Buhari cautions contractors and businesspeople against bribery

President Muhammadu Buhari urged businessmen, contractors, and other privileged Nigerians who benefit from government patronage to always engage in Corporate Social Responsibility, rather than seeking to favor public officials with gifts and kickbacks, during a weekend speech in Daura, Katsina State.

“I don’t want your cheque,” President Buhari remarked when he paid a visit to the Emir of Daura, Dr. Umar Faruk Umar, at his palace. Instead than attempting to recoup kickbacks from public officials, including my office, go out and help our communities.

“We don’t want any checks or influence of any sort from anybody or any organization. Let them recall their social responsibilities as a corporation.”

Even as he assured the people that his heart remained with them, the President said that he would love to visit Daura more often if it weren’t for the exorbitant expense of presidential travels and exposing security troops to bad weather.
“We are renowned for agriculture, and I own a farm here. No one can stop me from coming every two weeks. However, the movement comes at a hefty price. “I’d prefer it be utilized to improve our schools, clinics, and hospitals,” the President said.

He went on to say that it was through God’s favor that Nigeria remained together as a nation despite divisions that led to a 30-month civil war.

“We want to thank God all of the time for keeping our nation united. The nation was plunged into political turmoil on January 15, 1966. We experienced a 30-month civil war that claimed the lives of over a million people.
“We continue to give thanks to God for keeping us together. We are thankful to everyone who cared about our unity and development. May God continue to provide them with blessings,” he said.

Despite his busy schedule, the Emir of Daura praised the President for always making time to visit his hometown and the palace.

“Your visit to Daura exemplifies your excellent character, which we admire. I can tell you that men, women, children, marketers, and craftsmen are always delighted to see you and will pray for your well-being.

“Today is an appreciation day, not a day for speeches. Because you are the president of the nation, we have been so fortunate as a community. You have enhanced the prestige of our domain.

”The increasing flow of individuals and organizations coming to assist us here has benefitted us much as a community. It’s because of you, we know.
“May the good Lord constantly go before of you and behind you, removing all impediments in your way,” he said.

The Emir said that the President must stay focused on achieving achievements, especially in the area of national security.

“Nigeria is fortunate to have you now. I’m not saying it to please you, but it would have been extremely tough if you hadn’t been in power. He said, “I doubt we’ll be here today.”

2023.: CAN advocates for a Christian president

0

The Youth Wing of the Christian Association of Nigeria (YOWICAN) recommended on Saturday that the country’s next President be a Christian to ensure balance in the country’s leadership.

Additionally, YOWICAN stated that rotating the presidency would promote equity, unity, and peace.

This was revealed during Saturday’s NEC meeting at the National Christian Centre.

National Executive Members, Zonal Leaders, State Leaders (drawn from the federation’s 36 states plus the FCT) and representatives from CAN’s blocs/denominations attended the meeting.

It urged bandits and kidnappers to renounce evil and put an end to ongoing kidnappings and murders.

Additionally, the Christian association pledged to work with Muslims and the Nigeria Interreligious Council (NIREC) on peacebuilding.

This was stated in a communique issued following the conclusion of YOWICAN’s National Executive Council (NEC) meeting and read by the organization’s National Chairman, Belusochukwu Enwere.

Enwere stated, “As such, the election of a Christian president in 2023 will be a true expression of Nigeria’s equity and justice.” The next president, who should take office in 2023, should be a Christian, as the current administration’s president is a Muslim, and thus the president should rotate between Christians and Muslims to ensure that Nigeria’s leadership is balanced. We have capable Christian leaders who are capable of representing and managing the country’s affairs. We encourage our leaders to engage fully in politics in order to produce a good president for Nigeria.

“That the current leadership of YOWICAN pledges her undying loyalty and solidarity to the deserving leadership of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) under the capable leadership of His Eminence, Rev. Dr. Samson Supo Ayokunle (NIREC).

“YOWICAN laments the rising rate of insecurity in Nigeria, but applauds the government’s and security agencies’ efforts to combat the nefarious activities of bandits, killer herdsmen, and insurgents, among others.

