Fani-Kayode identifies the biggest mistake the APC can make

0

Former Nigerian Aviation Minister Femi Fani-Kayode says the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) is making the “worst mistake” by removing Governor Mala Mai Buni of Yobe State as its caretaker national chairman.

According to Fani-Kayode, APC’s Mai Buni is not being given due respect, as he stated in a tweet on his verified handle on Saturday.

As a result, ‘FFK’ urges APC leaders to keep Mai Buni as the party’s caretaker chairman.

Sati Bulama, a concerned APC member from Biu, Borno State, recently penned an article in which he stated that by continuing with its congresses under the leadership of Governor Mai Buni as acting National Chairman, the APC risks “losing everything” because continuing to recognize the Buni-led committee “is tantamount to putting all its eggs in one basket in a delicate race that requires tact and cauterization.”

The APC’s Caretaker ExtraOrdinary Convention Planning Committee (CECPC) tentatively scheduled Local Government Congresses for the first week of September 2021.

Mai Buni deserves nothing but respect from Fani-Kayode, a Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) member, for how he has paddled the ship of the ruling APC since at least June 2020.

“It astounds me that the National Chairman of a political party that has attracted three governors from the ranks of the opposition, as well as Senators, House of Representative members, Board of Trade members, former ministers, and other notables, all in one year, is being undermined by disgruntled elements within his own party.

“The most serious mistake @OfficialAPCNg can make is to remove Gov. Mala Mai Buni as its leader.

“I say this because he has done more for the ruling party’s credibility and strength than any other National Chairman since its inception.

“Aside from being a formidable intellectual, a man of his word, and a true gentleman, he is also a moderate, civilised, cerebal, fair-minded, and focused individual for whom I have enormous respect.

Fani-Kayode wrote, “I wish him well.”

UNICAL investigates sorting, extortion, sexual harassment, and exam malpractices

The University of Calabar, UNICAL, has stated that it has discovered that some members of the university’s academic staff have revived obnoxious acts of sorting, extortion, sexual harassment, and examination malpractices.

As a result, the university’s authority warns those involved, whom it claims have been identified, to desist and repent, while also threatening to bring the perpetrators before the institution’s Disciplinary Committee.

UNICAL stated that it had identified the departments and teaching personnel involved in the “obnoxious and abhorrent acts” in a memo dated August 10, 202, addressed to the university community and endorsed by the Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Administration, Professor Michael P. Okon.

The university stated in the memo titled “Obnoxious and Abhorrent Acts of Sorting Extortion and Sexual Harassment” that it was aware that some of the lecturers involved in the acts also allowed students to write examinations “at homes, hotels, and relaxation places.”

The memo stated, “It has come to management’s attention that some teaching staff have resurrected the obnoxious and abhorrent acts of sorting and sex for grade/sexual harassment.”

“Some departments and lecturers have been singled out, and investigations have begun.” Management is also aware that lecturers are required to provide students with scripts in order for them to write exams at their homes, hotels, and rest stops,” the memo revealed.

“All those involved in these heinous activities are hereby advised to cease and desist. In fact, they will be invited to meet with the Disciplinary Committee soon,” the university warned.

ECOWAS Speaker expresses concern about non-compliance with court rulings

The non-compliance of member states with the ruling of the ECOWAS Community Court of Justice is a major source of concern for the Speaker of the ECOWAS Parliament, Sidie Tunis. Tunis emphasized that total adherence to court rulings is a major symbol of democracy. “Please allow me to use this medium to raise an issue that has been a source of great concern in the community. I’m referring to member states and other major players in the region’s consistent non-compliance with Community Court of Justice rulings.

“Respect for the Rule of Law, which includes total compliance with court judgments, is a major symbol of democracy. It is a key pillar in determining how mature a community’s democracy is. The courts are the common man’s last hope on the streets. ECOWAS cannot afford to establish a Community Court after adopting all necessary legal instruments, only to have its Member States continue to disregard its judgments with impunity. All laws must be obeyed, and all court decisions must be followed. Failure to do so has the potential to plunge any society into anarchy,” he advised.

