BREAKING: Buhari lifts lockdown in FCT, Ogun and Lagos

President Muhammadu Buhari has eased the lockdown in the Federal Capital Territory, Lagos and Ogun States.

In a nationwide broadcast on Monday, the president explained that he consulted widely before taking the decision.

He commended Nigerians for the level of endurance shown throughout the four weeks that the lockdown has lasted.

Buhari advised Nigerians to adhere the guidelines of the presidential task force on COVID-19 and the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC).

“Based on the above and in line with the recommendations of the Presidential Task Force on COVID-19, the various Federal Government committees that have reviewed socio-economic matters and the Nigeria Governors Forum, I have approved a phased and gradual easing of lockdown measures in FCT, Lagos and Ogun States effective from Monday, 4th May, 2020,” he said.

“However, this will be followed strictly with aggressive reinforcement of testing and contact tracing measures while allowing the restoration of some economic and business activities in certain sectors.”

Plateau Repatriates 190 Almajiris to Bauchi State Government

A press release issued by Senior Special Assistant to the State Governor on Media Muktar Gidado said the The Bauchi State Government has received a total of 190 Almajiri pupils evacuated from Mangu Local Government Area of plateau state.

Receiving the Pupils at General Hassan Usman Katsina Unity College Bauchi, the State Deputy Governor Senator Baba Tela said the pupils would undergo medical screening and other necessary profiling before handing them over to respective parents.

Senator Tela, who is the Chairman of the Task Force Committee on Covid 19 , said accommodation has been made for the pupils until they would be declared safe to reunite with their parents.

The Deputy Governor said the gesture is aimed at ensuring that, pupils are not infected with the COVID-19 virus and called on islamic clerics to comply with the government on banning of Almajiri activities in the state.

” We have just received 190 Almajiris who are indigenes of our state, what we intend is to verify their health condition to ensure they are not infected with the deadly coronavirus before we release them to their parents.

” This shows that, the policy of Almajiri will be enforced as all the Northern Governors have agreed on banning Almajiri activities in their respective states.

Senator Tela used the medium to direct all Ulamas with Almajiris to with immediate effect, return them to their respective states, assuring that the state government will take care of their transportation.

” Henceforth, from tomorrow, Bauchi state government will commence evacuation of all Almajiri pupils to their various states of origin.”

On the level of compliance on the partial lockdown of the state, the deputy governor said a Magistrate Court would be set up to ensure total adherence to the order.

According to him, the decision is to ensure compliance with the protocol of social distancing as part of effort to prevent the spread of the novel coronavirus in the state.

Expert Decry Disruption in Reproductive Health Services during Covid Lockdown

It has been observed that disruption of supply chains of contraceptive commodities occasioned by the closure of health clinics providing Family Planning (FP) information, counselling, and public fear about visiting health facilities due to Covid lockdown is likely to ruin the gains in the uptake of modern FP methods in the country.

This assertion was contained in paper presentation titled, “Why Access to Contraception is Critical in Covid-19 Response” by Professor Josiah Mutihir during a virtual meeting of stakeholders in Family Planning and Reproductive Health Services.

Professor Mutihir further assert that family planning is a life-saving intervention mitigating increased morbidity and mortality resulting from unintended pregnancies.

“Families are compelled to stay home, day and night for periods of between 1 to 12 weeks depending of the country or state. This has brought the husband and wife or spouses face to face for long periods. Idleness has set in, and increased sexual desires and activity result.

“Where the woman is not protected, unwanted pregnancy is the likely outcome in most instances where the woman is still in the reproductive age and is not on any method of contraception.

The public health expert also emphasised that a 10% decline in the use of contraceptive methods would result in additional 49 million women with unmet need for FP, and 15 million unintended pregnancies within the course of the year.

While proffering a way forward amidst the lockdown period, Mutihir pointed out that adequate and clear information for the public on family planning methods, using Telehealth should be encouraged.

He also suggested that a public enlightenment campaign mentioning the availability of Contraceptive Methods being available at the Pharmacies should be develop.

“Relevant authorities should put ACESSING family planning services as Essential Service and therefore should be on the exemption list for restricted movements during the lockdown period”.

