were imposed on movement to limit the transmission of the disease, after staying indoors for a few days in hunger. We must learn quickly from these experiences by ensuring that immediate measures on food security are ramped up.

“One way of doing this is to open up our national food and grain reserves across the country and distribute food to the poorest of the poor in our country at the Local government level. The President should as a matter of utmost urgency issue an Executive Order, pursuant to his powers preserved by Section 5 of the Constitution 1999, directing the Minister of Humanitarian Affairs, National Food Reserve Agency and National Emergency Management Authority to release and manage the distribution of food in our national reserves.

“The Executive Order must set out clear consequences for breach, particularly as they relate to public officials who seize on the times to make brisk businesses and gains from the miseries of the people.

“Other measures such as food prices control should be ramped up; though specific, targeted and temporary legislation on food prices control will be needed for enforcement. This is where the National Assembly comes in – by establishing a framework of teleconferencing and social media communication, where the current lockdown and the medical advisories that bar public gatherings make it impossible for the reconvening of the National Assembly, to deliberate and pass such bills, as the Food Prices Control, Covid-19 Containment, Emergency and Disaster Management, into law.”

Also commending the Speaker of the House, Femi Gbajabiamila and the House for the timely passage of an emergency bill to provide palliatives and the donation of members’ of March and April 2020 salaries to fight the disease, the opposition lawmakers however asked that their deductions be transferred directly to their constituencies, saying they had no confidence in the sharing formula of the government.

They also warned the security operatives enforcing the stay-at-home order to restrain from using force as there would be constitutional enquiries later.

The lawmakers also reechoed their earlier demands of steady power supply, general testing for the virus and suspension of Value Added Tax, VAT, amongst others for at least two months.

“Whilst we commend the House for the emergency Bill passed on 17th March before closure to provide palliatives, these perilous times require creative thinking on the part of institutions of state and personages of power.

“Again, as a Caucus, we laud and fully align with the Leadership of the House under Speaker Gbajiabiamila in the sacrifice of donating our salaries to assist our vulnerable constituents at this trying time but we must add that the Rt. Hon. Speaker and the Leadership of the House should consider sending the deductions of our Caucus Members directly to their various States as we are most dissatisfied with the distribution of palliatives by the Federal Government.

“We do hope that the leaderships of both arms of the National Assembly will accept our request for legislative response and intervention and quickly too.

“Finally, as we all enter day three of the national lockdown, we call on law enforcement personnel to exercise restraint in enforcing the restriction of movement everywhere. The right to life and dignity of Human Person as enshrined in our Constitution hasn’t been suspended, so they must continue to display professionalism in the discharge of their duties and ensure they keep our constituents out of harm’s way, as it is easy for them to become vectors or super-spreaders of the virus if they don’t abide by the guidelines issued by the National Centre for Disease Control. We will frown at and exercise our constitutional powers as legislators to address any unreasonable act by the Security Officers in enforcing the lockdown.

“Consequently and in line with our Release of 20th March 2020, we demand as follows:

“That the Federal Government should maximise the 2 weeks lockdown and open up free testing and treatment centres in all zones in the country; step down VAT and give partial tax holiday on essential commodities for 2 months; make electricity available and free for citizens within the period of total lockdown; disburse the sum of 5 billion Naira as business loans in every State of the Federation to stimulate SMEs and business in the country.

“The House of Representatives should send directly to the various States the donations of their State Representatives; come up with additional Emergency Bills to address price regulation of essential materials (Medicals and Food).

“We join other well-meaning persons to salute our Doctors, Nurses, Medical Personnel and Volunteers, working assiduously to help the nation beat the virus while putting their personal safety and lives at risk. Their glorious efforts will never be forgotten by all. We are grateful”, the caucus added.

COVID-19: British Airways lays off 36,000 employees

0

British Airways is set to release no fewer than 36,000 staff, from cabin crew to ground staff, engineers and head office employees, due to the coronavirus pandemic.

The aviation industry has been hit hard by the travel restrictions imposed because of the coronavirus crisis.

Thousands of staff have been temporarily laid off or are taking unpaid leave.

BA, which grounded its planes at Gatwick this week, has been negotiating with the Unite union for more than a week.

The two sides have reached a broad agreement but still need to hammer out some details. A BA spokesperson said: “Talks continue.”

Under the agreement, up to 80% of BA’s 45,000 employees will have their jobs suspended, but it is thought that there will be no redundancies.

At Gatwick and London City airport, all BA staff will be suspended after the airline stopped flying to and from both airports until the end of the virus crisis. It is still running services at Heathrow.

