The Zamfara State Governor, Bello Mohammed Matawalle has approved the appointment of Alhaji Sanusi Mohammed as the new Emir of Kauan Namoda.
This was contained in a statement issued to newsmen on Wednesday by Mr. Zailani Bappa, the Special Adviser to Governor Bello Matawalle on Public Enlightenment, Media and Communications.
The approval follows recommendation from the Kaura Namoda Traditional Council as enshrined in the selection procedure.
Alhaji Sanusi Mohammed succeeds the late Emir, Alhaji Mohamned Ahmed Asha who passed away following a brief illness.
Until his appointment today, the 40 year old Alhaji Sanusi Mohammed is a serving Major in the Nigerian Army.
While praying, once again for the repose of the deceased Emir, Governor Matawalle wishes the new Emir a successful reign.
The Nigeria Centre For Disease Control (NCDC), has confirmed 195 new COVID-19 cases in the country, taking Nigeria’s total cases to 3145.
Of the new cases, 82 are in Lagos, 30 are in Kano, while 19 are in Zamfara and 18 in Sokoto.
Ten are in are in Borno, 9 in the FCT, 8 in Oyo , 5 in both Kebbi and Gombe.
Four cases were recorded in Ogun, 3 in Katsina, while Kaduna and Adamawa have on case each.
534 patients have recovered so far and have been discharged, while 103 persons have died so far.
The novel coronavirus has killed at least 260,546 people since the outbreak first emerged in China last December, according to a tally from official sources compiled by AFP at 1900 GMT on Wednesday.
More than 3,710,240 cases were registered in 195 countries and territories. Of these, at least 1,153,300 are now considered recovered.
The tallies, using data collected by AFP from national authorities and information from the World Health Organization (WHO), probably reflect only a fraction of the actual number of infections.
Many countries are testing only the most serious cases.
The United States has the highest number of total deaths with 71,982 out of 1,214,572 cases. At least 189,791 have been declared recovered.
Britain now has the second-highest toll with 30,076 deaths from 201,101 cases. On Tuesday, figures compiled by British regional health agencies put the number of fatalities at over 32,000. But these include cases where COVID-19 is only suspected to be the cause, in addition to people who tested positive.
Italy has registered 29,684 deaths and 214,457 cases, Spain 25,857 fatalities and 220,325 infections and France 25,809 deaths and 174,191 cases.
China — excluding Hong Kong and Macau — has to date declared 4,633 deaths and 82,883 cases. It has 77,911 recovered cases.
Europe has a total of 149,666 deaths from 1,625,953 cases, the United States and Canada have 76,261 deaths and 1,277,948 cases, Latin America and the Caribbean have 15,478 deaths and 285,887 cases, Asia has 9,776 deaths and 260,989 cases, the Middle East has 7,425 deaths and 200,853 cases, Africa has 1,996 deaths from 50,413 cases, and Oceania 124 deaths from 8,202 cases.

The Federal Ministry of Youth and Sports Development has placed the mother of late Super Eagles striker, Rashidi Yekini, Alhaja Sikiratu, on a monthly stipend of N10,000.
Mr Olaitan Shittu, a representative of the Minister of Sports, Mr Sunday Dare, disclosed this at Ijagbo, near Offa in Kwara on Wednesday, when he donated Ramadan gifts on behalf of the minister to the aged mother.
The minister donated the sum of N50,000 as part of the Ramadan gifts to Yekini’s mother.
Some of the items donated with the cash included a 50 kg bag of rice, 10 kg bag of wheat and six tins of Milo beverage drink.
Shittu explained that it was not the first time the minister was reaching out to Alhaja Yekini as he was also at her residence in September, 2019.
He said that the Ministry would also be extending the same gesture to the mother of late Super Eagles player, Samuel Okwaraji.

“I have been abandoned for a long time and have not seen any help from anyone.

“I need help from Nigerians, but this minister has done very well, especially remembering me in this holy month of Ramadan.