Professor Mutihir further suggested that Family planning clinics to re-open and treated as essential service, and clients seeking FP be allowed unfettered access.

The virtual meeting of the stakeholders, organized by Development Communications (DevComs) Network, attracted participants from Network of Media Practitioners in Public Health , DevCom Personnel, The Challenge Initiative (TCI) project Coordinator in Bauchi State and other relevant stakeholders in reproductive health service.

Egypt’s COVID-19 infections rise to 4,534 with 317 deaths – Ministry

Egypt confirmed on Sunday 215 new cases and 10 deaths of COVID-19, raising the total number of cases registered in the country to 4,534, including 317 deaths, said the Egyptian Health Ministry.

Meanwhile, 62 COVID-19 patients were completely cured, increasing the tally of recoveries to 1,176, the ministry’s spokesman Khaled Megahed said in a statement.

Megahed stressed Egypt’s close cooperation and coordination with the World Health Organisation regarding COVID-19 case detection and necessary medical care.

The first infection with the novel coronavirus was announced in Egypt in mid-February.

Since mid-March, Egypt has been implementing temporary closure of schools and universities, entertainment places, restaurants, malls, museums and archeological sites, besides suspending flights and halting sports activities, to curb the outbreak of the virus.

Ahead of the Muslim holy month of Ramadan that started on April 24, the government announced extending a previously imposed nighttime curfew but reducing it from 10 to nine hours and relaxing some anti-coronavirus restrictions.

While announcing the new curfew, Egyptian Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly said on April 23 that the country was trying to strike a balance between fighting the pandemic and maintaining economic growth.

He added that the government is working on resuming economic activities gradually after Ramadan. (Xinhua/NAN)

COVID-19: Borno Govt sets conditions for lock down relax

The Borno State coronavirus (COVID-19) response team; has set condition for relax of 14-day lock down.

According to response team, relax of the lock down was to enable residents replenish their food supplies and basic needs of life.

The relaxation which; commences today (Monday); is for banks and markets to be open to public from 8am to 5pm.

While announcing lock down relax Sunday in Maiduguri, the COVID-19 response team Secretary, Dr. Sahihu Kwayabura, who doubles as Health Commissioner disclosed that all traders and customers must wear their face masks during the nine-hour relax.

He said at each entry point of Maiduguri Monday Market (MMM), Budum, Abaganaram and Gambouru markets; there will be hand washing points at markets’ gates for traders and customer wash their hands.

According to him, all traders and customers must wash their hands before and after leaving the markets.

He warned that the relaxation is not for people to congregate in markets and communities, but maintain their social distancing; with personal hygiene during the lock down period.

His words: “This is an opportunity for residents to replenish their food supplies tomorrow (Monday) and next Thursday.

“Traders and customers, are not allowed to go into markers without wearing their face masks.

He further added that in the absence of masks, women could also use their veils and scarfs,”

The Borno State Health Commissioner, warning that there will be no intercity and state commuting or travels.

COVID-19: Camp housing suspected trafficked persons uncovered in Makurdi, suspects taken into isolation

The Benue State Action Committee on COVID-19 earlier today discovered and busted a camp housing persons believed to have been trafficked into the state from some northern states of the country.

Deputy Governor of the State and Chairman of the Committee, Engr. Benson Abounu led a taskforce of the Committee to the camp located at Nos. 12 and 13 on Adikpo Street in what is popularly known as the Hausa Quarters area of Makurdi.

Discovered at the camp were large numbers of youths mostly in their early twenties living in tightly clustered conditions in gross violation of social distancing requirements.

When interviewed a number of the youths admitted to having been brought into the state from a number of northern states for purpose of seeking work.

Their host (names withheld) admitted that he usually receives the youths from all over the north and houses them to enable them ply such artisan trades as tailoring, shoe-making and the likes in the state.

Interviewed further, he said he, however, has not received any new influx of thr youths since the COVID-19 lockdown on the state was imposed.

But residents in the area contended that there has been a daily influx of those youths to the camp even after the imposition of the lockdown.

They said that the youths are usually smuggled in late at night on vehicles transporting goods such as food items and other essential consumer items.

