Chaos reigns in Kabul airport as Afghans and foreigners attempt to flee

0

The US, the UK, Germany, Canada, the UAE, and a number of other countries are all attempting to evacuate their citizens from the country.

Thousands of Afghans, foreign diplomats, and government officials attempted to flee the country shortly after the Taliban took power, causing chaos at Kabul’s airport.

Because the Taliban had taken over the presidential palace and the elected president had fled the country, access to Hamid Karzai airport, five kilometers from the capital, was only possible through Taliban checkpoints, according to the UK Guardian.

As night fell in Afghanistan’s capital, multiple explosions were heard, and local media reported gunfire near the airport.

The US, the UK, Germany, Canada, the UAE, and a number of other countries are all attempting to evacuate their citizens from the country.

The civilian side of the airport came under fire on Sunday, and by Monday morning, there were reports of US troops firing into the air to disperse the crowds.

The US military has secured the site and taken control of air traffic control, according to the BBC, in order to evacuate American and allied personnel.

“Foreign embassies warned their nationals and Afghan citizens that going to the airport was dangerous and that they should only go if they were told to. Embassy personnel are being flown to the airport’s military side, which is manned by US troops.”

For the most part, commercial flights have been halted, leaving hundreds of Afghans and other foreign nationals stranded at the airport.

The Taliban declared victory after the government collapsed on Sunday. President Ashraf Ghani has taken refuge in another country.

Mr Ghani stated that he did so in order to avoid bloodshed.

The Taliban, he continued, are now facing a “new historical test.” “Either they will protect Afghanistan’s name and honor, or they will give other places and networks a higher priority.”

“The Taliban must provide assurance to all Afghans, tribes, segments, sisters and women, and make clear plans and share them with the public in order to gain legitimacy and the hearts and minds of the people,” he said, without revealing where he had gone.

The militants’ return to power brings an end to a US-led coalition’s nearly two-decade presence in the country.

The group was able to seize control after the majority of foreign troops withdrew.

Over the weekend, US President Joe Biden defended the troop withdrawal, saying that a “endless American presence in the middle of another country’s civil war” could not be justified.

JAMB sets a date for determining the cut-off mark for admission

The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) sets a date for determining the cut-off mark for admission.

The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has set August 31 as the deadline for determining the minimum cut-off mark for tertiary institution admission for the 2021/2022 academic year.

Officials from JAMB, heads of tertiary institutions, the ministry of education, and other key stakeholders will attend the meeting.

The meeting, which will be chaired by Minister of Education, Adamu Adamu, will also discuss other admission issues in addition to determining the cut-off mark.

Stakeholders will evaluate the 2020 admissions process, present application statistics, and discuss candidate performance in the recently completed JAMB exams during the meeting.
The meeting would kickstart admission processes into tertiary institutions across the country, according to a release signed by JAMB Head of Media, Dr. Fabian Benjamin.

The meeting will also decide on acceptable minimum admissions standards to be used in all admissions conducted by all Nigerian tertiary institutions, according to the statement.

Last year, the cut-off mark for university admission was 160, while polytechnics had a cut-off of 120, and colleges of education had a cut-off of 100.

Following their trip to the United Kingdom, President Buhari and others have been placed in isolation

0

President Muhammadu Buhari and members of his delegation have been placed in isolation after returning from a two-week trip to London, United Kingdom.

This measure could be linked to media reports that President Buhari and some members of his delegation were seen in close contact with officials from the Nigerian High Commission in London who tested positive for coronavirus upon arrival at the airport.

According to ChannelsTV, the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Publicity, Garba Shehu, made the announcement on Sunday, August 15, 2021.

Shehu explained that the decision was made in accordance with the Nigerian Centre for Disease Control’s (NCDC) international travel guidelines.

The Minister of Foreign Affairs, Geoffrey Onyeama; the Minister of State for Education, Chukwuemeka Nwajiuba; the Director-General of the National Intelligence Agency, Ambassador Ahmed Rufai Abubakar; and the National Security Adviser, Major General Babagana Munguno were among the members of the President’s delegation to the United Kingdom (retired).

What you should be aware of.

