Sports minister denies demanding N81m to cut grass at national stadium

0

The minister of youths and sports, Sunday Dare has denied requesting N81m to cut grass at the Moshood Abiola National Stadium in Abuja.

This is following a report making the rounds that the ministry is presided over by Dare is planning to planning to spend said amount on cutting the overgrown grass at the stadium.

Dare’s clarification was contained in a statement signed on Sunday by John Akanji, his media assistant.
According to the statement, the minister said the report was “misleading” and a “misrepresentation” of what he said.

The minister, who noted that his statement was twisted, stressed that it would be a misplaced priority to spend such a huge amount to cut grass at the stadium when there are so many other competing matters that need to be attended to.

“The Minister believes merely cutting the grass would amount to not just gross waste of scarce resources, but misplacement of priorities,” the statement read.

“This clarifications became necessary following a misleading and out of context newspaper report that the Minister said a proposed amount of 81m was received by the Ministry.

“It has become imperative and a necessity to clear the air on the misleading headline by a newspaper that the Minister would spend 81 Million to clear grass at the Moshood Abiola National Stadium Abuja.

“What the Minister said was that it would be wrong and a misplaced priority to spend a huge amount of 81 MIllion to cut grass when there are so many other competing matters that need to be attended to.

“A one-time clearing of the stadium would cost 81million. If I tell Nigerians that I would be spending 81MIllion to cut grass so that there would be no rats and grasscutters, what do you think of their response?

“The same press would condemn such action as a waste of money and misplacement of priorities. It is therefore unethical, mischievous, unprofessional and unfair to twist the statement to suit the interest of the writer.”

The Senator representing Borno South Senatorial District, Ali Ndume, has openly declared his admiration for former President Goodluck Jonathan.

Ndume, who said he used to criticise Jonathan when he was in power, noted that he now appreciates the former president’s tenure with the benefit of hindsight.

The Borno Senator said other people who were skeptical about the Jonathan’s behaviour have also realised how great he is, adding that many Nigerians don’t value what they have until they lose it.

“For this country, I think Nigerians know that they don’t value what they have until they lose that thing. We thank God for your life and you have changed the political culture and landscape of this country.

“You don’t know how great you are in the eyes of those that were skeptical, those that don’t know you, those that didn’t come close to you. But now, honestly, I am one of those that used to criticize you very well, but I will say it was constructive move.

“He wanted to be president but Nigeria being what it is, it was a different thing entirely. Like I said, he left a landmark on this country.”

The lawmaker and Goodluck Jonathan were present at the Grand Opening of Dr. PhysiQ Specialist Center for Wellness and Medical Lifestyle Change, and launching of a book titled: ‘Everything heals” authored by Dr. Susana Adams, the CEO of the Centre.

Ndume also stated that his recent detention at Kuje prison and subsequent release from the custody was the will of God, saying that “as God wants it, that I must be here, because I was just released from detention yesterday night (Friday), maybe God wants me to attend this occasion, otherwise, I would have been in Kuje prison up till now.”

“I must confess, as people call me stubborn person, I’m also a stubborn person… I feel I need to make this testimony here, and also appreciate Mr.(Former) President, as they say you will never know what you have until you lose it. I will stop there”.

I planned APC switch with Anyim, NASS members – Umahi

0

Ebonyi State Governor, David Umahi, said on Sunday he planned his defection to the All Progressives Con(APC) with former Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Pius Anyim, and some members of the National Assembly from the state.

The governor, who disclosed this at an APC stakeholders’ meeting in Abakaliki, added that Anyim backed out of the plan because he (Umahi) went to see President Muhammadu Buhari on the plan without carrying him along.

He added that the only grievance of the National Assembly members and other Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) leaders in the state was that he joined the ruling party before them.

The governor revealed that the plan was for the former Senate president and other PDP leaders in Ebonyi to join him in APC two weeks after he must have successfully defected to the party.

Umahi formally switched to the APC on November 17.

He said: “They were planning to ambush me, but it is difficult to catch the air.”

On the claim that Anyim supported his governorship bid with N5billion in 2015, Umahi added: “I was a deputy governor, somebody occupying the highest position from the South-East went and arranged for a N5billion loan for me to prosecute the presidential election for his government. I had to sell many of my properties to pay back that money.

“Let me tell you, I’m not afraid of anybody but I respect everybody. But I have said that if God sent me, this will be the last fight in this state.

“All these people that came together to fight me, they collect contracts, they collect monthly pay, they collect vehicles. And when they are asked to bring people that worked for us, they will bring their wives, children, and relations.

“Now, they are dressing words for us. We are in chapter one, in chapter two, I will publish all that I have done for the leaders of this state.”

