20 inmates killed in Madagascar prison breakout

0

Twenty inmates have been killed in a shoot-out with police during a prison breakout in Madagascar on Sunday.

Madagascar’s justice ministry said tens of prisoners attacked guards with rocks and grabbed a gun as they tried to flee the Farafangana prison in the southeast of the Indian Ocean island.

Thirty-seven of the 88 who managed to escape were captured by the police and army while eight were wounded in the shoot-out.

Thirty-one inmates are still on the run, the ministry said, vowing to boost security at all penitentiaries across the country.

Mass prison escapes are not uncommon in Madagascar.

In 2016, approximately 40 detainees broke out of a high-security prison in Toliary in southern Madagascar.

Mali military junta seeks three years’ rule, agrees to free deposed President Keita

0

The junta that seized power in Mali wants a military-led transitional body to rule for three years, and has accepted that ousted president Ibrahim Boubacar Keita return home, sources in a visiting West African delegation said Sunday.

“The junta has affirmed that it wants a three-year transition to review the foundations of the Malian state. This transition will be directed by a body led by a soldier, who will also be head of state,” a source in the ECOWAS delegation in capital Bamako told AFP.

“The government will also be predominantly composed of soldiers” under the junta’s proposal, the source said on condition of anonymity.

The source added that the junta has agreed to “free president Keita”, who has been detained along with other political leaders since the coup on Tuesday, and he “will be able to return to his home” in Bamako.

“And if he wants to travel abroad for treatment, that is not a problem,” the ECOWAS source said.

Prime Minister Boubou Cisse, who has been detained with Keita at a military base outside the capital where the coup began, would be moved to a secure residence in the city, the source said.

A junta official confirmed to AFP the decisions on the fate of Keita and Cisse, as well as that “the three-year transition would have a military president and a government mostly composed of soldiers”.

The coup followed months of protests calling for Keita to resign as public discontent with the government grew over the country’s brutal Islamist insurgency and collapsing economy.

While it was met by international condemnation, thousands of opposition supporters celebrated the president’s ouster in the streets of Bamako.

The junta has said it “completed the work” of the protesters and has vowed to stage elections “within a reasonable time”.

However Mali’s neighbours have called for Keita to be reinstated, saying the purpose of the visit by the delegation from the regional ECOWAS bloc was to help “ensure the immediate return of constitutional order”.

Leaders of the military junta led by Colonel Assimi Goita and mediators from West Africa’s regional bloc led by Nigeria’s former president, Goodluck Jonathan, met behind closed doors all day on Sunday.

“We have been able to agree on a number of points but not yet on all the discussions,” Jonathan told reporters on Sunday night after negotiations that lasted around nine hours.

A spokesman for the military junta, Colonel Ismael Wague, said: “We reached compromise on certain aspects and the negotiations will continue tomorrow.”

The overthrow of Keita on Tuesday has been condemned abroad, but celebrated by many in a country battling an Islamist insurgency and months of political unrest following a disputed legislative election in March.

The 15-nation Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), weary of prolonged instability in Mali and the potential for similar power grabs in the region, have taken a hard line on the coup.

It suspended Mali from its decision-making institutions, shut borders and halted financial flows with the country.

Mali coup must serve as a warning to African leaders who cling to power – PLO Lumumba

0

Renowned Pan-Africanist, Patrick Loch Otieno Lumumba has stated that the recent incident in Mali must serve as a serious warning to other African leaders who hold on to power for a very long time.

The very vocal scholar known to be an advocate for good governance added in clear terms that he does not support the idea of changing non-performing governments through unconstitutional means, especially military coup.

He stated in a short Facebook post that, “although the seizure of power by the Military is to be discouraged, African Presidents who cling to power to the detriment of the population must know that soldiers are also Citizens who will not be indifferent.”