Three suspected pirates were apprehended by Copyright Inspectors and Police in a raid on Suleja Market in Niger State. In addition, the team seized pirated materials from the suspects. On Friday, the Nigerian Copyright Commission, NCC, announced the seizure. Following a surveillance operation, the seizures were made during an anti-piracy operation at One Way Road, Suleja Market in Suleja. The value of the 250 copies of the Holy Bible and pirated textbooks seized is estimated to be N1.5 million.

According to Vincent Oyefeso, the commission’s director of public affairs, “the confiscated works included primary and secondary school texts, copies of the Oxford Advanced Learner’s Dictionary, and various versions of the Holy Bible.” The suspects, Kelechi Ugwuiro, Romanus Ojimba, and Ebuka Chinedu, were arrested for distributing and offering for sale suspected pirated literary works, in violation of the provisions of the Nigerian Copyright Act, according to Oyefeso. Investigations are currently underway to apprehend and prosecute the main suppliers in the piracy chain.

Buhari will return from the United Kingdom today

Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari is expected to return to Nigeria on Friday evening after a two-week visit to the United Kingdom.
According to reports, the president will return to Nigeria by 5.00 p.m. on Thursday.

The president had traveled to the United Kingdom for the Global Education Summit on Financing the Global Partnership for Education (2021-2025).

The summit, according to Special Adviser to the President on Media and Publicity Femi Adesina, was expected to provide a platform for partners to chart a path forward toward transforming education systems in partner countries through the exchange of best practices.

Adesina also stated that the president will return to the country in the second week of August after completing a medical examination.

However, the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) chastised the president for traveling to the United Kingdom for the conference, claiming that it could have been held virtually.

Kola Ologbondiyan, the PDP’s National Publicity Secretary, had described the president’s trip as a waste of the country’s scarce resources, accusing him of hiding under the guise of the conference to seek medical treatment.

Buhari, according to Ologbodiyan, is “wasteful, thinks only about himself, and cares less about millions of citizens who do not have access to foreign medical treatment, but who are dying every day because the government has crippled our health sector.”

Adesina stated that the president had over 40 years of patronage with doctors in the United Kingdom, and that it was best for the president to stick with those who had his medical records because he could afford it.

APC LG Congress is held in September

The ruling All Progressives Congress (APCCaretaker )’s ExtraOrdinary Convention Planning Committee (CECPC) has tentatively scheduled Local Government Congresses for the first week of September 2021.

Senator John James Akpanudoedehe, Secretary of the CECPC, announced the new timeline for the local government congress on Friday in Abuja.

The Secretary denied reports that the Caretaker Committee had suspended local government and state legislatures indefinitely.

Akpanudoedehe dismissed the reports, saying, “The CECPC has tentatively fixed LGA Congresses for the first week of September 2021.”

During the inauguration of Ward Congress Appeal Committees on Wednesday, the Secretary recalled that “official information from the party was that dates and guidelines for the LGA Congresses will be fixed after the Ward Congresses Appeal exercise, followed by due consideration of the Appeal Committee’s reports by the CECPC.”

The party’s Ward Congress was held on July 31 in 33 states and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), while the exercise was canceled in Anambra, Bayelsa, and Zamfara states.

The National Secretariat received petitions from 14 states at the inauguration of Ward Congress Appeal Committees on Wednesday, while the party awaits reports from 12 states two weeks after the exercise.

Police Arrest Suspected Bank Hacker and BDC Operators in Connection with N1.868bn Scam

0

The Lagos State Police Special Fraud Unit apprehended a suspected internet scammer who hacked into the accounts of a first generation bank and defrauded the bank of N1.868 billion.
Femi Salau, the suspected hacker, and two accomplices, two bureau de change operators, were apprehended by the police special fraud unit.

Salau was arrested on suspicion of using a software to generate fictitious credits totaling N1,868,900,000, which he then deposited into the accounts of some of the bank’s customers.

Salau successfully made debits totaling N417,542,000 through online banking transfers to other banks, according to SFU spokesman Eyitayo Johnson on Thursday.

According to him, the affected banks petitioned the unit, which then contacted the Central Bank of Nigeria and Deposit Money Banks, whose customers were recipients of the fraudulent funds.

He stated that a significant amount had been recovered thus far.

