2023.: CAN advocates for a Christian president

0

The Youth Wing of the Christian Association of Nigeria (YOWICAN) recommended on Saturday that the country’s next President be a Christian to ensure balance in the country’s leadership.

Additionally, YOWICAN stated that rotating the presidency would promote equity, unity, and peace.

This was revealed during Saturday’s NEC meeting at the National Christian Centre.

National Executive Members, Zonal Leaders, State Leaders (drawn from the federation’s 36 states plus the FCT) and representatives from CAN’s blocs/denominations attended the meeting.

It urged bandits and kidnappers to renounce evil and put an end to ongoing kidnappings and murders.

Additionally, the Christian association pledged to work with Muslims and the Nigeria Interreligious Council (NIREC) on peacebuilding.

This was stated in a communique issued following the conclusion of YOWICAN’s National Executive Council (NEC) meeting and read by the organization’s National Chairman, Belusochukwu Enwere.

Enwere stated, “As such, the election of a Christian president in 2023 will be a true expression of Nigeria’s equity and justice.” The next president, who should take office in 2023, should be a Christian, as the current administration’s president is a Muslim, and thus the president should rotate between Christians and Muslims to ensure that Nigeria’s leadership is balanced. We have capable Christian leaders who are capable of representing and managing the country’s affairs. We encourage our leaders to engage fully in politics in order to produce a good president for Nigeria.

“That the current leadership of YOWICAN pledges her undying loyalty and solidarity to the deserving leadership of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) under the capable leadership of His Eminence, Rev. Dr. Samson Supo Ayokunle (NIREC).

“YOWICAN laments the rising rate of insecurity in Nigeria, but applauds the government’s and security agencies’ efforts to combat the nefarious activities of bandits, killer herdsmen, and insurgents, among others.

“YOWICAN, in carrying out Christian tenets and faith, strongly believes in peaceful coexistence; however, this piety should not be interpreted as cowardice; thus, kidnappers, bandits, killer herdsmen, terrorists, and unknown gunmen should not push Christian youths to the point of considering self-defence strategies as a last resort.

“Despite the progress made thus far in combating crime, YOWICAN observes an urgent need to halt the rising tide of attacks, killings, and destruction of innocent citizens’ lives, properties, farmlands, and livelihoods in Northern states, particularly in Christian communities in Southern Kaduna.”

The CAN youth demanded the immediate release of all abductees, particularly those held captive at Bethel Baptist High School in Kaduna State.

“YOWICAN demands the immediate release of all abductees, particularly the students of Bethel Baptist High School in Kaduna State. We call on both the Federal and Kaduna State governments to expedite their release.”

Igboho Confronts FG, Demands N500bn in Damages for Residence Invasion

Igboho Confronts FG

IBADAN – Sunday Adeyemo, popularly known as Sunday Igboho, a Yoruba Nation agitator who is currently on trial in the Republic of Benin, has filed a N500 billion suit against the Department of State Services (DSS) and the Attorney General of the Federation (AGF), Abubakar Malami (SAN), for the invasion of his Ibadan residence on July 1, 2021.

This was contained in an application filed on his behalf by his lawyers at the Oyo State High Court on Friday for an order enforcing his fundamental human rights.

According to his lawyers, the suit was brought pursuant to Order 11 of the 2009 fundamental human rights enforcement procedure rules and under the court’s inherent jurisdiction as preserved by Section 6 of the 1999 Constitution.
It will be recalled that between 1 a.m. and 3 a.m. on July 1, DSS operatives invaded Igboho’s residence in Ibadan’s Soka neighborhood, arrested 12 people, and killed two others in a gun duel.

The DSS paraded the suspects and ammunition purportedly recovered from Igboho’s residence.

However, the embattled Yoruba Nation activist denied keeping ammunition in his home, claiming that the secret police were attempting to entrap him.

Igboho is seeking in the suit, through his lawyer, Chief Yomi Alliyu (SAN), orders declaring the invasion a violation of his fundamental human rights, property damage as a violation of his fundamental right to peacefully own property and wealth, and N500 billion in damages, among other things.

