Otukpo: George Alli and the performance mystery

0
One year is passing out in few days from now since the Inauguration of the Executive Chairmen in Benue State and some Chairmen are acting like they were just sworn in today, crawling in an absolute confusion on either how to run an office or singing there is no money till their time will elapse.
However, one man that his name is synonymous to performance Rt. Hon. Alli kept proven others wrong with an unclear mystery of performance of how he source funds enough to stand out among his contemporaries.
And I kept asking; is it not the same State allocations that others too collect or could it be that he has a Political will for his people and others do not? Rhetoric.
Yet, again he has done the uncommon in their current dispensation in office now. By releasing Constituency development funds to all the 13 Ward Councillors.
Th picture details here is the instantaneous implementation of such project that the funds were released in few days in Ugboju/Otahe Council Ward and the work is been supervised by the Hon. Jimmy Nart.
Indeed some people when in office can make leadership so easygoing and so excited to keep watching. But, some people can be so annoying and disgusting.
Of course am not from Otukpo but his impactful projects speaks volumes across his place for all eyes to see and applaud at all times.
I said this before that OTUKPO People are very lucky for this uncommon Chairman that is so outstanding anytime among others. Both in security and infrastructures.
I put this here to encourage him to sustain this ceaselessly effort in leaving his foot print in the sand of time. It is the best legacy than accumulation of wealth.
Thank you, RT. Hon. George Alli!

NYSC denies shunning applications by southern medical corps members in the north

0

The National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) has denied rejecting application by Southern medical corps members seeking redeployment.

According to a statement on Sunday, NYSC said the report is a  misrepresentation of facts, adding that the exercise is carried out based on two grounds, namely; marital and health grounds.

Read full statement below:

The attention of NYSC Management has been drawn to a story with the above caption, making the rounds on the social media. The write-up is a misrepresentation of facts.

In accordance with the Relocation Policy of the Scheme, the exercise is carried out based on two grounds, namely; Marital and Health grounds.

Relocation on the ground of marriage is applicable only to female Corps Members. On the ground of health, the Corps Member’s medical history must be presented, with a written application.

It is imperative to state that in NYSC, all lives matter, just like the Director-General has emphasised on so many fora. The safety-and-well-being of Corps Members and members of staff remains of paramount importance to the Corps.

However, Corps Members at all times must also be security conscious and never treat their safety with levity, by unduly putting themselves in harm’s way through risky behaviours.

Rest assured, the Scheme in all matters on deployment of Corps members, relies strictly on the advisories from the security agencies.

It is therefore advisable for clarifications to be sought from the Scheme on issues pertaining to its operations, to avoid the error of inaccurate reportage, or outright spread of falsehood and misinformation.

Israel: End of the road for Benjamin Netanyahu as Bennett steps in

0

A motley alliance of Israeli parties on Sunday ousted Benjamin Netanyahu, the country’s longest-serving prime minister, and formed a new government in a seismic shift in the country’s turbulent politics.

Naftali Bennett, a right-wing Jewish nationalist and former tech millionaire, was to take over at the helm of the eight-party bloc, united only by their shared disdain for the hawkish right-wing leader known as Bibi.

Netanyahu, 71, in typically combative style, vowed shortly before his defeat that “if it’s our destiny to be in the opposition, we’ll do so with our heads high until we take down this bad government and return to lead the country our way”.

Beloved as “King Bibi” by his right-wing supporters and condemned as the “crime minister” by his critics, Netanyahu has long been the dominant, and increasingly divisive, figure in Israeli politics.

But on Sunday, a vote in the Knesset legislature following weeks of intense political drama ended his government with a razor-thin majority of 60 to 59 in the 120-seat chamber.

In Tel Aviv’s Rabin Square, Netanyahu’s opponents broke out in cheers and launched into an evening of joyous celebrations, having rallied in recent days with “Bye bye Bibi” placards.

Netanyahu, who is battling corruption charges in an ongoing trial he dismisses as a conspiracy, has been the dominant Israeli politician of his generation, having also served a previous three-year term in the 1990s.