He further narrowed the advice down to some specific long-serving leaders such as Paul Biya of Cameroon, Alpha Conde of Guinea and Ivorian Alassane Ouattara. “Let KEITA’S fate be a warning to CONDE, BIYA, OUATTARA and others,” he said.

The well-respected Professor known to be an advocate for good governance, however, stated that he does not support change of government through unconstitutional means

The Truth About APPG’s Christian Genocide in Nigeria

0

By Philip Agbese

The June 2020 launch of a report entitled “Nigeria – Unfolding Genocide?” by the All-Party Parliamentary Group (APPG) for International Freedom of Religion or Belief in the Parliament of the United Kingdom should be of concern to Nigerians and of course the Federal Government. The report concluded that there is an ongoing genocide against Christians and minority ethnic groups in Nigeria with lines like “The APPG’s inquiry found that Nigerian Christians are experiencing devastating violence, with attacks by armed groups of Islamist Fulani herders resulting in the killing, maiming, dispossession and eviction of thousands.”

Our worry here should not be about the alarm of genocide, which is false. We should rather be concerned that the descendants of people, who once raped the African continent through slavery, forced conversions, exploitation of human and material resources, are back trying to continue in the steps of their forefathers by defining for us what we should accept as our reality. If they succeed in doing this, then they will again succeed in turning us against each other for their own advantage.

To be clear, the All-Party Parliamentary Group (APPG) is a grouping in the Parliament of the United Kingdom that is composed of members of parliament from all political parties. The APPG for International Freedom of Religion or Belief is therefore across political divides so the views they expressed cannot be dismissed as being that of narrow interest. Its members are not riff-raffs being the representatives of the people, which means they speak for their country and it is, therefore, safe to attribute the views expressed in their report to their country.

That report is tragic because of its implied intention; a desire to add sectarian strife to the foreign-backed horror show we are already subjected to on a daily basis. The APPG report practically trivialized the killings by Boko Haram, Islamic State West African Province (ISWAP), bandits, transhumance related violence manifesting as a farmers-herders crisis, communal clashes and even street gangs related violence as being directed at exterminating Christians.

I am a Christian and an activist with a human rights background, which makes the views expressed by these parliamentarians repulsive to me. Everyone should feel bad that anyone would be killed in their own country, people should be safe anywhere and no one’s life should be cut short for any reason. This much was captured by John Donne when he said, “Any man’s death diminishes me because I am involved in mankind, and therefore never send to know for whom the bell tolls; it tolls for thee.”

The current reality is that Nigerians are being killed by the aforementioned criminal elements. It is not only Christians or Muslims that have been murdered in our country; animists, agnostics, atheists and persons of diverse creeds have met violent ends at the hands of people running errands of dark forces. APPG’s attempt to weaponize or justify any kind of killings on religious biases is, however, a disservice to God and humanity and will in no way advance religion or belief.

Most of the input into the APPG report derived from compromised reports authored by organizations that have not been able to conceal their vested interests while its interviews were with a persona pursuing blends of sectarian and ethnic agenda. This is a recipe for distortion and the report was promptly contorted beyond comprehension, which perhaps tallied with what the APPG wants in the first place as could be seen from the additional spin-offs that have been made from that document.

Had the group made the efforts to get at the facts or were it less jaundiced by its desired outcome, it would have been able to report the details that are known to the victims of these attacks and survivors. There have been instances when attacks seemed to have been targeted at Christians only for the contrary to emerge upon further interrogation or investigation of the matter. For instance, when gunmen killed 13 worshipers at a mass on Sunday, August 6, 2017, at Amakwa Ozubulu, in Ekwusogo Local Government Area of Anambra State, the initial belief was that the attackers were Boko Haram terrorists.

It took weeks after misdirected anger and dangerous ethnoreligious tension to discover that what people thought was not the case. Great Chinedu Akpunonu (44), Vincent Ike (57), Chukwudi Ugwu (30) and Onyebuchi Mbanefo (46) were arraigned for that heinous crime in the house of God; they were neither members of the Boko Haram terror group neither are they Fulani; they are mercenaries sent to kill their own kinsmen as part of a drug war that spilt over from South Africa.