The amount was described as “exemplary and/or aggravated damages for violating the applicant’s fundamental rights in the course of an illegal and/or malicious invasion of his residence located, lying, and being at Igboho Villa. No.1, Dalag Street, Off Soka Bus Stop, Soka Area, Off Lagos-Ibadan Expressway, Ibadan.”

Igboho also seeks a declaration from the court that it was “oppressive, malicious, arbitrary, and grossly unconstitutional for the 2nd and 3rd respondents to invade the applicant’s residence located, lying, and being at Igboho Villa, 1, Dalag Street, Off Soka Bus Stop, Soka Area, Off Lagos-Ibadan Expressway, Ibadan without announcing their identities and requesting the applicant to open his gate but

Additionally, it urged the court to declare that “the respondents’ determination to prevent the applicant from propagating his belief in association with other like-minded individuals in creating a Yoruba Nation and/or Oduduwa Republic for his Indigenous Yoruba people and hunting him down with a gun with the intent of arresting him dead or alive when he has not called for war to accomplish the same is a violation of his fundamental rights.”
He sought an injunction prohibiting the respondents from arresting, harassing, or disturbing him in any way that might violate his fundamental human rights.

NIMASA strongly condemns the abduction of five maritime workers in Rivers

0

NIMASA, the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency, condemned the abduction of eight Nigerians, five of whom were members of the Maritime Workers Union of Nigeria, MWUN.

Bashir Jamoh, the director-general of NIMASA, stated this in a statement issued Saturday in Lagos by the agency’s spokesman, Osagie Edward.

Mr Jamoh stated that the kidnapping occurred on Monday in Rivers State waters.

He expressed regret that the incident occurred at a time when the Nigerian maritime industry was making tremendous strides in the country’s maritime security sector and was being lauded for its achievements both locally and internationally.
“I have spoken with Comrade Adewale Adeyanju, President-General of the Nigerian Maritime Workers Union, to convey the agency’s outrage over the incident and unequivocal condemnation of this heinous development.
“I also assured him of the agency’s continued support during this trying time until the abducted maritime workers are safely returned to their families and the industry,” he added.

He noted that the MWUN President, who stated that his team would be in the area of the incident by this weekend, welcomed NIMASA’s show of solidarity and support as a maritime family member.

Mr Jamoh stated that NIMASA was also monitoring the events and their Deep Blue assets, particularly the C4i and intelligence operations centers.

He stated that the public would be kept informed of progress in due course.

Mr Jamoh stated that the agency was aware of the presence of sea pirates and the activities of other marine criminals fleeing the intense heat in the nation’s territorial waters as a result of the Deep Blue Project’s enforcement.

He emphasized that the Deep Blue Project’s personnel would ensure that all waters in the coastal states were covered during their daily patrol in order to nip any criminal activity in the waterways and creeks in the bud.

Hamzat urges Nigerians to be part of electoral process

0

Lagos State Deputy Governor, Dr. Obafemi Hamzat on Saturday charged citizens to always be part of the electoral process.

Hamzat said this after casting his vote at Polling Unit 02, Ward D Oke Balogun, Epe.

He said citizens should always participate in the electoral process by making sure that they vote the right people into political offices at every election.

The deputy governor further noted that it was not right for people to complain about those that govern them when they fail to come out and vote in the candidates of their choice into various political posts during elections.

“Come out and vote. Don’t stay back and start complaining, be part of the process. If you are not part of the processes, you don’t have the moral right to complain, come out and vote for the people you want”, he said.

Enugu State Governor Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi has reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to following Federal Government guidelines and international best practices in the fight against Coronavirus Disease (COVID-19).

At the Government House in Enugu, Gov. Ugwuanyi inaugurated members of the Enugu State Project Steering Committee of the Nigeria COVID-19 Preparedness and Response Project (Co-PREP).

The governor, represented by Prof. Simon Uchenna Ortuanya, Secretary to the State Government (SSG), disclosed that the committee will oversee the implementation of Co-PREP projects at the state level, as well as review and approve the state’s Incident Action Plan (IAP) for transmission to the Project Coordinating Unit (PCU).

Prof. Ortuanya added that the steering committee, chaired by Commissioner for Health Dr Emmanuel Ikechukwu Obi, will also review progress reports and supervise the State Coordinating Unit (SCU) to ensure the project is implemented on time and to “ensure that financing from Nigeria Co-PREP complements financing from other sources and is efficiently utilized.”