His supporters have hailed him as a strong defender of Israel who has been tough on arch foe Iran, but also struck a series of historic normalisation deals with several Arab nations last year.

Being ousted from the top job will leave Netanyahu more exposed to his legal woes, because it denies him the chance to push through parliament changes to basic laws that could give him immunity.

Bennett, a former defence minister under Netanyahu, vowed to keep Israel safe from Iran, promising that “Israel won’t let Iran have nuclear weapons” — a goal the Islamic republic denies pursuing.

Netanyahu, true to his reputation as Israel’s “Mr Security”, charged that “Iran is celebrating” the launch of what he charged would be a “dangerous” and weak left-wing government.

The improbable alliance emerged weeks after an 11-day war between Israel and Hamas, the Islamist group that rules the Palestinian enclave of Gaza, and following inter-communal violence in Israeli cities with significant Arab populations.

Netanyahu, who long ago earned a reputation as Israel’s ultimate political survivor, in his final days in office tried to peel off defectors, hoping to deprive the nascent coalition of its wafer-thin legislative majority, to no avail.

Redeployment of Corps Members remains based on health and marital grounds –NYSC

…dispels reports it shuns request to redeploy Corps Members from North over insecurity

The National Youth Service Corps NYSC says redeployment of Corps Members have remained based on marital and health grounds in accordance with the Relocation Policy of the Scheme.

The NYSC Management in a statement made available to Television Nigerian reacting to a malicious publication making the rounds on the social media with the caption, “NYSC Shuns Applications By Southern Medical Corps Members Who “Desperately” Want to Redeploy From North Due to Insecurity” said, the write-up is a misrepresentation of facts.

“In accordance with the Relocation Policy of the Scheme, the exercise is carried out based on two grounds, namely; Marital and Health grounds.

Re- 1,500 Christian Killed in 6 Months in Nigeria

0

By Ernest Adadu

While taking a vivid look at the article being published on the spiteful statements made by the immediate past United States Secretary of State and former Director of the Central Intelligence Agency , Mike Pompeo, all I saw was nothing but a tool (Pompeo) that is craving for relevance, and being used by the news agency to propagate pernicious propaganda aimed at the heart of Nigeria’s unity by creating extreme religious bigotry among the peaceful citizens, and to also disrupt President Muhammadu Buhari’s administration.

The article written by Mike Pompeo on the 10th of June is nothing but a tool aimed at breeding discord and blindly criticizing the patriotic leaders of our dear country Nigeria. It is nothing but false political propaganda created to serve no good deed.

He stated that at least 1,500 Christians have been killed in Nigeria in the last six months. This is an awful fabrication of facts. Yes, there are several issues of insecurity rocking the nation, but it is not nearly as bad as Mike Pompeo paints it to be. It is shameful for him to have stated such false facts without providing proof or a source of reference.

I was perplexed to my very core when I read what was written in the fallacious article, as it was obvious that Mike Pompeo wished to blindly attack the Nigerian Government without cause or reason, and I asked myself, “WHY?”.

It is remarkable to know that the level of insecurity in Nigeria has drastically reduced overtime. The alarming Boko haram insurgency has been dealt with in a pragmatic approach taken by President Muhammadu Buhari. Many successes have been recorded under his leadership as he has been steadfast in the discharge of his duty, and providing aid to civil authority.

The issue of Muslims fighting Christians is a matter that has been present throughout history from the 7th century. The matter has encouraged a variety of views throughout history, but greeting the matter with the idiosyncrasy of condemning one party over the other is one that breeds hatred and hostility. Owing to the delicate nature of such a matter, it would have been wise for Pompeo to guard his statements regarding the killings of Christians in Nigeria.

Nigeria is on the edge presently, and statements that would further encourage discord and hostility between the two major religions in the country should be avoided.

It was myopic of Mike Pompeo not to have pointed out the fact that Christians are not the only ones being slaughtered in the country. Several faithful Muslims have also been killed in various parts of the country. It is obvious that his intents are born out of mischief.

He also failed to point out the fact that these acts were carried out by terrorists and bandits who do not discriminate when they kill. They do not care about what group or religion their victims belong to. They carry out their acts without mercy, no matter who you are.

