FG petitions CNN over report on Lekki shootings

0

THE Federal Government has formally petitioned CNN over the airing of its investigative report on the Lekki toll gate shooting of EndSARS protesters titled ‘How a Bloody Night of Bullets Quashed a Young Protest Movement.’

The report was aired on November 18, 2020.
Minister of Information Alhaji Lai Mohammed, in a letter, addressed to the CNN Vice President on Communications, Mr. Jonathan Hawkins, on November 23, 2020, described the report as blatantly irresponsible and a poor piece of journalistic work by a reputable international news organisation.

He also protested that the report did not just fall short of journalistic standards, but reinforced the disinformation being peddled around on the issue.

Mohammed described as inexcusable and indefensible CNN’s failure to live up to the principles of journalism on balance and fairness by rushing to air the story without presenting the government’s side.

The federal government also cited another breach by the Atlanta, Georgia-based network in its investigation by relying on unverified footage which it sourced from social media while it had no reporter on the ground at the Lekki toll gate gate on the night of the incident.

“In airing its ‘investigative’ report, CNN conveniently forgot that on October 23, 2020, it emphatically tweeted, from its verified Twitter handle, that the military killed 38 people when it opened fire on peaceful protesters on Tuesday, October 20, 2020.

“Almost a month later, the same CNN – after a supposedly exhaustive investigation – is now reporting only one death from what the world was made to believe was a massacre. Is CNN not embarrassed by this sharp climb down? Has CNN owned up to this and apologised for its faux pas?

“It is also interesting that while CNN obtained footage showing when the vehicles carrying soldiers left their barracks and arrived at the Lekki Toll Gate, it could not obtain any footage showing the bodies of those supposedly killed in the ‘massacre’.
After all, forensic ballistic experts will most likely testify that firing military-grade weapons into a crowd will not leave anyone needing a microscope to look for blood or bodies at the scene,” Mohammed said.

The Federal Government subsequently demanded an immediate retraction from CNN asking for an exhaustive investigation into its ‘investigative’ report on the Lekki toll gate incident to determine, among others, its authenticity and if it met the basic standards of journalism in addition to the selective use of unverified social media videos to manipulate public opinion.

THE Nigeria Centre for Disease Control has said a total of 138 members of the National Youth Service Corps have tested positive for Covid-19.

The NDDC Director-General, Chikwe Ihekweazu, disclosed this today in Abuja, while briefing the presidential task force on Covid-19.

He, however, said the safe reopening of the NYSC orientation camps across the country was successful.

He stated that none of those who tested positive was allowed into the camps.

According to him, “a total of 34,785 corps members and members of the camp communities have been tested so far in the last weeks of which only 138 was found positive, which is 0.4 per cent prevalence and 1 in 200 people.”

Ihekweazu said those who tested positive were either managed at home or in a treatment centre depending on if they had symptoms and what state they were in.

The DG said the next challenge would be how to work with education stakeholders to ensure safe reopening of the universities.

“Universities have proven to be slightly risky; it has its unique challenges but we are confident that we can address this as we have done in other sectors like aviation,” Ihekweazu stated.

Three warrants of arrest for different rape cases have been issued for self-proclaimed prophet Shepherd Bushiri, who fled South Africa earlier this month.

TheNigerian can confirm that the three warrants were issued on 19 November by the Pretoria Magistrate’s Court.

The warrants relate to two different cases allegedly registered in 2018, and a third rape case registered in 2020.

TheNigerian previously reported that the Enlightened Christian Gathering (ECG) leader denied the rape allegations levelled against him, stating that the Hawks were “intimidating women” to lay false charges against him.

Bushiri’s comments followed an eTV interview with two women who claimed that they were raped by the him.

It has not yet been determined if these cases are linked to the two women that were interviewed.

A warrant of arrest related to this case was authorised by the Pretoria Magistrate’s Court after it was revealed that Bushiri had returned to his country of birth – Malawi.

COVID-19: Fans allowed to return to EPL stadiums from December

0
English Premier League clubs will be allowed to start admitting fans into their stadiums from December.
British Prime Minister Boris Johnson announced on Monday that supporters will be permitted to attend events in top level grounds in England when the national lockdown ends on 2 December 2.
All sporting activities in the United Kingdom are currently held behind closed doors to prevent the spread of COVID-19,  which has ravaged the world since the beginning of the year.
Sporting events were initially cancelled in March amid the pandemic but there has been a return since June, although strict preventive protocols have to be observed, including allowing in only the players, officials and media.
The British government recently ordered another lockdown as a second wave of the virus battered the country and the authorities fought to keep it under control.
The second lockdown will end on 2 December and that is when fans will be able to attend matches.
The stadiums will operate at much reduced capacities; some cannot have more than 2,000 fans at one game.
Clubs have been severely hit in the pocket with the no-spectators rule, and they will be relieved they can start making some matchday revenue.
The Prime Minister also stated that stadiums in areas that fall within Tiers 1 and 2 (low and medium risk areas) will be allowed to admit a limited number of fans after the lockdown.
However, match venues in  the high-risk Tier 3 areas will continue to host games behind closed doors.