In May 2018, in two separate incidents, the police arrested suspected gunrunners for the murderous elements killing people in Benue-Taraba axis. The first suspect was 36 years old Morris Ashwe from Mbajima Village in Katsina-Ala Local Government Area of Benue State, who confessed and admitted supplying firearms and ammunition to the notorious and most wanted vicious and notorious gang leader of the militia, murderers and kidnappers Terwase Akwaza aka Gana. Similarly, Kabiru Idris, Miracle Emmanuel and Husseini Safiyanu were arrested in Taraba State with five AK47 rifles, 13 AK47 Magazines, 83 Rounds of AK47. They confessed to have supplied other firearms and ammunition to Militia groups, armed bandits and other criminals that have been attacking and killing innocent people in villages in Taraba and Benue States. Note should be made of the identity and names of the arrested suspects.

In the northwest, where bandits have attacked communities, killed people and plunder their resources, the victims are across religious divides, too, even though a larger number of them were Muslims. It will be interesting to see how the APPG report reflected on that since it is not impossible for these killings to have been classified as the mass murder of Christians.

However, the above scenarios are not meant to distract from the fact that Boko Haram, bandits and other criminal elements violently deprive others of their lives. Rather, it is to point out the risk of misleading people to cultivate hatred for others along sectarian and ethnic lines because some foreigners decided to frame conversations in manners that turn Nigerians against each other.

The other fallacy in the APPG report is the claim that President Muhammadu Buhari’s administration is permitting genocide against Christians in Nigeria. This is not true and it is a false claim that should be condemned by all. First, on the basis of the foregoing, Nigerians are being killed and it is not about the creed of the victim but about the unwarranted loss of human lives. Secondly, there is no record that security was ever prioritized for Muslim enclaves to the detriment of Christian areas. The efforts to address the challenge of insecurity in the country has been wide-sweeping.

Thirdly, there continue to be efforts to curtail the activities of the criminal elements killing people in different parts of the country. Only a few days ago, the Joint Military Troops of Operation Whirl Stroke arrested seven persons in connection with the massacre of over 13 persons in Apa Local Government Area of Benue State. The army had in the preceding week arrested informants for bandits, gunrunners and also killed some of them in operations to rid the country of these criminals. The war against terrorism is also on course with Boko Haram members being pushed continually into the desert.

The APPG is right that there is a genocide, but it is not along a religious line. It is a pogrom targeted at Nigerians irrespective of their ethnicity or religion, a pogrom that no APPG has attempted to call a halt on. At the helm of that genocide unfolding in Nigeria are the very members of the APPG.

They are part of decisions that promote instability in the Middle East and North Africa, the source of some of the weapons and fighters that flood into the Lake Chad Basin and have kept Boko Haram’s campaign of terror going. Had President Buhari been indifferent, like members of that group want to believe, more Nigerians would have been killed. So, it is fair to ask that the APPG at the very least acknowledge that the President and the Nigerian military have against all odds prevented the kind of catastrophe that analysts had projected for the country as a result of the activities of certain countries that directly and indirectly impact Nigeria.

Still, one will not ask the APPG not to meddle in Nigeria’s affairs since it will, anyways. The fair demand to make on the group is for it to leverage its clout for mobilizing and galvanizing support for Nigeria’s capacity to respond to the hydra security challenges being compounded by external and other factors. It should, for instance, prevail on the United Kingdom to review its foreign policy in a way that prevents terrorists from getting support, which includes addressing the chaos that resulted from meddling in the Middle East and North Africa. It should also canvass for Nigeria to get support in terms of military equipment and hardware to fight those that are depriving citizens of their lives.

