 Residents of Ogun State on Saturday observed total compliance to the lockdown order by President Muhammad Buhari as part of measures to curtail and contain the spread of the deadly Coronavirus disease in the State.

It was observed by our Correspondent who monitored the compliant level that all places visited were deserted.

From  Isale Igbehin to Panseke, Kuto, Lafenwa, Sapon, Obantoko, residents were seen in their respective houses with their families discussing the virus and the implications of the lockdown on the citizenry.

Okelewo, Lalubu street, Ibara, Omida and business hubs at the state capital were empty as people complied with the stay at home directive.

It would be recalled that the State Governor, Prince Dapo Abiodun on Monday pleaded with President Buhari to extend the commencement of the lockdown in the State from Monday 29th March to Friday 3rd April 2020.

Speaking with journalists while monitoring the level of compliance to the lockdown order, the Ogun State Commissioner of Police, Kenneth Ebrimson commended the residents for their impressive compliance with the Stay – at – Home order.

Ebrimson said the continued cooperation and support of the people would ensure the success of the order, which, he said will lead to its the objective of containing the COVID – 19 pandemics spread in the state.

He said: “I want to mostly thank residents of Ogun State for showing their sense of being civil, their sense of law-abiding to a greater extent, they have lessened the burden of the security agencies.

“So far, the compliance level is totally satisfactory and efficient, is functional, So I am happy that they have collaborated with us without allowing us to go after any of them, so the compliance level, I am pleased and satisfied with it.

“The message I have for them is that the government has created a window from Tuesday 7 am to 2 pm, so we have equally keep our monitoring mechanism to ensure that within that period we monitor them to show that we complete what they have and then disperse so that the commencement of the compliance will continue from 2 pm.

“We are going to be polite and plead. We don’t want to subject them to mental torture because we are passing through a very difficult time.

“We must give them an enabling environment to comply and corporate with the security agencies.”

To cushion the effects of the lockdown occasioned by the Coronavirus pandemic, Ibadan, Oyo State-based club, Plat’num Club and Lounge, today, distributed food items and thousands of hands sanitizers to over 2,000 fewer people.

Beneficiaries of the relief package besieged the Bodija, Ibadan, premises of the club as early as 7 am today, with a staff of the club, attending to them one after the other to ensure social distancing.

Items distributed included bags of rice, beans and garri as well as groundnut oil, seasonings, salt, noodles, sanitizer and face mask.

Speaking after the items were distributed, Dipo Samuel, who spoke on behalf of the management, said “Plat’ num Club and Lounge was only carrying out part of its corporate social responsibility and the club will continue to assist the downtrodden, especially during this period.

“This programme is to support the efforts of the Oyo State government in alleviating the suffering of the people, who are affected by the economic crisis caused by the lockdown occasioned by the coronavirus.

“Most importantly, it is necessary at this time, to give back to the society that has sustained our clubhouse for this long, and in our own little way, we believe that today, we have affected the lives of some people.”

The Middle Belt Conscience Guards (MBCG) has welcomed the Federal Government’s directive to deploy troops to assist the police flush out bandits in Sokoto and Plateau States.

According to the group, the collaborative efforts of Army and Police in the past yielded dividends aplenty and would play out this time around.

In a statement signed by Secretary General, Dr. Paul Itodo, the Middle Belt Conscience Guard said the involvement of the “Nigerian Army in routing out bandits from forests around the country is an indication of its invaluable role in internal security operations in the country.”

MBCG, however, hailed President Muhammadu Buhari for dishing out the order and similarly applauded Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant General T.Y Buratai for his proactive response.

It disclosed that the COAS already mandated the General Officers Commanding the army formations in the affected states to reinforce the police efforts to track the bandits and bring them to justice.

MBCG added that the Army’s Chief exemplary, excellent and exceptional atmosphere put in place for officers and soldiers would ensure it continues the mandate of protecting the country’s territorial integrity in the two states.

