Commissioner: Lagos to Become 24-Hour Economy via Energy Innovations

0

The Lagos State Government has promised to provide methods to make the city’s economy run around the clock using sustainable and dependable energy.

The Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources has revealed a bold future plan to improve electricity reliability, promote local manufacturing of power infrastructure components, and provide universal energy access in order to realize this objective.

At the present Ministerial Press Briefing to mark Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s six years in office, Commissioner for Energy and Mineral Resources Engr. Biodun Ogunleye spoke about these strategic aims.

The full implementation of the Lagos Electricity Market structure under the Lagos State Electricity Law, 2024, Ogunleye said, is a key initiative of the Ministry. This will entail licensing independent electricity distribution companies, assisting embedded generation, and operationalizing the Lagos Independent System Operator (LISO) in order to stabilize the power ecosystem.

“With dependable and sustainable energy solutions, we are proactively moving Lagos towards a 24-hour economy,” Ogunleye said.

Along with plans to expand these initiatives throughout rural and riverine areas, he said the Ministry is also working to finish and power eight interconnected mini-grids in underprivileged communities.

“Long-term energy planning and infrastructure investment will be guided by the Lagos Integrated Resource Plan, which is presently being developed.”

In addition, Engr. Ogunleye revealed that agreements are being reached to collaborate with domestic and foreign investors on the local production of power assets such transformers, meters, cables, and switchgear.

In addition to strengthening the energy value chain, Ogunleye claims that this will increase industrial capacity, generate jobs, and lessen the State Government’s reliance on imports.

In order to guarantee that no community is left behind in the energy transformation, Lagos is also planning to activate the Lagos State Electrification Agency (LSEA) and strengthen its partnership with the Rural Electrification Agency under the DARES initiative.

The Commissioner stated, “When all of these plans come to fruition, Lagos will have effectively established itself as a model for sub-national energy transformation in Africa, utilizing partnerships, technology, and policy to power prosperity.”

Several Labour Party factions, pro-Peter Obi movements, and prominent Obidient groups in five Nigerian states have officially joined the African Democratic Congress (ADC), citing leadership struggles and lack of internal democracy in the Labour Party.

This major realignment is expected to impact Nigeria’s political landscape ahead of the 2027 elections. The ADC has promised inclusiveness, grassroots engagement, and youth involvement. Political analysts believe this could change opposition dynamics and influence future electoral strategies.

Probe Allegation Of Financial Inducement To Charge Me To Court, Lawyer Writes IGP

0

Human Rights Lawyer, Barrister Victor Giwa, has called on the Inspector- General of Police, Mr Kayode Egbetokun, to investigate the Commissioner of Police, legal services of the Nigeria Police, Chiozoba Oyakhire Ehiede and Ms Asabe Waziri, over allegation of frivolous charge filed against him and one other.

Barrister Giwa, in a letter dated 23rd May, 2025, asked the IGP to probe the allegation of financial inducement to charge him to court.

He is also seeking the intervention of the IGP to unravel the connection between Asabe Waziri and CP Legal, the withdrawal of the charge against him and re-investigation of charge no: CR/150/25 between IGP v. Victor Giwa and another

According to him, he is being charged to court for standing against falsehood and lies and insisting that the right thing should be done.

Parts of the letter read, “I write to report the various illegal and unlawful activities carried out against me by CP CHIOZOBA OYAKHIRE EHIEDE and Asabe Waziri

“Asabe Waziri who is a senior management staff of Nigeria National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) has been boasting about how she use the police to deal with me, by charging me with various offences , to deter me
from opposing his Illegal and unlawful action against me and my client Cecil Osakwe.

“The CP Legal knowingly, gave unlawful advisory to the IGP in aid of ASABE WAZIRI and caused officers of the Nigeria police force led by Csp Maga, to FORCEFULLY BREAK INTO AN APARTMENT destroying doors and forcefully putting ASABE WAZIRI in possession of a the flats situated at NO 1 Mekong close Maitama, Abuja.

“This was done on the June 26th 2024, while there was pending application for STAY OF EXECUTION, Notice of Appeal with Appeal NO: CA/ABJ/CV/246/2022 to the Court of Appeal and positive Order of Court in High Court Keffi , Nasarawa State in Suit no: NSD/K70F /2024, served on Asabe Waziri and the Police.

