Bomb Blast in Somalia Kills 4 During Eid Celebrations

0

At least four civilians were killed and more than 15 others were wounded in a bomb blast during Eid al Fitr celebrations outside the Somali town of Baidoa, witnesses said.

Two of the dead are children, according to reports from the scene.

The explosion occurred on Sunday afternoon as people performed traditional dances in a field near an internally displaced persons camp north of the town.
Somalia observed Eid al Fitr on Saturday but festivities continue for three days according to Islamic traditions.

A security official who could not be named says celebrations were held in the field Saturday without incident. He said he believes the bomb was planted before celebrations continued for a second day Sunday.

Earlier on Sunday, a police general survived a roadside explosion targeting his vehicle in Mogadishu. General Ali Hersi Barre and his bodyguards escaped unhurt following the explosion.

General Barre is the acting chief of the health department of the national police. He was targeted on May 20 when a similar roadside explosion hit his vehicle. Gen Barre was not in the vehicle, but one of his bodyguards was killed and three other people were wounded.

There was no immediate claim responsibility for either attack Sunday, but security officials suspect al-Shabab was behind the blasts.

Taliban announces 3-day ceasefire over Eid

0

The Taliban has announced a ceasefire with the Afghan government that will take effect when the Muslim festival of Eid al-Fitr begins on Sunday.

It follows a rise in attacks by the hardline Islamist group against government troops in recent weeks.

President Ashraf Ghani welcomed the announcement, and said his soldiers would respect the terms of the truce.

The three-day ceasefire is likely to raise hopes of a longer-term reduction in violence in the country.

But a similar ceasefire was announced for same festival in 2018 and was not extended.

Spokesman for the Taliban said the ceasefire had been declared solely for Eid al-Fitr, which marks the end of the holy month of Ramadan.

Nigeria’s 5 years of a turnaround under Buhari

0

By Abe Kolawole

It was then military president, Ibrahim Babangida after several failed attempts to revamp the Nigerian economy while in office, let out in exasperation that, “ the Nigerian economy has defied all solutions.”

Babangida it was who introduced the Structural Adjustment Programme, SAP, devalued the naira, introduced the Second Tier Foreign Exchange Market and privatized many sectors of the economy.

But when all these did not post the desired result on the economy, he threw his arms up in surrender in that statement that portrayed his helplessness.

Fast forward to 27 years later, the country’s economy, which seemingly defied five administrations after Babangida and countless policies and strategies betrayed its rigidity, as they say in medical parlance, began to respond to treatment.

Two things, according to experts have made the difference in the approach the current administration has adopted which are impacting positively on the economy.

The first is the integrity of the man on the saddle, President Muhammadu Buhari and the second is his well known zero tolerance for corruption.

Whereas past Nigerian leaders have been able to come up with beautiful economic policies and programmes, such have failed to yield positive results due to the lack of discipline and moral rectitude required on the part of the leadership to see them through.

However, unlike others, Buhari came tailored-made for the job. Since his days in the military where he served in many credible positions including the federal commissioner for petroleum and natural resources to when he left office and served as the chairman of the Petroleum Trust Fund (PTF), the president has shown that he cannot be enticed with material things to shift focus from doing his job creditably well and can go to any length to ensure he protects the people’s interest.

With that sense of commitment, he has been able to churn out results in any assignment. It was for instance during his time at the petroleum ministry that many projects including federal government’s investment in pipelines and petroleum storage infrastructures and the building of about 21 petroleum storage depots all over the country from Lagos to Maiduguri and from Calabar to Gusau were done and when he became chairman of the PTF, it is on record that the project executed by the fund far surpassed the expectations of even the administration that established it.

Nigerians became nostalgic for a repeat of the Buhari leadership when they recounted that after he left office as Head of State, no administration has rivalled his commitment towards developing the country.

Since he was swoon into office in May 29 2015, the story of Nigeria has changed. The economy which was in doldrums began to show signs of recovery; states which could not pay salaries were helped to do so through the provision of bailout funds; small and medium scale enterprises began to boom and the agricultural sector was opened up through investment-friendly policies.