I strongly admit and concur that any government that cannot discharge this basic obligation of Protecting Lives and Property, losses any iota of legitimacy. President Muhammadu Buhari has been fervent in his handling of security issues in Nigeria that has led to massive killing and wanton destruction of property across the country, and making every region habitable to everyone irrespective of their religious view as opposed to what Pompeo insinuated.

In addressing the challenge to the survival of religion tolerance in Nigeria, President Muhammadu Buhari made it pertinent to consider, and also worked on security issues and problems that have affected or capable of affecting the attitude, confidence and cooperation of all groups and segments that make up the Nigerian federation, without leaving out the necessity to explore the gaps and gray areas in the national constitution that are responsible for various religion problems and crises.

However, knowing that sensitive issues like that of religion intolerance is a weaponry that has fostered National and International Terrorist attacks on many Nations, Pompeo should have known better to verify every information gotten, or seen on the internet before relying on a creek in-house media as a source of verifiable information. This act makes a man like him reeks of low intelligence.

He also accused the Nigerian government of “downplaying the attacks and characterizing them as conflicts between herders and farmers rather than as religiously motivated acts of terror.” One can never call a spade a bucket. We have all seen that there is no religious motivation behind the killings in Nigeria. These killings are merely carried out by merciless bandits and terrorists who know nothing about Islam or Christianity.

Pompeo cited the case of Leah Sharibu who has remained in captivity in the hands of the Boko Haram sect due to the fact that she refused to convert to Islam. He claimed that the young lady has remained in captivity over three years without consequence. By this, he insinuates that the Nigerian government failed to act merely because she is a Christian who refused to convert to Islam. This is an odoriferous innuendo that Mike Pompeo has so witlessly expressed.

He also made other claims about the matter, one of which he gave a self-declared statistic stating that Christians murdered in the country had risen to 60 percent in 2020 and was most likely going to get worse in recent times. This he stated without providing concrete evidence to his claim.

We should educate Pompeo and help his amnesia about his statement on the presence of radical Islamic jihadist groups in northern Nigeria.
Firstly, he should know that radical Islamic jihadist groups are all over the world. Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) is all over African countries and have registered their presence through different attacks.

Has he forgotten so soon?
The memorable 9/11 attack on the twin tower by Alqueada, that was masterminded and executed on American soil?

The numerous attacks by Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL), also known as the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS) or Daesh, which is detailed as follows:

A car bomb in Iraq that killed 28 Shia pilgrims and injured 60 others as they were returning from Karbala, while in the capital Baghdad a roadside bomb exploded near a minibus, killing four pilgrims and wounding 15.

A suicide bomber exploded targeting civilians in a commercial shop on a busy tourist destination and business center in Turkey, March 2016.

ISIL took responsibility for a stabbing that killed a French police officer and his companion in France, June 2016.

29-year-old Omar Mateen killed 49 people and wounded 53 others in a mass shooting inside Pulse, a gay nightclub in Orlando, Florida in United State, June 2016.

Between November 2–3, five were killed in Stadttempel , Vienna , including the perpetrator. The Vienna Police Department confirmed that the attacker was an Islamic State sympathizer, and that the attack was motivated by Islamic extremism. This happened in Austria, November 2020.

Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant targeted Shia Muslims on 21 January 2021 in a clothing market in Tayaran Square, Baghdad. US, UN, EU and the Pope condemn the attack calling it a senseless act of violence. Iraq, January 2021

Attacks where everywhere, United Kingdom, Sweden, Spain, Canada, etc which were dated to 2021.
However, with the above references and many more, should we now conclude just like Mr Mike, that all these attacks are on Christians, and every President in the attacked country supports religion intolerance?

It is obvious that Mike Pompeo’s statements were borne out of hatred for the Islamic religion. It is important for him to realize that words are powerful. If he has any problem with the Islamic religion, he should keep it to himself and not sow seeds of discord in other countries. If he has nothing good to say about the country, it will be in his best interest to keep silent on the matter and focus on his own country.

