#EndSARS: El-Rufai ‘sad’ over destruction in Lagos, pledges support

0

Kaduna State Governor, Malam Nasir el-Rufai, on Thursday, said he is saddened by the gravity of the destruction witnessed in Lagos, following the hijack of peaceful #EndSARS protests by hoodlums.

Accodding to the governor, the mayhem was “pure evil,” adding that he nearly shed tears as he flipped through the images of the affected torched public and privately- owned assets.

El-Rufai shared the thoughts when he visited the State House, Marina to commiserate with his Lagos State counterpart over the sad incidence, lamenting that Lagos, which accounted for one-third of National Gross Domestic Product (GDP), did not deserve to suffer such pain.

He, however, assured that Kaduna was ready to offer whatever support to ensure Lagos was back on track.

“I have spent time to see some of the pictures of the destruction done on public properties in Lagos and I nearly shed tears. Anyone who cares about development and progress will cry after seeing what has been done to public facilities and people’s investment that provided jobs to youths,” El-Rufai said.

“While expressing anger on police brutality may be right, but destroying public properties, which will have to be rebuilt using money that is needed to invest in other public infrastructure, under the guise of protest is nothing but self-destruction. The government of Lagos and the Federal Government will have to re-invest scarce resources that could have been used for other things to rebuild the vandalised facilities.

“As a colleague, I can confirm that the governor of Lagos did all that could be done to ensure that this destruction does not take place. It is very sad to see what had happened in Lagos. I want to assure you that we will support you getting Lagos back on track. We will give whatever support Lagos needs from us to get back better”.

The Kaduna governor, while acknowledging that the youth protest against the police was not out of order, posited that it was wrong for the protesters to call for disbandment of the entire police force because of the action of a few bad eggs within the system.

Senate raises alarm over cost of Buhari’s foreign medical trips

0

The Senate, on Thursday, sounded an alarm over President Muhammadu Buhari’s medical trips outside Nigeria.

The upper chamber said the situation in which even the medical facility located in the Presidential Villa had been abandoned by the Presidency because of the preference for treatment in foreign countries is completely unacceptable.

The Senate said the foreign trips for medical treatment must be stopped to ensure that proper attention was accorded to the State House Clinic.

The position of the Senate was made known at a budget defence session between the Senate Committee on Federal Character and Intergovernmental Affairs with the State House Permanent Secretary, Tijani Umar.

Umar had presented a budget of N19.7 billion for 2021, out of which N1.3bn was proposed for the State House Clinic.

Reacting to the proposal, the Chairman of the Senate panel, Senator Danjuma La’ah, said the committee would approve the budget for the State House Clinic but insisted that the president and other top officials of his government should no longer be flown abroad for medical treatment.

The committee made it clear that “the president cannot be travelling or be taken out of the country anytime he falls sick.

“He must be attended to in our hospitals here in Nigeria. We must ensure our hospital are fully equipped to world-class standards so that no matter the issue of emergency, our hospitals should be endowed with that capacity to attend to them before flying out of the need arises.”

Kosovo President Hashim Thaci, a leader during Kosovo’s war for independence, has resigned in order to face charges on war crimes and crimes against humanity at a special court based in The Hague.

Thaci announced his resignation at a news conference on Thursday.

He said he was taking the step “to protect the integrity of the presidency of Kosovo.”

He announced his immediate resignation after his closest ally and the head of his Democratic Party, Kadri Veseli, also said that he has been indicted and would travel to The Hague for the trial that he was stepping down “now”.

According to a draft indictment revealed in June, Thaci, Veseli and others committed “nearly 100 murders” and other atrocities against “hundreds of known victims of Kosovo Albanian, Serb, Roma, and other ethnicities” and including political opponents.

U.S. Election: Iran’s supreme leader mocks Trump

0

IRAN’s supreme leader has mocked the rancorous aftermath of election day in the United States, saying that the vote has exposed the reality of US democracy.

Well over 24 hours after the last polling stations closed in the US state of Alaska, the battle for the White House remains undecided.

US President Donald Trump has caused disquiet among even leaders of his own Republican Party by flatly alleging fraud, while his Democratic challenger Joe Biden’s campaign team has accused the incumbent of seeking to deny the electoral rights of tens of thousands of postal voters.

“What a spectacle!” supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei tweeted late Wednesday.

“One says this is the most fraudulent election in US history. Who says that? The president who is currently in office.
“His rival says Trump intends to rig the election! This is how #USElections & US democracy are.”

The deepening polarisation of US politics since Trump’s surprise election victory four years ago has drawn expressions of concern even from Western allies, with Germany warning of a “very explosive situation” in the aftermath of the poll.