A spokesperson for the union said: “Unite has been working around the clock to protect thousands of jobs and to ensure the UK comes out of this unprecedented crisis with a viable aviation sector.

“Talks with British Airways are ongoing, and Unite’s priority is always to communicate with our members, who are very anxious at this time but who understand the work that Unite is doing to protect jobs, incomes and futures.”

COVID-19 Lockdown: Nigerians express satisfaction, hails Army’s conduct

0

By Bunmi Olasanmi

In the wake of the breakout of the Coronavirus pandemic ( COVID-19) globally, the federal government of Nigeria has initiated measures towards the containment of the further spread of the virus. President Muhammdu Buhari consequently imposed a 14-day lockdown in the federal capital territory-Abuja, Lagos and Ogun states.

A section of the country hailed this move by the president and as well criticized by others citing the effect the lockdown would have on the polity. This medium consequently investigated the level of compliance in the Federal Capital Territory and environs.

In the Federal Capital Territory, it was observed that the level of compliance was over 95% with officers and soldiers of the Nigerian Army and other security agencies seen at strategic places within the federal capital territory enforcing the lockdown.

Those that were granted clearance to move were mostly those rendering essential services. This medium sampled the opinion of some persons as regards the directive of the federal government on the containment of the Coronavirus pandemic, and the responses were indeed satisfactory.

According to Mrs. Hannatu Yakzum, a nurse with one of the public hospitals in Abuja, she expressed satisfaction with the level of compliance so far, indicating one of the ways the coronavirus could be contained is when people stay indoors.

“The lockdown is necessary given the fact that the virus spreads upon contact and the World Health Organization has stated there is a need for people to maintain social distancing by staying in their homes for a certain period. The federal government has done well in this regard, even though it would be difficult to observe 100% compliance.”

“As you can see, there is a strong presence of soldiers at strategic places within the city, and they have denied access to those that do not have any business outside. This is quite commendable.”

Another respondent interviewed in the Asokoro area of the federal capital territory believed that mandating the Nigerian Army to enforce the sit-at-home order is one of the best decisions given the attitude of Nigerians to obeying instructions.

“The coronavirus is real and a global pandemic. As we all know, it takes great efforts for Nigerians to obey instructions most times. So the deployment of soldiers is appropriate, and that is why you could see this level of compliance. I am not sure the police would have achieved this much.

It was also observed that soldiers who mounted checkpoints at the City Gate were seen screening motorists in an orderly manner while maintaining social distancing. Mr. Abayomi Lawal, a security operative with Nizamiye Hospital, stated that the soldiers were conducting themselves with care with the kind of questions been asked and the level of distancing maintained.

“We are gradually getting it right in this country; you must agree with me that if this were to be in time past, you must have received some merciless beatings before questioning by the soldiers. But this time around, you could see the decorum displayed by the soldiers. Those without a genuine reason to be on the road are advised to turn back and go home.”

“The level of organization displayed by the soldiers at the city gate is responsible for the orderliness experienced here. As you can see, those cars turning back are those that were denied access by the soldiers.”

However, for Mr. Kunle Ifedayo, a welder residing along the airport road, it wasn’t a pleasant experience he had with the soldiers at the Zuba axis of the federal capital territory. He stated that the soldiers meted out stringent punishment to those they found on the roads.

“I was asked to sit on the bare floor for over an hour by the soldiers. I was on my way to Zuba to quickly buy some materials to complete a job so that I can have some money. I explained to the soldiers, but they won’t listen. They said I have flouted the presidential directive and asked me and some others to sit down on the floor. I think that was too harsh since we were going to buy work materials and not traveling.”

This was not the case for Mr. Stanly Rotimi, a building contractor who was forced to push his car backward for one kilometer for flouting the sit at home directive. According to him, he was on his way to one of his building sites in the Lokongoma axis of Abuja when some soldiers stopped him.

“I was asked of my mission, and I informed them that I was on my way to the site. They asked if I was going to work alone and I informed the soldiers that my workers were already waiting for me at the site. They told me I had no businesses gathering people at this period and was asked to push my car backwards for close to one kilometer. I almost died until an officer beckoned on me to stop and offered me water to drink.”

“In truth, I didn’t know my action violated the government sit at home order, even though I think the approach of the soldiers was very harsh. I could have died in the process of pushing my vehicle all by myself. I am appealing to the relevant authorities to caution the soldiers as it is not everyone on the road that is healthy.”

Our reporters also observed that within the federal capital city that consists of Wuse, Maitama, and Garki, a strong military presence was noticeable at strategic places. It was noted that the soldiers accosted those on the road, and those with the genuineness of reasons to be out were granted passage and while those without any cogent reason were asked to return home.