The power sector which had drained huge resources in the past without reciprocal improvement, quickly picked up as thousands of megawatts of power were not only added to the national grid but transmitted and distributed to consumers. That’s not all, though.

The petroleum sector recovered from its convulsion with just a push as queues at the filling stations completely disappeared and availability of petroleum products became the new order.

Corruption which defied many administrations was forced to take the back seat when the Treasury Single Account, TSA, was introduced and those who stole from the public till in the previous administrations were made to face the wrath of the law.

Not less than 8,000 ghost workers were uncovered in the public service and many public servants who were benefitting from corrupt practices of the past, living large at the expense of others, discerning that a new sheriff was in town, repented and adjusted their ways.

But perhaps the greatest legacy for which the current administration would be remembered for both now and in many years to come is on the aspect of security.

Prior to 2015, the security situation in the country was so embarrassing that Nigeria became a laughing stock the world over.

Its soldiers were the butt of jokes in other nations including even smaller African countries due to lack of motivation, poor welfare, inadequate equipment and training as well as corruption. Troops battling terrorists in the country and in the Lake Chad region were forced to abandon the fight to flee into other countries for safety.

Several communities in the North eastern part of the country were taken over by insurgents who boasted with glee that they are on the verge of carving out another country out of Nigeria as the then administration looked on helplessly.

The terrorists not assuaged by their takeover of communities on the fringes of the Lake Chad penetrated further into the country spreading the bloodletting activities to many states in the Northwest and Northcentral parts of the country and capped it all with their heavy presence and operations right in the heart of the federal capital in Abuja.

It was an all-time low for Nigeria as many infrastructure like roads, bridges, schools, hospitals and communication facilities were destroyed by the insurgents in addition to the many killed and the thousands abducted, raped and terrorized.

President Buhari, well aware of the crisis when he resumed made the issue of security part of his inaugural speech, promising to deal with the situation and promised to relocate the military command to the theatres of war.

He also searched hard to fish out those who would help him attain the goal of freeing Nigeria from terrorism that was making life so difficult for a vast majority of the populace and he appointed Lt. General Tukur Yusuf Buratai among other service chiefs, as the Chief of Army Staff. Jackpot

That was the watershed. The narrative on the war on terrorism, insurgency and sundry other crimes suddenly took a different twist.

The terrorists that were making videos of their exploits including bombing of significant edifices like the United Nations’ office, the police headquarters both in Abuja and attempt at attacking the office of the DSS began to flee as the heat turned on them.

They were in no time forced to evacuate from the FCT as the heat became unbearable. Their weekly rit/ual of blowing up worship centers in an average of one per week vanished and their threats to bring down the country fizzled out as the military took the war to their base and entered their fortresses in Sambisa Forest and the Mandara Hills.

The so called capital of their caliphate in Gwoza was overrun to the extent that the leader of the Boko Haram, Abubakar Shekau abandoned his location with his tails between his legs leaving behind his cherished flag and Quran which were retrieved and presented to the President by the Chief of Army Staff.

All the 20 local government spread between Adamawa, Borno and Yobe States which were under Boko Haram control were recaptured by Nigerian troops and all the communities liberated. This saw to the drop on the population of people at the Internally Displaced Persons, IDP, camps as many returned to their homes and communities.

The Buhari administration through support to the military and other security agencies also saved Nigeria from the threat of secession from some disgruntled elements in the Southeast and put a permanent stop to their criminal activities while the head of the outfit, Nnamdi Kanu fled.

Between 2015 and 2020, the military also launched several operational codes to take care of certain security issues affecting the country ranging from cattle rustling, kidnapping, highway robbery, ritual killings and banditry.

Each time the terrorists made futile attempts to bounce back through surprise attacks on certain towns and communities, the military showed resistance and resilience, turning around attacks on Biu, Damboa, Garkida, Michika and other places.

People in these communities have seen more than an actionable assurance that their security is now guaranteed and never have failed to thank the Buhari administration for that.

As the heat became too much on the terrorists, they resorted into harassing villages on the fringes of Nigerien borders in Katsina, seeing that they are losing their grip on all fronts. President Buhari, unrelenting, equally ordered for operations in that area that would took care of that problem permanently.