“Since my son died, it has been very tough for me because I do not have any help from people.
“Rashidi’s siblings are not doing well too, so, I was left to struggle for life everyday,” she said.
Recall that late Yekini died eight years ago in Ibadan after retiring from football.
His professional career spanned more than two decades and was mainly associated with Vitória de Setúbal in Portugal.

Besides playing for Nigeria, Yekini also played in six other countries including Ivory Coast.
Yekini scored 37 goals as a Nigerian international from 58 games and represented the nation in five major tournaments, including two World Cups where he scored the country’s first-ever goal in the competition against Bulgaria in the USA ’94 World Cup.
He was also named the African Footballer of the Year in 1993.(NAN).
A security expert, Richard Murphy has said the killing of 135 Boko Haram terrorists in the Timbuktu Triangle around northeast Nigeria has exposed the terror group’s leader, Abubakar Shekau as a liar who is now under pressure to maintain an influence he never had.
Murphy, who spoke against the background of the series of military operations that resulted in the killing of the terrorists over last weekend, noted that the development has forced Shekau into a situation where he could be killed by his own commanders owing to the repeated losses they have suffered.
According to Murphy, “The pace at which the Nigerian military is going has made it clear that any terrorist that does not personally broker a deal to surrender is most likely to end up like those that have been killed in recent operations. Dead.
“Interestingly, there is a facet that some analysts are not seeing in the present military operations. These Boko Haram terrorists are being killed as they flee the battlegrounds. It is not that they were being repelled in the course of attacking a military base, it is not that they were killed while springing an ambush or launching a surprised attack against troops. They are being decimated by an army that took the war to them in their hideouts.
“I have an explanation for this. It is that the fundamentals changed in a way that Boko Haram terrorists and their commanders are yet to appreciate. They have lost the capacity to retreat into neighbouring Chad after launching attacks in Nigeria and the same can be said of Niger and even Cameroon. The Nigerian military also took delivery of certain hardwares, which was not the case as at the time decision makers in the west were being swayed by fabricated human rights violations report.
“Add the compelling leadership exhibited by the Nigerian Army Chief, General Buratai, and you begin to get a picture of why Shekau will do well to close shops, possibly consider a surrender, if that window is still open,” the security expert posited.
He said the number of terrorists killed by government troops in recent weeks have exposed Shekau’s “numerous lies” that have spurred his minions to their death in the ongoing war being waged against their insurgency.
Murphy explained that “War is not all about the bombs and the bullets. It also entails psychological warfare, which is what propaganda is directed at achieving. This must have been what Shekau thought he was doing when he recorded the latest audio he published. But within hours of the clip making it to the public it became apparent that it was a bad call given the mix of situations he currently faced. The desperation showed through just as each sentence of the recording is now proving to be a lie.
“Shekau lied that he was not considering any decision to surrender. Yes, in the business he is currently engaged in he wouldn’t say otherwise until the final whistle, which we are not likely to wait for given the division that now dominate his camp.
“From all indications, he is on the run and his capacity to do any further fight with the troops is zero. He has lost over 300 men in just one month and such a rogue wants the world to believe that he is still able to fight? That’s not correct. He is finished and his end has come,” he declared.
The security expert however said the Nigerian Army must sustain its offensive against the terrorists to ensure recovery is impossible for them while noting that the country had given Shekau enough time to surrender while he failed to take up the offer even though it was presented several times.
He warned that the Army must fight and ensure that the last terrorist is killed and not allowed to escape into Chad or any other neighbouring nation, “Nigeria must learn from the past in two different respects. The first is that any terrorist left behind in this onslaught is like the rhizome of an invasive plant species left in the soil, given enough time and the right conditions it will grow and take over the whole place; this is what happens each time the military defeats Boko Haram and leaves behind some remnants of the fighters. The second thing Nigeria must learn from is the history of Boko Haram itself, if you killed its founder or leader without mopping up the followers, they will always find a mad man to lead them into battle,” Murphy stated.
