A group of renowned Nigerians will convene in Abuja on August 5 to examine the reality and fiction of an indivisible and unified Nigeria during a one-day public lecture, amidst agitations for secession by some sectors of the country.

Kano State Governor Abdullahi Umar Ganduje will make a keynote speech at the APC Press Corps event titled “Towards Ensuring an Enduring Democracy.”

Former Imo State Governor Rochas Okorocha, Works and Housing Minister Babatunde Fashola (SAN), Senator Peter Nwaboshi, Minister of State for the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Dr. Ramatu Tijjani-Aliyu, and Ekiti Central Senator Opeyemi Bamidele are among a five-man panel of eminent Nigerians who will debate the paper.

Mr. Babatunde Ayeni, Chairman of the Conference Organising Committee, said in a statement released yesterday in Abuja that the lecture is aimed at contributing to the intellectual growth of the nation’s democracy.

Gunmen ambush a Plateau village, killing seven people and destroying 250 homes

According to locals, gunmen attacked a Plateau village, killing at least seven individuals.

According to a statement released by the Iregwe Development Association (IDA) on Sunday in Jos, gunmen murdered seven people and destroyed 250 homes in several towns in Miango chiefdom of Bassa Local Government Area of Plateau.

The assailants reportedly injured many people and burned over 40 farmlands in the region, according to a statement signed by Davidson Malison, the organization’s National Publicity Secretary.

He said the event happened on Saturday night and that the injured were being treated at an unknown hospital at the time.

“Over 250 houses were razed in Zanwra, Nche-Tahu, Rikwe-Rishe A and B, Ri-Dogo, and Nchu-Nzhwa, all in Miango chiefdom’s Jebbu-Miango villages, during the unabated onslaught that lasted over four hours.

“Seven individuals were murdered, while a number of others were injured and are being treated at unnamed hospitals.

According to the statement, “about 40 farmlands with a variety of crops were entirely destroyed, and many home belongings and domestic animals were taken away.”

Mr Malison, who called the situation “unfortunate,” asked the government and security services to step up efforts to protect people’s lives and property.

The Plateau police command’s Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Ubah Ogaba, confirmed the event to media and said the command has already sent officers to the area to guarantee peace and order.

“The police are on top of things; extra officers have been dispatched to the area. “An investigation is also underway to apprehend the perpetrators,” he said.

Armed men have attacked farming villages on multiple occasions in the Plateau.

Some of the attacks are said to be carried out by armed herders in retaliation for farmers killing their animals or other herders after the cattle had infiltrated the fields.

Plateau is one of the states that has been most hit by the farmers-herders confrontations that have claimed hundreds of lives across Nigeria.

The assailants are almost never captured by security services.

Emergence of Southern Interest Group

The Coalition of Southern Groups has formed a group solely dedicated to the cause of Nigerian southerners.

Convener Victor Chikwendu said the group is a collaboration of over thirty political pressure groups that span party lines in southern Nigeria.

It was also said that members of the organization, which included both the PDP and the APC, joined together solely to defend and safeguard the rights and interests of the southern Nigerian entity.

It said the organization confirmed and adopted the convener, Mr Victor Chikwendu as its Director-General (South East), while Mr Fortune Oyadonghan holds the post of Chairman (South South) and Adejumo Ojo Ebeneezer as Secretary (South West).

Other group leadership roles were allocated similarly. Head of Publicity (South South), Mobilisation and Organization (South East) and Legal and Policies (South East) ( South West).

The organization has promised to work with significant political players regardless of their political views.

The statement says:

Victor Chikwendu held a gathering of over 30 political pressure organizations from the APC, PDP, and other political fronts on Saturday, July 24, 2021 in Port Harcourt, Rivers State.

Its main goals are to safeguard the interests of Southern Nigerians, promote a secure political climate amongst the Southern States of Nigeria, and support the Governors’ actions and resolutions.

In the Southern States of the Federation, the group agreed to work together for peace, social political progress, and development.

The Lagos State administration has denied ordering the decrease of NYSC physicians’ monthly stipend from N75,000 to N15,000.

The National Association of Resident Physicians (NARD) said on Saturday that it will strike countrywide on August 2 if the federal and state governments did not honor their agreements with doctors.

The group also accused Lagos State of reducing the NYSC physicians’ allowance.