Despite US allegations that Tehran sought to use social media to influence voters in the run-up to polling day, Iran’s leadership has publicly insisted it favours neither candidate, despite their sharply divergent policies towards Tehran.

Trump has led a campaign of “maximum pressure” against the Islamic republic, pulling Washington out of a multilateral deal on Iran’s nuclear programme and reimposing crippling unilateral sanctions.

Biden has signalled he is ready to rejoin the landmark nuclear agreement struck in 2015 when he served as vice president under Trump’s predecessor Barack Obama.

But on Tuesday, Khamenei insisted the outcome of the election would have no impact on Iranian policy.

Angels From Africa Coming’, Trump’s Spiritual Adviser Prays For Election Victory

President Donald Trump’s spiritual adviser, televangelist Paula White-Cain, on Wednesday prayed for “angels” to help the former reality TV star in the US Election 2020, causing the Internet to erupt in laughter and fetching some sassy comments.

Paula White, who has been associated with Donald Trump ever since he entered the White House back in 2016, was brutally trolled for claiming that “angels are being dispatched” to help the Republican president win.

Fetching some hilarious reactions on the Internet, the video shows White telling viewers that “angelic reinforcement” has been summoned from Africa and South America. “The angels are coming here in the name of Jesus from Africa,” she said, in a sing-song, evangelical tone.

Using Trump’s claim of US Election 2020 theft from yesterday, Paula White said she was fighting what she called were the “demonic confederacies” from attempting to steal the polls.

“We are up BIG, but they are trying to STEAL the election. We will never let them do it,” Trump had said Wednesday in a tweet that Twitter quickly flagged as “disputed” and “misleading”.

Making animated movements as she spoke, she said: “I hear a sound of victory. The Lord says it is done. For I hear, victory, victory, victory!”

Paula White then turned up ‘weirdness’ metre, claiming that angels had “been dispatched from Africa right now”.

“They’re coming here, in the name of Jesus,” she asserted.

Re-elected Magufuli sworn in as Tanzanian president

President John Pombe Magufuli was sworn in Thursday to lead Tanzania for another five-year term, pledging to work hard to implement the promises he made during the election campaign.

The swearing-in ceremony, at the Jamhuri Stadium in the capital, Dodoma, was witnessed by several foreign dignitaries, including President Yoweri Museveni of neighbouring Uganda, President Emmerson Mnangagwa of Zimbabwe, and President Azali Assoumani of Comoros.

In his speech, President Magufuli appealed to all Tanzanians to join him in his efforts to bring prosperity to the nation, now that the election is over.

“The election is over… The major task ahead of us now is to carry on with efforts to build our nation,” said Mr Magufuli, who was sworn in along with Vice-President Samia Suluhu Hassan.

He appealed to his compatriots to come together as they are all winners of the election. “This is not CCM’s (ruling party) victory, it’s the triumph of all Tanzanians,” he said.

During the election campaign, President Magufuli and his CCM party pledged, among other things, to create jobs, increase employment, improve workers’ welfare and accomplish mega infrastructure projects to set the basis for improvement of the economy.

Tanzania held its general election on 28 October and President Magufuli was re-elected for his second, five-year term with 84.4 per cent of the vote, ahead of his closest challenger, Tundu Lissu of opposition Chadema party, who was credited with 13 per cent

Sahel Sanity: Repentant bandits surrender in Katsina

0

As ground troops of Operation Sahel Sanity with close air support intensify effort to decimate bandits in North West region, two notorious leaders of bandits from Safana LGA of Katsina State has repented and surrendered to the State Police Command.

Sale Turwa and Muhammed Sani Maidaji said they have had a change of heart, pledging not to engage in any form of criminality anymore.

The pair surrendered 10 AK47 rifles to Governor Aminu Masari  during a meeting with heads of security agencies.

The repentant bandits were presented to Masari by the state Commissioner of Police Sanusi Buba and his counterparts from the 17 Brigade, Katsina, Department of State Security and the Civil Defense Corps

Buba earlier told Governor Masari that it was the view of security chiefs in the state that he accept the bandits’ remorse and forgive them in order to encourage other bandits to follow suit.

While describing the development as a very significant milestone in the fight against banditry and other criminalities, Governor Masari urged the security operatives not to relent in their efforts.

He said “I’ve instructed the security operatives to deal ruthlessly with the bandits until they are rendered permanently ineffective.

“We are no more going to negotiate with them, but if on their volition they decide to renounce their violent criminal ways and embrace peace, we are ready to listen to them’’.

“Even then, they must surrender all the arms and ammunition in their possession, otherwise they remain enemies to be dealt with accordingly, as far as we are concerned.”