The greatest support that the All-Party Parliamentary Group (APPG) for International Freedom of Religion or Belief in the parliament of the United Kingdom, can lend, however, is to desist from contributing to the propaganda efforts of terrorists through the publication of reports that distort reality. Every Nigerian life matters. APPG should not put lives at risk by provoking sectarian strife.

Allegation of Christian genocide in Nigeria false and misleading, Inter-Faith forum queries UK parliamentary group

0

The Youth Christian and Muslim Forum of Nigeria (YCMFN) says allegations of Christian genocide in Nigeria by All-Party Parliamentary Group in the United Kingdom (APPG)  is false and misleading.

Instead of paint religious element behind violence in the country, the inter-faith forum rather advised the UK parliamentarians to concern itself with the sanctity of all human lives irrespective of religion or ethnic biases and see to doing enough in collaboration with the Nigerian government to halt any further killings anywhere in the country.

YCMFN made this strong stand known in a virtual press statement on Saturday signed by its National President, Pastor Phillip Attah.

A recent report by APPG on ‘Freedom of Religion and Belief, Nigeria: Unfolding Genocide?’, had alleged religious colouration in Boko Haram, banditry and other violent attacks across the country.

However, YCMFN said such claims are biased and one-sided malicious narrations from those who do not wish the nation well.

While admitting the security challenges in the country, the inter-faith group rejected the attempts to attach religious dimension, acknowledging the progress made under President Muhammadu Buhari.

“We consider it most distasteful for anyone to attempt to coin a narrative that ‘Christians are actually the target of this murderous group’. Worst of all is the attempt to rope the government of President Buhari into this, or perhaps the attempt to drag the armed forces of Nigeria and sister security agencies into the evil religious narration,” Pastor Attah disclosed.

The statement partly reads; ” Nigeria no doubt is battling some security challenges that have been ongoing for a while now. What we, however, want to set straight is the fact that the killings going on are largely religion blind. Are there killings that involve Christians? The answer is yes, Christians are certainly murdered in Nigeria, but the fact remains out there that this evil terrorist has killed more Muslims and are in fact killing more Muslims.

“These terrorist are despicable savages that know no one. So long as you don’t support their extreme version of Islam, of which many Muslims in Nigeria don’t support you are regarded as an enemy and become a target of their killings.

” We know some mischievous elements will want to play the religious card with the ongoing security challenge, we worry less about them, since many of the perpetrators of this narrow and unfortunate narrative do so for their own pecuniary gain.

“We are however concerned about our friends outside the country who may not be well informed about the intrigues and the realities of these security challenges and may want to fall for the one-sided narration of some mischief-makers.

“President Buhari’s campaign was anchored on the return of peace to the troubled northeast region and indeed everywhere else in Nigeria. This promised he has been able to fulfil to an extent with the help of the great men and women of the armed forces.

” Before the coming on board of this government almost 14 local government areas were under the total control of the terrorist group less than 18 months in an office all territories hitherto held by the terrorist have been recovered and normalcy returned to most of these areas.

” There cannot be any doubt about the government’s sincerity in the battle against insurgents and all other forms of criminality going on in the country. The president has made more funding available for the welfare and procurement of required tools to eliminate the terrorist.

” Whilst we admit the security challenges are not gone. We totally reject the attempt by enemies of the state to bring a religious dimension to the current security challenge because it is totally false and only an attempt to whip up religious sentiments to further divide us and distract us from our focus on taking out the terrorist who are the real enemies of the people.

” In the north-west region of the country where the killings are now most rampant due to activities of bandits and kidnappers, 90% of the victims are Muslims, should we then say they are being killed because they are Muslims? Take Zamfara State for example with one of the highest numbers of deaths in the North West yet over 98% of those killed there are Muslims. So would anyone now say Muslims are being targeted in the north for a genocide?

” Yes, the people killed in Zamfara are Muslims but they were definitely not killed because of their faith. The same way many Christians must have been killed in the many years of these terrorist activities but not all were killed because of their faith.