Bishop David Oyedepo of Winners Chapel has faulted the continuous closure of Churches in the country as part of measures to stop thes pread of Coronavirus.
Oyedepo spoke on Wednesday morning at the Covenant Hour of Prayer programme of the Church held at its headquarters in Otta, Ogun State broadcast live to members.
“I can smell a rat behind the closure of Churches. The Lord spoke to me about it. It’s part of moves to stop the Church from spreading,” he declared at the service.
While stating that the people involved in declaring the ban don’t know what they are doing, he said the growth and expansion of the Church is one of the greatest headache of the devil.
“How do you have the markets open and the Churches remain closed? Which one is more organized,” he wondered, stating that no civilization has taken place in history without the influence of the Church.
“The devil is surely targeting the people, but God’s words says I shall build my Church and the gates of hell shall not prevail.
“Any gang up against the Church shall surely fail. The devil and his agents shall surely pay for this,” the Bishop stated.
Noting that every soul is precious to God, he said it was not logical for hospitals where people die every day to remain open, while the Church where people get saved and healed are closed.
“It’s wrong to continue to have the Churches closed. It’s an upside down way of looking at things.
“I declare that the world is free and the nations are liberated from continuous lockdown.”
Bishop Oyedepo urged Christians to remain fervent in their faith and not forsake fellowships with other brethren either at home or in the Church.
He said it was dangerous for any Christian to stay away from fellowship and not constantly hear the word of God and allow it to impact their daily lives.
Though the lockdown in Lagos, Ogun and Abuja declared by the federal government has been relaxed with work allowed to resume and market opened, the ban on social gathering, including religious meetings remain in force.
President Mohammed Buhari in his broadcast promised that the ban will be reviewed at the appropriate time based on the curtailment of the spread of the virus.
As part of its efforts towards curbing the spread of COVID 19 pandemic in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) the Nigerian Army has donated Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) and other kits to FCT administration on the 6th of May 2020.
Presenting the items on behalf of the Chief of Army Staff (COAS ) to the Minister of Federal Capital Territory Mallam Mohammed Musa Bello at the Headquarters of the Ministry in Abuja, the Chief of Civil Military Affairs (CIMIC) at Army Headquarters, Major General Hamza Ibrahim Bature said the donation is in support of the Federal Government’s efforts towards curbing the spread of the Coronavirus.
The COAS representative described Corvid 19 as a security threat to humanity, called on all Nigerians to join hands with government at all levels in the fight against the pandemic adding that the donation is part of Nigerian Army Civil Military Cooperation (CIMIC) activities in furtherance to maintaining excellent civil-military relations.
In his response, the minister thanked the Nigerian Army for identifying with the citizenry in FCT in this trying period. He said the equipment donated by the COAS will go a long way to support the frontliners working to curtail the virus even as he commended the COAS for his visionary leadership of the Nigerian Army.
Items donated include 2000 pieces of Face Masks, 1000 hand sanitizers, 100 pairs of PPE, 1000 pieces of hand gloves among others.
Maj Gen Bature was accompanied at the occasion by the Commander, Army Headquarters Garrison, Major General JGK Myam, the Acting Commander Nigerian Army Medical Corps Col SJ Adama, Brig Gen AA Goni, Brig Gen TO Olowomeye and Colonel MM Dole who represented the Acting Director Army Public Relations.
The Minister of State FCT Hajia Dr Ramatu Tijani Aliyu, the Permanent secretary, Mr Chinyeaka Oha were among the dignitaries that graced the occasion.
The Armed Forces of Nigeria says it has decimated over 496 Boko Haram terrorists and other criminal elements through its various operations within the country between March 18th to May 5th, 2020.
Coordinator, Defence Media Operations Major General John Enenche gave the figures while briefing newsmen on update of military operations in the country within the period under review.
