Ahmed Joda was an outspoken supporter of the environment – NCF

0

Late Super Permanent Secretary Ahmed Joda was described by the Nigerian Conservation Foundation (NCF) as a true advocate for nature.

Joda recently passed away at the age of 91.

Joda was described as a rare gem, indefatigable elder statesman, vanguard, and true advocate for nature and sustainability in Africa by the Board of Trustees, National Executive Council, and Management of NCF in a press release announcing his death.

He was a long-serving member of the Board of Trustees, according to NCF.

According to a press release signed by Izoma Philip Asiodu, President, Board of Trustees, Joda was passionate about nature conservation and sustainability throughout his life.

“He used his vast experience and knowledge to help advance conservation efforts in Nigeria and throughout Africa.

We honor the life and memory of our dearly departed, a truly remarkable man who accomplished many great things.

“Among his many other accomplishments are his appointment as a Permanent Secretary in the Federal Civil Service, where he served in the Federal Ministries of Information, Education, and Industries until 1978, and many others.

“However, as a tireless and passionate individual dedicated to nation building, even after formal retirement, he was appointed by various administrations, both Federal and State governments, in various capacities to make further contributions to Nigeria’s development.

“His commitment to the Nigerian Conservation Foundation opened many doors of partnership and funding for our projects, in addition to setting a personal example by practicing conservation in his own private agricultural enterprises.

“He was a Nigerian who was humble, straightforward, and liberal. His death has left a void in our hearts that will never be filled.

In 2019, the late Joda was quoted in the press as saying, “I love the environment, which is why I am a member of the Nigerian Conservation Foundation to protect our inheritance.”

Anger as Buhari, Tinubu, others keep “betraying” the APC healthcare manifesto

0

During the ongoing strike by the National Association Residents Doctors (NARD), the visit of President Muhammadu Buhari and Bola Tinubu to the United Kingdom for medical care has ignited widespread anger.

Over 15 days, residents have gone on strike to protest of the government’s refusal to respect promises on health insurance.

In the lead-up to the 2015 elections, the APC released a manifesto describing the party’s plans for if it were to be elected. In the manifesto, the then opposition party stated that “Sadly, the best healthcare in Nigeria remains a plane ticket abroad.”

To have federal spending on healthcare jump from 5.5% to 10% to 15% by 2020, the APC promised that it would increase the proportion of federal spending on healthcare from 5.5% to 10% as soon as possible.

The promises were broken.

It reveals that the party has not met its goal of allocating 10% of healthcare budgets to the budget, much less the even higher allocation of 15% required by 2020. In the 2021 budget, 7% of the overall allocation to healthcare was designated for medical research.

The party also proposed a healthcare network of local clinics and dispensaries, which would provide free medications and services.

This was followed by the APC declaring that they would “build a network of local and mobile clinics offering free health services and drugs.

Buhari is made fun of by Wike, who states that he will not travel abroad for medical checkup.

Despite the promises, the leaders of the APC have been supporting medical tourism overseas for six years now.

N14.6 billion is available to renovate the Aso Villa Clinic, but it seems as though President Buhari takes frequent business trips.

The statehouse clinic, located in the presidential villa, has so far cost over N14 billion.

President Buhari, however, has spent over 200 days in the UK receiving medical treatment, while he has been President for the past six years.

Of the 14.5 billion Naira (approximately $177 million USD) that have been allocated to the clinic in the Presidential Villa, only the President and his family have used it to seek medical help outside of Nigeria.

The President’s medical team has been with him for more than 40 years. In order to better understand his medical history, he should keep working with those who already know about it.

The sole son of President Buhari, Yusuf Buhari, had a motorcycle accident in Nigeria in 2017, and, as a result, he was flown to Germany for initial treatment.

However, many Nigerians are dying from cholera outbreaks due to their inability to afford the alternative. About 800 people have died as a result of cholera outbreaks in Nigeria, according to the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC).

APC-led House rejected a bill that would have barred public officials from making travel arrangements for citizens who wish to use medical tourism.

In 2019, the House of Representatives rejected a bill that would have banned members of the government from traveling abroad for medical treatment.

In May 2019, a bill sponsored by Edo State senator Sergius Ogun was rejected by the full committee of the whole.

While serving as Deputy Speaker of the House, the Deputy Leader, Idris Wase, opposed the bill, arguing that it should be dismissed. The doctor cited a personal experience in the country about the medical situation.

During a checkup in Nigeria, the doctors assured me that I was fine. People encouraged me to travel for a checkup, but it turned out that I was unwell, and I had been there for 3 months, so you are telling me I need permission from the Attorney General before I can travel for another checkup? Get rid of this bill! Instead of trying to stop people from moving, we should instead facilitate healthy travel so that people can help strengthen the healthcare sector,” argued these individuals.