On July 26, 2021, President Muhammadu Buhari visited London, United Kingdom, to attend the Global Education Summit on Financing the Global Partnership for Education (GPE) 2021-2025 and to see his doctors for a medical checkup.

He returned to the country just a day ago after being gone for nearly 19 days.
During his visit, Buhari met with and hosted a number of dignitaries, including UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson, who assured Buhari that the UK stands ready to help Nigeria in its fight against terrorism.

The Nigerian High Commission in London has announced that it will be closed for ten days to allow those in contact with its officials who have tested positive for Covid-19 to be isolated.

North Carolina law allows teenage girls to marry

0

North Carolina is known for its coasts, mountains, and as the state that was “first in flight,” but it has recently gained a more shady reputation as a regional destination for adults looking to marry minors.

State legislators are close to passing a bill that would reduce the state’s allure as a destination for child brides, but would still fall short of a nationwide effort to raise the age to 18. The proposed legislation would raise the minimum marriage age from 14 to 16 years old and provide a four-year age gap between a 16-year-old and their spouse.

Drew Reisinger, the register of deeds in Buncombe County, stated, “We will have moved the needle and made North Carolina no longer at the bottom of the barrel of states.” “We’re still going to be putting a lot of youngsters in danger,” he remarked.

According to Reisinger, the county, which includes the prominent tourist city of Asheville, attracts a large number of adult and child brides from adjacent states such as Georgia, Kentucky, South Carolina, and Tennessee, all of which have recently raised the minimum marriage age.

Reisinger noted that two-thirds of marriage applications in Buncombe County last year involving at least one person under the age of 18 came from persons outside of North Carolina, noting that a 49-year-old man and a 17-year-old girl recently arrived from Kentucky seeking a license.

He remarked, “North Carolina is one of the kindest places in the South to give them a safe haven.”

According to Unchained at Last, a nonprofit organization dedicated to stopping child and forced marriages in the United States, the state is now one of 13 that allows children under the age of 16 to marry. According to the organisation, nine of those states have no specified minimum age, instead relying on case law or a judge’s decision.

Children as young as 14 years old can marry in North Carolina if they become pregnant and a court agrees. Otherwise, with parental consent, children as young as 16 can marry. Alaska is the only other state with a legislation that expressly permits 14-year-old marriages.

According to a study by the International Center for Research on Women, a research institute and rights organization for women and children, nearly 8,800 minors were listed on marriage licenses in North Carolina between 2000 and 2015, putting the state among the top five in the country for child marriages. According to the organisation, 93 percent of the marriage applications it analyzed from 2000 to 2019 had a kid marrying an adult.

One of the study’s co-authors, Lyric Thompson, said, “It undermines the assumption that if child marriage occurs, it will be the Romeo-and-Juliet scenario of two 17-year-olds who can’t wait to love each other.”

However, progress has been gradual in North Carolina, where some lawmakers believe that certain marriages involving children are still permissible.

Sen. Vickie Sawyer, a Davidson County Republican, said, “It’s a generational gap.” “It was the older members — Democrats and Republicans alike — who had those personal stories of family members who had married and had it work out.”

Sawyer was a proponent of a bill that would have raised the legal drinking age to 18 years old. Instead, a compromise bill that received unanimous Senate approval in May and House approval this week would raise the minimum marriage age to 16 without exceptions, including pregnancy. Even those as young as 16 or 17 would require parental consent or a judge’s ruling that the marriage would be in the “best interests of an underage party.”

“As a conservative Christian, I am a strong advocate of the sacrament of marriage,” said Rep. Kristin Baker of Cabarrus County, who helped steer the bill through the House.

“As a child psychiatrist, I am committed to safeguarding our most vulnerable children and improving their chances for a healthy and happy future,” she stated. “I believe this bill accomplishes those goals.”

The bill’s proposed maximum age gap of four years is modeled after statutory rape statutes, which make having sexual intercourse with someone much older a serious felony for a juvenile. The bill needs one more Senate vote before reaching to Democratic Gov. Roy Cooper’s desk, where it is expected to be signed into law this week.

Unchained at Last and the International Center for Research on Women are two organizations advocating for states to raise the marriage age to 18 without exceptions. Six states have met that criterion, the most recent being New York, which did so last month.