General Enenche said, within the period, troops of Operation LAFIYA DOLE put in a high professional effort with glaring success which the killing of Abu Usamah a prominent Boko Haram figure and a number of their fighters who were also eliminated while troops of Operation HADARIN DAJI in Northwest conducted various clearance operations as well as OPERATION WHIRL PUNCH which also clamped down on Armed Militia and other bandits in Benue and Taraba States.

UPDATE ON OPERATIONS OF ARMED FORCES OF NIGERIA FROM 18 MAR TO 5 MAY 2020
As you are aware the Armed Forces of Nigeria is conducting major operations across the country. Consequently, regular update of our efforts and progress need to be disseminated to the general public. For the benefit of doubt, it is a joint effort of the Nigerian Army, Nigerian Navy, Nigerian Air Force and other security agencies of our Country. I am to state that these operations have considerably degraded the common enemies of Nigeria and reduced economic sabotage in our Exclusive Economic Zone. The update will cover our operational activities from 18 Mar to 5 May 2020.
OPERATION LAFIYA DOLE
Within the period under review, troops of Operation LAFIYA DOLE put in a high professional effort with glaring success. Some villages that were attacked during the period were rescued by our gallant troops and normalcy returned to the affected areas. A number of Intelligence Surveillance and Reconnaissance missions were conducted, which revealed criminal hideouts and their activities. Consequently, air interdictions were conducted, which led to the destruction of several BHT logistics facilities and compounds, housing some of their leaders including Abu Usamah and a number of their fighters who were eliminated.
Similarly, a total of 343 BHT/ISWAP fighters were killed and several others suffered various degrees of gunshot wounds with narrow chances of survival. This is in addition to several others, including their key leaders, killed by Air bombardments. Furthermore, most of the Boko Haram’s logistics installations and networks have been destroyed, while 16 of their informants and logistics suppliers were arrested. At the call of this duty, some of our troops paid the supreme prize and others were wounded in action.
OPERATION HADARIN DAJI
Following closely, troops of Operation HADARIN DAJI conducted various clearance operations during the period under review. The combined effort of the Land and Air Components as well as other security operatives of the Operation provided security for lives and property. Several bandits locations and hideouts were cleared with Close Air Support provided for ground troops. In all, a total of 17 kidnapped victims were rescued and united with their families and 146 bandits were neutralized in Katsina and Zamfara States. Within the same period, troops of Operation HADARIN DAJI recovered several arms and ammunition among other equipment. Our agile troops also rescued 922 Rustled Cattles and 446 sheep. However, 4 soldiers paid the supreme prize.
OPERATION WHIRL PUNCH
Equally, troops of Operation WHIRL PUNCH during the period under review, clamped down on Armed Militia and other bandits in Benue and Taraba States. Within the period, troops rescued 7 kidnapped victims and recovered large caches of ammunition and other items. A total of 7 bandits were killed by troops from contacts made at Toto Nasarawa State and Anku Mbagen in Atera-Jange Torov Council Ward of Ukum Local Government Area of Benue State. Non of our Troops was wounded or killed in action.
MARITIME OPERATIONS
Along the Southern Regions, troops of the Armed Forces of Nigeria operating within the Maritime environment covering Operations AWATSE and DELTA SAFE recorded tremendous successes in their operations. Cumulatively, a total of Sixty One (61) illegal refining sites were discovered during Anti-Crude Oil/Anti-Illegal Bunkering Operations in the Niger delta Region. In all, a total of Four thousand Four Hundred and Sixty-Five barrels (4,464.8) and One Million, Seven Hundred and Eighty-One (1,781,000) Litres of Crude Oil were recovered. Also recovered were One Million, Seven Hundred and Fifty-Six Thousand, Nine Hundred (1,756,900) Litres of AGO; One Hundred and Sixteen Thousand, Five Hundred (116,000) Litres of DPK; and Eleven Thousand, Seven Hundred and Fifty (11,750) Litres of PMS. During the Swamp Boogie operations, several refining ovens, receivers, surface metal storage tanks/drums, coolers and dugout pits were deactivated and immobilized. Fishing Trawlers were also arrested and handed over to NIMASA. In all, 15 hostages were rescued, a barge and some weapons were recovered and 3 pipeline vandals arrested.