For Ms. Ada Onyeakachi, a telecoms worker, it was reassuring to see the way and manner the Nigerian Army exhibited decorum in their conduct. She believed that, indeed, things have changed in the operations of the Nigerian Army.

“It was hard to believe I was in Nigeria with the way and manner I was approached by soldiers on my way to work. The decorum was impressive and they as well maintained social distancing with face masks on. I think Nigeria is making progress.”

When our reporters visited the Karu axis of the FCT, it was observed that soldiers mounted checkpoints and ensured that those with legitimate business outside were granted permission into the FCT. Quite many vehicles were turned back.

Some of those our reporters interacted with expressed satisfaction with the conduct of the soldiers. They stated that there were no displays of hostilities as typical in times past. Mr. Ephraim Oguche, who was one of those denied passage, said that he was impressed with the conduct so far.

“I don’t feel bad in any way, but instead glad I was treated courteously by the soldiers. Upon interrogation, they pointedly told me I had no business outside and that I should return and stay with my family. I didn’t argue with them as I know they were only doing their job in the interest of the country.

Our reporters also gathered from credible sources that the military high command issued a directive that under no circumstance should motorists be subjected to any form of torture. Our source who pleaded anonymity stated that it would have been impossible for the soldiers to go contrary to the directive issued by the military hierarchy.

“The conduct of the military personnel on the streets was as a result of the directive issued that under no circumstances should any citizen is harassed on the street. The instruction was clear. Those on essential duties should be granted passage, and those without any genuine reason should be asked to return home.”

“I think to a large extent that has been the order of the day, except for a few cases where some soldiers would attempt to go extreme in their conduct.”

This medium also interacted with scores of people at different locations within the FCT, and the generality of the respondents expressed satisfaction with the implementation of the lockdown by the relevant security agencies.

This was against the initial apprehension expressed in some quarters with the implementation of the lockdown by the relevant security agencies. The military command has, by their action, displayed an enviable level of professionalism.

PMS: IPMAN to comply with N123.5/litre price regime but…- Engr. Fari

0

By Dirisu Yakubu

In a release in Abuja made available to journalists on Thursday, national President of the association, Engr. Sanusi Fari, however called on relevant stakeholders in the nation’s petroleum industry to always carry IPMAN along in their decision making process.

According to him, members of the association were already feeling the heat occasioned by last week’ reduction of the pump price from N145 to N125 when government further announced a down review review on Wednesday.

The statement read in part: “We want the Petroleum Products Pricing & Regulatory Agency, PPPRA, and other relevant agencies to always carry us along as one of the major stakeholder in the downstream in future strategic decisions of this nature (reduction of pump price).

“The National Executive Committee, NEC, of IPMAN once more commends the federal government of Nigeria for the further reduction of pump price of PMS to N123.50k from N125 per litre.

“We remain grateful to President Muhammadu Buhari for this approval which will further lessen more burden on the masses.

“As law abiding citizens, our members shall comply immediately.”

Engineer Fari called on government to however remember that most of IPMAN members sourced funds from commercial banks at high interest rate, adding that the development was the reason the association pleaded to be allowed to exhaust its stock before the commencement of the new price regime.

He continued: “The previous reduction affected our members so much that many lost funds which did not go down well with members. Most members deal on borrowed funds from banks with interests.

“We had earlier pleaded then, that some time be given to us to exhaust the old stock which we did not get any response.

“We call on our members to continue to serve the public based on the new price template by selling between N123.50k and N125 per litre.”

Ensure Transparency in N500M relief fund, KADSPAC tells El-Rufa’i

2023: VON boss lauds El-Rufai over support for rotational presidencyKaduna State Governor, Nasir El-Rufai

By Ibrahim Hassan

A group, the Kaduna Social Protection Accountability Coalition (KADSPAC) has advocated for social accountability and transparency in the distribution of relief materials to vulnerable groups in Kaduna state.

KADSPAC, in a statement signed by the Chairperson, Jessica Bartholomew, said  the Kaduna State Government must  ensure social accountability and transparency in the distribution of relief materials to poor and vulnerable households largely affected by the total lockdown of the state as part of measures to prevent the spread of Coronavirus pandemic in Kaduna State.

“KADSPAC, is a network of active civil society and media partners working collaboratively to strengthen transparency and accountability in the Social Protection system in the State,” she said.

According  to her, the coalition has the goal of ‘improved coordination and delivery of Social Protection programmes to benefit poor and vulnerable people in Kaduna state’.