“Officials from the Special Fraud Unit in Ikoyi, Lagos, have apprehended one Femi Salau, the kingpin of a syndicate that specializes in hacking into the servers of banks and corporate entities.

“The hacker, who demonstrated exemplary mastery of the cyber environment, was arrested after he hacked into a first generation bank’s Flex-Cube Universal Banking System,” he said.

“Using application software, he created fictitious credits totaling N1,868,900,000 on three of the bank’s customers’ accounts and successfully consummated debits totaling N417,542,000 through internet banking transfers to other banks.

“While acting quickly on a petition from the bank, the unit contacted the Central Bank of Nigeria and Deposit Money Banks, whose customers were beneficiaries of the fraudulent funds, and was able to salvage a significant amount,” he said.

The SFU stated that among the items recovered from Salau were an Apple laptop and an iPhone, and that he and the BDC operators who laundered the money would be charged as soon as the investigation was completed.

Johnson elaborated on the arrest, saying, “We had been on the trail of the hacker for a while.” He left the country, so we put him under surveillance and picked him up at the airport.

“Anderson Bankole, the Commissioner of Police in charge of the unit, arrested one of the BDCs operators in an Abuja bank while he was attending the IGP’s conference. In Lagos, the other BDC operator was apprehended.”

“The hacker was the last person we arrested,” he explained, “because we conduct our investigations from the bottom up.”

“As a result, the Commissioner of Police in charge of the unit scheduled a meeting with the Chief Compliance Officers and Heads of Technology/Information Security Departments of banks to brainstorm on the loopholes exploited by this suspect and how to counter similar hacks for the benefit of both the police and our economy’s banking sector.”

Gov Ortom, Herdsmen and Obsession with Buhari

0

BY ANDREW HWANDE

The governor of Benue State, Samuel Ortom, is indeed a brave man. The circumstances surrounding his elections as governor in 2015 under the umbrella of the All-Progressive Congress (APC) is a story for another day.

The question is, who is Samuel Ortom? A man with principles or a man without principles? These questions ran in my mind as a result of his recent posturing regarding the state of security in the county and the constant attack on the personality of President Muhammadu Buhari.

As a governor, don’t get me wrong; he has a right to say things the way he perceives them. However, I am not convinced that he has that right to turn the truth on its head, especially with the farmer/herders’ conflict in Benue State. I think this obsession with President Muhammadu Buhari started in 2018 when he sense possible defeat for the ticket of the APC for the gubernatorial elections on account of poor performance. And since then, all hell has been let loose, like President Muhammadu Buhari is the chairman of the APC.

I like to call a spade a spade. Governor Samuel Ortom is the most intellectually deficient individual to govern Benue state. He is uncouth; he is cunny, deceptive and highly skilled in divide and rule. I say all of these after a critical assessment of Benue State before he became governor and what is obtainable in the state six years after.

Workers are owed several months salaries; pensioners are languishing in abject poverty due to the non-payment of their pension and gratuity, there is a dearth of infrastructure, the educational and health sectors are in a deplorable state.

Most times, I wonder how and where he gets the guts to issue public statements castigating the federal government’s efforts in addressing the security challenges in the state. Is he mindful that his actions have led to an unprecedented level of poverty in the state and a factor for the frequent clashes between farmers/herders? Is he also mindful that his land grabbing drive and desire to take over the cattle ranching business in Benue and North Central could also be another factor why there seem not to be peace in Benue state?

Samuel Ortom is a typical example of a dirty politician that thrives in grandstanding. He is in my opinion only clever by his diversionary methodology from his atrocities. The recent one that got me wondering was when he said the Nigerian government didn’t go after Fulani militiamen as it went after Nnamdi Kanu and Sunday Igboho.

The governor said, “I see a lot of lack of commitment on the part of the Federal Government in ensuring that we have security in this country. I will give an example: recently, the Federal Government has demonstrated the capacity by going after Nnamdi Kanu, leading IPOB. I am told he was even arrested in a foreign land with the cooperation of Interpol and so on.”

In my opinion, this is quite a callous statement from the governor of a state. He should know better about the dynamics in the security sector and the government’s efforts in this regard. I am not surprised, to say the least, owing to the cantankerous nature of the governor and his penchant for sponsoring ethnic militias in Benue and some states in Northcentral.