But Establishments, Training and Pensions Commissioner Ajibola Ponnle disputed the NARD’s allegation about proposed decrease of physicians’ allowance as “false and deceptive.”

Mr. Hakeem Muri-Okunola, the state’s Head of Service, published a circular on employees’ pay structure in response to last year’s National Council on Establishments (NCE) meeting in Lagos.

As a result of the 42nd National Council on Establishments (NCE) Meeting held in Lagos from Monday, 30th November – Friday, 4th December 2020, the Head of Service for Lagos State, Mr. Hakeem Muri-Okunola, issued a circular to all public workers in Lagos.

Since the programs are part of the training, they no longer attract Grade Levels in the Salary Structure.

In the fight against the COVID-19 epidemic, Governor Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu has shown devotion, bravery, and tenacity.

“The state government will host a stakeholder consultation meeting next week on the ramifications of the National Council of Establishments judgment on Internship, Housemanship and NYSC Doctors in the Civil/Public Service, which necessitated this move.

NAFDAC condemned the US and EU’s repeated rejection of Nigerian food and agricultural products

Prof. Moji Adeyeye, Director-General of the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC), has condemned the US and EU’s repeated rejection of Nigerian food and agricultural products due to claimed low quality.

She asked the port’s regulatory bodies to address the European Commission’s Rapid Alert System for Food and Feed (RASFF) Border Rejection Notifications on Nigerian items.

Officials from the Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, Foreign Portfolio Investments, Standards Organisation of Nigeria, Nigeria Export Promotion Council, and Institute of Public Analysts met virtually to discuss NAFDAC’s future (IPAN).

Prof. Adeyeye lamented the damage done to Nigeria’s reputation by the EU’s continuous rejection of Nigerian exports.

“NAFDAC has a statutory obligation to preserve public health via the execution of its mandate,” Prof. Adeyeye said in an Abuja statement yesterday.

JAMB Donates ICT Centre To Ogun Polytechnic

The Registrar of the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB), Prof Isiaq Oloyede, has inaugurated a 500-capacity Information and Communication Technology (ICT) centre donated to the Ogun State Institute of Technology (OGITECH), Igbesa.

The ICT project followed the National Tertiary Admissions Performance Merit Award worth N75,000,000 won by the institution as the most Compliant Institution in 2019 JAMB admission guidelines.

Oloyede, alongside Governor Dapo Abiodun, represented by the State Commissioner for Education, Science and Technology, Prof. Abayomi Arigbabu, inaugurated the state-of-the-art ICT at Igbesa.

In his remarks, Oloyede commended the Rector, OGITECH, Dr (Mrs) Olufunke Akinkurolere, for her doggedness and commitment towards improving standards of education at the institution, which earned it the National Tertiary Admissions Performance Merit Award.

The expansion of a 120,000-ton rice mill is backed by a bank

As the company prepares to double the capacity of its 120,000-ton rice mill in Argungu, Kebbi State, First Bank of Nigeria has affirmed its support for WACOT Ltd, a subsidiary of TGI Group.

The bank stated this during a weekend visit to the mill by its board members, led by Managing Director Dr Adesola Adeduntan.

Vice President Yemi Osinbajo commissioned WACOT’s first mill in 2017 and this expansion comes just four years later.

WACOT’s premium household brands, such as Big Bull and Patriot, were praised by Adeduntan as “world-class.”

He stated that the new WACOT mill would continue to develop Nigeria’s rice value chain, thereby improving the lives of many small-holder farmers, in addition to ensuring Nigeria’s food security.

“This is in line with First Bank’s goal of economic development through long-term job creation. We’ve seen the socio-economic impact of locating this factory in this state, so we’re committing to remain a very close financial partner of WACOT Rice Limited,” Adeduntan said.

Farouk Gumel, chairman of WACOT Rice Ltd, said the mill’s expansion would help Nigeria achieve its food security goals.

“We are ecstatic to be hosting the FirstBank Board of Directors in Argungu. Our collaboration has progressed significantly. Our mill’s proposed expansion clearly demonstrates that the future is bright,” Gumel added.

TGI Group’s Group Managing Director, Rahul Savara, stated that the company would not give up on its efforts to develop Nigeria’s agricultural sector and economy.

“Through an efficient value chain, we want to have successful farmers and happy consumers. “We are grateful to First Bank for walking with us on this journey,” Savara said, adding that this investment is another important step in the right direction.