“We need to jointly confront and defeat the spread of the deadly Coronavirus (Covid-19) ravaging the world. For us in Kaduna State, the Government has continued to take proactive measures to stop the spread of the virus among its citizenry as well as the laudable step to put relief measures in place to cushion the impact of the current lockdown across the state. ”

“We commend Governor Nasir El-Rufai and his Covid-19 emergency team for being decisive in communicating preventive measures that have culminated into the imposition of indefinite curfew on the State, as best alternative to preventing the spread of the virus in the state.”

“Equally important is the palliative measures being taken to cushion the effect of the lockdown, particularly on the most vulnerable groups in the State.”

“According to the Commissioner, Ministry for Human Services and Social Development, Hajiya Hafsat Baba, a sum of N500 million has been earmarked for the procurement and distribution of relief materials in eight pilot local government areas which are: Kaduna North, Kaduna South, Igabi, Chikun, Zaria, Sabon Gari, Kaura and Jema’a, covering the three (3) geo political zones.”

“This is timely and a right step in the right direction, as residents of the State have expressed serious concern over growing hunger, particularly among the poor and vulnerable households/groups in our communities due to the lockdown. This quick response did not come as a surprise as the government has already initiated the process of establishing a social protection system in the State.”

“However, while we are fully aware that due process and procedures in unusual times like this might be suspended in order to effectively confront humanitarian emergencies, the government needs to strengthen its fiscal transparency and accountability instruments.”

“In addition, the deployment of information and communication mechanism are critical at ensuring citizens and civil societies are carried along in the interventions.”

“However, as a Coalition advocating for transparency and accountability in the Social Protection system in the State, we have made the following observations:”

READ ALSO: 25m to lose jobs globally over COVID-19 – ILO

“We are concerned at the low level of information dissemination on the modalities for the distribution of relief materials in the pilot local government areas.

“There are fears that the composition of the state and local government committees is without the inclusion of active civil society, people with disabilities and media partners with the capacity to effectively proffer solutions, track and ensure that the relief materials get to the target beneficiaries.

As you are aware, the State government has signed unto the Open Government Partnership (OGP), which is a commitment to reforms that ensure active citizen’s access to information and participation in government’s decision-making processes.”

“The modalities for the constitution of the distribution clusters and the committees in the benefiting local government areas as well as the identification and selection of targeted beneficiaries were not clear.

“There are fears that the intervention might be hijacked by politicians with vested interest as the composition of the committees is rumored to include local government chairmen of the ruling political party. Some vulnerable groups are already concerned that they might not benefit from the intervention,” she said.

The group expressed optimism that the State Steering Committee will consider and take appropriate actions on the above concerns to ensure a hitch free distribution of the relief items.

The group however,  recommended, among others, inclusion of civil society and media partners with a track record of tracking governance processes in all the relevant committees and clusters.

Mr. Elijah Mohammed, Registrar, Pharmacists Council of Nigeria (PCN), has appealed to pharmacists to ensure the availability of essential medicines and commodities such as hand sanitisers and face masks at reasonable prices to the general public.

Mohammed made the appeal in a statement made available to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Abuja on Thursday.

The registrar commended Nigerian pharmacists on the role so far played toward the control of the COVID-19 pandemic in the country through small scale compounding and production of hand sanitisers as well as public enlightenment/awareness on the disease.

I’m still governor, Bala Mohammed declares from isolation

0

By Bukola Olasanmi

Governor Bala Mohammed of Bauchi State has declared that he is doing well, responding to treatment and still in charge as the Chief Security Officer of the state.

The governor, in a two-minute video he sent to the people of Bauchi State via his Twitter handle on Wednesday evening, thanked people of the state for standing by him in this trying moment saying that the solidarity has further lifted his desire to do more for the state.

Mohammed, who spoke in Hausa language in the video, reassured people of the state that he is responding to treatment well and will soon be out of isolation to enable him to continue with his official duties as the governor, stressing that even now he is in charge of running affairs of the state in the proxy.

The governor commended the Rapid Response Taskforce headed by the Deputy Governor, Sen Baba Tela for doing a wonderful job of curtailing the spread of the virus through sensitisation, mobilisation and surveillance.

He, however, appealed to the people of Bauchi State to as a matter of necessity adhere to all the preventive measures put in place by the government in order to check the spread of the infection urging them to observe the stay at home directive during the 14 days of the total lockdown of the state effective from Thursday.

It will be recalled that the governor tested positive to COVID-19 about two weeks ago and has remained quarantined while medical experts have been attending to him.