“In a reckless manner, I was arrested as the lawyer to Cecil Osakwe and the Abeh Signature Apartment forcefully taken to the apartment and made to open the flats. I insisted that I will not be able to do that, since that matter is subject of litigation in both the Supreme Court and the High Court.

“However, at the instance and advice of CP Legal, the police officers break the doors of the flats and put Asabe Waziri in possession. Asabe Waziri has remained in the flats till date.

“The CP legal, knowing that I will insist on the lawful action, conspired with Asabe Waziri to fetch and fish out different cases against me to set me up with the aim of raising charges against me.

“The CP Legal is using his office, to raise charges agaitist me with the intention of silencing me from speaking out against his illegal and unlawful despicable action , that puts the imtage of the Nigerian police into disrepute, just to favour Asabe Waziti. As at today, the CP has filed charges against me at the instance of Asabe Waziri’s petition.

“The Charge with Charge NO: CR/150/25 filed at the FCT High Court is aimed at embarrassing and harassing me to satisfy the boasting and the yearnings of Asabe Waziri .

“I humbly submit, that the current charge against me in Charge NO:CR/150/25 is baseless, frivolous and vindictive. It is self-serving and is borne out of Asabe Waztri’s quest to use the CP legal to “deal with me”.

Dangote Group Unveils Bold Export Growth Strategy for Nigeria

0

Aliko Dangote, president of Dangote Industries Limited (DIL), Africa’s richest man, has announced plans to increase Nigeria’s export capacity with an ambitious project that focuses on fertilizer exports that may generate up to $7 million per day.

Dangote referred to his export strategy as an unprecedented business endeavor for Nigeria while speaking at the Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA) headquarters in Lagos.

“We will be exporting roughly 16,000 tons of fertilizer over the next two years,” he stated. That amounts to roughly $6.5 million to $7 million in revenue that will be entering the nation every day. We want to export about eight cargoes of fertilizer.

With an annual production capacity of three million metric tonnes, the Dangote Fertilizer factory is Africa’s largest granulated urea producing complex. This facility has been essential in supporting Nigeria’s agricultural sector and reducing reliance on imported inputs.

The vision of the business tycoon goes much beyond the shipping of fertilizer. In an interview with NPA director Abubakar Dantsoho on Sunday, he presented detailed plans to increase exports of a variety of products, such as cement, coal, polypropylene, and various petroleum derivatives.

“Our export business will soon be greatly expanded. As some of you may know from visiting our cement factory in Itori, we already export cement from Nigeria. He said that his company would start exporting coal in a few weeks and stated, “We have a whole factory of six million tons for cement export.”

More than 25 million tons of various products will be exported from the enormous $20 billion petroleum refinery, which is presently in operation. Among other things, these cargoes will include up to 700,000 metric tons of polypropylene.

Dangote explained the unusual scope of the planned maritime operations in the Lekki area. A million barrels of crude oil will be transported annually by 240 crude oil tankers, according to the expected operations. Furthermore, more than 600 product carriers and a large number of fertilizer delivery ships will be needed for the activities.

He declared, “This is an operation that has never, ever been seen in the country.” “However, if NPA fails to provide us with the services we require, our operations will collapse.”

The industrialist emphasized that more government support for the ports authority’s growth plans is crucial to its implementation. He emphasized the need for more maritime resources and equipment.

“With their own hands, the [NPA] will not be able to perform these tasks. They must have the necessary tools. “They need more tugboats,” he said.

In order to guarantee the authority obtains sufficient government support, Dangote is dedicated to promoting institutional aid.

He went on to say, “We will also be putting in a few words in the necessary quarters to make sure that NPA gets all the necessary assistance from the Federal Government.”

NPA Director Dantsoho underlined the authority’s dedication to meeting the growing maritime needs of the Dangote Group, acknowledging their significance for the growth of Nigeria’s blue economy and marine industries.

Dangote’s initial projections of 600 vessels per year have already been exceeded by current port activities. Since October 1, 2024, the authority has handled and processed more than 57 vessels every month, surpassing initial projections.