Indeed even residents of places far away from the North east like Abuja, Kaduna and Kano have also had a cause to remember what transpired in the years gone by and to thank the Buhari administration for the wonderful job it is doing which has made life more meaningful and secured for them.

Buhari administration’s capacity in defeating Boko Haram unprecedented – Professor Ahmed Danfulani

0

The President Muhammadu Buhari led All Progressives Congress, APC, administration has demonstrated unprecedented capacity in defeating terrorism and all forms violent crimes in Nigeria in the last five years, a former Director General of the National Instituteof Policy and Strategic studies, NIPSS, Prof. Danfulani has said.

Prof. Danfulani, who is the current Chancellor, CISS, while appraising the performance of the current administration in the last five years, says one area where it is indisputable that the current administration has done tremendously well and saved the lives of citizens is in the area of security.

The Professor while speaking with our reporters in Abuja, said the administration has done well in other areas like economy and fight against corruption, but said security is considered as central to the overall performance of an administration because it provides the base for other things like the formulation of policies and for planning as well as citizens wellbeing and infrastructural development.

He said an administration that knows it onions first and foremost sets out to secure the citizenry before any other thing as much cannot be achieved in an atmosphere of chaos and brigandage.

The former DG of NIPSS said the Buhari administration which came a time that the country was facing security challenges, did well to identify security as one of the cardinal challenges facing the country and quickly moved ahead to take drastic actions which has earned Nigeria respect and admiration from across the globe

Said the Prof: “From Day One, Buhari gave the service and other security chiefs in the country his agenda for the nation and gave them a marching order to move to the theatres of war.

“From that moment, the war on terrorism and insurgency in the country took a new dimension with Nigerian troops leading joint operations in the Lake Chad region as well ridding the homefront of the activities of the terrorists.”

Danfulani said it is within this period that Boko Haram was technically defeated and their operations bases weakened to the extent that they no longer were able to carry out operations in the country but fled to other countries ro sometimes attack soft targets.

He said many have tried to unravel the magic that Nigeria brought to bear to achieve this turnaround and pointed out that a lot has to do with the right leadership in the country and in the armed forces.

The Prof. explained that to have a clearer picture of what was brought to bear on the operations of the Nigeria military that is earning it positive results lately, the commitment of the country’s leadership to security had to be x-rayed.

The professor said the commitment of President Buhari to security can be categorised into three different phases to arrive at the conclusion that Nigeria is achieving results due to the right kind of leadership.

He said the three phases are, Buhari’s attitude to security while in the military, his efforts as a private citizen and his tactics as a president.

“Buhari, said the Prof, “while serving in the military, brought pride to Nigeria with the way he carried out assignments especially with the way he gave Chadian soldiers who were reported to have killed some Nigerian soldiers a bloody nose when he was serving in Maiduguri under the Shagari administration.”

The Professor said even as a private citizen, the President involved himself in processes to secure the nation and was constantly reminding the then government to be more committed to securing the country untill an attempt was made on his life while driving in Kaduna.

Danfulani said it was the culmination of these efforts that came to bear when Buhari took over the mantle of leadership as president and provided the support and impetus for Nigerian troops to defeat the insurgents, recapture many seized Nigerian territories and set many communities free.

“Who would have thought that a time would come in Nigeria when we will spend a whole week, then later months and now years without a bomb going off in any part of the country.

“Who would have thought that schools, hospitals and markets in Bama, Monguno, Gwoza and many other terrorised towns would reopen?” he asked.

Prof. Danfulani maintained that those that doubted Boko Haram was defeated were shocked to hear that the success of the military has even gone beyond making the terrorists flee but that the Boko Haram leader is even looking for ways to surrender.

The professor said the sucker punch came when the Boko Haram leader in an audio was heard weeping like a baby and pleading to Allah to intercede for them over what he called the wickedness of the Nigerian military.

“President Buhari, the chief of army staff and the troops in the field deserve a standing ovation for making the Boko Haram leader who is wont to talk tough all the time swallo his pride to cry for mercy.

