Senate Confirms President Tinubu’s INEC Commissioner Nominees

0

On Wednesday (today), the Nigerian Senate approved the Independent National Electoral Commission’s (INEC) selection of five resident electoral commissioners (RECs).
This confirmation was said to have occurred following the presentation of the INEC report by the Senate committee during today’s plenary session.
Chukwuemeka Obeziako, Umar Yusuf Garba, Sa’ad Umar Idris, Umar Mukhtar, and Johnson Alalibo Sinikiem are the people who have been verified. The 1999 Constitution’s modified clause 154(1) was followed in making these appointees.

The committee confirmed that the nominees met the requirements for their positions, under the direction of Senator Sharafadeen Alli of Oyo South. Each of the recently appointed RECs is expected to hold office for a period of five years.

The Senate received a letter from President Bola Tinubu on March 18 containing the nominees for the new RECs.

“In accordance with section 154(1) of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999 (as amended) constitution, I am pleased to submit to the Senate for confirmation the appointment of the following five (5) nominees as Resident Electoral Commissioners in the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC),” the letter states.

“The distinguished Senate is invited to take note that I have approved the re-appointment of the Borno State commissioner for a second term, and this letter supersedes my previous one referred to as pres134/2 dated March 12th.”

Imo People Deserve Competence, Not Waste – PDP Faults Uzodinma’s N2.1 Billion Hajj Spending

The Imo State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has denounced the Hope Uzodimma-led government’s decision to spend an astounding ₦2.1 billion on Muslim pilgrimages and throw a party to celebrate the pilgrims’ airlift.
In regard to the airlift of the pilgrims, the party contended that there is no reason why the administration should spend taxpayer funds on a program that serves just 315 people and throw a lavish celebration to welcome Vice President Kashim Shettima.
In a statement released in Owerri by its spokesperson, Lancelot Obiaku, the PDP called the gesture a waste of money, particularly in light of the nation’s escalating security threats and economic suffering brought on by the country’s skyrocketing inflation rate.

He bemoaned the fact that it was particularly alarming and unsettling because it happened the day after armed attackers besieged the settlements of Umuna and Okigwe in Onuimo LGA, murdering at least 20 people, kidnapping others, and burning more than 22 vehicles.

He insisted that Uzodimma retire after accusing him of egregious ineptitude.

“We vehemently condemn the fact that Governor Uzodimma frequently acts as though he is not an Imolite, consistently reluctant to offer leadership or express empathy over the harrowing challenges of insecurity, poverty, and lack of basic amenities confronting the people of Imo State,” the statement says in part.

“Normally, the threat of suspected Fulani terrorists in NgorOkpala would have prompted the governor to act quickly, since the ruthless outlaws have made the area their stronghold.

In Okigwe, Orsu, Njaba, Onuimo, Oru West, and Orlu LGAs, criminal groups have taken over communities and are still terrorizing innocent inhabitants. This adds to the sad stories coming out of these areas.

“Imo cannot put up with a distant administration that doesn’t care about the suffering of its people and an inept governor. Therefore, the Imo PDP urges Ndi Imo to band together in order to hold this administration completely responsible at this crucial juncture in the history of our state.

Labour Party Chairman Abure Warns Peter Obi, Otti, Others of Looming Exposé

Julius Abure, Labour Party National Chairman, has issued a direct challenge to Peter Obi and other previous presidential contenders running on the party’s platform, demanding that they present documentation of any money allegedly handed to him or the party during the 2023 general elections.
Abure made the statement during a Symfoni video broadcast on Tuesday, where he addressed party members in the Federal Capital Territory and responded to ongoing corruption allegations against the party’s leadership.
Naija News believes that he categorically denied accepting any monies for personal use from any of the party’s candidates, including Obi.

“I want to challenge everyone who contested the election, from Peter Obi on down. “Let any of them come out and tell the world what they personally gave to me or the party,” Abure said.
“If they have evidence, let them to present it. If they don’t, let them remain silent indefinitely.”

He denounced what he called “cowardly whispers” of corruption and accused adversaries of using the media to avoid facing the party leadership directly.

Abure also hinted about hosting a world news conference, promising to publicly reveal members of the party’s opposition wing.

He claimed he remained silent out of a feeling of leadership and a desire for reconciliation, but cautioned that further provocation might force him to speak up.

“When people were discussing agents and money for agents, I remained silent. I feel it is my responsibility to manage the good, the terrible, and the ugly. “But now, some are going beyond their limits,” he said.

“I’m waiting for them to make their next move. When I open my mouth, wherever they go, they will smell like rotten eggs that no one wants.”

