Twitter set to transfer Trump’s @POTUS account to Biden

U.S. President Donald Trump may be foot-dragging over the transfer of power to President elect, Joe Biden, but Twitter Inc is making arrangement for seamless transition at the White House.

The social media platform said on Saturday it will transfer control of the @POTUS account to the Joe Biden administration on Jan. 20.

The @POTUS account is the official account of the President of the United States and is separate from the @realDonaldTrump account that President Donald Trump uses to tweet.

“Twitter is actively preparing to support the transition of White House institutional Twitter accounts on January 20th, 2021. As we did for the presidential transition in 2017, this process is being done in close consultation with the National Archives and Records,” the company confirmed to Reuters on Saturday.

Concerns grow for Eritrean refugees as Tigray conflict rages

As fighting continues in Ethiopia’s Tigray region, the United Nations is calling for the opening of routes to four refugee camps sheltering Eritreans, who are almost fully reliant on humanitarian aid.

Ann Encontre, the UNHCR representative in Ethiopia, said she was “deeply concerned about the worsening humanitarian situation in Tigray, which is compounded by the lack of access and our current inability to bring in food and supplies to those in need, including the 100,000 Eritrean refugees in the region”.

“While it is difficult to assess the situation on the ground – we have not been able to talk to our teams for the past 48 hours – we fear that civilians, including refugees, could get caught up in the crossfire.

“We need urgent access to the four refugee camps to be able to assist,” she said.

Eritrean refugees often leave to escape mandatory, indefinite military service and repression, or search for better opportunities out of what has long been one of the world’s most isolated dictatorships.

By 2018, the UN said approximately 507,000 people – almost one-tenth of Eritrea’s population – had fled.

While Encontre said refugees live “in harmony” with northern Ethiopians – with whom they share a language and similar culture – “any breakdown of normal life puts those in camps at higher risk, particularly in an area where stocks and access to services are dwindling”.

Gbajabiamila’s aide who shot vendor not our personnel – FCT Police

The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Command has distanced itself from the security aide attached to House of Reps Speaker, Femi Gbajabiamila, who fired the gun that killed a newspaper vendor on Thursday.

In a statement released on Friday by the FCT Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Yusuf Mariam, it was stated that the security agent, who fired the shot was not a policeman, according to preliminary investigations.

She said the Commissioner of Police FCT, CP. Bala Ciroma, has ordered a discreet investigation into the incident.

“The FCT Police Command wishes to unequivocally refute the allegation making round sections of the media that a Police officer attached to the convoy of the Speaker of the House of Representatives shot at a newspaper vendor within the Three Arm Zone on Thursday 19th November,2020,” the statement reads.

“Contrary to the misleading information, preliminary investigation into the unfortunate incident reveals that the security aide who shot at the vendor is not a member of the Nigeria Police Force.

“However, the Commissioner of Police FCT, CP. Bala Ciroma, has ordered a discreet investigation into the incident.

“While commiserating with the family and friends of the deceased, the Commissioner of Police wishes to guarantee members of the public that the Command will be lucid in its investigation and ensure the findings are made public.”

However, Mr Gbajabiamila has identified the security aide as Abdullahi Hassan.

Gbajabiamila confirmed that Hassan, who until yesterday was a security officer attached to him, is an agent of the Department of State Services .

The Speaker disclosed this in his second statement on Friday.

The Speaker, who vowed to get justice for the deceased, disclosed that he had contacted Okereke’s family members and would meet with them.

The statement read, “The unfortunate death of Mr Ifeanyi Okereke at the hands of one of my security aides has left me deeply shaken.

“Mr Okereke was a citizen going about his business, trying to make a living for himself and his family. There is no reason for his life to have ended the way it did.

“This morning, I have handed over the security operative, Abdullahi M. Hassan, to the Department of State Security (DSS) for investigation and appropriate administrative and judicial action. In the interim, he has been suspended from the convoy.

“l expect, and I will see to it that the family of Mr Ifeanyi Okereke receives the full measure of justice so that their bereavement is not compounded by any actions that can cause them further pain and suffering.

“I have expressed my personal condolence to his family and have arranged to meet with them when the parents of Mr Okereke, who are already on their way, arrive in Abuja.

“Additionally, I have committed to them that I will support his wife and the immediate family he has left behind.

“I commiserate with the family of Mr Ifeanyi Okereke and ask all Nigerians to join me at this time to pray for the peaceful repose of his soul.”

Police Arrests Woman Who Cooks With Mortuary Water in Uyo

Mrs Gloria Edet a.k.a.Madam Honey Food, who owns a restaurant along Itam road Uyo,was arrested on Wednesday after she was exposed by a mortuary attendant who claimed she was owing him money for three months.

The morgue attendant further claimed that Edet visits him daily to buy the water he used in bathing corpses.

On interrogation, Edet confessed that she uses the water she buys from the mortuary to make the charms she uses in preparing the food she sells to attract more customers and make more money.

She said because of the charms anyone that goes into her restaurant to eat will automatically be addicted to eating her food.