“That is the height of the assurance needed by the citizens that the President through the armed forces has given priority to secure the lives of citizens and has succeeded in doing so,” he stated.

Prof. Danfulani said the President deserves commendation for appointing highly professional and well disciplined officers like Lt. Gen TY Buratai to lead the war against insurgency and terrorism.

He noted that the war against insurgency and terrorism took a different dimension since March this year when the Chief of army staff moved to the theater of operation and vowed not to return untill the terrorists are defeated.

“You can see that within a month, more than 500 of the insurgents have been killed, their weapons seized and their informants arrested.

“They have been reduced to a rag tag army clutching at straws in the most pitiable and uncoordinated manner.

“The Nigerian military is serious about bringing Boko Haram activities to an end and very soon people would see that some of the things achieved can only through a dedicated leadership with purpose that we currently have,” he stated.

Over 1000 Boko Haram/ISWAP terrorists killed in six weeks – Buratai

0

Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lt. Gen. Tukur Buratai, has revealed that over 1,000 Boko Haram/ISWAP terrorists were killed in the last six weeks.

The COAS made this known during a luncheon organized for the troops of “Operations Lafiya Dole” in Maiduguri on Sunday.

Nigeria has recorded tremendous gains in the war against insurgency since Lt. Gen. Buratai relocated to the Theatre of Operations.

Scores of the terrorists have been killed and several injured, with factional leader Abubakar Shekau reportedly on the brink of surrender.

In his address, the COAS assured that the troops are edging closer towards victory, especially with the insurgents suffering numerous casualties.

He added that a total of 84 high ranking members of Boko Haram logistics and informants have been arrested within the same time frame.

“We have put concerted efforts against BHTs and ISWAP,” he said, adding that: “We have severely dealt with the BH terrorists and ISWAP.

“We have successful displaced major camps of the BHTs. We have killed 1015 terrorists and ISWAP in the ongoing operation in Borno, Yobe and Adamawa state respectively.

“We have also arrested 84 BHTs logistics and information suppliers in the ongoing operation which started 12 April, 2020,” COAS said.

He appreciated the efforts of the Nigeria Air Force, Navy, Police Force, Department of State Services, Civilian Joint Task Force (JTF) and hunters for the resounding success against the terrorists. Earlier in the day, the Military had said it killed a total of 35 Boko Haram Terrorists (BHT) and ISWAP criminals at several attacks encountered in Borno State between 11th and 22nd May this year.

200 armed bandits killed by multiple air strikes in Zamfara, Katsina States

0

The Air Component of Operation HADARIN DAJI has killed over 200 armed bandits in multiple air strikes conducted at Ibrahim Mai’Bai’s Camp in Jibia Local Government Area (LGA) of Katsina State and Kurmin Kura in Zurmi LGA of Zamfara State on 22 and 23 May 2020.

Coordinator, Defence Media Operations Major General John Enenche who confirmed this in a statement Sunday said the air strikes were executed after series of Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance (ISR) missions led to the confirmation that the 2 locations were being used as hideouts for some notorious armed bandit leaders whilst also serving as collection points for rustled cattle.

Accordingly, Air Component, employing Nigerian Air Force ground attack aircraft and helicopter gunships, engaged the two locations in multiple passes, destroying the makeshift structures in the camps as well as killing the bandit leaders and their fighters.

”Human Intelligence (HUMINT) sources later confirmed that close to 200 armed bandits were killed in the air strikes at the target locations” He added.

Reacting to the development, the Chief of the Air Staff (CAS) Air Marshal Sadique Abubakar, commended the Air Component of Operation HADARIN DAJI for their professionalism and directed them to remain resolute towards eradicating all armed bandits thus achieving directives of the Chief of Defence Staff (CDS) of restoring normalcy in the North West and North Central Zones of the Country.

The Air Chief has also directed that additional assets be deployed to cover Kaduna, Niger, Nasarawa and Kogi States to frustrate any attempt of the bandits to relocate to adjoining States.

iSON: How a private company turned Oyo into COVID-19 danger zone

0

By Toby Prince

From merely 17 cases in over a two-month span, Oyo State has degenerated into a COVID-19 hotspot in the last week, now chasing a third century. It isn’t rocket science; a privately-owned virus-fisted company is behind this sudden surge.