Even though Mr. Wase has alternative options, the majority of Nigerians do not have these options.

doctor’s views

This comment was made by Dr. Abdulkareem Babarinde, a medical doctor. He asserted that the real reason politicians visit foreign countries for medical care is due to a “insatiable appetite for anything foreign.”

In the past, the same politicians have consistently underfunded the sector. More of them might have wished to access their healthcare in the tertiary healthcare sector, which is unfortunately not very interesting. If you count the number of teaching hospitals that have functioning MRI and CT machines, you will find that there are significantly fewer teaching hospitals with functional MRI and CT scans. These are the bare necessities.

There have been some movements in the private hospital sector, so the politicians ought to be able to use it. Investing in private healthcare delivery has a lot of private investors. Most of these politicians have not yet learned how to treat customers politely.

Those British hospitals will be run by Nigerian-trained doctors who are currently working in Nigeria. More and more medical specialists are relocating to the UK every year. For anyone looking to relocate to Canada, there are Nigerian doctors available there. The doctors are ready to commence. They’ll get the best care by investing in the sector.

NLC: Allow market forces to determine the price of gasoline

0

Mele Kyari, the Group Managing Director of the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation, previously stated that once the petroleum industry bill (PIB) becomes law, the price of gasoline could reach N300 per litre.

However, Timipre Sylva, Minister of State for Petroleum, assuaged fears of an impending price hike by stating that organized labor must be supported.

The NLC’s National Administrative Council will meet tomorrow to take an official stance on the bill, which President Muhammadu Buhari signed on Monday.

Joe Ajaero, the NLC’s Deputy President, stated that the government must first make the country’s refineries operational before deregulate the downstream sector.
“Is deregulation synonymous with price increases?” he asked. When you say you’re deregulating, you’re basically saying you’re letting the market decide. Why is the government claiming that gasoline will sell at a specific price? That’s also a cost-effective fix.

“Any CEO of that corporation telling us what it will cost (to buy gasoline) when they deregulate is complicit.

“If we understood from the beginning that deregulation would be left to market forces, it (the price of gasoline) could go up or down. So, why is he putting a price on it?

“This implies that there is more to the process than meets the eye.

“As a pre-condition, we at NLC have stated that the refineries must operate. We didn’t say you should start deregulating and building refineries. If they (the government) first deregulate, then fix the refineries, it will not happen.”

Makinde is asking Oyo lawmakers to approve a N50 billion supplementary budget

Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde has requested that the State House of Assembly approve a N50 billion supplementary budget.

On Tuesday, Makinde requested that the budget be considered and approved.

The request was included in a letter to state legislators.

The supplementary budget, according to Makinde, will fund three projects.

The projects, he explained, were not included in the approved budget for 2021.

According to him, the three projects are the Ibadan Circular Road, the Iseyin-Ogbomoso Road, and the Ibadan Airport Improvement.

Ibadan Circular Road will cost twenty-five billion naira (N25,000,000,000,00), Iseyin-Ogbomoso Road will cost fifteen billion naira (N15,000,000,000,00), and Ibadan Airport Improvement will cost ten billion naira (N10,000,000,000,00), according to Makinde (N10,000,000,000,00).

The Central Bank of Nigeria will provide N50 billion under the Differentiated Cash Reserves Requirements, or DCRR, of which the House of Assembly has approved N100 billion.

The budget for 2021 will be increased from #268,770,964,860,00 to #318,770,964,860,00. (318,770,964,860).

It was previously reported that lawmakers approved an additional six billion naira credit facility for Governor Seyi Makinde on Tuesday.

This latest loan request comes on top of the loans Makinde has taken out since becoming governor of the state.

In July of this year, lawmakers approved a ten billion naira loan for the governor.

Oyo Assembly has approved a new N6 billion loan for Makinde’s government

0

Governor Seyi Makinde’s government has been granted an additional six billion naira credit facility by the Oyo State House of Assembly.

The Assembly had previously approved the Governor’s loan requests to borrow money from various financial institutions.

According to our source, the legislature approved a ten billion naira loan for the administration in July 2019.

On Tuesday, lawmakers approved a six-billion-naira credit facility for the government.

According to our source, the approval comes as a result of the Governor’s letter to the legislators.

In the letter, Makinde stated that the loan would be used to complete projects in the state.

He went on to say that the money would go toward existing projects in the state.

“The Governor-in-Council met and approved the Oyo State government receiving an additional 5 billion naira loan facility and the balance of a 1 billion naira window from First Bank Nigeria Ltd.

“The total amount will be used to fund existing State projects.”

In response, Speaker of the House Adebo Ogundoyin stated that the Assembly will continue to monitor the Executive Council’s spending and expenses.

During the plenary on Tuesday, Ogundoyin stated that the lawmakers would ensure that the loans approved are used wisely.