Also, within the period, the Nigerian Navy rescued 3 Beninoise whose fishing trawler caught fire at Lagos anchorage. In addition, the Nigerian Navy responded to a distress call by Beninoise Navy for assistance, when 11 crew men onboard a Portuguese flagged container ship, MV TOMMI RITSCHER in Benin territorial waters came under attack by pirates. Among those rescued were Ukrainians, Bulgarians and Filipinos. The Nigerian Navy received commendation from the Benin Chief of the Naval Staff, Captain Albert Ezien Badou. Additionally, Eight Hundred and Ninety-Four (894) bags 50kg of parboiled smuggled foreign rice were impounded by the Nigerian Navy at Agbami platform in Akwa-Ibom State.
In summary, the Armed Forces of Nigeria from 18 March to 5 May 2020 neutralized 343 BHT/TSWAP criminals in the North East, deleted 153 bandits in the North West and North Central parts of the Country amongst other successes recorded. Furthermore, human and technical intelligence confirmed that between January and March 2020, 18 BHT/ISWAP leaders were killed due to our ground and air offensives against their settlements and hideouts. Adding to the most recent one killed between 18 March – 5 May 2020, 19 BHT/ISWAP leaders are confirmed killed by our gallant troops.
From our operations within the period reviewed, it is obvious that the Armed Forces of Nigeria is winning the war against the enemies of our great country. Consequently, the Armed Forces of Nigeria will remain resolute and highly committed to end the insurgency in the country. It will sustain the offensive and will not relent until peace is restored to every troubled region of our beloved Country. The general public is also assured of the commitment of the Armed Forces of Nigeria to protect the economic assets of Nigeria. The High Command of the Nigerian Military wishes to thank the general public for their support and further solicit their cooperation towards providing credible and timely information that will facilitate proactive engagements in our operations.
The Africa Women Arise for Change Network (AWACN) has hailed the Nigerian military’s final clearance operation against Boko Haram terrorists as the sole bright spot in an utterly gloomy COVID-19 season.
AWACN, in a statement on Wednesday, said the troops of Operation Lafiya Dole have gladdened the hearts of African women with its recent onslaught on the fleeing terrorists.
Led by Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lieutenant General T.Y Buratai, the Nigerian Army has recorded tremendous success over the insurgents, with the most recent exterminating 134.
In a statement by its President, Lady Nkechi Odoma, the group expressed delight with the COAS and his men for this magnificent feat amidst the rampaging coronavirus that has consumed nearly 300,000 lives worldwide.
As women, AWACN said they were the worst hit by terror activities ranging from deaths of their husbands, children and even rape.
The women network congratulated the COAS, describing him as “ a responsible husband and family man who feels our pains and who has been in the theatre of operation with the troops for the past five weeks”.
AWACN, however, urged the Army Chief and his troops not to take their foot of the peddle as they are only a stone throw away from victory.

Recent news coming from the theatre of the military operation in Northeast Nigeria and the Lake Chad region has gladdened the hearts of African women like no other thing has done in the recent past.
Women in Africa are happy that Nigerian troops by their gallantry and patriotism are proving that evil can never have a permanent victory over good and that finally, our tears as key stakeholders in the family unit would be permanently wiped away.
You may wish to know that women have borne the brunt of the activities of these terrorists the more as they have made many of us widows, many have been victims of rape and forced marriages, while many have been dispossessed of all they have including their children.
It comes to us therefore as not only cheery but reassuring that Troops of Operation Lafiya Dole (OPLD) eliminated 134 Boko Haram/Islamic States of West Africa Province (ISWAP) terrorists and arrested 16 informants in Borno State, Nigeria recently.
These are the groups responsible for the worst horror visited on African women in recent times.