Former child brides such as Judy Wiegand of Kentucky, who spoke before a North Carolina House committee in June to urge legislators to modify the legislation, have lent their support to the groups.

“It is the government’s responsibility to protect all children,” Wiegand told legislators. In the 1970s, Wiegand married an older adolescent male, the father of her child, when she was 13 years old. She said that the law left her mostly unprotected against an abusive spouse until she reached adulthood.

Former child brides in North Carolina who have been contacted by lobbyists say they are too traumatized by their experiences to appear publicly before legislators. Instead, women like Wiegand have spoken forward: “I’m testifying in favor of the law because I don’t feel like someone did it for me,” she said.

Jean Fields, who married a guy in his twenties at the age of 15 in 1965, is another woman eager to come out. By the age of 21, Fields had three children. She eventually divorced her spouse after years of verbal abuse and belittlement, according to her.

Fields, who is now 72, has another married name that she does not wish to reveal in order to save her extended family any embarrassment. She stated in a phone interview that after divorcing her husband, she raised her children, went back to school, and now owns two businesses. Despite her eventual success, she advises others against marrying young.

“I regret that I never had the chance to be a teenager,” she expressed sadness.

Last year, the number of Buncombe County marriage applications that involved at least one person under the age of 18 and originated from people outside of North Carolina made up two-thirds of all applications involving an underage applicant, not two-thirds of all marriage applications in the county, as previously stated.

Lagos joins forces with a US corporation to investigate the $50 billion global solar sector

0

The Lagos State Government is collaborating with the International Information Technology and Application Solar (IITA-Solar) of the United States to investigate opportunities in the $50 billion global solar market, which has the potential to create millions of new jobs and businesses. According to reports, the sector employed 11.5 million people worldwide last year.

Mrs Yetunde Arobieke, the Commissioner for Wealth Creation and Employment, said during the launch of the global certification on solar technology training for unemployed youths in Lagos that renewable energy has continued to bring socio-economic benefits by creating numerous jobs and business opportunities around the world, and that the government was ready to build youths’ capacities.

With rising energy demand, the Lagos administration would foster youth entrepreneurship and take initiatives to use local capabilities to harness the city’s renewable potential for industrial development, according to the Commissioner.

According to her, establishing a coherent policy framework that drives the energy transition has resulted in significantly bigger employment growth in renewables around the world.

She stated that the collaboration with IITA-Solar sought to provide training for a global certification in solar technology, while NABCEP will equip participants with the skills needed to install and operate generation systems such solar farms with voltages up to 16,000 volts and transformers.

She estimated that 280 young people would benefit from the training, which would include everything from solar energy to solar panel installation. It consists of both classroom and hands-on instruction.

The graduates, she claims, will be skilled and accredited solar PV design and installation professionals.

She went on to say that they would have the confidence and connections to succeed in the rapidly increasing renewable energy market.

According to her, the global energy market is speeding up, as is the unrelenting shift to renewable energy.

Toks Onabanjo, IITA Edu’s Program Coordinator, stated that solar power generation has emerged as one of the most attractive industries due to the rapid acceptance of alternative energy generation capacities.

According to him, this has sped up the market’s expansion.

According to him, the deployment of distributed solar PV systems in households, as well as commercial and industrial buildings, appears to be a growing market segment around the world, with young people benefiting from it.

He described the training as a terrific way for young people to get jobs and create new enterprises in future solar projects.

Meanwhile, the global solar panel industry is predicted to soar to more than $130 billion by 2030, owing to a global move toward renewable energy.

Police rescue 33 as IGP deploys Joint-Crack Team to Jos

0

Twenty individuals were arrested and 30 others were rescued by the Nigeria Police Force on Sunday in connection with the attacks in Plateau state.

Suspected Irigwe militants allegedly attacked and killed some Muslims returning to Akure, Ondo state, from Bauchi, where they had gone to attend an Islamic program, on Saturday at Rukuba Road in Jos North local government area of the state.

In a statement issued Sunday in Abuja, Force Public Relations Officer (FPRO) CP Frank Mba asked for calm and assured that criminals would be apprehended and dealt with appropriately.