Abure also criticised Abia State Governor Alex Otti, the Labour Party’s only elected governor, accusing him of failing to contribute financially to the party during the elections.

“Look at the governor, who is moving like a cricket from one spot to another. “We didn’t get a dime from him,” he explained.

“When I saw him at Transcorp, he said, ‘Chairman, what can I do for you?’ I said nothing. “Use your funds for your election.”

He also noted that, other from a few MPs who gave little funds, the party has gotten no significant backing from elected members.

Abure denied allegations of financial misconduct, stating that the Labour Party leadership declined multi-billion naira bribes during the election season.

“We turned down offers due to the integrity of the positions we held. But today, these same people are attempting to kick us out,” he stated.

Soludo Under Fire from YPP Candidate on Education Issues

Sir Paul Chukwuma, the Young Progressives Party’s (YPP) candidate for governor of Anambra state in the November 8, 2025, election, has criticized state governor Prof. Chukwuma Soludo for the state’s low student performance on the recently released National Examination Council (NECO) and Join Administration and Matriculation Board (JAMB) exams.

Cancel Chukwuma expressed regret that Anambra State, which had topped the national ranking for over ten years in a row, had unexpectedly dropped to 28th place in the most recent statistics.

“Today, we have seen a shocking decline in some of the key indicators of development in our State,” the YPP candidate for governor stated in a statement Tuesday.

Anambra State was formerly the leader in education for more than ten years, but the current administration has let this progress wane.

“Anambra State’s education rating has suffered greatly in recent years, to the point where our state now lags behind Abia, Imo, and Ebonyi States in terms of student performance.” With pupils earning five credits on their senior certificate exam, Anambra State was unable to make it onto regional and national lists of the best states during the current administration. This is the worst it has been in almost ten years.

“This is a fragmented promise. Now a gain has been lost. We as a people see it as a warning sign for our State and our children’s future,” Sir Chukwuma continued.

Chukwuma, however, promised that his administration will undo the regrettable event if elected to power.

Dangote Group: Boosting Nigeria’s SME Sector

According to Fatima Wali-Abdurrahman, Senior Advisor to the President of the Dangote Group, Dangote Industries Limited is collaborating with important economic players to expand Micro, Small, and Medium-Sized Enterprises (MSMEs) throughout Nigeria.

She said the company’s involvement and collaboration with the Nigeria Association of Small-Scale Industrialists (NASSI), Nasarawa State Chapter, will aid in raising awareness and growing small businesses during the Dangote Special Day at the ongoing 2025 Nasarawa Trade Fair Exhibition in Lafia.

Speaking on behalf of the company’s National Assembly Liaison Lead, Hon. Dr. Shuaibu Abdullahi, the Senior Adviser stated that Dangote Group will keep collaborating with the public and private sectors to support small business development.

In accordance with the theme of this year’s Trade Fair, the Aliko Dangote Foundation and the Bank of Industry (BoI) have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) and created a N5 billion fund to support MSMEs throughout Nigeria, she said.

“By offering financial assistance to entrepreneurs involved in manufacturing, agro-processing, and the merchandising of products made entirely in Nigeria, this initiative sought to create at least one million direct jobs.”
She went on to say that the MoU benefited micro-enterprises such as market women and artisan groups, poultry farmers, calabash carving groups, small traders, cattle rearing groups, vegetable dealers, and cassava processors.

She said the company has assisted Jakura Marble Industry Ltd (JMIL) with electrification as part of its support for MSMEs in Nigeria.

She also mentioned that Dangote Fertilizer Limited had started a thorough training program aimed at more than a million farmers nationwide, in keeping with the company’s dedication to assisting small enterprises, agriculture, and job creation in Nigeria.

“This program, which is essential to our agricultural extension services, includes soil sample collection, field demonstrations, result demonstrations, and spot demonstrations.

In order to increase crop yields and advance sustainable farming methods, the program aims to teach farmers the optimal fertilizer application strategies. We aim to equip farmers with the information and resources they need to increase their output and standard of living by offering practical demonstrations and soil analysis.

“This initiative demonstrates our commitment to supporting Nigeria’s agricultural development and economic expansion.”

She claims that the company has made several contributions to “Fostering Economic Development Through Mineral and Agricultural Cottage Industrialization.”

I would also like to let this distinguished audience know that one of the main ways we support the expansion of trade and small enterprises in Nigeria is by sponsoring a number of trade fairs, such as this one hosted by the Nigerian Association of Small-Scale Industrialists (NASSI).

By sponsoring this Trade Fair, we hope to give MSMEs a stage on which to display their goods, connect with possible partners, and enter new markets—all of which will help the country’s economy grow.