At the end of his article, Mike Pompeo issued several lame threats to the federal government of the country. He stated that if the Nigerian government failed to carry out swift actions to put an end to the persecution of Christians, there would be consequences in the form of sanctions and increased diplomatic pressure.

The Buhari led administration has been working tirelessly to safeguard the lives and properties of all Nigerian citizens no matter the religion you practice. It is an insult on Mike Pompeo’s part to disregard the efforts put in by the current administration and try to create unnecessary agitation in the country.

At this point, sanctions and diplomatic pressure isn’t what Nigeria needs. What the country needs is support from other countries. Mike Pompeo would do well to call for support in the country rather that criticize its leaders and proclaim unnecessary threats.

President Muhammadu Buhari is efficiently leading the fight against insecurity in Nigeria along with the service chiefs and the Nigerian Military. Let us all join hands to support them rather than throw incessant criticisms at them.

Nigerian CSOs Ask African Commission into Invalidate Twitter Ban

0

Two civil society organisations — Global Rights and Exploit Initiative to Citizens Development have implemented to the African Commission on Human and People’s Rights in Banjul, the Gambia into invalidating the Twitter ban by the Nigerian authorities as well as any measures or steps taken to implement the ban.

The groups also asked the commission to issue an order directing the federal government to afford just satisfaction to them by way of damages for the losses suffered by them due to the ban.

Further, they requested the commission to hold that Nigeria, by imposing a ban on the use of Twitter has violated Nigerians’ right to freedom of expression as supplied by the African Charter on Human and Peoples’ Rights.

Nigeria is a state party to the Charter, having deposited its instrument of ratification of the Charter on 22 July 1983.
The Charter is also a part of Nigeria’s law having been domesticated from the African Charter (Ratification and Enforcement) Act of 1983.

The applicants, therefore, requested the commission to declare that the Twitter ban purchased on June 4, 2021, amounted to an internet shutdown or disturbance incompatible with the charter.
They prayed the commission to announce that the ban and also the threat to prosecute anyone utilizing Twitterviolate Articles 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 9, 10, 11, 13, 15, 16, 17, 22 and 26 of the charter.

Other reliefs sought from the applicants are a statement that the threat of the national government issued on or about 5 June 2021, to violate all or any users of Twitter within its territory is an abuse of power, which includes a chilling effect on and simplifies the practice of the rights guaranteed in Articles 5, 9, 10, 11, 13, 15 and 17 of the African Charter on Human and Peoples’ Rights.

A statement that the order issued from the Respondent State on or about 7 June 2021, to all media houses to deactivate their Twitter handles and quit tweeting violates Articles 9, 10, 11, 13, 16 and 17of the African Charter on Human and Peoples’ Rights.

A statement that the failure of the Respondent State to maintain the courts and keep them open because 6 April 2021, is a denial of the right of their applicants to local treatments and violates Articles 1 and 26 of the African Charter on Human and Peoples’ Rights.
A declaration that by reason of the offences aforesaid, the Respondent State is in breach of its obligations under Article 1 of the African Charter on Human and Peoples’ Rights.

There are hurdles the applicants must scale prior to the commission can hear their application, one of which is that they must have exhausted local remedies prior to coming to the commission.

To scale those hurdles, the applicants contended that as in the time they filed the communicating, courts in Nigeria were closed as a consequence of the strike embarked upon by the Judiciary Staff Union of Nigeria.

In accordance with Rule 100 of the African Charter on Human and Peoples’ Rights, the applicants insisted that the commission for provisional measures against Nigeria pending the determination of the communication.

Among such measures asked for by the candidates is to get the commission to stop the government from arresting or prosecuting them, their staff, employees or associates or taking any actions to impair their faith on grounds of the usage of Twitter pending the conclusion of the present complaint or the lifting of the ban on Twitter by Nigeria.
They also requested the commission to refer the complaint against Nigeria to the African Court on Human and Peoples’ Rights for determination.

Nigeria deposited with the Commission of the African Union its instrument of ratification of this Protocol to the African Charter on Human and Peoples’ Rights on the Establishment of the African Court on Human and Peoples’ Rights on 9 June 2004 (hereafter called”the African Court Protocol”.