When the coronavirus first took to Nigeria’s shores in February, Oyo was never envisaged to be a danger zone despite its close proximity to the epicentre, Lagos and Governor Seyi Makinde being one of the first patients. The Federal Capital Territory and Ogun State had all the gloom projections.

And so it was. The highly prevalent contagion took heels to the nation’s capital and Ogun in full speed like spinning tires on a Ferrari running through the gears. The infection swelled, prompting the Federal  Government to place both alongside Lagos on lockdown.

Governor Makinde was even accused of sloppiness and downplaying the virus. He hosted the Peoples Democratic Party rally in Ibadan early March. Critics believe he was very sluggish to enforce measures to contain the spread and when he eventually did, there were no palliatives. Although unconfirmed, the governor’s stand may be justified.

As of April 23, Nigeria had recorded 873 cases and 28 fatalities with the majority in Lagos, Abuja, Kano and Ogun. In Oyo meanwhile,  only 17 were confirmed, of which one died and another was transferred to Lagos. Ten persons were also discharged after testing negative twice, leaving only five active cases.

Fast forward to exactly one month later, infections has jumped to 233. Put in proper context, Oyo’s flaunt an alarming 7 per cent infection rate, with nearly eight persons testing positive daily in the last 30 days. The last stat doesn’t really hold water though as a bulk of the infection has come from the same origin in just one week.

On May 17th, Makinde announced 31 new cases. However, 30 of those were staff of a particular company in Ibadan South West Local Government Area. Authorities promptly shut it down but this marked the beginning of a new chapter.

“The COVID-19 confirmation tests for thirty-one suspected cases came back positive,” the governor said. “Thirty of these cases are members of staff of the same organisation based in Ibadan south west local government area.

“The organisation has been shut down and will be decontaminated. Intensified contact tracing has already commenced.”

While the state government maintained sealed lips, the company stepped up to alert its customers. iSON Xperiences, an internantional customer care service provider said it was taking measures to curb further spread.

“Some of our employees tested positive for COVID-19 at one of our Centres in Ibadan,” it said last week. “Employees with suspected risks have undergone the necessary test and have been placed in isolation under the supervision of the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC). Together with the authorities, we will ensure the full return of our employees to good health for their eventual resumption back at work.”

However, a return to work doesn’t seem feasible. Hours after the first announcement, eight more workers tested positive, bringing the number to 38. The figure rose further to 57 when, by May 18th, 19 more workers of the factory returned positive. The tally rose again to 63, with six more confirmed cases. The figure had jumped to 105 as of May 21, from 78 on May 20.

Another 11 tested positive on Friday, taking the tally to 116. And out of the 30 cases confirmed by the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control on Saturday, 27 were staff of iSON. Governor Makinde confirmed this in a tweet.

” Nine confirmed COVID-19 patients have received their second NEGATIVE test results and have been discharged. This brings the number of discharged cases in Oyo State to fifty-eight,” he wrote.

“Also, the COVID-19 confirmation tests for thirty suspected cases came back POSITIVE. Twenty-seven cases are from iSON Xperiences and one each from Ibadan SW, Ibadan SE and Oluyole Local Govt Areas. So, the total number of confirmed cases in Oyo State as at 5.30PM today is 233.”

This takes positive cases in iSON to 143. The company alone accounts for 61 per cent of infections in Oyo State, nudging it all the way up to seventh worst-hit only behind Lagos, Kano, Abuja, Katsina, Borno and Jigawa States.

iSON, meanwhile, has recorded more cases than 25 states in the country. In fact, it is  placed 13th in the overall ranking, slightly behind Gombe (145) and above Sokoto (116).

Yet as frightening as it may seem, worst may be ahead. iSON boosts a staff strength in thousands and customers in 10 folds, especially community transmission on the rise.

Breach of contract: Bizman sues Arik Air, demands N100m compensation

0

A businessman and Speech-communications specialist, Simon Imobo- Tswam, has sued Arik Air, one of the top players in the West African aviation industry, over breach of contract.