Though the general mood the world over is that of angst and grief occasioned by the ravaging effect of the Coronavirus, which has also claimed hundreds of thousands of lives the world over, bright sparks that illuminate the horizon should not be neglected.
We see the recent victory of Nigerian troops as one of such sparks that is worth celebrating because of the overall impact it would have on bringing the inhuman carnage in Northeast Nigeria and the Lake Chad Region under control as well as restore peace and development in Nigeria.
By now, the world is aware that the ongoing subsidiary operation in the North East Theatre of Operation, code-named ‘Operation Kantana Jimlan, led by no other than the Chief of Army Staff, Lt. General Tukur Buratai, is yielding great success.
Since the Chief of Army Staff relocated to the theatre of war, Nigerian troops have moved from one success story to another and these have given us hope that a total victory over the evil forces of ISWAP and Boko Haram terrorists is not only certain but will be sooner than expected.
To our pride and happiness, Nigerian troops through a coordinated artillery bombardments on Timbuktu triangle conducted on May 1 and 2, destroyed seven Boko Haram Gun Trucks while 78 Boko Haram and ISWAP fighters were killed through both aerial and human intelligence and within the same period, another successful artillery engagement to Buk in Damboa Local Government Area of Borno State resulted in the neutralization of an additional 56 BHT criminals bringing the total of the terrorists liquidated within a spate of two days to 134!
Such acts of bravely being repeated by Nigeria troops in recent operations will surely hasten the liquidation of the evil terrorists groups in Nigeria and will make way for a return to normalcy in many of the ravaged communities and make us, the women, happy.
It will also send a strong signal to other insurgents that the days when their evil activities were being tolerated are over.
We note the precision on targets and assault on the strongholds of the Boko Haram and ISWAP terrorists in the most professional and efficient manners.
Indeed we can say that the Nigerian Military is one of the best in Africa if not the entire world.
Another commendable aspect of the exercise is that 16 high profile Boko Haram and ISWAP informants have also been identified and apprehended.
With the rounding up of these informants, the intelligence and information gathering network of the Boko Haram and ISWAP terrorists would be weakened and it is not unexpected to hear very soon the insurgents begging to surrender since their sources of information have been blocked and their further resistance would be akin to groping in the dark.
We congratulate the Chief of Army Staff, General Buratai, a responsible husband and family man who feels our pains and who has been in the theatre of operation with the troops for the past five weeks.
We note that his presence and participation in operations has greatly inspired the troops leading to.the success being recorded at the battle field.
We also commend the troops who have by their acts of gallantry given the citizenry a course to rejoice at a time of when the general mood the world over has not been that bright.
We urge the chief of army staff not to relent but pursue the fight to its logical conclusion more so as victory is at sight.
We assure the Chief of Army Staff of the cooperation of the citizenry especially women towards ensuring that the battle is won.

Four out of the 11 travellers from Sokoto State en route Akure who were intercepted by the Oyo State Police at the weekend have tested positive to COVID-19.
The state’s incident manager, Dr Taiwo Ladipo disclosed this on Tuesday.
According to him, the four confirmed cases are currently being isolated at the Infectious Diseases Centre, Olodo.
A member of the COVID-19 task force, Prof. Temitope Alonge, said the cases have been admitted at the Olodo Isolation Center for treatment.
The number of confirmed COVID-19 cases in the state as of Tuesday stood at 39, with 28 active cases.
In the early hours of Wednesday, the Nigeria Center for Disease Control (NCDC) announced that on more case had been discovered in the state.
So far, nine patients have been discharged, while two persons have died.
32 health workers in various hospitals across Kano State have tested positive for the coronavirus.
The state government confirmed this in a report via its Twitter handle in the early hours of Wednesday.
Although the government didn’t specifically state that the 32 cases were all health workers, the Chairman of the Nigeria Medical Association in the state, Sanusi Bala, confirmed this to Channels Television.
The new infections bring the total number of cases recorded in the state to 397.
Three have, however, recovered and been discharged while eight persons have died.