However, Nigerian citizens cannot file a situation directly in the African Court on Human and People’s Rights, since Nigeria has not made a declaration under Article 34(6) of the African Court’s Protocol requiring the competence of this court to receive cases from people and non-governmental organisations.

However, the applicants claimed the Internet disruptions violated the right to get information and free expression (Article 9(1)-(2)), the right to freedom of association (Article 10), and the right to freedom of assembly (Article 11).

In accordance with them, freedom from censorship, including independence from filtering or blocking of the Internet, is essential for the practice of freedom of expression.

“The right of access to information (Article 9(1)) is also an important part of the right to freedom of expression since it’s needed as a way to construct opinions and communicate them. Blocking, filtering and censorship, in addition to the possibility of criminal prosecution, limit access to information and stifle online debate. State manipulation of the data that citizens are allowed to see (rather than view ) online also impedes the right of access to precise information”, they added.

The applicants contended further that disrupting access to the Web services hinders the entire enjoyment of a broad range of basic rights and freedoms, especially the appropriate Articles 2, 3, 5, 9, 10, 11, 13(1) and 16 of the African Charter.

They stated: “The Twitter ban negatively impacts on lives by preventing individuals from communicating, damaging businesses and livelihoods. In practical terms, it affects most negatively on the weakest people, who are less able to afford alternative or more costly way of communicating hence creating unjustifiable discrimination, promoting inequality, and unlawfully impinging on the dignity of persons contrary to Articles 2, 3 and 4 of the African Charter.”

In its resolution on the Right to Freedom of Information and Expression Online in Africa, the commission recognises the role of the Internet in advancing human and peoples’ rights in Africa.

The applicants argued that “The current ban on Twitter at Nigeria obviously contravenes the Declaration of Principles on Freedom of Expression and Access to Information in Africa, issued with this honourable commission, based on that states shall not interfere with the right of people to seek, receive and impart information through any means of communicating and electronic technologies, through measures like the elimination, blocking or filtering of content, unless this interference is justifiable and compatible with international human rights law and standards”

President Buhari: Nigerian government cannot afford the amount of funds needed to revive the nation’s educational system

0

President Muhammadu Buhari has stated the Nigerian government cannot afford the amount of funds needed to revive the nation’s educational system. Buhari also stated the competition for capital had become keener because of the current gain in the number of tertiary institutions in Nigeria. The president spoke on Saturday at the 49th convocation ceremony of the University of Nigeria, Nsukka.

He explained the fiscal situation was worsened by the global economic recession, which also affected the national revenue. Buhari, who was represented in the ceremony by the Minister of State for Education, Emeka Nwajiuba, nevertheless, said his administration was committed to addressing the requirements of tertiary institutions through budgetary allocations to the Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFUND).

“I am optimistic that the drive to increase the national economy will provide the government with additional resources to enhance financing for the education system,” he explained. The president said the universities must also leverage other funding sources, such as alumni, friends, the private sector, institutional linkages, and study grants, to attract additional revenue such as infrastructure, research, and advancement. “We should also address the issues of poor work ethics and the albatross of prolonged and recurrent industrial actions by the staff of universities,

” the president stated. Buhari advised academic institutions throughout the country to embark on the kind of innovative research which might help boost production and diversify the market.

“Our universities must continue to emphasise instruction in entrepreneurship so school leavers and graduates can become job creators instead of continuing job seekers,” he explained. On his part, Minister of Transportation, Chibuike Amaechi, stated the authorities must attempt to address the perennial struggle of poverty and inequality in the nation or risk losing the youth to crime. Amaechi, who delivered the 49th convocation lecture of this university, said that the series of protests held across the country of late, such as #ENDSARS, was a consequence of increasing poverty and disaffection on the part of the taxpayers.

“Although the current government has introduced a number of programmes to help eradicate poverty, such as Transportation Track for individuals who were into the transportation business, many Nigerians are yet to be raised out of poverty,” the ministry stated. He stated that policies ought to be focused on the rural majority, and targeted at providing the citizens a fantastic lifestyle and lifting them from poverty.