Thus, as a business, we are joining NASSI and NACCIMA in urging stakeholders in the public and private sectors to give MSMES in Nigeria top priority. This is essential to Nigeria’s industrialization efforts.

Among the Dangote Group’s Strategic Business Units, she said, are Dangote Fertilser Limited (DFL), Dangote Peugeot Automobiles Nigeria Limited (DPAN), Dangote SinoTruck, Dangote Sugar Refinery (DSR), Dangote Salt (NASCON), and Dangote Cement Plc.

APC Leader Aliyu Disagrees with Ganduje, Says One-Party State is Harmful to Nigeria

Umar Ganduje, the chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), has come under fire from Farouk Aliyu, a founding member, for making a one-party state remark.
The previous House of Representatives Minority Leader reportedly stated that Ganduje’s stance on a one-party state did not reflect the party’s stance.
In an interview with Arise News on Tuesday, Aliyu justified the decision of opposition lawmakers to join his party.

“Undoubtedly, a one-party state is not ideal for us. We in the APC are not considering a one-party state. The statements made by Ganduje are his own. He stated, “Even if he is our leader, the APC does not hold the view that a one-party state is desirable.

He claimed that the opposition parties were in charge of maintaining order in their homes. On the other hand, he stated that the nation’s democracy would suffer if all politicians joined the APC.
But please understand that if someone runs to APC, it is not our fault. Prior to becoming a member of the ruling party, we were in opposition and remained so. with all of the threats and so forth. There is nothing we can do to stop members of the PDP or other parties from joining us.

But in all honesty, our democracy is not strengthened by everyone joining the APC. Additionally, democracy allows people to express their opinions. For example, “Since you are all in the APC, we will vote for any other party instead of the APC.” People will choose who they vote for, so don’t be afraid of this. The people will choose who to support when it comes to voting, regardless of if 90 percent of Nigerians choose to join the APC in terms of numbers, he said.

Nigerians, not party allegiance, should determine the outcome of elections, the chieftain of the Jigawa State APC said.

He urged Nigerians who are unhappy with politicians who have switched parties to vote them out.

When elections are held, the Nigerian people have the opportunity to decide if they can’t handle the flurry of activity. Did the previous governor of Kebbi State feel intimidated when the other person talked about it? A sitting governor was overthrown by this individual. In his bid to become a senator, he defeated our current governor of Kebbi State. He has now chosen to join the APC. When you consider all of them, what are we at fault for? They’ve accepted what our government is doing, and that’s the fault,” he remarked.

Nasir El-Rufai, a former governor, defected to the Social Democratic Party (SDP) after not being appointed a minister, the former member of the House of Representatives said.

“He would not be speaking in this manner if he were a minister. We haven’t yet witnessed an elite like this resigning from a position of power. From my perspective, El-Rufai is raving just because he lost out, he continued.

BREAKING: Reps Dismiss Bill Seeking Rotational Presidency System

The 1999 constitution would have been amended to create a rotating system for the president and vice president’s positions across Nigeria’s six geopolitical zones, however the House of Representatives voted against the plan.

According to reports, Deputy Speaker Benjamin Okezie Kalu introduced the proposal, which was named “A Bill for an Act to Alter the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Cap. C23, Laws of the Federation of Nigeria, 2004 to Provide for the Principle of Rotation of the Offices of the President and the Vice President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria among the Six Geopolitical Zones of the Country, Namely: North Central, North East, North West, South East, South South, and South West and for Related Matters” (HB. 2291).

On the House Order Paper, this bill was one of seven proposed constitutional amendments that were set for a second reading on Tuesday, May 13, 2025.

The House Leader read the legislation’ titles, and then the Deputy Speaker, who was chairing the session, asked the members to comment on the ideas.

The bill was opposed by Representative Aliyu Madaki (NNPP, Kano) during the discussion, who claimed that the issues it sought to address were adequately addressed by the current constitutional principle of federal character.

He argued that there was no need to include such a clause in the constitution and that the choice of where to locate the president should be left to individual political parties.

Rep. Ali Isah (PDP, Gombe) disagreed with Madaki’s position, arguing that changing the constitution to include rotating presidency will make all geographic zones more equitable and inclusive.

Rep. Sada Soli of the APC in Katsina, meantime, also rejected the bill, claiming that it would undermine national unity and could lead to mediocrity being valued more highly than leadership ability.

Ethnic and regional interests could be prioritized over competence. According to Soli, it will promote regional rivalry and a narrow selection of candidates for office, undermining the spirit of oneness.

