FG accused the social media giant, Twitter, of double standards in its treatment of issues affecting Nigeria

It cautioned that it wouldn’t allow the microblogging site in order to dictate to President Muhammadu Buhari his views on domestic issues.

The accusation followed the choice of Twitter to delete a contentious article by Buhari on the Nigerian civil war.

The president in the post on Tuesday had warned against insurrection, saying that those fomenting trouble from the South-east is in for a rude shock.

Buhari, at a string of tweets on Tuesday through his confirmed Twitter handle @mbuhari had said: “Lots of these misbehaving now are too young to know about the destruction and loss of lives that happened during the Nigerian civil war. Those of us in the fields for 30 weeks, who travelled through the war, may treat them in the language they know.”

Buhari’s announcement, which was also tweeted, sparked outrage on the societal media with some Nigerians reporting it into Twitter.

But some said the president sounded firm in his warning against perpetrators of violence in the South-east.

But Twitter pulled down the tweet for breaking up its community norms.

Twitter, in a comment, stated: “This Tweet violated the Twitter Rules”

The national government, however, kicked against the decision with the Minister of Information and Culture, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, wondering why Tweeter would aim to a submission by the president on domestic issues but would ignore provocative postings from the leader of this proscribed Independent People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu on its website.

The minister told journalist at the end of the Federal Executive Council (FEC) meeting in the State House, Abuja that Twitter’s mission in Nigeria is suspect.

He wondered if Twitter has deleted offensive tweets from Kanu.

He said: “The assignment of Twitter in Nigeria is very suspect. Has Twitter deleted the violent tweets that Nnamdi Kanu was sending? Has it? The identical Twitter during the ENDSARS protests promoted tweets trying to raise funds for its ENDSARS protesters. It had been the first to close the account of former President of the US, Donald Trump.

But when a similar thing occurred at the Capitol, it turned into an insurrection. You see, we aren’t going to be fooled by anyone. We’ve got a nation to rule and we will do this to the best of our ability. Twitter mission in Nigeria mentioning those two examples is very suspect. What is their agenda?

“How can Mr. President’s speech that anyone who is destroying infrastructure, who’s destroying police stations, who’s destroying INEC offices ought to be prepared for the consequences; is that inciting violence?”

While accepting that Twitter may possess its own rules, Mohammed explained that shouldn’t stop Buhari from expressing his views against a banned organisation like IPOB inciting people to commit arson and the likes in the South-east.

He stated: “Twitter may have its own principles, but it’s not the universal rule. If Mr. President, any place in the world feels really bad and worried about a circumstance, he is free to express such views. We ought to stop comparing apples with oranges. When an organisation is proscribed, it’s different from any other that is not proscribed. We are the ones guilty of double standards.

“I don’t see any place in the world where an organisation — a person will stay somewhere outside Nigeria, also will lead his members to attack the symbols of authority, the police, the army, particularly when that organisation has been proscribed.

“But I am saying you can’t compare anybody with Kanu who boldly say, go and kill policemen.

I believe sometimes…policemen are brothers, they are our uncle, they’re kids. And what’s the offence of these policemen — because they’re working to maintain one. What about soldiers which are putting their lives down to ensure you and I will sleep? It isn’t acceptable anywhere in the world for anyone, anywhere, to stay in the comfort of wherever he is and now give directives to go and kill soldiers, go and kill policemen.”

Asked why Sheikh Ahmed Gumi whose remarks had been considered as justifying Boko Haram activities has not been detained, Mohammed asked who made Gumi the go-between between authorities and Boko Haram.

“Who appointed Gumi middleman between the government and Boko Haram? Listen, for me personally, unless you come and tell me this what Gumi said that’s inciting that you are comparing to Kanu… anyhow what we’re talking differs. We are talking Twitter. If you would like to ask any question about Gumi or any other person, go ahead but please, be the goal,” he added.

In addition, he said if authorities had resolved to pick up all those critical of the Buhari administration, the detention centres would have been full by now.

He explained: “There are so many people who’ve been spewing hatred against Mr. President, against this authorities. So if you want to comment, be honest; don’t have a position, which isn’t objective. If we were to pick up everybody today who had been abusing this government, the detention centres will be filled up and you will be the very first person also to discuss lack of endurance, absence of rule of law.”

Reacting to Buhari’s tweet, human rights activist, Aisha Yesufu, called”insensitive” the civil war event from the president.

I am Igbo, a threat to the people is a threat to me. Any assault on the people is an assault on me personally. Any malignment of the people is a malignment for me personally. We are all Nigerians and no Nigerian is more Nigerian than the others.

“The authorities must ensure that it deploys its resources and its own devices evenly to every part of this country.

“I totally condemn the tweet from the president in which the president has been threatening the Igbo people. He’s threatening them with what happened in 1967. What happened in 1967 was a genocide; a crime against humanity and it must never be allowed to happen again.”

