Former Army spokesperson, S.K. Usman, 137 others inducted by IOARM

 

 

A former Director of Army Public Relations, Brig.-Gen. S.K. Usman (rtd) has been inducted as a ‘Distinguished Fellow’ by the Institute of Organisational and Administrative Risk Management (IOARM) of Nigeria. 

Usman was among 138 persons inducted into IOARM’s various categories of membership on Saturday at the General ML Agwai Block of the Nigerian Army Resource Centre (NARC), Abuja.

IOARM is a professional training, consultancy, research and leadership institution approved and licensed by the Federal Ministry of Education, guaranteed by the Federal Ministry of Justice and incorporated by the Corporate Affairs Commission of Nigeria.

A breakdown shows that the following were inducted into the institute : 9 Distinguished Fellows, 51 Fellows, 11 Senior Members, 36 Full Members, 23 Associate Members, 6 Graduate Members and 2 Student Members.

In his address, chairman of the event, Professor Babatunde Rabiu, who is the Director and Chief Executive of the Centre for Atmospheric Research of the National Space Research and Development Agency of Nigeria (CAR-NASRDA), and Chairman of the Governing Council of IOARM charged the inductees to bear the torch of the institute and give light to their immediate environment and workplaces. 

“I believe that every one of us present here today, including our fellows, shall take advantage of this event to learn new ways of managing all forms of risk in our workplaces, homes and businesses; initiate networking opportunities with new partners here present today, and imbibe some formidable skills capable of advancing personal administrative prowess,” he said.

“I congratulate our new inductees and urge them to go and be a true reflection of the ideals of this Institute. Mind you, as from today, ‘by your fruits shall people linked you with us’ I thus urge you to live your lives in the consciousness of the emblem of the Institute you are bearing as from today. Today, you shall become our brand ambassadors and should so live”.

The occasion featured two induction lectures on Introduction to risk management and Application of risk management methods in the emerging world presented by Professor (Mrs) Oluwabunmi Olaitan Agarry, a renowned resource person in the area of Risk Management Methods, as well as oath-taking for members presided over by Barrister Akomolafe Bankole Joel, the principal partner of Bank-Akomolafe & Co, Mount Zion Chambers, Abuja.

The high point of the ceremony was the conferment of the various membership status on the new members.

Beside the former Army spokesperson, others inducted as ‘Distinguished Fellows’ include Senator Ibrahim Hassan Hadeija; Major General Jide Jeelel Ogunlade, Executive Director Consult at the Nigerian Army Resource Centre; Brigadier General Sani Kukasheka Usman (rtd), Elder Ade Alemi and Adeyemi Ademola Edward, amongst others.

UK’s terror threat level rises to ‘severe’ after attacks in Austria and France

UK’s national terrorism threat level has been raised to “severe” following the murderous attacks by Islamist militants in France and Austria.

The Joint Terrorism Analysis Centre (JTAC) made the assessment following a spate of attacks in France and a shooting rampage by an Isis supporter in Vienna.

Priti Patel, the home secretary, said: “This is a precautionary measure and is not based on any specific threat.

“The public should continue to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity to the police.”

Isis, al-Qaeda and other jihadist groups have been ramping up calls for supporters to launch atrocities around the world in recent days.

The terror threat level was lowered to substantial a year ago, just weeks before an Islamist extremist murdered two people at a rehabilitation event in London.

It was followed by three other alleged terror attacks this year in HMP Whitemoor prison, Streatham and Reading.

Lagos may experience second wave of Covid-19 – Commissioner

The Lagos State Government on Tuesday advised citizens to strictly adhere to precautionary measures against COVID-19 infection to prevent a recurrence of the lockdown of the economy.

 

Prof. Akin Abayomi, the State Commissioner for Health, said that resurgence of cases in Lagos might lead to reversal of strategical measures put in place by the state government to open up the economy.

 

Abayomi warned that continuous flagrant disregard of safety guidelines by citizens portends danger and might lead to a second wave of new infections in Lagos.

 

He also advised the citizens against unnecessary movement and social gatherings, saying that travelling into and outside the country should be discouraged, except if absolutely necessary.

 

Abayomi said that many countries and cities were experiencing a second and third wave of the COVID-19 pandemic, with a resultant spike in the number of cases and fatalities.

 

The commissioner said many of the affected countries around the world have found it necessary to impose a second lockdown and restriction of movements, which have significant socioeconomic and security consequences.