In response to Soli’s position, Kalu argued that each geopolitical region in the country has competent people who are qualified to serve as president and vice president, rejecting the idea of encouraging mediocrity.

The goal of the measure, he emphasized, is to ensure that every region of the nation may take part in national growth and rule. The law was opposed by Representative Shina Oyedeji, who stated that vigorous competition is the foundation of democracy.

“Everyone should have the opportunity to run for election whenever possible,” he argued, challenging democratic norms by adding zoning and regional feelings.

Rep. Bello El-Rufai (APC, Kaduna) also opposed the bill, stating that because of the nation’s unique ethnic terrain, instituting the rotating presidency principle in the constitution could exacerbate regional and ethnic tensions.

The majority of parliamentarians voiced their opposition to the bill with “nays” after the Deputy Speaker called for a voice vote after heated debates. A later decision by the Deputy Speaker favored the nays.

Breaking: 2026 Elections: Osun Assembly Affirms Support for Adeleke with Confidence Vote

The members of the Osun State House of Assembly have jointly voiced their support for Governor Ademola Adeleke, backing him for a second term ahead of the 2026 governorship election.
Adewumi Adeyemi, representing the Obokun State Constituency, sponsored the motion for this vote of confidence, which was seconded by Taofiq Olayiwola of the Ede South State Constituency.
This endorsement was claimed to have occurred during a plenary session on Tuesday, when the 26-member Assembly, which included 25 members of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and one member of the All Progressives Congress (APC), demonstrated their unshakable support for the governor.

During the session, Speaker Adewale Egbedun praised the governor’s accomplishments on the occasion of his 65th birthday, recognizing his dedication to the progress of Osun State and his five-point plan.
The Speaker stated that the MPs, as representatives of the people, are proud of the governor’s leadership and encourage him to achieve even greater success.

Following the motion, the Speaker requested a vote, which the chamber approved.

Tinubu’s Administration Failing on Security – Sowore Raises Alarm Over Expanding Terrorist Control

0

The administration of President Bola Tinubu has come under fire from well-known Nigerian activist and former presidential candidate Omoyele Sowore for the ongoing security problem in the country.
He mentioned a recent terrorist assault in a video clip that went viral in a post on his X account.
He criticized Tinubu’s administration for being ineffectual and warned that if the problem is allowed to worsen, other areas of the nation could come under terrorist control.

He claims that the nation does not yet have a clear leadership direction to address the security issues.

According to his post, “Nigeria’s security situation has drastically worsened under the corrupt and ineffectual @officialABAT regime, raising the possibility that more significant areas of Nigeria could come under terrorist control, as has been the case in Syria.”

At the moment, Nigeria lacks a clear leadership orientation. “#RevolutionNow.”

According to Sowore, Peter Obi, the 2023 Labour Party (LP) presidential candidate, cannot be considered the opposition.

Speaking on Channels Television, he maintained that Obi has not demonstrated any opposition to the ruling class.

Ahead of the general elections in 2027, Sowore rejected claims that Obi would continue to be the most conspicuous representative of the opposition. He also reaffirmed his long-standing skepticism regarding the political intentions and influence of the former governor of Anambra State.

But when it comes to actual opposition,” he said. Why Peter Obi being referred to as an opposition figure is beyond me. He has nothing against the actions of the government. He did not rally his followers to carry out his declared electoral triumph.

When the price of gasoline rose, he remained silent. Nothing that an opposition figure usually does has been done by him.

As I stated in 2022 and 2023, the current situation is that, despite the perception that Peter Obi was against the system and able to challenge it, he is actually unable to do so.

Additionally, I stated at the time that the Labour Party was a short-term rental, or what Americans refer to as Airbnb. When your allotted time is up, you check out.
The rental will be transferred to someone else once they have finished using Peter Obi. Obi may be staying for show or may not want to leave just yet, either way.

Additionally, Sowore contended that religious sentiment sparked by the APC’s Muslim-Muslim ticket was a major factor in Obi’s 2023 prominence.

Christians reacted to the Muslim-Muslim ticket controversy by stating, “If you want to Islamize Nigeria, we’ll Christianize it too.” Furthermore, who was the most accessible Christian applicant? Obi Peter.

In order to mount a genuine opposition, the former presidential candidate contended that Obi had eschewed street action, resistance, and mobilization.

“If you claim to be oppositional, you have to act accordingly. Six million people voted for you; if you can’t put them all on the streets, at least put 60,000 in Abuja to gauge the level of respect you receive from the government.

“You are the ones stifling protests because you want to replace Tinubu’s group with your own group, not bring about any real change,” he stated.