The case of the late notorious militia leader in Benue State, Terwase Akwaza, aka Gana, who met his end on his way to a reception put together by the governor in Markurdi, the state capital, indeed calls to questions on the sincerity of Governor Samuel Ortom in addressing the security challenges in the state. It is also baffling how a governor can throw caution into the wind in categorising the Fulani ethnic group. This is also a story for another day.

I would, at this point, advise Governor Samuel Ortom to come out and tell the world that all the noise he has been making about Fulani herders is to give a dog a bad name to hang it. He must also say to the world how much of Benue money he has invested in cattle rearing. To consolidate his grip on the business in the North Central, he must do all to paint the herders in a bad light and also pitch the people against them.

This is the summation of it all and the obsession of governor Samuel Ortom with herders and President Muhammadu Buhari. And against what he has made the unsuspecting members of the general public believe. But for how long does he intend to continue in this deceit? As funny as this might sound, the governor recently commissioned a borehole as his capital project. In an attempt to divert attention from the backlash, he brought a new dimension to the security situation and tried to lump Igboho and Kanu’s arrest as a most suitable topic, and not the fact that he cannot govern Benue state.

For Governor Samuel Ortom, it’s one day, one lie. I wouldn’t be surprised if most of the attacks on farmers in Benue state were planned by his team to attract public sympathy and divert attention from his crass ineptitude. Governor Samuel Ortom is a man without principles. After all, he is a professional driver with a Diploma in Salesmanship. Such a man cannot be circumspect in his public conduct.

Federal Government spends N122 billion on the Johnson & Johnson Covid-19 vaccine

0

On Thursday, the federal government provided an update on its efforts to combat the COVID-19 epidemic in the country, stating that it has spent N122 billion on Johnson & Johnson vaccines for the general public.

It did say, however, that the number of delta variant cases reported so far across the country did not require a lockdown like the one that occurred after the pandemic last year.

The government took notice of the physicians’ ongoing strike, which began at the beginning of the month under the auspices of the National Association of Resident Doctors (NARD), and threatened to implement the “no work, no pay” policy if they did not return to work.
Meanwhile, the cholera outbreak is said to have spread to 22 states, infecting 31,000 individuals and killing 816 people.

Dr Faisal Shuiab, Executive Director/CEO of the National Primary Healthcare Development Agency (NPHCDA), said the federal government has procured over 29 million single dose of the dreaded Coronavirus pandemic (COVID-19) in order to further combat the spread of the disease in the country (over N122 billion).
He claimed that this would allow the country to vaccinate 70% of the population who were eligible.

According to him, the 177,600 doses of Johnson & Johnson vaccines that arrived in the country on Monday were part of a total of 29 million doses that the government had procured.

“Lockdown is a very, very last measure that countries are taking, because lockdown stifles economic activity, restricts your own freedom, and your business – corporate business, government business, private business – all are affected,” said Minister of Health, Dr. Osagie Ehanire, while speaking on the third wave of Covid-19 caused by the delta variant.

“As a result, it’s not something you can do casually. And, of course, we learned a lot of lessons when we were forced to have that lockdown at the start. You know, back then, the government gave palliatives to help people cope with the effects; if they couldn’t go to market, they couldn’t do business. However, this is not the government’s goal. A lockdown is something that no government likes to do. In places where they have faced a real danger, such as the United Kingdom, they have had to implement what is known as a precision lockdown. In reality, Israel recently declared that it is implementing a lockdown, although it is not a generalized lockdown, but rather a targeted lockdown of specific places.

“Many countries use what is known as precision lockdown to ensure that not everyone is affected, but only particular areas are, in order to avoid too much economic and social harm. And we are not yet to the point where we feel the need to go into lockdown mode. And, as I speak to you, several countries are on some form of lockdown. If my memory serves me well, at least six or seven countries are implementing some type of lockdown. Right now, we don’t have that on the table.”

Under the auspices of the National Association of Resident Doctors (NARD), the minister also used the forum to appeal to striking doctors, saying that going on strike in the middle of the third wave of the Covid-19 pandemic, with the arrival of the Delta variant, cholera outbreaks in 22 states, and Marburg virus (similar to Ebola) outbreaks, was not only dangerous but unconscionable.