She added:”For a president to come out now and use 1967 as a yardstick to threaten people with what occurred then, together with the 30 months of gruesomeness, with the 30 weeks of heinousness, with the 30 months of atrocities which were meted out on human beings, on fellow brothers and sisters, on children in this country, is inhumane, it’s insensitive, it is callous, and it is unspeakable.”

Reacting in a string of tweets, Fayose wrote: “A president who cannot address his own people in time of catastrophe can certainly not be the sole tweeting on the crisis. Twitter should rather hold Garba Shehu, Lai Mohammed and co-workers (other people ) accountable.

“It is obvious that those with the president’s forces because of him don’t understand when and where to discontinue their power. Unfortunately, Twitter may not understand that Buhari is not the sole working the handle.”

Corps Members have been advised to utilize the opportunities of the service year to promote national unity and cohesion.

NYSC Director-General, Brigadier General Shuaibu Ibrahim stated this today while addressing Corps Members during his visit to FCT Orientation Camp in Kubwa, Abuja.

The DG who said the NYSC Scheme was established for the promotion of National Unity and integration, urged the Corps Members to shun ethnic and religious jingoism.

“Take the advantage of the service year to promote national unity. Use the Orientation Course to imbibe team spirit, resilience, leadership skills and endurance.

“Abide by the tenets of the Orientation Course and let the spirit of NYSC live in you forever”, he said.

He enjoined the Corps Members to embrace the four cardinal programmes of the NYSC Scheme namely; Orientation Course, Primary Assignment, Community Development Service and Winding up/Passing-Out and adhere strictly to NYSC Bye Laws in order to have a hitch-free service year.

The Director-General also warned them against engagement in social vices, adding that the Scheme was not a haven for lawbreakers.

“Respect the dignity of labour and embrace hardwork. Do not engage in cybercrime. Avoid cutting corners and the sky will be your limit”, he said.

Ibrahim advised the Corps Members to be security conscious and avoid night traveling.

He added that they could approach any military or police barrack to pass the night, but with their NYSC identification cards.

He warned them against unauthorized journey saying offenders would be sanctioned in accordance with NYSC Bye Laws.

Speaking further, the Director-General said efforts were on to get Government approval for the establishment of National Youth Service Trust Fund from which funds would be made available for interested Corps Members to start their businesses after undergoing the NYSC Skills Acquisition and Entrepreneurship Development (SAED) training.

He added that part of the fund would also be used to maintain camp facilities and finance other needs of the Scheme.

Ibrahim therefore urged them to embrace the SAED Programme which was designed to expose them to vocational training that would make them business owners and wealth creators and not seekers of salaried jobs.

“Jobs are very scarce to get but drive your vision with passion and contentment and the sky will be your limit”, the DG said.

Ibrahim advised the Corps Members to identify the felt needs of their host communities and initiate laudable projects that would improve their standard of living.

“Adhere to the rules in your places of Primary Assignment. Be good ambassadors of the NYSC Scheme and use the Social Media responsibly.

“Do not use the Social Media to spread fake news and unverified information but use it to promote National interest”, the Director-General said.

The order has been controversial in recent years, with state governments dissociating from it.

Militarization in the region to combat IPOB is thought to have forced many to stay indoors.

The result is empty streets across Enugu and Abia states, according to images shared by residents in the region.

Gov. Okezie Ikpeazu had Sunday night said Abia traders would not be compelled to open their shops today if they chose not to do so.

Shuaibu Ibrahim: The man behind the wheels at NYSC

0

By Prince Francis Chilaka

The appointment of the current DG of NYSC was a prophecy long foretold when he was still a young Major in the Nigerian Army, so to most of his close friends and associates, we were not shocked when he was eventually appointed the DG. This is one appointment this government should be very proud of, it’s a round peg in a round hole.

Brigadier General Shuaibu Ibrahim, is not just any kind of military officer, he is disciplinarian, God fearing and an Associate Professor. In appearance, he is unassuming; but his personage is an embodiment of multiple military and administrative talents that can never be questioned. He is one man governed by a doctrine of excellence anywhere he finds his feet and believes in making the best use of all human resources.

Since his appointment he has shown high level organization skills. It’s on record that he is the first DG of the scheme that has thought out of the box by tinkering with ideas to make the scheme support the Federal Government in funding its operations while at the same time maintaining high standards, discipline and the unification agenda of the founding fathers of the scheme in 1973.

Listening to his speech just after his appointment, it was crystal clear that he was more than prepared and ready for the work ahead, hear him “I appeal to our corps employers to take care of the welfare of members and mentor them.” Mentorship is what drives the world today.

Take it or leave it, the truth is that the scheme is rated as one of the best performing federal government agencies today, because a motivated staff leaves nothing to chance in the performance of their official functions. It is natural that when the worker is motivated to work, he goes the extra mile excitedly.