That exceeds the projection. In the upcoming year or two, Nigerian ports’ operations will undoubtedly quadruple, Dantsoho said.

Authorization has been secured for new deep-water port developments in Ibom, Bakassi, Olokola, Ondo, and Badagry locations, while infrastructure upgrades at Tin-Can and Apapa port facilities are expected to start in the third quarter.

The administration is worried about these additional ports. We’ll start to notice that these ports will materialize very soon,” he stated.

This extensive export growth is a game-changer for Nigeria’s trade profile, with the potential to establish the nation as a significant exporter in a number of industrial areas. Combining fertilizer, cement, petroleum products, and other commodities might greatly increase foreign exchange profits and improve Nigeria’s standing in international markets.

Coordination between government and private sector infrastructure development, especially in port facilities and maritime support services, will be crucial to the success of these initiatives.

Nigerian Exchange Reaches New Peak as Investors Add N583bn

This week, the Nigerian Exchange (NGX) had a solid performance, with market participants adding ₦583 billion in value, sending the All-Share Index to previously unheard-of heights.

Investor confidence has been steadily increasing since Monday’s trading session, when it started to gain speed.

With a strong 0.85% increase of 924.50 points, the benchmark index closed at a record high of 109,953.12. The durability of Nigeria’s capital market is demonstrated by this milestone, which also indicates the growing optimism among market participants.

Even though prices were rising, trade activity was trending in the opposite direction. There was a 34.98% fall in transaction volumes and a 38.78% decline in the overall trade value. 637.54 million shares valued at ₦11.09 billion were exchanged in 19,775 trades, according to market statistics.

The market’s growth was fueled by a number of mid-tier and blue-chip businesses. The session’s best performer was ARADEL, which recorded remarkable gains of 9.98%. Other noteworthy performers were CILEASING (+7.32%), LINKASSURE (+8.16%), ABCTRANS (+8.43%), and UPL (+9.86%).

ARADEL, BUAFOODS, and other high-quality equities attracted investors’ attention, and the increase was bolstered by judicious purchases in good businesses. The overall growth in market capitalization was greatly aided by this selective approach.

The largest trading volume, representing 11.36% of all stock transactions, was FIDELITYBK. The next-highest volume activity was 9.02% for CUSTODIAN and 8.73% for ACCESSCORP. Rounding out the top five most active stocks by volume were GTCO and ZENITHBANK.

Despite varying sectoral performance, GTCO led in value terms with 15.76% of overall trade value, indicating sustained interest in big banking stocks.

At the end of the day, there was a positive market breadth, with 33 rising equities and 29 falling items. At -10.00%, TRIPPLEG led the decliners, indicating that not all stocks took part in the gain. Other noteworthy losers were VFDGROUP (-9.32%), MRS (-9.97%), and CUSTODIAN (-9.63%).

In all five of the major indicators, sectoral performance showed a varied picture. Despite consumer goods rising 2.20%, the oil and gas industry saw robust gains of 3.02%. Banking, on the other hand, fell by 0.02% while the insurance industry fell by 1.06%. The manufacturing sector did not change.

A growth of 0.85% was achieved by the whole market capitalization, which increased by ₦582.90 billion, bringing the total above ₦69 trillion. This performance indicates a consistent level of investor confidence in Nigeria’s economic prospects and reflects their hunger for high-quality stocks.

Selective buying patterns and record-high index levels point to a mature market where investors are becoming more interested in intrinsic value than speculative trading. For the long-term growth and stability of the market, this tendency is encouraging.

The FCTA said this week that it will begin taking ownership of 4,794 properties that have been revoked due to non-payment of ground rent for periods ranging from 10 to 43 years, beginning Monday, May 26, 2025.

The administration stated that they will take custody of these assets regardless of their ownership status.

Lere Olayinka, Senior Special Assistant on Public Communications and Social Media to FCT Minister Nyesom Wike, along with the Director of Land Administration, Chijioke Nwankwoeze, and the Director of the Department of Development Control, Mukhtar Galadima, made the announcement during a news conference in Abuja on Friday.

Recall that on March 19, 2025, the administration withdrew the Wadata Plaza, which acts as the Peoples Democratic Party’s (PDP) national secretariat in Wuse Zone 5, due to repeated failures to pay ground rent.