He noted that while Enugu, like other states, has faced significant challenges since the pandemic’s outbreak, the SSG noted that Gov. Ugwuanyi’s administration has “built five COVID-19 isolation and treatment centers, established a 100-bed-space isolation center at the Enugu Medical Diagnostic Centre, and constructed an Infectious Diseases Specialist Hospital.”

Yiaga Africa Identifies Gaps and Improvements in the Lagos Local Government Elections.

0

Yiaga Africa, a non-governmental and non-profit organization, has released a summary of its findings following Saturday’s council elections in Lagos State’s 20 Local Government Areas (LGAs) and 37 Local Council Development Areas (LCDAs).

The organization stated that it deployed trained, accredited roving observers under the moniker “Watching the Vote” (WTV) to monitor the process in all 57 of the state’s councils.

Yiaga Africa noted in a statement issued in Lagos on Saturday that while 15 political parties will contest the election, an average of three political parties were reported to be on the ballot papers for both the LGA/LCDA Chairman and Council elections.

According to a statement signed by the organization’s Director of Programs and Board Member, Cynthia Mbamalu and Eze Nwagwu, respectively, “While there was reasonable compliance with the state government’s no-movement directive, voter turnout was abysmally low across the LGAs/LCDAs, with voters absent in some polling units as of 11 a.m.”

“The findings in this statement are based on information provided by WTV observers regarding set-up, voting, and accreditation at polling units.

“Late poll opening and deployment of polling materials: As of 8:30 a.m., Yiaga Africa WTV observers reported seeing no polling official in 61 of the polling units they visited. The late opening and commencement of polling stations was a common occurrence throughout the state.

“Mushin LGA, in particular, recorded a late deployment. By 8:16 a.m., election officials were still awaiting deployment to their assigned polling units. By 10:00 a.m., only 17 of the polling units visited had polling officials present and were nearing completion of the set-up necessary to begin the accreditation and voting process.

“Polling officials were deployed in the anticipated manner: As required by the LASIEC election guidelines, the majority of polling units visited had an average of two polling officials present. Additionally, women were deployed as polling officials; at least one out of every two polling officials was a woman.

“Election essential materials were deployed adequately: WTV monitored the presence of essential materials in polling units, including the voter register, polling official stamp, voting cubicle, ink pad, ballot boxes, incident form, and polling unit booklet.

“These and numerous other materials were visible in the majority of the polling units that were opened. However, according to WTV observers, the majority of Smart Card Readers were not fully charged. Additionally, reports indicate that some polling units visited did not have Smart Card Readers.

“Security personnel deployment: WTV observed security officers from the Nigerian Police Force and/or the NSCDC in the majority of polling units visited. For example, WTV observed the presence of over ten security officials in Polling Unit 039 Wesley Primary School.

“Observers reported the presence of the Lagos Neighborhood Safety Corps in several polling units (LNSC). However, in Ward C Surulere and Lawanson, Mushin Local Government Area, the majority of Polling Units lacked security personnel as of 11 a.m. Additionally, a few security personnel were spotted on Lagos state’s streets.

“The majority of political parties did not send party agents to the polls: only APC and PDP party agents were visible in the majority of polling units visited. In the majority of polling units visited, APC and PDP party agents were visible, while other party agents were visible in a few polling units.

“There was no strict adherence to the COVID-19 Protocol: While WTV observed the distribution of hand sanitizers and handheld infrared thermometers throughout the polling units, there was no enforcement of their use. Poll workers and voters failed to follow the COVID-19 non-pharmaceutical safety protocol and physical distancing.

“Misconduct at Polling Units: WTV observers reported that voters in a few polling units in Ward B Badagry LGA were intimidated, harassed, and assaulted during accreditation and voting.”

Yiaga Africa noted several reported critical incidents, including confusion over the ballot’s inclusion of a political party’s name. “In Shomolu LGA, there was violent disruption of the accreditation and voting processes across polling units; this was exacerbated by confusion over the inclusion of a party name on the ballot.

“On the ballot, the name YP was printed, which is not one of the legally recognized political parties. In a few of the polling units visited, supporters of the YPP protested their party’s omission from the ballot and urged voters to boycott the election.