The woman is reportedly at the police headquarters, Ikot Akpanabia, Uyo

Establishment of Institute of Trypanosomiasis Research in Gombe Will Boost Livestock Production, Economy’ -Gov Yahaya
Gombe state Governor, Alhaji Muhammadu Inuwa Yahaya says the establishment of the National Institute for Trypanosomiasis ( NITR) will improve livestock production and impact positively on the lives of the people of the state.

The Governor stated this when he granted audience to the Minister of Science and Technology, Dr Ogbonnaya Onu who was in the State for the commissioning ceremony of the Zonal office of NITR in Gombe.

Speaking at the ceremony, the governor told his guest that more than 70 per cent of the people of Gombe State are farmers involved in either crop or livestock production, noting that an institute like NITR will help to combat the devastating effect of tsetse flies on both animals and human beings.

Governor Inuwa commented that Gombe will no doubt benefit from the institute’s services and that his administration is willing to contribute to its growth, explaining that besides the infectious nature of tsetse flies on animals, human beings are also at risk of contracting onchocerciasis each time they come in contact with them, hence the need to galvanize ideas and forces to combat the menace.

Still making his remarks, he noted that the setting of the zonal office of NITR in Gombe is apt which was why on request by the Federal Ministry of Science and Technology he wasted no time in allocating a piece of land for the construction of the research centre, describing the speed at which the office was built as impressive.

“When the Ministry of Science and Technology approached me for a land to build this structure, I gave it instant approval and they equally responded instantly and you can see the result here today”.

“A lot of Federal Government ministries and agencies came and took allocation and abandoned them, but for the Federal Ministry of Science and Technology, the very month the land was allocated you swung into action and put up a structure, so that confirms the level of dedication, commitment and hope you want to bequeath to the people of the State”.

“Gombe State as you rightly said is at the centre of the north-east and as such whatever is sited here will benefit the entire region as it will not take more than two hours, especially in the days when roads were good from any of the State’s headquarters to get to Gombe”.

The Governor said the State Government will enlighten the populace on the benefit of the institute owing to the fact Gombe is home to one of the largest grazing reserves in Africa, the Wawa Zange Grazing Reserve, which measures about one hundred and forty four hectares of land dotted with livestock breeders.

To this end, the Governor said, anything that can be done to support livestock development in the State and by extension the north-east is highly welcome. He thanked President Muhammadu Buhari for approving the setting up of the NITR’s north-east zonal office in Gombe.

Earlier, the Minister of Science and Technology, Dr. Ogbonnaya Onu said the setting up of the NITR’s zonal office in Gombe marks a great milestone as the centre is of great economic importance to the State and the nation considering the fact that Gombe State has a rich livestock industry.

The Minister noted that economies of many countries across the world are dependent on livestock production, expressing confidence that Gombe State can blaze the trail in animal husbandry for the benefit of the people of the State and the country as a whole.

He noted that the setting up of the institute in Gombe will improve the quality of livestock which will translate to increase in yields in terms of meat, milk and other derivatives from livestock and that this will eventually increase the income of livestock farm.

A former Governor of Ekiti State, Ayodele Fayose, says leader of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Bola Ahmed Tinubu has paid his dues.

Fayose, a key member of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), described Tinubu as one of the greatest builders of men in Nigeria.

The ex-governor stated this during an interactive session with journalists as part of the events marking his 60th birthday in Ado Ekiti on Friday.

He said: “I am not championing the course of Tinubu, I am not in the position to do that. But there is no denying the fact that Tinubu is a prominent Yoruba leader both in APC or PDP. There is no denying the fact. Fayose is a prominent son of the Yoruba nation. Governors Nyesom Wike , Ifeanyi Okowa, and Okezie Ikpeazu, are prominent sons of southern Nigeria.

“What I am trying to say is that, we can’t hide their identities and goodwill for political reasons. We can’t deny their contributions. Other leaders from the North like Ahmadu Bello and Sardauna, they made different impacts not necessarily like Awolowo. So, Tinubu has paid his dues. I have paid my dues, Okowa has paid his dues and Wike has paid his dues, we need to acknowledge them.

“The late Balarabe Musa, who was a leader of note and repute, cannot be forgotten in history. For me, Tinubu, has paid his dues, I stand by that. I have not seen Tinubu after the Ekiti election by any means, we haven’t even met at a function or saw him passed.

“President Muhammadu Buhari condoled with me on the death of my sister, does it mean we are on the same page politically? No. I will not sit down in any corner to shoot down Tinubu. I am not a member of APC and I will never be. But I supported Governor Fayemi to be governor by Tinubu’s influence at a time.”

Fayose, who also spoke on the defection of the Ebonyi State Governor, Dave Umahi, to APC, despite the multifaceted crises in the PDP, he won’t jump ship like some leaders of the party had done.

“If we are fighting in PDP, let us fight it inside PDP. People who have been jumping ship are armed robbers. They are being driven by greed and inordinate ambition.

“These are indications of the type of leaders we have in our country who are without ideology. They go for only what they feel would benefit them.

“Our politics is sick. Everything in Nigeria is currently sick and is a function of the leadership that we have. Governor Umahi’s joining APC after benefiting several positions in PDP was unprincipled. We do not accept the excuses given by the governor.

“I am not satisfied with some things in PDP, but, leaving the party does not equally solve the problems,” he added.