” Take the middle belt, for example, there have been decades of clashes between herders and farmers over the years, unfortunately except we collectively sit and find long-lasting solutions, peace may remain elusive in that region. There are several reasons for the conflict in that region”.

The Youth Christian and Muslim Forum of Nigeria, however, called on ” all Muslims and Christians across the country to unite and promote peace and unity amongst ourselves”.

Mutiny: Coalition raises alarm, says enemies planning to use Senate to destabilise President Buhari, Nigeria’s democracy

0

The Coalition for Nigeria Movement (CNM) says it has uncovered an evil plot by the opposition and other desperate elements to destabilise the administration of President Buhari with the aid of the National Assembly.

Speaking at a press conference on Thursday in Abuja, CNM’s convener, Sabo Odeh, said these “agents of darkness” have finalised three mutineering strategies to dislodge President Buhari.

According to Odeh, the first is to “raise motions on the floor of the hallowed chambers that the administration of President Muhammadu Buhari has failed Nigerians in the area of security”.

CNM’s convener added that the legislators would then “make bogus claims that appointees of the president are corrupt to taint his anti-corruption crusade in fulfilment of the desires of their sponsors who among other are out to discredit the president”.

Odeh further disclosed that the final phase is a public instigation of youths across the country against the government citing untold hardship and insensitivity towards their plight as the reason.

The Coalition for Nigeria Movement, however, charged fellow patroits and all relevant security agencies to rise in defence of the country at this critical period.

It warned the NASS and its allies to retrace their steps and respect the people’s mandate given to President Buhari in 2019.

The coalition also advised Nigerians to learn from the Mali experience as those calling for mutiny in the military do not and will never mean well for democracy.

“The recent events in the country indeed call for concern from all stakeholders with regards to the activities of some individuals and groups that have been involved in acts that are capable of undermining the territorial integrity of Nigeria,” Sabo said.

“The Coalition for Nigeria Movement is in receipt of this nefarious plot by the agents of destabilization that are hell-bent on seeing to the disintegration of Nigeria at all cost and not minding whose ox is gored.

“This indeed calls for concern from all stakeholders in Nigeria towards addressing this significant threat against our nascent democracy. It, therefore, behoves on all Nigerians to rise in defence of the country by ensuring that the plot to disintegrate Nigeria fails.

“The Coalition for Nigeria Movement wishes to call on the Nigerian Police Force to begin a 24 hours surveillance across the country to monitor strange and natural movements of members of the National Assembly who have proven with their actions in recent times that they do not have the interest of the country at heart.

“The Coalition for Nigeria Movement as a critical stakeholder in democratic governance in the country is advising those individuals and organizations that have plotted evil against Nigeria to retrace their steps.

“It is, therefore, inexcusable to hide under whatever nomenclature to destabilize the country. The members of the National Assembly must be reminded that they are representatives of the people and not representatives of a select few.

“The Coalition for Nigeria Movement wishes to state in unequivocal terms that indeed Nigerians would be watching closely as events unfold upon resumption from recess by the National Assembly, and Nigerians would also resist any attempt to truncate our nascent democracy.”

Insecurity: Citizens of Adamawa, Yobe, others hold ‘Thank You Rally’ to President Buhari over return of peace

0

No fewer than 5,000 Nigerians from five states in the northeast, on Thursday, held a ‘Thank You Rally’ to the Aso Villa in appreciation of President Muhammadu Buhari over return of peace to their states.

They comprised of natives of Adamawa, Bauchi, Gombe, Taraba and Yobe States, who were once under the shackles of Boko Haram terrorists.

In his address, Coordinator, Adamu Kabir said by restoring normalcy to these five states, the president has kept his promise to the people of the region who showed so much confidence in him.

Adamu, on behalf of the Concerned Citizens of Adamawa, Bauchi, Gombe, Taraba and Yobe States admitted that the era of multiple bombings, terror and bloodshed is now in the past.