“Attack on WTV Observer: In PU 008, Ward B Badagry, an observer was beaten for videotaping a party agent attempting to snatch a ballot box,” the statement read.

Mother of two seeks assistance after being abandoned by her husband to replace a broken hip.

0

DAMIAN DURUIHEOMA examines the pitiable and agonising plight of a 26-year-old mother of two and her thorny path to a normal life, having been abandoned by her husband and is now in need of N6 million to undergo hip replacement after a car accident.
Nenna Ogbonna Chimekwa was full of life and hoped for a brighter future when she met her husband, Wordu Chima Chimekwa, a native of Umuodogwu in Emeohua Local Government Area of Rivers State a few years ago. It would seem, however, that things have turned upside down as she now lies helpless in her mother’s room, where she has to be aided to perform the simplest of tasks, including going to the toilet, having a bath or even shifting from one end of her bed to another.

Although she uses a set of crutches to support herself, to be taken to the hospital, her mother will have to use her hands to move the young woman’s legs. She is such a pathetic sight that no human being would see without being moved to pity. Her mother, Georgianna Ogbonna, a widow and part time teacher at Queen of the Holy Rosary College, Nsukka, is faced with a choice between giving up on Nnenna and seeing how much more she can do to restore her back to life.

Nnenna had been involved in a serious accident that claimed the lives of every other person in the vehicle on her way from Umuodogwu to Warri, where she used to buy the crayfish she sold in her village. The accident had affected her hip so badly that doctors at the National Orthopedic Hospital Enugu (NOHE) said it had to be replaced at the cost of between N5 million and N6 million.

The 26-year-old, who has been living with the pains and agony of the fracture since February, 2021, was discharged from the hospital to go and look for the money before treatment could commence.

It was learnt that she had contemplated taking her own life just to bring her suffering to an end once and for all, but her mother, a major source of her living, has continued to encourage her to be hopeful that help would come.

She told The Nation: “It was on 5th of February, 2021 when I was going to the market in Warri, Delta State, where I normally bought crayfish. I was travelling in Sienna bus and we had an accident at Ugheli. I was rushed to a hospital where I was told that all the other people in the vehicle had died.

“I was rushed to Ufoh hospital in Ugheli and the hospital referred me to the orthopedic hospital, but I could not go there because I had no money at all. The money with which I was going to the market was stolen at the scene of the accident.

“The people around decided to take me to a traditional bonesetter, and after spending one month there, I was discharged and given a set of crutches to walk with.

“I told them that I was having sharp pains and difficulty moving my legs, but the woman assured me that I would be fine after some time. Then, I was able to move a little bit in crutches with little assistance.

“When I got home, my mother, who came to pick me up, could not believe the sight of me. She said my hip bone was sticking out and that we should go to the hospital immediately. That was how we went to a private hospital where after another X-ray the doctors noticed that the bone was not in a good position.

“They said my hip bone had started gumming with my flesh and advised that something urgent be done to replace it.

“They said that if something is not done urgently, it may lead to a dangerous cancer that will need much more money to remove my leg entirely.

“So we were directed to come to the National Orthopedic Hospital Enugu where I was admitted and I was booked for surgery. I was admitted at Orthopedic Hospital Enugu on 18th of May and on 11th of June.

“After the surgery, the doctor asked us to go for CT scan and they discovered that my bone socket joint had been damaged and could not be repaired.

“They said they had tried to put the bone that was removed back into my bone socket joint but couldn’t because the place was damaged, so they referred me to another doctor that specialised on hip at the same hospital.

“After examining the CT scan, the doctor said that my hip joint was totally damaged. They said that if I go just for hip replacement, it might not work because my muscles were already weak.

“They advised me to look for between N5 million and N6 million so that if they put the hip replacement and it does not work, they will now do the second surgery for total hip replacement and that was the only option for me to walk again, if not I would remain bedridden and in constant pains like this.

“So, when no money was forthcoming from anywhere, the hospital asked that I should be discharged so that I could go home. Even the bill for the one we stayed in the hospital was paid by some people because we don’t have any money.”