“Our economy cannot develop unless we have enough funds to develop necessary infrastructures,” he said. “We have assurances from the Executive Council that the burden of the loan will not be bore by the next administration, as all efforts will be made to pay it back in a timely manner.”

“Given the significance of the loan request, I implore us to assist Governor Seyi Makinde in his efforts to develop the state.”

Citizens must not allow the Afghan crisis to spill over into Nigeria – JUN

0

The Journalists for United Nigeria (JUN), also known as the Association of Journalists for United Nigeria, has urged Nigerians to seek peace at all costs.

The group’s convener, journalist and columnist Fredrick Nwabufo, made the call at a press conference in Abuja on Tuesday, emphasizing that JUN is strictly non-partisan and not a pressure or lobby group.

In a press conference, Nwabufo stated that the Taliban’s usurpation of power in Afghanistan and the ensuing turmoil in the country, despite decades of military support from powerful countries such as the United States of America, should serve as a warning to all citizens about the importance of defending and preserving Nigeria’s peace and security.

He insisted that neither the West nor the East hold the key to salvation, and urged Nigerians, whom he referred to as “potters,” to build Nigeria with their own hands.

‘’Recent events in the country have prompted patriots to rise up and defend the country. The enormity of the challenges that we face as a people today cannot be expressed in words,” he said.

According to Nwabufo, now is the time for Nigerians at all levels to unite and demand that the country be united in peace, togetherness, and unity.

”Peace-building must be embraced as a path to peace in our communities. We require state protection, but it is much easier to do so if we do not spread hatred and division.

‘’Nigeria belongs to us. Nigeria is a country that is worth fighting for. As a proponent of peace and national unity, the Association of Journalists for United Nigeria (JUN), also known as Journalists for United Nigeria (JUN), urges all Nigerians and key stakeholders in the country to make the pursuit of peace a sacred duty at this tumultuous juncture in our history.

While anyone has the right to agitate for secession and self-determination, JUN believes that anyone or group engaging in such agitation must avoid using violence or coercion in any form.

The group stated, “We must denounce violence in all forms by all actors,” adding that “violence should not be found among civilised human species.”

We want to stress that while self-determination is a universal right, taking up arms to kill citizens and security agents crosses the line into terrorism. In whatever they seek, all Nigerians should use constitutional means. The cost of war outweighs the cost of peace. In a war, there are no true winners; only death and destruction.

We acknowledge that social inequality, poverty, unemployment, injustice, and corruption are some of the root causes of these protests. These are issues that affect the entire Nigerian population. Every Nigerian is pushed to the margins. And this is the result of years of leadership failure. We urge the government to look into the root causes of these protests rather than relying on force. We won’t be able to successfully treat metastasizing cancer unless the root causes are surgically addressed.

We recommend that the government pursues peace-building initiatives, engages in dialogue when appropriate, and extends an olive branch when possible.

“It shall be the duty of every citizen to help to enhance the power, prestige, and good name of Nigeria, defend Nigeria,” says Section 24b of the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria (as amended). This section of the constitution* gives JUN its mandate.

‘’We require a large number of citizens who are capable of becoming Nigerians. Only journalists, in our opinion, fit into this category.

Journalists, according to JUN, must rise to the occasion and mobilize both the political class and the general public to imbibe our unity.

Several groups in various parts of the country are currently advocating for Nigeria’s disintegration and the creation of separate republics.

While the Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB, and other like-minded groups hold sway in the South East, the Yoruba Nation, a group advocating for the Oduduwa Republic, is gaining ground in the South West.

JUN also urged Nigerians to prioritize the country’s unity, peace, and security over all else.

The call comes just days after the Taliban took control of Afghanistan, invaded Kabul, the country’s capital, and occupied the presidency.

This occurred after the United States of America withdrew its military from the war-torn country after nearly two decades of service.

Dmitry Zhirnov, the Russian ambassador to Afghanistan, said on Tuesday that he had a positive and constructive meeting with Taliban representatives in Kabul.

“These were Taliban senior management representatives in the city. The meeting was upbeat and productive. According to Taliban representatives, the Taliban movement has the friendliest and best approach to Russia. In an interview with Russian state television channel Russia 24, Zhirnov stated, “They confirmed the embassy’s security guarantees.”

“There will be no impediments to the embassy’s operations. In comparison to the previous administration, there will be no deterioration in status. He went on to say, “All of our needs will be met.”

The ambassador made it clear that this was a purely technical meeting. According to him, the Taliban representative requested that his name not be revealed.

HURIWA reacts to the death of Ibrahim Mantu

0

Senator Ibrahim Mantu was described as an elder statesman, erudite politician, and friend of journalism and journalists by the Human Rights Writers Association of Nigeria, HURIWA.

HURIWA recalled the former Deputy Senate President’s significant contributions to the socio-political development of Plateau State and the nation at large, emphasizing that the former federal lawmaker’s sudden death is a great loss to his state and Nigeria as a whole.