An Emergency Response team of the Benue COVID-19 Committee took the vital signs of the youths after which they were taken into Isolation for further evaluation, in line with established Infection Prevention and Control (IPC) Protocols.

Engr. Abounu also led the Committee to visit other potential camps at the Food Items Loading and Offloading Park on Lagos Close and on Bauchi Street all in the same Hausa Quarters area.

The Deputy Governor further directed that regular security patrols be mounted to police the entirety of the Hausa Quarters area, adding that same measures will be applied to any area where there occur violations of the lockdown.

JUST IN: Suspected Ondo COVID-19 patient returns to hospital

Suspected Coronavirus (COVID-19) patient, who ran away from the University of Medical Sciences Teaching Hospital, Ondo, has returned to the hospital.

POLITICS NIGERIA understands that the suspected patient had caused panic among residents after leaving the hospital last Saturday.

Speaking to reporters on Sunday, Chief Medical Director of the hospital, Dr. Oluwole Ige, said the patient showed symptoms of the disease and the result was being expected when he ran away.

He said: “I can tell you that the patient has returned to the hospital. We are on top of the situation. He is still a suspected case.

“We are waiting for the result of the test conducted for him and two others.”

BREAKING: Osun records death of two Coronavirus patients

The Osun state government has announced its first death of Coronavirus.

The governor of the state, Gboyega Oyetola, confirmed the death of two patients in a press briefing in Government House, Osogbo on Sunday.

He said out of the 12 new cases of COVID-19 patients, two have died.”The casualties are from Ede and in Ile-Ife”, he said as he appealed with security officials not to compromise the lockdown order.

He also stressed the compulsory use of face masks across the state.

A South Korean Official has debunked rumours that North Korean leader, King Jong Un has died.

Foreign policy advisor to South Korea’s President Moon Jae-in, Chung-in Moon, has stated that the North Korea Supreme Leader is instead staying at his holiday resort on the North Korean coast.

“Our government position is firm…..Kim Jong-un is alive and well, ” Chung-in Moon told Fox News.

“He has been staying in the Wonsan area since April 13. No suspicious movements have so far been detected.”

It will be recalled that a Japanese media outlet claimed Kim was in a ‘vegetative state’ after he underwent heart surgery earlier in the month. The North Korean leader has not been seen publicly since April 11 when he led a meeting of the ruling Workers’ Party committee of policymakers, North Korean state media said.

Kogi Tribunal: Chambers of Smart Adeyemi’s Counsel Burgled by Hoodlums

Armed hoodlums early yesterday morning burgled the Chambers of Senator Smart Adeyemi’s lawyer, Dr. Oladapo Otitoju, located in the Mpape new layout, Abuja.

According to the lawyer, the armed gang, numbering about seven invaded the office at about midnight on yesterday and tied the security mam on duty while their operation lasted.

Dr. Otitoju is the counsel representing Senator Adeyemi at the Kogi State National Assembly Election Petition Tribunal sitting at the Federal High Court, Abuja.

Senator Dino Melaye is challenging the victory of Senator Adeyemi, at the November 16 and 30th Kogi West senatorial election.

Last week, Senator Melaye closed his case against Senator Adeyemi, after calling his witnesses who gave evidence at the tribunal.

Some of Senator Melaye’s witness had in their evidence told the tribunal that the election was free, fair and without violence.

The office of Dr. Otitoju was buggled three days after Senator Melaye closed his case before the tribunal against Senator Adeyemi.

According to Dr. Otitoju, in the process of forcing their way into his office, doors, windows and other valuables were destroyed.

He said unknown to the hoodlums, no document relating to the case before the tribunal was kept in the office.

”My office was attacked by suspected armed gang looking for documents of cases in court.

”Unknown to them, the documents and files of cases were not kept in the office”, he said.

The tribunal led by Justice Isa Sambo adjourned sitting last week Thursday, April 23 2019 to April 28, 2019 when the Independent National Electoral Commission is expected to open its case.

Apart from Senator Adeyemi, Senator Melaye had also joined INEC and the All Progressives Congress, APC in the petition before the tribunal as respondents.