The Middle Belt Conscience Guards, therefore, called on all well-meaning Nigerians to lend support to the security agencies in that task of ensuring that the activities of bandits and other criminal elements are curtailed to the barest minimum across Nigeria.

“The Middle Belt Conscience Guards receives the directive by President Muhammadu Buhari directing the Nigerian Army to join the Nigerian Police to flush out bandits from forests around the country, particularly in the areas that witnessed recent attacks as a welcome development.

The involvement of the Nigerian Army in routing out bandits from forests around the country is an indication of the invaluable role of the Nigerian Army in internal security operations in the country.

The Middle Belt Conscience Guards, as critical stakeholders in the ongoing peace efforts in the Middle Belt region in Nigeria, wishes to emphatically state that the Nigerian Army has indeed risen to the occasion in critical periods to restore law and order through their professionalism and commitment to the unity and progress of Nigeria.

The Middle Belt Conscience Guards is excited that by this presidential directive, the incessant killing of innocent Nigerians in these two states will come to an end as the Nigerian Army has not failed Nigerians in this regard whenever the need arises.

We are also conscious of the fact that the involvement of the Nigerian Army in most internal security operations in the country has always yielded positive results. We are confident that the activities of bandits in Plateau and Sokoto States would be a thing of the past in no distant time.

The Middle Belt Conscience Guards wishes to wholeheartedly appreciate Mr. President and welcome the proactiveness of the Chief of Army Staff to see to the full and total implementation of the order by the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

The Middle Belt Conscience Guards is most impressed with the quick response of the Chief of Army Staff, Lt-Gen. The peace being enjoyed in places like Zamfara, Benue, Kogi, Nasarawa, and parts of Plateau States is due to the collaborative efforts of the Nigerian Police and the Nigerian Army with the support of the political authorities.

This success of these collaborations over time is an indication of the dynamic leadership provided by the Muhammadu Buhari led administration that has yielded the much-desired result in the business of keeping Nigeria safe and secured for the entrenchment of sustainable growth and development.

The Middle Belt Conscience Guards wishes to commend the Chief of Army Staff, Lt. Gen. Tukur Buratai for providing an excellent and exceptional atmosphere for officers and soldiers of the Nigerian Army to keep up with their constitutional mandate of protecting the territorial integrity of Nigeria, as well as other internal security operations such as this across the country.

This is evident in the fact that it is on record that the Nigerian Army has been actively involved in the war against terrorism in North-East Nigeria, as well as over 20 internal security operations in the country simultaneously.

DELTA State Government has urged the military high command to carry out a full investigation into the threat issued by two soldiers in an online video threatening to assault mothers, wives and daughters in Warri, Delta State.

The State Commissioner for Information, Mr Charles Aniagwu in a statement Saturday morning, however, commended Nigerian Army high command for arresting the two soldiers shown in the video.

Aniagwu held that the military was a special force known for its discipline and wondered where the errant soldiers got their training and orientation from, insisting that no soldier was killed in Warri.

He maintained that the state government was concerned about where the soldiers got their information that warranted their using uncouth and uncivilised language is threatening the people of Warri in a video that had gone viral,

Saying that the soldiers were reportedly arrested at the 9 Brigade Military Cantonment, Ikeja, Lagos, on Friday, Aniagwu called on the people to remain peaceful and continue to obey government directives which, according to him, were designed to protect the people from the dreaded Coronavirus.

He said, “you will recall that in our statement on Friday, we said the attitude of the soldiers did not represent the discipline and training associated with military personnel.

“Let me on behalf of the Delta State Government thank the military high command for arresting the deviant soldiers who were bent on tarnishing the image of the army.

“The arrest of the soldiers in the viral video will no doubt restore the confidence of Nigerians in the military. It is worrisome that soldiers who were supposed to be highly disciplined would indulge in such acts of brutality and threats to women.

“We call on the military high command to carry out a full investigation into the matter with a view to bringing the culprits to justice. As a government, we will continue to partner security agencies to ensure the peace and economic development of our state.”