2027: Atiku, PDP React Sharply to APC Governors’ Support for Tinubu’s Re-election Bid

0

Recent endorsements of President Bola Tinubu by governors and All Progressives Congress (APC) stakeholders have been rejected by former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
Ahead of the 2027 elections, they were said to have labeled them as symptoms of desperation and panic. The opposition leaders are still optimistic that the ruling party would be defeated by their coalition.
Regardless of Tinubu’s support, Atiku’s media adviser, Paul Ibe, stated his strong optimism that the alliance can contest and win the general elections in 2027.

Ibe said that the alliance is unfazed by political wrangling and compared its position to that of a student who has studied hard for an exam, according to Vanguard.

“You can sleep well the night before a test and wake up certain that you can pass if you’ve studied hard for it. That’s our coalition’s stance,” Ibe stated.

The Nigerian people, not the ruling party’s political maneuvers, will be the real judges of the 2027 election, he continued.

Ibe added, “This administration’s terrified mood is evident in the recent endorsements. Insurgents are regaining territory in Borno State and other areas, causing an unprecedented level of insecurity. Due to the exorbitant cost of living, families are finding it difficult to cover their basic expenses. But instead of addressing these pressing problems, the government has mostly concentrated on playing political games.

Along with accusing Tinubu’s administration of using anti-corruption agencies to pressure opposition politicians into joining the APC, he said that political pressure was the primary cause of many of these defections rather than ideological reasons.

“Ideology or preference for the APC are not the driving forces behind these defections,” Ibe claimed. They are forcing politicians to join the ruling party and holding them captive. Former governors and the current administration are targeting some for corruption, forcing them to pay a ransom that shows up as defections.

“Defectors are being pressured in Delta State and other places by means of the so-called ‘quiet bomb.'”

Crisis Denied, Endorsements Criticized by PDP
In his comments, PDP National Organizing Secretary Umar Bature also said that endorsements do not ensure election success.

He brought up the fact that former President Goodluck Jonathan lost the 2014 election even though he had the support of 21 governors.

According to Bature, Tinubu has 22 supporters. Don’t worry about anything. The only thing left to do is wait. Whether you have done the right thing for the country is the question, not whether you have been endorsed. Promotions are only for show. They are used when people realize they aren’t acting in the best interests of the people they purport to represent. A crisis does not exist. Simply put, members are voicing their opinions. Time will tell whether or not they declare their desire to leave the party. These problems will be resolved on their own.

Coalition Agenda Merely a Performance for Tinubu – APC’s Eta on El-Rufai

After failing to get a position in the current administration, former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai chose to join the effort to establish a coalition against President Bola Tinubu, according to former All Progressives Congress (APC) National Vice Chairman Hilliard Eta.
El-Rufai, former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, and Peter Obi, the Labour Party’s (LP) 2023 presidential candidate, were reportedly leading the effort to establish a coalition against Tinubu.
There is nothing unique about El-Rufai, Eta said during an appearance on AIT Focus Nigeria, emphasizing that he and other individuals played a bigger role in electing Tinubu as president than the former governor.

Tinubu is an expert at establishing alliances, the APC chieftain said, dismissing the coalition move.
He stated that the most of them were once friends of the current president, and individuals such as El-Rufai believed he may be appointed Minister under Asiwaju.

You raise the question of whether El-Rufai would be working on coalition today if he had been minister at the time. He would undoubtedly be showing Nigerians his report card at this point in his government, whether he wants to or not.

“Let me tell El-Rufai that if we couldn’t be ministers, why should he be special? People like us played a bigger role in the president’s creation than he did.

Individuals like Kwankwaso and Aregbesola were strong allies of Tinubu; they are self-centered and narrow-minded.

“Keep in mind that this is the maestro of coalition building; he has been there since the days of NADECO. Keep that in mind while you are fighting and trying to construct a coalition.

Since self-preservation, not enlightenment, is what motivates many of our people to enter politics, what you are doing now is really a game for him. What makes you believe that it won’t come to you later if it hasn’t come to you yet? Even if it doesn’t affect you personally, everyone benefits when the nation improves.