COVID-19 responsible for Nigeria’s recession – Buhari

0

As Nigeria slips into recession for the second time in five years, President Muhammadu Buhari, says it came about because of the severity of the global economic downturn caused by the COVID-19 pandemic.

He said this on Monday in Abuja, while declaring open the 26th Nigerian Economic Summit with the theme: “Building Partnerships for Resilience’’.

The summit was organised jointly by the Nigerian Economic Summit Group (NESG) and the Ministry of Finance, Budget and National Planning.

Mr Buhari, who was represented by Vice-President Yemi Osinbajo, said that the decline in the nation’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP) came after 12 successive quarters of positive growth.

He said the downturn caused by the pandemic included lockdowns, disruption in global supply chains, business failures and rising unemployment.

“We can all recall that during the lockdown, farming did not take place, businesses were closed; schools were closed as were hotels and restaurants.

“Also, airlines stopped flying, while inter-state commerce was disrupted.

“The economy only began to recover when these activities resumed and if we are able to sustain the nearly three percentage point increase from the second quarter decline of minus 6.1 per cent, the performance in the fourth quarter could take us into positive territory,’’ he said.

Mr Buhari said that it was to mitigate such impact that the federal government introduced the Economic Sustainability Plan (ESP).

According to him, all the programmes in the ESP are reliant on the private sector playing a key role in creating and conserving jobs and the production and delivery of services in agriculture, housing, solar power and digital technologies.

He added that the speedy pathway out of the current recession was to quicken the implementation of the ESP.

“Of course, an improvement in global economic conditions, including the restoration of global supply chains and resumption of exports and remittances, should enable a V-shaped recovery.

“We expect, in the same spirit of partnership, that the private sector will complement these efforts by making maximum use of the provisions of the ESP and the Finance Bill when it is passed by the National Assembly and also by retaining and creating jobs so as to keep people at work.

“In a similar spirit of partnership, private sector enterprises should also pay their due taxes,’’ he added.

Speaking on the theme of the summit, he said that partnerships remained essential to attract the resources for building a solid national infrastructural base.

Mr Buhari said that as was evident when the nation was combatting COVID-19, partnerships were essential and also necessary for framing medium and long-term development plans.

He added that the government had always emphasised that the private sector had a key role to play in the efforts to build a more resilient and competitive economy as expressed in the Economic Recovery and Growth Plan.

Mr Buhari said that private companies in design, construction, logistics and finance were very much engaged in the nation’s infrastructure projects in power and rail as well as road and bridges.

“I am pleased to inform in this regard that we are working actively with the CBN, the Nigerian Sovereign Investment Authority and state governments under the auspices of the National Economic Council to design and put in place a N15 billion Infraco Fund, which will be independently managed.

“The Infraco Fund will help to close the national infrastructural gap and provide a firm basis for increasing national economic productivity and growth,” he said.

The Minister of Finance, Zainab Ahmed, said that the current recession would be a short one, as the government and key stakeholders were proactively working together to put in place sustainable measures to curtail and improve the situation.

She added that in spite of the recession, Nigeria had out-performed many economies in terms of economic growth.

Mrs Ahmed said that the federal government, in partnership with the NESG had been working together on the national implementation plans as well as the regional and local development plans.

“Since the inception of the NESG 25 years ago, it has become one of the largest annual gatherings dedicated to finding solutions to the challenges facing the Nigerian Economy.

“It has helped to shape government policies, reforms and sector transformations,’’ she said.

Asue Ighodalo, the Chairman of the NESG, said the summit must be different as it must emphasise the execution of endless dialogues.

He said that the summit was about building partnerships as sectors could no longer succeed independently.

“We come to the table each year with clear and defined obstacles in search of solutions. The NESG and the private sector must do more to address policy needs.

“Let this 26th summit be the one where we collectively resolve to shun greed, nepotism and corruption.

“It is time that we are brave with facing our realities with strength, sense of purpose, and integrity.

“Our reflections would be incomplete if we did not also examine many more policy recommendations that have not been acted upon over the years and acknowledge those that have been actioned,’’ he said.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the two-day summit ends on Tuesday.

Trump raises funds for inauguration despite Biden’s victory

0

Despite being on the cusp of exit from the White House, U.S. President, Donald Trump has launched a fundraiser towards a potential inauguration.

Trump, the Republican incumbent has refused to admit defeat to Democrat President-Elect, Joe Biden.