My journey into marriage
Nnenna, an Nsukka indigene of Umujioha Ovoko community, Igbo-Eze South Local Government Area of Enugu State, had met her estranged husband in 2012 after she had written her senior school certificate exam. The man identified as Chimekwa, a final year student of the Department of Mechanical Engineering in the University of Nigeria Nsukka, had promised to train Nnenna in the university if she agreed to marry him.

Nnenna, desperate to gain admission into the university, having made all her papers in WAEC, agreed to that request.

She said: “My reason for agreeing to his proposal was the difficulty my mother passed through in order to source money for me to register for WAEC. In fact, nobody in this whole village agreed to help me out.

“Even after I agreed, Chimekwa made me to swear an oath never to leave him because, according to him, he had lost a lot in the past having trained many girls to the university with none of them agreeing to marry him after graduation. I told him I would have no problem marrying him provided I went to the university.

“Few months after he graduated, he invited me over to Port Harcourt where I was supposed to register for and write JAMB. Few months after my stay with him, I became pregnant for him.

“When it was time to register for JAMB, I reminded him but he said since I was pregnant, it would be too stressful for me to go to the university with pregnancy and that I could go to school even after giving birth to three children.

“I told him I would cope but he refused. At that point, I could not inform my mother that I was pregnant because he had not met with my family members to indicate interest.

“When I told his mother about my worries, she told me that their tradition does not permit marriage with a pregnant woman and that I should wait until I put to bed and they would come formally to my people.

“He actually came to my village after child birth with two of his friends and with drinks to let my people know that he wanted to marry me.

“In 2016, I gave birth to my second son and my husband changed totally. He started beating me and treating me like a slave. He finally left me in his village after the death of his mother and I was no longer hearing from him. I also didn’t know where he was living.

“If I called him, he would not pick my call and did not care about me or our children. Feeding became a big problem for me and my children and suddenly, my second child developed ill health that led to him convulsing almost every night.

“When I told him about it, he simply said it was something that should be treated traditionally.

“After enduring the disappointment and hardship, I decided to return home to my village where my mother would take care of my children while I looked for a business that would sustain us and, most importantly, take my son to the University of Nigeria Teaching Hospital, where a medical doctor recommended that I should take him for proper treatment of his ailment.

“Already, my son has been disfigured and cannot even talk at five years. Here in the village, most of his peers laugh at him and call him imbecile. That breaks my heart a lot because he wasn’t born like that.

“With the help of my mother, I was able to raise money to start crayfish business. I was actually managing to take care of my children and paying their school fees.

“I was hoping to raise up to between N100,000 and N200,000 to take my second son to the hospital. It was during one of the trips to Warri, Delta State that the accident occurred.

“Since the accident happened, they have had to stop school because I can’t do anything without assistance. They are the ones helping me to do certain things except bathing and going to toilet, which my mother helps me to do”.

Nnenna said all her efforts to reach out to her husband for the upkeep of her children had remained futile.

“My little son has called him on phone to beg for a visit but he told my son that his new wife would not like him to visit us. That was the last time he spoke with us.”

Nnenna appealed to good spirited and well-meaning Nigerians to help her to walk again by paying the N6 million for her hip replacement.

The medical director of the National Orthopedic Hospital Enugu was not available for comments when The Nation visited the hospital. But the head of the department of Medical Social Works, Ebede Ngozi, confirmed the incident, describing Nnenna’s case as pathetic.

She said total hip replacement costs a lot of money and not an expenditure the hospital could afford for free at the moment.

The ‘Asiwaju Bola Tinubu Monumental Civic Centre’ was commissioned yesterday in the Ifako-Ijaye Local Council Development Area of Lagos State amid much fanfare.

Apostle Oloruntoba Oke, the outgoing chairman, unveiled the edifice, which serves as the new council secretariat, as part of his final duties in office. Two large event halls, an e-library, an ICT center, and a youth office are all located in the heart of the city.

Tinubu, the former governor of Lagos State and National Leader of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), was deemed deserving of the honor by the council members for his contributions to grassroots administration in Lagos State and the advancement of democracy in the country.

Oke explained that the massive structure in Idiagbon, Ifako, will solve the local government’s acute housing problems that have plagued it since its inception over thirty years ago.

Politicians, government officials, market women, and youths all attended the ceremony.

Oke described the Centre as a “jinx breaker,” emphasizing that its commissioning was a watershed moment in grassroots administration.