“We here today represent the elders, non-partisan and socio-cultural organizations, women and children  from the states which have been fully liberated from the claws of terrorism,” he said.

“This delegation of 5,000 men and women and great citizen of this country is our humble show of appreciation to your efforts, MR. President Sir. This has been made possible by your unwavering commitment and resolve to bequeath us a country that we all craves for.

“Mr president we are indeed very grateful for keeping to your promise of restoring peace and security to the North-East region. You assured that you will deal with the Boko Haram menace and true to your words you have done just that. You are indeed ‘Mai Gaskiya’.

“Our solidarity here today is informed by the need to thank you and to equally ask for more as peace has continued to return to our various states. We appreciate that you are making a lot of effort to equip the military and other security agencies. We appreciate your effort in setting up the North East Development Commission (NEDC), a great intervention that has helped greatly in restoring peace through development. Our people no doubt have not had it this good in a very very long while.”

The group also praised the governors of these five states for supporting the president and the Nigerian Army, ensuring lasting peace returns to their domains.

Adamu’s words, “In all of these we are not unmindful of the impact of the cooperation of our various state Governors with your government in other to achieve this peace. We commend our various governors for their cooperation and smooth working with the Federal Government plue cooperation with the army and other security agencies.

“This cooperation is a major pillar in the task to restore normalcy to the north east. This symbiotic relationship across the northeast is a major reason for the elimination of Boko Haram in our states. It has always been clear to us, that to win the war against the terrorist our unity as a people and cooperation with the FG and our great military is very important.”

The citizens, however, appealed to President Buhari to continue his rebuilding and rehabilitation efforts in these states, providing the necessary funding for the troops and NEDC.

“We appreciate you today Mr. President and want to ask that you do not relent in your effort at providing more funding to the NEDC and security agencies working to tackle security in the North East. We ask that you continue to use your great office to rally the leaders and people of the North-East together to be united in their fight against terrorism.

“Mr President, once again we say we are very grateful for all your efforts that are now yielding good results in our various states. This is priceless to a lot of us here, considering where we were only a few years ago.”

Political conspiracies, sabotage responsible for existence of Boko Haram in Borno – SHAC

0

The Save Humanity Advocacy Centre (SHAC) has attributed the lingering activities of Boko Haram terrorists in Borno State to conspiracies and sabotage by the state’s political actors.

SHAC also decried the

lack of cooperation by the state government as well as politically motivated hostilities against the Nigerian military.

The centre made these revelations in a report signed by its Special Rapporteur, Dr. Okey Okechukwu and unveiled on Wednesday for distribution to the Office of the President, his Chief of Staff, state governors and the general public.

” There has been a politically motivated hostility towards the Nigerian troops in parts of Borno State, especially in areas where the government wields enormous political interest. This fact as unhealthy as it sounds has also pitched personnel of the military against some ethnic groups that are probably ignorant of the efforts of the Nigerian Military towards the restoration of peace and order in their communities,” the report revealed.

” It was also observed that the Nigerian Military is experiencing some level of sabotage in their operations with those that are supposed to keep the Nigerian troops informed of the presence of strange faces in their domains, instead prefer to relate such information to the local administrators. They, in turn, convey such to the state capital in Maiduguri and the time lag gives the invaders the latitude to wreak havoc on innocent people.

“The Save Humanity Advocacy Centre, as a result of its study of the events in North-East Nigeria, concludes that political conspiracies and sabotage are responsible for the existence of Boko Haram in Borno State”.

The centre said in the course of the research, it discovered that five out of six states have been freed from Boko Haram, with normalcy restored.

This, according to the report,  buttresses the position canvassed in some quarters that the activities of the Boko Haram group have been successfully curtailed barring pockets of attacks in Borno.

As part of its recommendations, the centre, however, advised the government and people of Borno to take a cue from other states by extending support to the security agencies.

It also tasked the government to engage various community and religious leaders to sensitize the youths in the state on the demerits of associating with the Boko Haram group.