Secret Service Agents are currently guarding the building where President-elect Joe Biden was being treated for hairline fractures to his right foot.

It was earlier believed by officials that Joe Biden twisted his ankle, but his personal physician, Kevin O’Connor has confirmed that he had sprained his right foot and X-rays did not appear to show “obvious” bone fractures.

The Minister of Youth and Sports Development, Sunday Dare has revealed that it will cost the ministry N81m to cut the grass and clear the weed that have taken over the MKO Abiola National Stadium in Abuja.

He stated this recently while speaking during the one-day seminar organised by the Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN) FCT chapter.

According to him, the ministry approached the Abuja Environmental Protection Board (AEPB) for assessment in the stadium, which was built in 2003 with N53 billion on a 29 hectares (72 acres) of land.
The stadium is divided into Package A which houses the Main Bowl and Package B which houses other facilities like basketball courts, NFF office, volleyball courts, tennis courts, squash courts.

“We approached AEPB to come see what can be done to clear the grass and weed in the stadium and they told us it will cost us N81m. If we tell Nigerians we used N81m which is not even available, there will be an outcry. The funds are not really there for us and that is why we are partnering with private investors to bring back the key components of our infrastructures,” he said.

#EndSARS: Don’t Subvert Truth Before Lagos Panel, Group Warns Lagos Govt, Amnesty International

0

The Lagos state government and Amnesty International, AI, have been warned to allow the Judicial Panel of Inquiry set up to probe the allegation of brutality against the Special Anti-Robbery Squad in Lagos state to work without any form of interference.

A civil society organisation, Advocates For Social Justice, at a press conference in Abuja, yesterday, warned the Lagos government and the rights group against subversion of truth before the commission.

Mr. Agwu Gabriel Esq., Executive Director of the group said it is alarmed that a delegation from Lagos State Government is in London for a meeting with Amnesty International to exonerate Lagos State Governor, Mr. Babajide Sanwoolu, on the deployment of the military to manage the #EndSARS protest at Lekki Toll Gate on October 20, 2020.

The group alleged that Amnesty International is at the forefront of the campaign of calumny being waged against the Nigerian military .

The Executive Director said, ”The #EndSARS protests turned violent on the strength of its engineered interventions and campaign of fake news in which it triggered the misplaced outrage about a massacre that never happened.

”To have a sense of how badly Amnesty International lied against Nigeria and its military, Cable News Network (CNN) has walked back its claim of 38 fatalities from the Lekki Toll Gate incident because its report was based on the lies told by the NGO. Nigerians had risen up against the lies prompting the network to recant its flawed reporting.

”Amnesty International lies had been exposed long before CNN was forced to make a volte face. When its Country Director, Osai Ojigho went on Arise TV to continue the offensive against Nigeria but could not provide evidence to support her organization’s claim that the military massacred protesters in Lekki. All she could provide was the lame quip that the military has a tradition of killing people and taking their corpses away, which is another lie that Amnesty International has replicated and elevated to the level of a myth”.

The group said Ojigho, representing her organization, went as far as riding the coattails of a proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) to go testify against the Nigerian government and military in support of a terrorist organization.

On the proccedings before the Unitd Kingdom Parliament on the Lekki incident in Lagos, Mr. Gabriel described it as a rehash of the proceedings of the Canadian Parliamentary committee, which can best be described as a charade.

”Again, the UK Parliamentary show of shame was brokered by Amnesty International, which possibly still thinks that the Britain can resume being Nigeria’s colonial master if its staff lie enough about human rights abuses allegedly committed by the Nigerian Army or other security agencies.

”This and much more is public knowledge about Amnesty International and the poisonous branding it is carrying out on Nigeria. It is something that right thinking Nigerians have been clamouring to bring an end about. They see the NGO for the monster it is and they have not stopped drawing attention to the danger that this organization poses to the country.

”Unfortunately, Lagos state is neither reading the national mood correctly nor properly evaluating the facts before it. The people around Governor Sanwoolu are apparently still addicted to being inferior in the face of a foreign-based NGO that has the reputation of sowing discord and crisis around the world, one that has made it a permanent goal to bring Nigeria into ruins.

”Interestingly, one of the ways Amnesty International attempts to undermine Nigeria is by casting aspersions on the institutions of the country. It has persistently targeted the military and security establishments with this approach. It has equally added other institutions like the judiciary. Its latest target is logically the Lagos State Judicial Panel of Inquiry”, the group said.

The group called on the Lagos state government to immediately stops further interface, interaction and contact with Amnesty International in Nigeria, United Kingdom and in any other country of the world.