Brig. Gen. Ibrahim has capitalized on this weapon, by his undiluted and undistracted attention to issues of welfare and remunerations. Timely payment of salaries and legitimate allowances ignite the ambience of a workplace, anywhere in the world. Even the Holy scriptures admonishes that a worker deserve his wages. The corpers have never had it this good. Even when some state government are finding it difficult to pay the minimum wage, same cannot be said of the scheme.

The relentless efforts of the Director General has been able to catapult the Scheme to a comfortable pedestal through investment initiatives. These investments have continued to generate internal revenue for the Scheme, which partly funds her operations.

Under his able watch, the Scheme has invested in Poultry farms;
hundreds of thousands of hectares of rice plantations and milling as well as feed mills in different parts of the country. He has equally resuscitated some previously abandoned NYSC water and bakery factories to consolidate on its investment profile.

With the returns yielded by these investments, coupled with the federal government subventions to the agency, payment of salaries and allowances to Corp members have been prompt and ceaseless. His favorable disposition to this has earned him the epaulet “Mr. Alert, Mr. Welfare” in all NYSC offices and formations across the nation.

With special reference to the corps members, he did not waste time upon resumption of office to implement the New National Minimum Wage of N33,000 (thirty-three thousand) as monthly allowance of serving corps members. He boosted the monthly allowance of corps members with an additional N3,000 (three thousand) to serve as incentives to corps members and encourage personal savings. He operates on Lailah Gifty Akita’s the doctrine that “If people are paid well, there should be no poverty.”

He has been in the forefront of relentlessly Lobbying State Governments and employers of the services of corps members to pay them additional monthly stipends. He has successful blighted the doctrine of discretionary payment of stipends to serving corps members through gentle persuasion of employers.

As a loving and caring father, he has demonstrated a relentless commitment to the health and well-being of the staffs and Corp members. For instance, at the outbreak of Covid-19 pandemic in Nigeria, Gen. Ibrahim ensured that the monthly allowances of corps members were paid without the usual clustering for clearance in order to forestall the spread of the disease.

His efforts in the fight against COVID-19 cannot be thrown under the carpet, we all are witnesses to how gallantly corps members rose to the national call via production and distribution of Nose masks, Sanitizers, ventilators, including distribution of palliatives to some communities and the aged amongst us.

Conversely, Gen. Ibrahim instantly complied with the directive of the Presidency by enlisting all serving corps members into the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS). He does not hesitate in approving medical bills and has expended huge resources on critical health needs of corps members by footing medical bills where necessary.

The unalterable truth is that Brig. Gen. Ibrahim has changed the fortunes of the NYSC amazingly. He is indeed, a national asset both in intellect and capacity to do things differently. But as usual, the Nigeria system have never been kind to such persons.

Thus, the bill by the House of Representatives calling for the scrapping of the Scheme is ill wind and not in the best interest of Nigerians, especially the Nigerian youth. It’s time for patriotic and right thinking Nigerians to speak out and ask the members of the House of Representatives especially the sponsors of such wicked and obnoxious bill if they are truly patriotic Nigerians.

Did they ever think of the effect such action would have not only on the economy of the country if upon graduation, there is nothing to keep them occupied, we all saw how crime escalated whilst the universities were on strike. Our leaders need to stop toiling with the lives of our youths.

BMO alleges plots by Ex-Nigerian President to force Buhari out of Power before 2023

0

The Buhari Media Organisation (BMO) has alleged that a former civilian president and is planning to instigate an uprising to force the resignation of President Muhammadu Buhari under the guise of ’eminent persons.’

BMO warned the former president and his co-travellers to quickly perish the thought and save the country from avoidable constitutional crisis and civil unrest.

In a statement signed by its Chairman Niyi Akinsiju and Secretary Cassidy Madueke, the pro-Buhari group lampooned the conspirators for their recourse to unconstitutional means to force the resignation of President Buhari, describing the move as reckless and anti-Nigeria.

“Our highly reliable security sources have informed us of the determination of the former President to go ahead with a plan to cause disaffection in the country through a planned conference of so-called eminent Nigerians. While the Conference ostensibly aims to review the state of the nation, we can authoritatively confirm that it is actually a premeditated plan to create confusion in the polity by calling President Buhari to resign after a supposed vote of no confidence.”

“Our Security sources said the worries over this latest move by the former leader is not so much about the illegality of the planned declaration but the anarchical mindset behind it, especially given the growing resurgence of  military putsch in the West African sub-region. Any appearance of national confusion, even if scripted without any basis, could fuel unreasoned confusion.”

“We, therefore, call on Nigerians to be wary of manoeuvres by people who are desperate to erode the foundation of our hard-fought democracy to further the agenda of a desperate, bumptious and self-serving group of elites besotted with power to the point that they are ready to throw the country into a contrived pandemonium to remain relevant”.
