An Ekiti State member of the House of Representatives, Femi Bamisile, on Sunday, harped on the need for the All Progressives Congress, to strengthen its internal democracy and ensure credible primaries to elect party leaders at the Ward, Local Government and State levels.

This, he said, was necessary in order to pave way for the election of a credible standard bearer for the 2022 Ekiti Governorship poll.

Bamisile, who also serves as Chairman, House Committee on Federal Roads Maintenance Agency, urged the party leadership to take steps to avoid the pitfalls of the 2018 primary which almost destroyed the party in the state.

He spoke in an interview with journalists in Ado Ekiti. Bamisile said, “I have made myself clear that the processes for the ward, local government and state congresses must be democratic. The idea of someone staying somewhere and concocting the list by proxy won’t work. Democracy should be allowed.

“We shouldn’t allow anything that can cause some people to be an operating faction which may cause unnecessary litigation. We have to avert a repeat of what happened in Zamfara in 2019 where APC lost all positions it had won due to perceived illegalities and factional crisis.”

The federal lawmaker further said, “We held a stakeholders’ meeting on Friday, July 2, 2021, where our leader, Governor Kayode Fayemi, assured that everybody would be involved in the coming congresses.”

The Chairman, Kwara North Stakeholders Consultative Forum, Abdullahi Lade, has said that it would be the turn of the zone to produce the next governor of the state in 2023.

He said this while addressing journalists, in Ilorin over the weekend, after a peace meeting of members of the Peoples Democratic Party in the Central Senatorial District, led by Oba Ajara.

Lade said, “Already, the journey has started and we have begun consultations to politicians across all divides in the state so as to achieve the goal.

“The people of Kwara North Senatorial District have paid their dues to the people of other two senatorial and this is the time they should be allowed to lead the state.”

Lade, who insisted on equity, justice and fairness noted that Kwara North is pleading for understanding from the two other senatorial districts to produce the next governor, quoting the Yoruba adage that three stones should not throw away the soup pot.

He said, “We don’t want to be left behind in the power equation. It has to do with grabbing political power. By calculation Kwara central got its first four years through the late Mohammed Lawal, then eight years from Dr Bukola Saraki, so the central had twelve years and Kwara south had eight years through Alhaji Abdulfatah Ahmed.

“The Yorubas say three stones do not throw away pot soup, we are three in number, they should allow us in Kwara north. We realised that if we don’t cry out that they should think about equity, justice and fairness and allow Kwara north to produce the next governor irrespective of party affiliation.”

Earlier, the chairman, Kwara central senatorial of PDP, Oba Ajara told the forum to be watchful in their demand so that those that are not part of them would spoil their agitation.

He said, “It is a normal agitation but the agitation would need to pass due process before it can be achieved.”

Akinyemi, who stated this in an open letter addressed  to  Buhari, said the move would reduce the tension in the country

The monarch’s three-page letter was titled “open letter to  president Muhammadu Buhari : the need for the emergence of a Nigerian president of South Eastern extraction comes 2023”.

Akinyemi urged Buhari to  adopt   dialogue rather than clamping down on the secessionist agitators in the country.

According to him the tension in Nigeria can  be traced to alleged  injustice and inequality from the South East .

He said the tension will disappear if other regions in the country could rally round the South East to produce the next president .

The monarch said, “I want to state without equivocation that the entire security challenges bedeviling this country from the South-East will disappear within a twinkle of an eye, if and only if, all sections of this great country can come together to pave the way for the emergence of a Nigerian President of Igbo extraction in the year 2023.

“In the light of this, I want to appeal that your excellency should use a dialogue rather than clamping down on the secessionist agitators in the country, especially in the South-East which now looks like a war zone.”

Stakeholders of the ruling All Progressives Congress in Nasarawa State has adopted the consensus method for the forthcoming party congresses to elect officials of the party in the state.

The decision was taken on Monday in Lafia at a meeting between Governor Abdullahi Sule and stakeholders of the party.

 Sule said the party had severally conducted peaceful elections in the state and pleaded for a peaceful conduct of the party’s congresses.

The Governor pledged his commitment to ensuring that the forthcoming congresses would produce leaders who will lead the party to victory in their respective wards.

He, therefore, directed all his appointees to go back to their electoral wards and ensure a hitch free congress.

He said Senator Abdullahi Adamu will coordinate Nasarawa West Senatorial District, while Senator Umaru Tanko Al-Makura, would handle  Nasarawa South.

Sule added that Senator Godiya Akwashiki, would coordinate the Nasarawa North Senatorial District.

The SPC Chairman In the state, Dr John Mamman, said the purpose of the meeting was to brainstorm on the forthcoming congresses of the party.

A political pressure group under the aegis of,  “Conscious Political Forum,” has described Alhaji Shuaibu Abubakar-Audu, one of the sons of a former governor of Kogi state, the late Prince Abubakar Audu, as a political unifier, who is capable of turning the fortune of the state around.

The group stated this in a press statement signed by its Chairman and Secretary, Mr John Omeiza and Alhaji Ibrahim Kolawole.

The statement explained that based on the administrative acumen and financial expertise of Audu’s son,  Kogi State would be better positioned economically.

The statement further stressed that the positive dream of the Late  Audu for Kogi State, would be a reality through his son who, it claimed,  had learnt a lot from his late father.

While highlighting the achievement of  Shuaibu, the statement, said the late ex-governor’s son, has sunk  motorised boreholes across the 21 local government areas of the state.

It added that Audu’s son had also lifted the living standards of the downtrodden, donating food materials and medical facilities to people particularly at the hit of the COVID19 Pandemic in the state.

Katsina House of Assembly

A bill seeking the prohibition of street begging in Katsina State scaled through second reading at the state house of Assembly on Monday.

The executive bill seeks a four-year prison term or an option of  N10,000 fine for first offender, while second offender will be repatriated to his state or local government origin.

The bill, if  it becomes law, also gives legal teeth to the deportation of any street beggar who is not from Nigeria, to his country.

The bill which originated from Governor Aminu Masari, was first read before the house on June, 30, 2021 by the Majority Leader, Abubakar Abukur.

Abukur told the house that the bill was meant to curb the menace of street begging in the state.

At the Monday plenary, the lawmakers made submissions on the bill before they unanimously allowed it to scale through the second reading.

The plenary was chaired by the Speaker, Alhaji Tasi’u Magari.

The bill was subsequently referred to the Joint House Committee on Religious Affairs and Social Development.

The committee was given six weeks to submit its report.