According to HURIWA, late Senator Mantu was a grassroots politician whose life was all about the people’s interests, as he did everything in his power to serve them through empowerment and quality representation.

Mantu earned his place in Nigerian politics through active participation, according to the human rights organization, and he also had a strong bond with the youth, whom he mentored not only in politics but also in other fields, particularly humanitarian service.

“Until his death, the deceased made his resources, a wealth of experience and knowledge, available to the practice of journalism in general. We Journalists will miss the late Deputy Senate’s voice of peace and unity, as well as an advocate for social cohesion and tolerance, which he represented particularly during the country’s most trying moments,” HURIWA said.

“One of the things that struck me about the late Senator was his non-tribal approach to national issues. He was a Muslim, but no one would know because he accommodated everyone; he was friends with the Igbos and generous to all.

“Mantu was welcoming to all, and during his early years in Gindiri, he played a role in bringing people together. He considered the greater good. He was a charismatic politician, and other northern leaders should emulate his qualities while he was still alive.

Mantu was a member of the People’s Democratic Party’s Board of Trustees before his death (PDP). He held a variety of political positions, including Director-General of the defunct National Republican Convention during the 1993 presidential campaign; National Chairman of the defunct Peoples Democratic Alliance; and National Publicity Secretary of the defunct United Nigeria Congress Party.

”In 1999, he was elected Senator of the Federal Republic of Nigeria for the Plateau Central Constituency on the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) platform, and in 2000, he was named Deputy Senate President.

”In his autobiography, released in 2020, former Abia governor Orji Kalu said Mantu was the true hero in the efforts to stop ex-President Olusegun Obasanjo’s third-term agenda in 2006. This was an example of true representation that was not influenced by political affiliations.

PFN advises FG to stop bullying genuine agitators and to address insecurity

0

The Pentecostal Fellowship of Nigeria (PFN) has urged the federal government to engage genuine agitators in dialogue rather than bullying them.

The group also tasked the federal government with addressing insecurity in various parts of the country, citing events in the country as the catalyst for ethnic nationalist agitation.

The group’s Anambra State chapter, led by Bishop Moses Ezedebego, made the announcement on Monday at a press conference in Awka, Anambra State.

He expressed concern about the country’s agitations and insecurity. They urged the federal government to wake up and work hard to protect the people while also restoring their faith in the country.

“The Federal Government should address agitations and insecurity in the country with purpose. The government should not bully and suppress legitimate protests, but should instead humbly listen and dialogue when necessary.

“We believe the greatest challenge we face in the country is massive systemic corruption, which the government has woefully failed to address,” Ezedebego said.

While congratulating the candidates of various political parties on their victory in the upcoming Anambra governorship election, the group said it has established a ‘PFN for Good Governance Committee’ to ensure that the group’s interests are represented in government.

“One of us, Dr. Amaechi Nwachukwu, is the chairman of that committee. PFN wants to make sure that whoever becomes governor of this state is a god-fearing man or woman who will put the state’s interests first.

“PFN is the umbrella body for all Pentecostal churches in the country, and we have a large membership, so whoever becomes governor of Anambra State will not be able to ignore us,” he said.

CBN will arrest and prosecute Naira abusers

CBN publishes new permit

The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) has stated that it is working with the Nigerian Police Force and other law enforcement agencies to apprehend and prosecute anyone caught abusing the Naira.

Osita Nwanisobi, CBN’s Acting Director of Corporate Communications, announced this in a statement on Tuesday.

He did, however, issue a warning to Nigerians, particularly those attending social functions such as birthday parties, weddings, and funerals, not to disrespect the Naira or face arrest by law enforcement.

”The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) has been alerted to the activities of individuals who openly abuse the legal tender system by hurling wads of Naira notes into the air and stamping on the currency at social functions.

“There have also been instances where people mishandle the Naira, deface it, hawk it at parties, and in some cases, reject the money. It should be stated that, contrary to the practice of these unpatriotic individuals, disrespecting the currency in which citizens trade is neither cultural nor moral.

For the avoidance of doubt, Section 21(3) of the Central Bank of Nigeria Act 2007 (as amended) states that “spraying, dancing, or matching on the Naira or any note issued by the Bank during social occasions or otherwise howsoever shall constitute abuse and defacing of the Naira or such note and shall be punishable under the law by fines, imprisonment, or both.”

“As a result, the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) is working together with the Nigerian Police Force, the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS), the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), and the Nigerian Financial Intelligence Unit (NFIU) to combat the unpatriotic practice.

“As a result, we warn Nigerians, particularly those attending social functions such as birthday parties, weddings, and funerals, not to disrespect the Naira or face arrest by law enforcement agencies. Our legal tender and a symbol of national pride is the naira. Let us treat it with respect and care,” the statement said.