And the president is going ahead with his plans beyond 2020, calling for donations expected to help cover the costs associated with his unlikely inauguration for a second term.

“All donations of $50 or more will include two tickets to President Trump’s inauguration in the historic Rose Garden,” a statement on Trump’s campaign website read.

“Trump Make America Great Again Committee (TMAGAC) is a joint fundraising committee composed of participating committees Donald J. Trump for President, Inc. (DJTP), Save America, and the Republican National Committee (RNC).

“Contributions to TMAGAC or any member committee are not deductible for federal income tax purposes. Contributions to TMAGAC are subject to federal contribution limits and source prohibitions. Federal law requires us to collect and report the name, mailing address, occupation, and employer of each contributor whose contributions aggregate in excess of $200 in a calendar year (RNC, Save America) or election cycle (DJTP)”.

Trump’s inaugural committee raised the most of any newly elected president in 2016: a whopping $107 million.

For comparison, President Barack Obama’s inaugural committee raised $53 million.

Meanwhile, Biden’s team is appealing to its high-dollar donors to help raise millions of dollars more for his presidential transition, amid concerns the Trump administration will continue to block public funding.

The General Services Administration must “ascertain” that Biden won the election before the federal government will release roughly $10 million in funds to which the transition is legally entitled.

So far, the transition has raised more than $8 million, according to three people familiar with the total, hitting their initial $7 million to $10 million goal. Now they’re upping it by “several millions of dollars in anticipation of GSA not relenting before the inauguration,” said one person familiar with the transition efforts.

The funding is expected to help cover the costs associated with the bureaucratic handover, including the hundreds of aides who have already been hired to staff the transition and its agency review teams, who are a mix of paid staffers and volunteers.

A half-dozen Democratic donors, bundlers and others familiar with the transition’s fundraising efforts, granted anonymity to speak candidly about private meetings, described a palpable shift in urgency in recent days, driven by what they described as the increasing likelihood that President Donald Trump wouldn’t relinquish the money before he leaves office in January, as well as the multiple crises facing the incoming administration.

‘You’re a Liar’ – BMO blasts Abaribe, releases names of Igbos in Aso-Rock

0

The Buhari Media Organization has branded Senator Enyinnaya Abaribe a ‘liar’ for claiming that only one Igbo man works in Aso-rock during a live interview on Channels TV a few days ago.

The group, in a statement, described Abaribe’s comments as a ’tissue of lies’, adding that President Muhammadu Buhari has several aides of Igbo origin.

“His further attempt to give the impression that President Muhammadu Buhari has not done anything for that region is quite laughable and ridiculous, given the realities on the ground”, the statement read.

The signed by the group’s Chairman Niyi Akinsiju and Secretary Cassidy Madueke that Senator Abaribe ended up making himself look silly by suggesting that the only personal aide of the President from the region is ‘only’ a photographer.

“It beggars belief that an opposition Senator who has been in the corridors of powers since 1999 could knowingly seek to hoodwink Nigerians with a false narrative in a bid to portray President Buhari in a bad light.”

“Aside from being wide off the mark on the multiple award-winning former ‘This Day’ editors, Sunday Aghaeze who was headhunted by the President for the role he is playing in the Presidency, Abaribe out of mischief, or perhaps ignorance, left out Oge Modie, Senior Special Assistant to the President on Strategic Communications and Uche Ozurumba, Special Assistant to the President on Strategic Communications.

“Others are Francis Anatogu, Senior Special Assistant (SSA) to the President (public sector matters); Nneka Ikejiani, Senior Technical Assistant to the President (delivery unit); Somkele Awa-Kalu, Special Assistant to the President (research); Tochi Nwachukwu, Special Assistant to the President (power privatization) and Nkechi Chukwueke, Special Assistant to the President (community engagement).

There are also Nkoli Anyaoku, Special Assistant to the President (DCOS); Nonye Ojekwe, Special Assistant to the President (political matters); Louisa Chinedu-Okeke, Special Assistant to the President (finance) and Juliet Chikaodili-Nwagu, Special Assistant to the President (justice sector reforms and international relations).

“Or is it that the Senator who has no record of achievement in all his years as a senior PDP government official wants to deny their ‘Igboness’ as people like him love to do mischievously?

“We challenge him to tell Nigerians what he has done in his political career for the South East people from when he was Deputy Governor in Abia State in 1999 to all his years in the Senate, especially when his party was in power at the center.”

“Abaribe’s State is also seen as one of the worst in terms of development out of the 36 States in the country even though his party had produced all the Governors since the return to civil rule, yet he is so comfortable with hateful and divisive rhetorics.”

“If he could afford to sleep comfortably each night with what his party has been doing in Abia since1999, then we won’t be surprised he could seek to water down the concern expressed by the Ebonyi State Governor Dave Umahi about PDP’s treatment of the South East,” the group added.