Buba Galadima

Celebrated Buhari critic, Engr.Buba Galadima has told the Federal Government that unless the appropriate step was taken on the issue of coronavirus,  “a  calf will turn into  a big cow.”

Speaking in an Hausa interview monitored by journalists in Kaduna on Saturday, Galadima said why he couldn’t speak on the pandemic earlier, was because whoever advises the government would just be wasting his time unless he was amongst those who worship those in power.

He however, reminded those in power that the virus was not a respecter of personality and was capable of afflicting anybody in the society if the preventive steps were not taken.

“The governments should’ve taken preventive measures since and not now. But may Almighty Allah protect us…if the government is not doing the right thing, they will favour a situation in which a calf will turn into a big cow,” he said.

He said on this issue of COVID-19, he was particularly disturbed about the clergy ,Imam or the head of a shrine who misleads adherents.

“Whoever misleads adherents in the name of religion, that COVID-19 does not exist, is the number one enemy of the people, ” he said.

He alleged that government was complacent on the issue of COVID-19, saying that the story of deaths from countries overseas, was enough warning for those in government.

Galadima faulted the manner in which government locked down communities where many people had nothing to eat, concluding that it was quite a wrong and inhuman approach.

“Now that civil servants worked from home, they should be given half salary and the other half be given to people to feed,” he said.

He was of the belief that civil servants could only work when the people were alive and therefore, we must all be our brother’s keeper.

LUTH

The Lagos University Teaching Hospital (LUTH), Idi-Araba, on Saturday confirmed the death of a COVID-19 patient in the hospital.

The LUTH Chief Medical Director, Prof. Chris Bode, stated this in a statement issued by the Chairman, Medical Advisory Committee (CMAC) of LUTH, Prof. Wasiu Adeyemo.

He said the man was brought unconscious to LUTH Emergency ward late in the evening of April 2 by his friend.

Bode said: “Although they denied any history of recent travel, his presentation strongly suggested COVID-19.

“He was handled professionally by the Infectious Diseases Consultant and his team without unduly exposing LUTH staff to danger. He died a few hours later.

“Further investigations later revealed he had earlier performed a test at Yaba soon after he travelled back to Nigeria from Holland and the test was positive.

“He was a known diabetic hypertensive patient. He also had a kidney transplant for chronic kidney disease and was on immunosuppressant drugs.

“The corpse has since been handed over to the appropriate Unit of the Lagos State Ministry of Health for safe burial according to international best practices.

“Our Department of Community Medicine has moved swiftly to trace, follow-up and assist gallant staff who managed the patient.”

He said that LUTH management implored all members of staff to continue observing strict standard protocols while handling all patients as medical personnel are especially at increased risk from such undisclosed exposure.

The CMD added: “All efforts are being made to ensure the availability of all required items to continue the effective management of such cases that come to LUTH.

“Efforts are also in top gear to complete the isolation facility in LUTH for management of any possible spillover from the Yaba Infectious Disease Hospital (IDH), if the surge in patients’ load continues.” (NAN)

The Federal Capital Territory Administration (FTCA), has designated the Asokoro District Hospital as a quarantine facility to prevent the spread of COVID-19 pandemic.

The facility was designed for isolation of persons who had contacts with those infected with Coronavirus disease.

To this end, the hospital on Saturday began to suspend its Out Patient Department (OPD) to protect visiting patients from exposure to COVID-19.

A News Agency of Nigeria  (NAN) correspondent who visited the hospital on Saturday reports that all the clinics were closed to patients while the Accident and Emergency (A&E) unit was also shut.

NAN also reports that patients who used to collect routine drugs were being given drugs that could last them for at least three months of the initial quarantine.

FCT is ranked second to Lagos in exposure to COVID-19 pandemic, a situation that prompted the Federal Government to place the territory on complete lockdown alongside two other endemic states.

NAN reports, however, that in spite of the lockdown some motorists were plying the roads while youths and families utilised Saturday morning for outdoor aerobics around Kari – Orozo axis in Abuja.