 

“The first wave of Coronavirus started in December 2019 and swept through an unprepared world.

 

“The first case of COVID-19 in Nigeria was recorded in Lagos on Feb. 27. Lagos has since become the epicentre of the outbreak in Nigeria with a record of 21,107 confirmed cases and 212 deaths from the virus till date.

 

“The containment measures put in place at the time included COVID-19 testing, isolation and treatment, surveillance, total shutdown of the state for about 12 weeks and partial shutdown of social, economic and academic activities for over four months,” Abayomi said.

 

The commissioner expressed concern that the use of face masks, social distancing and hand hygiene had reduced among citizens.

 

He called for the reinforcement of the adoption and adherence of various preventive measures put in place by the state government to tackle the disease.

 

“The erroneous belief that COVID-19 has been conquered and is no more in Nigeria should be discarded.

 

“Based on our data, this assumption is invalid.

 

“It creates a false sense of security among the citizens, causing many to abandon the use of face masks and other safety measures and protocols put in place by the government,” he said.

 

According to him, though, the state has reached its peak as predicted, and a decline in the number of positive cases, citizens should not conclude that it is over.

 

“COVID-19 is still very much with us as evidenced in the number of cases being recorded in the community daily and occasional deaths from severe complications.

 

“This is the more reason why citizens should not relent in this regard if we don’t want to experience a second wave of the disease,” he said.

 

Abayomi said that the increased COVID-19 testing capacity of the state had been impactful in reducing community transmission.

 

According to him, any citizen who falls within the case definition of COVID-19 infection should visit any of the dedicated sample collection sites in their local government or public laboratories to get the test done free of charge.

Nigeria approved US special forces’ rescue operation,  Defence Minister says

Minister of Defence, Major General Bashir Magashi (rtd),  says the Federal Government gave its approval  for the hostage rescue operation carried out by the United States of America Special Force at the weekend.

According to Magashi, the operation was not a violation of Nigeria’s sovereignty.

He spoke while responding to questions from reporters after defending the Ministry of Defence 2021 Budget estimates before the Senate Committee on Defence, in Abuja.

The Minister said that FG granted the USA permission to operate in the country being a “friendly country.”

Responding to questions on the need for the Nigerian military to deploy sophomore technology in the fight against insecurity; Magashi said Nigeria is handicapped at the moment by some “so-called developed countries who want the country to remain the way it is and keep running to them for help.

He however said the country was doing the best it can with what is available to the military.

The Minister further said that Nigeria will explore the current partnership with the United States to tackle insurgency in the country.

Magashi said: “The United States of America contacted the Nigerian government to undertake that operation.

“There is nothing wrong with a friendly nation taking permission to conduct an operation which is for the mutual good of the countries. That is why we allowed it to happen.”

Asked how far Nigeria has been able to exploit the friendliness between both countries to fight insurgency, the Minister said: “It is something that can be discussed later.

“It is not meant for the consumption of the public. To be honest but certainly we are making efforts and they have been helping us greatly in areas where we have difficulties and we are still asking for more.”

On comments that some countries were trying to block Nigeria from owning some technologies to fight insurgency, the Minister said: “It is natural. They want to sell their equipment so they will try to make it difficult for developing countries to have what they want.”

Hoodlums likely behind Lekki shooting —AGF Malami

The Attorney-General of the Federation (AGF) and Minister of Justice has insinuated that hoodlums and not soldiers shot unarmed and peaceful #EndSARS protesters at Lekki tollgate in Lagos State on October 20.

He stated, that it would be “pre-emptive” to conclude there was even shooting at Lekki tollgate, adding that soldiers seen at the place could likely be soldiers wearing army uniform.

Malami stated this when he spoke with newsmen in Abuja on Monday.

Malami said, “You cannot rule out the possibility of perhaps hoodlums that set in to create a scene… could equally partake in the process.”

He added that investigation to unravel what truly happened was underway.

Malami’s claim is coming despite Nigeria Army’s acceptance that it deployed soldiers at Lekki tollgate on the request of Lagos State government.

The army, however, denied that the soldiers did not shoot the protesters.

Meanwhile, video and photo evidence from the Lekki tollgate incident showed that several people were injured while a yet to be established number of protesters are said to have died as a result of shooting by the men in army uniform.

Currently, a judicial panel set up by Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu set up to probe the activities of the disbanded Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS) of the police unit, is also working to ascertain what really happened at Lekki tollgate on October 20, 2020.

