Buhari Assures Chadian Leader Nigeria’s Support to Stabilize

President Muhammadu Buhari has assured the Chadian Transitional Leader that Nigeria will assist the Republic of Chad to stabilise, and return to constitutional order.

The President stated this on Friday at State House, Abuja, while hosting Lt. Gen. Mahamat Idris Deby Itno, the President, Transitional Military Council of Chad.

“We are bound together by culture and geography, and we will help in all ways we can,” President Buhari told his visitor. “Nigerians know and appreciate the role Chad played in helping us to combat terrorism, and we will continue the collaboration.”

Marshal Idris Deby Itno, President of the country had died in battle last month while leading troops to confront insurgents, who had come in through Libya.

The country set up the transitional council, headed by the son of the deceased, and a return to democratic order is expected in 18 months.

The Nigerian President said the late Marshal Itno “was a personal friend, and a friend of Nigeria and Chad has been very steadfast in defending Nigeria,” so the country should not hesitate to ask for help in areas it deemed necessary.

President Buhari said Nigeria would help strengthen the Lake Chad Basin Commission (LCBC) and the Multinational Joint Task Force (MNJTF), adding; “We will also help you to ensure a smooth transition in 18 months, as you have promised your people.”

Lt. Gen. Itno thanked Nigeria for the solidarity shown after the passage of the former President, noting that the main objective of the Transitional Military Council “is the security and cohesion of our country.”

He recommitted to democratic, free, fair polls in 18 months, telling President Buhari: “You were very close to Marshal Itno. I’m here to reaffirm that relationship, and for you to support our transition.

”We rely on our brother country Nigeria, as we have shared history, culture, and geography. We are ready to be guided by you in our journey to constitutional rule.”

George Alli applauds Homeland Defence over arrest of another robbery syndicate in Otukpo

Another homegrown security outfit, the Homeland Defense have arrested another suspected armed robbery gang in Otukpo for various offences.

According to the Police, the suspects which includes Ogbu Ogaba: Daniel James; Samuel Peter; Paul okoh; Ogwu obenyi aka coolio and Oche Umoru a.k.a General; were arrested at different locations in Otukpo.

Guns of different calibers were said to have been recovered from the gangs. They have been handed over to the intelligence Response Team (IRT) and moved to Abuja for further investigation.

In a related development, the Homeland Defense have arrested another robbery suspect in Otukpo. In the video Attached to this post, the suspect who gave his name as Ogbu Ogaba. Ogaba who hailed from Ado LG confessed to have been part of a five man robbery gang group that robbed Exim pharmacy sometime ago in Otukpo.

Others mentioned by him are: Remedy of Egli Avenue; Jeff from Upu village; Francis Obeya, grandson of late Chief. Obande Obeya, an Okada rider from Akpegede who goes by the alias NGC.

He said the gun they used during the robbery at Exim Pharmacy were procured from one Embassy and Junior. The Police have mopped some of the gang members to Makurdi and two are said to be at large.

The Executive Chairman of Otukpo Local Government, RT. Hon George Alli, in his reaction, showered praises on Homeland Defence, Vigilante groups in Otukpo, the Otukpo Police Division and the IRT.

He expressed deep satisfaction for the roles played by the various security outfits. Alli said the security groups have made the people of Otukpo proud and that the people remain solidly behind them. He reiterated that Council will not relent in its resolve to stamp out criminality in Otukpo.

The Chairman reminded Otukpo residents of about the slogan from last month’s security summit. He reechoed the slogan; “If you see something, say something”.

Buhari's son-in-law, Gimba Yau Kumo declared wanted over N31bn fraud

Resident Muhammadu Buhari’s son-in-law, Gimba Yau Kumo, and two others were on Thursday declared wanted by the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission, ICPC, over diversion and misappropriation of 65 million National Housing fund. Mr. Kumo, a former managing director of the Federal Mortgage Bank of Nigeria, who in 2016 wed Mr. Buhari’s second daughter Fatima, Mr. Tarry Rufus and Mr. Bola Ogunsola, were announced wanted over misappropriation and diversion of $65 million National Housing finance.

A statement signed by Azuka C. Ogugua, ICPC Spokesperson, urged the public to provide details about the whereabouts of Mr Kumo and his cohort. “The men whose pictures appear above, Mr. Tarry Rufus,” Mr. Gimba Yau Kumo and Mr. Bola Ogunsola, are hereby declared WANTED from the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) in connection with problems bordering on misappropriation of National Housing Funds and diversion of the amount of Sixty Five Million dollars ($65,000,000),” the commission said.