“YOWICAN, in carrying out Christian tenets and faith, strongly believes in peaceful coexistence; however, this piety should not be interpreted as cowardice; thus, kidnappers, bandits, killer herdsmen, terrorists, and unknown gunmen should not push Christian youths to the point of considering self-defence strategies as a last resort.

“Despite the progress made thus far in combating crime, YOWICAN observes an urgent need to halt the rising tide of attacks, killings, and destruction of innocent citizens’ lives, properties, farmlands, and livelihoods in Northern states, particularly in Christian communities in Southern Kaduna.”

The CAN youth demanded the immediate release of all abductees, particularly those held captive at Bethel Baptist High School in Kaduna State.

“YOWICAN demands the immediate release of all abductees, particularly the students of Bethel Baptist High School in Kaduna State. We call on both the Federal and Kaduna State governments to expedite their release.”

Igboho Confronts FG, Demands N500bn in Damages for Residence Invasion

IBADAN – Sunday Adeyemo, popularly known as Sunday Igboho, a Yoruba Nation agitator who is currently on trial in the Republic of Benin, has filed a N500 billion suit against the Department of State Services (DSS) and the Attorney General of the Federation (AGF), Abubakar Malami (SAN), for the invasion of his Ibadan residence on July 1, 2021.

This was contained in an application filed on his behalf by his lawyers at the Oyo State High Court on Friday for an order enforcing his fundamental human rights.

According to his lawyers, the suit was brought pursuant to Order 11 of the 2009 fundamental human rights enforcement procedure rules and under the court’s inherent jurisdiction as preserved by Section 6 of the 1999 Constitution.
It will be recalled that between 1 a.m. and 3 a.m. on July 1, DSS operatives invaded Igboho’s residence in Ibadan’s Soka neighborhood, arrested 12 people, and killed two others in a gun duel.

The DSS paraded the suspects and ammunition purportedly recovered from Igboho’s residence.

However, the embattled Yoruba Nation activist denied keeping ammunition in his home, claiming that the secret police were attempting to entrap him.

Igboho is seeking in the suit, through his lawyer, Chief Yomi Alliyu (SAN), orders declaring the invasion a violation of his fundamental human rights, property damage as a violation of his fundamental right to peacefully own property and wealth, and N500 billion in damages, among other things.

The amount was described as “exemplary and/or aggravated damages for violating the applicant’s fundamental rights in the course of an illegal and/or malicious invasion of his residence located, lying, and being at Igboho Villa. No.1, Dalag Street, Off Soka Bus Stop, Soka Area, Off Lagos-Ibadan Expressway, Ibadan.”

Igboho also seeks a declaration from the court that it was “oppressive, malicious, arbitrary, and grossly unconstitutional for the 2nd and 3rd respondents to invade the applicant’s residence located, lying, and being at Igboho Villa, 1, Dalag Street, Off Soka Bus Stop, Soka Area, Off Lagos-Ibadan Expressway, Ibadan without announcing their identities and requesting the applicant to open his gate but

Additionally, it urged the court to declare that “the respondents’ determination to prevent the applicant from propagating his belief in association with other like-minded individuals in creating a Yoruba Nation and/or Oduduwa Republic for his Indigenous Yoruba people and hunting him down with a gun with the intent of arresting him dead or alive when he has not called for war to accomplish the same is a violation of his fundamental rights.”
He sought an injunction prohibiting the respondents from arresting, harassing, or disturbing him in any way that might violate his fundamental human rights.

Mr Jamoh stated that the kidnapping occurred on Monday in Rivers State waters.

He expressed regret that the incident occurred at a time when the Nigerian maritime industry was making tremendous strides in the country’s maritime security sector and was being lauded for its achievements both locally and internationally.
“I have spoken with Comrade Adewale Adeyanju, President-General of the Nigerian Maritime Workers Union, to convey the agency’s outrage over the incident and unequivocal condemnation of this heinous development.

Mr Jamoh stated that NIMASA was also monitoring the events and their Deep Blue assets, particularly the C4i and intelligence operations centers.

He stated that the public would be kept informed of progress in due course.

Mr Jamoh stated that the agency was aware of the presence of sea pirates and the activities of other marine criminals fleeing the intense heat in the nation’s territorial waters as a result of the Deep Blue Project’s enforcement.