An Auustralian comedy group, The Chaser, on Tuesday posed as Donald Trump.

The satirical group changed its name and image on Twitter to mirror Trump’s account before tweeting: “Don’t vote for me, I’m a massive idiot.” Its bio read: “Not the 45th President of the United States of America, just some very naughty boys.”

The post attracted thousands of likes and shares before being deleted from the website, although screenshots continued to circulate across the platform today.

“Well, we had a good run,” the Chaser team wrote on Facebook about the moderation decision. The post likely violated the social network’s impersonation policy that stops users creating accounts that could potentially dupe other users.

Twitter’s rules state: “accounts that pose as another person, brand, or organization in a confusing or deceptive manner may be permanently suspended.”

While the rules say users are allowed to have parody or fan accounts, portraying another profile “in a misleading or deceptive manner” is deemed to be against policy.

“We understand why Twitter would do this,” The Chaser’s website editor Cam Smith said in a statement to The Shot, a news website created by the comedy group.

“After all, it would not be out of the ordinary for Trump to tweet something so outlandish. If anything this would have been one of his more reasonable tweets, so we could see how people might get mixed up,” Smith continued.

“It’s impressive that Twitter only took 20 minutes to unverify our tweet—given it took them almost four years to start fact checking the actual President.

“I guess that’s to be expected though, we all know comedians words are much more dangerous than those of the guy who controls 50 percent of the world’s nukes.”

Lekki toll gate cameras stopped working by 8pm – LCC

 

The Lekki Concession Company (LCC) says the surveillance camera at the toll gate stopped working at 8pm on Tuesday, October 20.

LCC MD, Abayomi Omomuwa, made this known  on Tuesday when he appeared before the Judicial Panel of Inquiry investigating police brutality and high handedness.

Omomuwa, who submitted footage from the day, also confirmed the cameras that were removed before the shooting were plate number recognition cameras “early in the day”.

According to him, the other surveillance camera, a pan–tilt–zoom camera (PTZ camera) also exists and is still intact.

“We never, ever tampered with the surveillance camera until about 8pm, when it was tampered with and stopped recording,” Omomuwa added.

The LCC MD also disclosed they have three surveillance cameras: at the Lekki toll gate, one at Ikoyi and another at Chevron. The cameras are linked via network, controlled from Chevron.

Omomuwa noted they did not activate audio recording, as the cameras are used for traffic not security.

Founder of the Synagogue of all Nations, Prophet TB Joshua has predicted that there will be a new President in America as the US go into its presidential election on Tuesday.

Joshua shared the ‘prophetic revelation’ regarding the contentious elections scheduled for today, November 3, 2020.

Republican incumbent President Donald Trump and Democratic former Vice President Joe Biden are locked in a close contest.

Joshua suggested that Trump had destroyed his opportunities to return to power with his mouth, adding that Christians would love him to win a second term but that God has another plan.

The cleric said he will reserve what he is seeing “Until the new President is inaugurated.”

“What is happening in the American election is as a result of the power in the tongue,” Joshua stated in his message posted on Facebook.

“The word we speak determines the life we enjoy. The tongue can either work for us or against us – death and life lie in the tongue.

“We Christians would have loved it [the election] to go the way we wanted. But the Bible says it is never proper to base our faith on our improvement after prayer.”

The prophet said, however, that believers “should not worry” but rather derive joy “that the new [US] Supreme Court Judge, Amy Coney Barrett, will be an instrument of check.”

“There is likely going to be pockets of resistance here and there but nothing will change.

“Let me reserve what I am seeing until the inauguration of the new president,” he concluded.

Austria declares three days of national mourning over Vienna attack

 

The Austrian government has declared three days of mourning following a terrorist attack that left four victims and a suspect dead.

 

“Our thoughts and our compassion are with the victims, the injured and their families in these very difficult hours for the Republic of Austria,” Chancellor Sebastian Kurz said before a cabinet meeting.

 

The mourning will last until Thursday, the government decided.

 

People have been killed and 15 seriously injured in multiple shootings in the Austrian capital on Monday evening, according to local police.

 

The attack had an Islamist motive, the Vienna Police wrote on Twitter on Tuesday morning.

 

There is at least one perpetrator, who was shot by police, it said, noting that an explosive device worn by the perpetrator turned out to be a dummy.

 

The police have searched the house of the perpetrator and are evaluating video recordings related to the attack.