Before today, Mr Kumo has been researched by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission within a N3billon fraud. Though Mr Buhari campaigned on riding Nigerian public service of corruption, saying Nigeria must kill corruption before it kills Nigerianshis allies and partners have been fingered in sundry corruption cases. Peoples Gazette reported late Isa Funta, an ally of Mr. Buhari, obtained millions of naira from the Federal Inland Revenue Service and how the current Acting EFCC Chair was included theft before he had been tapped for the job by Mr. Buhari. Back in January, Transparency International in its 2020 Corruption Perceptions Index (CPI) reported that Nigeria’s ratings plunged to 149 on a categorized scale for”highly corrupt” states — down three places from its 146th position in 2019.

EFCC parades three persons including a police inspector

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has paraded three persons — including a police inspector — for impersonating operatives of the agency. The Cable had reported how residents of New Horizon Estate in Lagos had nabbed two “fake” officials, while another individual, recognized as a police officer. The three guys were said to have stormed the estate with fake EFCC identity cards and that which seemed to be a court record ordering forfeiture of a house.

A resident of the estate, Samuel Otigba, had uttered the episode in a Twitter post on Wednesday, also said the men were handed over to EFCC. Confirming the episode on Thursday, the anti-graft agency identified members of this three-man gang as Pascal Ugwu Chijoke, Sodiq Ibrahim Adekunle, and Edwin Bassey — a police inspector. The agency warned Nigerians to become wary of impostors who use the identity of the commission to extort unsuspecting members of the public.

“The fraudsters were arrested at New Horizon Estate, Lekki, Lagos, at the center of the illegal operation to function a Court Order purported to have emanated in the Mushin Magistrate Court, on an unsuspecting victim,” Wilson Uwujaren, EFCC spokesman, said in a statement.

“The three-man gang of Pascal Ugwu Chijoke, Sodiq Ibrahim Adekunle and Edwin Bassey, a Police Inspector, posing as EFCC operatives allegedly stormed the house of their target with all the paraphernalia of average EFCC raid, wearing imitation EFCC branded coats and identity cards.

“Ahmed warned Nigerians to be skeptical of impostors, using the fantastic name of the Commission to extort unsuspecting goals. He encouraged citizens to be vigilant and report suspicious activities to the Commission.”

President Muhammadu Buhari and members of the immediate family have observed the Eid Al-Fitr prayer in the presidential villa. The president’s choice to observe the prayer in the Aso Rock was in accordance with the COVID-19 protocol stipulated by the presidential steering committee (PSC).

Buhari was joined by Ahmed Lawan, senate president Femi Gbajabiamila, speaker of the house of representatives; Babagana Monguno, national security advisor; Ibrahim Gambar, chief of staff and other aides to observe the Truth. Aisha Buhari, the first lady, was also observed praying with her brothers in the presidential villa. Before, the president had said he will observe a personal Eid Al-Fitr in the presidential villa, without receiving visitors. Big congregational prayers usually come following the month-long Ramadan fast but using all the COVID-19 pandemic, the prayers have been limited to small parties.

Five soldiers shot dead at Imo state

The Bende Divisional Headquarters of the Nigeria Police Force, Bende Local Government Area of Abia State has reportedly been attacked by hoodlums.
The attack, that our correspondent accumulated, happened on Wednesday night.  The Country learnt a policeman was shot in the leg and then hurried to the hospital for medical attention. The police station was also said to have been razed down by the hoodlums who also set some detainees free.

Gombe state deputy governor, Manassah Daniel Jatau secures loan to fight erosion

Gombe State Deputy Governor, Manassah Daniel Jatau, has stated that the state government is thinking about taking a loan from the World Bank to address erosion problems at the Federal College of Education (Technical) Gombe. He told that a Presidential Visitation Panel led by Professor Kenneth Okiongbo, who had been in Gombe State within an assessment trip to the school yesterday, that although it is a federal establishment, the people of this nation are major benefactors of the faculty.

He received the presidential board on behalf of this state, Muhammad Inuwa Yahaya. According to him, the intervention for the college wouldn’t be out of place, hence, it is to the benefit of the nation. The deputy governor said the state authorities had already intervened in the erosion management of the school via the diversion of some major structures at the state mega park which is quite near the school.

Jatau said the government was working assiduously to the fact and completion of their job on the erosion sites. He added that the government is constituted of many educationists, as such, it’s very sensitive to matters which has to do with the instructional development of the state. The deputy governor, therefore, called on the board, especially the school management, to assist the state-owned College of Education in Billiri, which can be in its tender phase, in a variety of facets of its development.