If the physicians continued on continuing their strike, he said the federal government would not hesitate to implement the International Labour Organization’s “No Work, No Pay” principle, emphasizing that they would not be compensated from tax payers’ money for doing nothing.
He also denied threatening to fire resident doctors, who have been on strike since August 2 over alleged bad working conditions, explaining that all of his interactions and conversations thus far have been to persuade them to end their strike.

Ehanire went on to say that the physicians’ strike was not a suitable moment for them to go on strike.
“We’re on strike for the third time this year,” he said. That is not acceptable. We’ve made an appeal to them. We’ve been holding lengthy discussions with young doctors to explain to them that they, too, have a responsibility to their country.

“Every country in a difficult circumstance should recognize that accountability rests with all of us; if you have an issue or a grudge, talk about it. If we can’t fix it right now, let’s keep talking about it until we come up with a solution, but don’t stop working.

“I believe Nigeria is the only country in the world today where doctors are refusing to work in the face of a national security threat. So that’s what we’ve suggested. There hasn’t been any danger. Nobody made any threats. All we’re doing is pleading. We’re all doctors who went through the same residency program.

“We’re saying now isn’t the time; let’s keep talking about it.” Do not endanger people’s lives. That’s what the Labour Minister and the Health Minister have been saying. Nobody has been threatened in any way.”

“Yes, but that’s a regular thing,” the minister remarked when reminded of the threats of no work, no pay. That is the suggestion of the International Labour Organization (ILO), which states that if you did not work, why would you take… Your wage is paid using public funds.

“So, why should you be paid if you didn’t work, because if that’s the case, you can be encouraged to stay at home for six months and your paycheck comes from public funds, from taxpayers’ money, when you haven’t done anything for the community?”

“So, no work, no pay isn’t just a government regulation; it’s explicitly written in the International Labour Organization that if you don’t work, if you haven’t provided any service, you can’t expect regulation, because you can’t go to the market and buy anything for nothing. You must put something down, work must be put down.

“You can’t just go to the market and take anything you want without paying for it. As a result, if you labor, you will be compensated. We also believe that the government should fulfill its commitments to pay what has been agreed upon. We’ve stated that we’ll press for it, and we’re working with the salaries and wages commission and the head of service to do so, as well as paying all insurance dues.

“However, we cannot go against the ILO’s recommendation to pay individuals who do not work. I mean, I believe you can defend that viewpoint in front of God and man, but there are no threats. These young doctors are professionals, but they are also young people, whom we must mentor and treat to the best of our abilities.

“So, the strike isn’t something we want right now. We’d want to use this platform once more to ask doctors to return to work, and we’d like to bargain. That is something we can accomplish as a group. The Ministry of Health assists them in a variety of ways. But part of the issue is that some of their grievances, or demands, are directed at state governments rather than the federal government. So, why go on a statewide strike if the state government has not paid some people’s salaries?

“We say if you want to talk to the state, I’ll back you up and make an appeal to the state. Seven of the original 12 requests they made were connected to the government. Because they are not federal, the federal government cannot compel a state to pay you a specific salary. However, many of the issues that concern us at the federal level aren’t even related to the Ministry of Health.

“However, we support them and believe that a strike is not an effective tool to deploy. And especially when the country’s health is in jeopardy, when people may volunteer to work in other countries. Now is not the time to discontinue your own service. And I believe we will continue to urge young doctors not to use strike as a tool, especially at a time when the country is in desperate need of help.”

Professor Mojisola Adeyeye, Director General of the National Agency for Food Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC), explained that recent delays in the use of moderna vaccines donated by the US were due to laboratory testing, where some insignificant quantities had bar-coding errors that had to be sorted.

According to her, NAFDAC has been working around the clock to rectify minor issues that had nothing to do with vaccine quality, and that 12,000 Nigerians experienced mild side effects during prior vaccination campaigns.

Dr Chikwe Ihekweazu, Director General of the National Centre for Disease Control (NCDC), stated the latest cholera outbreak had now spread to 22 states across the federation, with over 31,000 individuals sick and 816 deaths.