According to court documents, the suit, FH/ABJ/CS/345/2019, became inevitable after the airline refused to convey the businessman to Port Harcourt some time in 2018, and turned round to blame its failure on him.

The documents reveal that the businessman bought a Lagos-Return ticket online on 20th September, 2018, for N34,500. 00 only. The date for the trip was 22nd October, 2018, with the return date three days later.

But the court learnt that on 18th October, 2018, the businessman had the ticket opened since he could no longer travel due to other engagements.

And then on 29th October, 2018, the plaintiff went to the Defendants’ office at Trascorp, Abuja, and rerouted the trip to Port Harcourt (i.e. Abuja-Port Harcourt-Abuja). The date for this re-routed trip was 1st November and return was on 5th November, 2018.

The businessman was accordingly surcharged an additional N20, 216.00 only which he paid via Keystone Bank’s POS.

Trouble started for the Plaintiff when Arik Air told him on 1st November, 2018, that he would not be conveyed to Port Harcourt on the false claim that the Plaintiff’s name did not tally with the code on his ticket.

All the businessman’s explanations that the ticket was issued by Arik Air (with all the information on it: his name, code, date, destination etc), and that the Port Harcourt trip was very important to the passenger, fell on deaf ears. All pleadings by the businessman that he bought the ticket in his name; and that it is the same name he has given Arik staff in the over 20 times that he has flown on Arik Air, did not sway Arik staff.

The aggrieved passenger thereafter wrote to the airline through his lawyers, Chris Aashi, Esq., of Fairfield Chambers, on 26th November, 2018, and the Defendants replied on 3rd December, 2018.

In their response, Arik Air, now the Defendants, refused to take responsibility or make a refund – the arline rather claimed that the Plaintiff bought his ticket in another person’s name, and should blame himself for his mistakes.

It was following this that the Plaintiff sued the airline for “wronful and complete breach of contract; a refund of the N54, 716.00, being the total sum paid to the Defendants; and a claim of N100illion only for general damages.

The matter comes up on 2nd June, 2020, before Justice Evelyn Maha, for mention.

The airline has a flood of court cases arising from breach of contract, missing luggage or cancelled flights.

It would be recalled that only last week, an FCT High Court, presided over by Justice Danlamin Senchi, gave judgement against the airline, ordering it to pay an aggrieved passenger, Mr. Modibbo, N10million for “serious breach of contract.”

German president thanks Muslims for Ramadan lockdown conduct

0

The holy month is normally a time for coming together, rather than being separated by social distancing measures. The German president also expressed his alarm at the “hatred and exclusion” directed towards Muslims.

German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier praised Muslims on Friday for adhering to the country’s lockdown measures during Ramadam, while also calling for an end to the hatred directed towards the religious minority.

In a message on the eve of the end of the month of fasting and reflection, Steinmeier wrote that many Muslims would have found the restrictions particularly difficult. “I would like to thank all of you who adhered to these strict rules and contributed to our first success in the fight against the virus.”

Ramadan is seen as a time when Muslims come together, rather than being kept apart, which became necessary due to the lockdown and social distancing measures.

Steinmeier also pledged determined action against religiously motivated attacks. “Hatred and exclusion, violent attacks targeting Muslims, attacks on mosques — we cannot tolerate this, we cannot allow this.”

Last year, a total of 871 attacks aimed at Muslims or their institutions took place in Germany and the president said it was everyone’s responsibility, including the state to protect Muslims.

Steinmeier recalled the incident on February 19 when a gunman motivated by right-wing and racist ideology killed nine people in two hookah bars the city of Hanau, in western Germany. All of the victims had foreign heritage, including Turkish and Bosnian.

Pamphlets and video material found at the home of the 43-year-old man, who allegedly also murdered his mother before committing suicide, indicated a racist motive behind the onslaught.

Steinmeier said he had been deeply affected by the incident in Hanau, describing it as an attack on peaceful coexistence and on all the values shared by Germans, including dignity, tolerance, diversity and freedom of worship.