Earlier, the Chairman of the Presidential Panel, Professor Okiongbo, told the deputy governor they were in FCE (Tech) Gombe to evaluate the functioning of the faculty in the fields of governance, academic standard, physical infrastructure, finance and administration of the faculty. He called on the state authorities to do more interventions at the school in the areas of erosion control and road infrastructures, stating however that the faculty is well handled, as he gave kudos to its management.

A local vigilante group in Otukpo has arrested two suspected members of a notorious five man kidnapping and robbery gangs who have been terrorising residents of Otukpo, especially Igbanonmaje axis, following intel volunteered by some members of the public who wish to remain anonymous.

The suspects, 23-years old Abubakar Usman and 25-years old Usman sani were arrested at different locations around Otukpo. According to the Police in Otukpo, the two have confessed to some crimes of robbery and kidnappings which took place in Otukpo recently. Some of their victims also came forward and identified them.

The suspects are said to have given the Police some useful information about their activities.

Reacting to the development, the Executive Chairman of Otukpo Local Government, Rt. Hon. George Alli said, “This latest news of arrest of the suspects is a welcome development. I am particularly happy about the positive responses we’ve been getting from residents after the security summit we held on 30th April.”

Speaking further, Hon. Alli said, “the common language used at the security meeting was, “If you see something, say something”. I am glad that our people are responding positively to that”.

The Chairman assured residents of Otukpo and its environs of the commitment of his administration in fighting all forms of criminality and bringing it to its bareest minimum.

 

Eid-el-fitr 2021: DEPOWA, Israeli Embassy support families of fallen heroes, distribute food items

A total of 360 families, including widows and orphans of fallen heroes of the Armed Forces of Nigeria residing within the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja and contiguous states have benefited from food items distributed by Defence and Police Officers’ Wives (DEPOWA) in conjunction with the Israeli Embassy in commemoration of this year’s Eid-il-fitri celebration.

The food items tagged “COVID-19 Ramadan package” include rice, beans, noodles, vegetable oil and semovina which were donated by the Israeli Embassy, Chabad-Aid and the Jewish community in Nigeria. The gesture was also aimed at commemorating the 60 years of diplomatic relationship between the nations of Israel and Nigeria.

The DEPOWA President, Barr. (Mrs) Vickie Irabor while addressing the beneficiaries reassured the military widows of DEPOWA’s commitment towards addressing their welfare needs. The DEPOWA President further maintained that the sacrifices of their husbands, the fallen heroes will never be in vain, as the Armed Forces of Nigeria (AFN), DEPOWA and the nation will continue to remember their loyalty and patriotism.

Mrs Irabor conveyed the goodwill message of the Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), and the Service Chiefs in which they further assured the widows of the commitment of the AFN in working closely with DEPOWA to support them and their children to quality live.

The DEPOWA President lauded the Israeli Embassy and the entire Jewish community for touching the lives of the widows and orphans of fallen heroes. This gesture, she said, has opened new vista of relationship between DEPOWA and the Jewish community.

She urged other corporate organizations and individuals to emulate the gesture, by supporting DEPOWA’s humanitarian efforts, as the association is ready to partner with Nigerians and the international community in its numerous humanitarian and social intervention programmes aimed at bringing succor to less privileged persons in the society.

Speaking earlier, the Israeli Deputy Ambassador to Nigeria, Mr Yotam Kreiman, while presenting the relief items, commended DEPOWA for providing humanitarian services for families of fallen and other vulnerable groups.

Mr Kreiman noted that the Isreali Embassy share in the grief and pains of the widows. He commended the AFN and other security agencies for working assiduously in the defence of Nigeria as well as protection of lives and property.

Speaking on behalf of the Jewish communities, the Rabbi of Chabad, Mr Israel Uzan, disclosed that the humanitarian donation was significant as it demonstrates the peaceful coexistence between the Jewish and Muslim communities. He added that both the fallen soldiers and their families are the nation’s true heroes.

Mr Usan explained that the Jewish community will equally partner with DEPOWA in others areas of human endeavours.

The National Secretary of the Military Widows Association (MWA), Mrs Deborah Abel, thanked DEPOWA and her collaborators for putting a smile on the faces of the military widows and their families during this festive period. She thanked the DEPOWA President and the CDS for supporting their families since their assumption of office.

DEPOWA is a Non Governmental Organization responsible for the execution of humanitarian and social intervention programmes on behalf of the AFN.