“The Inspector General of Police, IGP Usman Baba, has directed the urgent deployment of a Police Intervention Team to Plateau State to conduct on-the-spot assessments and guarantee enhanced, coordinated response to protect the community and boost public confidence in the impacted area(s).”

“The deployment comes after an unfortunate attack on innocent civilians in Rukuba Community in Plateau State’s Jos North Local Government Area on Saturday, August 14, 2021.

“The Police Intervention Team is directed by DIG Sanusi N. Lemu, the North-Central geopolitical zone’s coordinating DIG and Deputy Inspector General of Police in charge of Finance and Administration.

“Police Tactical Units, the Police Mobile Force (PMF), the Counter Terrorism Unit (CTU), and Police Special Forces, among others, have been deployed to safeguard communities, prevent additional assaults, and bring the culprits to justice.

“The Force Criminal Investigations Department (FCID) and the Force Intelligence Bureau have also deployed investigators and clandestine agents (FIB).

“In the ongoing investigations and rescue efforts, the operatives are expected to give extra investigative, intelligence, and forensic support to the Plateau State Police Command.”

The IGP was also reported by the Police spokesman as condemning the attacks, even as the statement appealed for calm and assured victims and families that the Police were working with the military, other security agencies, and the state government to bring culprits to justice.

According to Mba, the Police Commissioner urged inhabitants in the affected areas to assist security personnel assigned to the hotspot by providing important information that would lead to the arrest of other criminals and prevent additional attacks.

Survivors.

Meanwhile, Malam Sabo Umar, secretary of the state chapter of Fityanul Islam of Nigeria, acknowledged the rescue effort.

Umar, who is currently the caretaker of the rescued victims at a state government-provided accommodation location in Jos, told one of our reporters on Sunday that the rescued persons had been brought to him.

“So far, 34 people have been rescued by a combination of police and military troops and officers,” he stated. As you can see from where I am staying in the state government’s accommodations, 33 people have been rescued so far, and many more are still missing.

“One of the passengers called to say he arrived in Abuja, and one of the drivers called to say he escaped,” he said, adding that 19 others were still being treated at the hospital.

Lalong establishes a curfew.

In a similar event, Governor Simon Lalong has declared a 24-hour curfew in Jos North, while the 6pm to 6am curfew in Jos South and Bassa local government areas remains in effect.

“Following the regrettable breach of peace on 14th August 2021 at Rukuba road in Jos North LGA, in which a convoy of commuters was ambushed, resulting in the deaths of innocent people, I have received briefings on the situation from the relevant heads of security agencies.

“According to the sources, 23 of those attacked died, while another 23 were injured and are still getting care. The other 26 people were unharmed when they were rescued. Twenty people have been arrested so far, and security authorities are undertaking investigations to figure out what’s going on.

“After reviewing the reports and keeping a close eye on the situation, the government is concerned about the ongoing tensions and reported attempts by certain individuals to take the law into their own hands by threatening to attack individuals, private facilities, and public property.

“To avert further aggravation of the situation and to protect citizens’ lives and property, I have directed the implementation of a curfew on Jos North, Bassa, and Jos South Local Governments from 6 p.m. to 6 a.m. beginning today, 14 August 2021.

“The curfew will be maintained pending a review by the State Security Council.

“All residents are therefore directed to follow the direction in order for security forces to preserve peace and order in the affected areas and deal with anyone attempting to create unrest by exploiting the circumstances to commit crime,” he said.

NSCIA, JNI, CAN, and NGF all advise caution.

In a statement issued on Sunday, the Nigeria Supreme Council of Islamic Affairs (NSCIA) condemned the Jos killings and warned against retaliation.

The National Security and Civilian Intelligence Agency (NSCIA), which is directed by Sultan of Sokoto Saad Abubakar, has also asked for calm and understanding.

“…the Council urges security services to apprehend the perpetrators of the heinous acts and guarantee that proper justice is served,” The Director of Administration at the NSCIA

In a statement, Zubairu Usman-Ugwu said.

In addition, the statement denounced the Saturday slaughter of a group of innocent Muslims returning from Bauchi to Akure, Ondo State.

“While reiterating the remarks of their Excellencies, the Governors of Plateau and Ondo States that it was a matter of mistaken identity and not targeted specifically at Muslims, the Council urges all Muslims to remain calm and refrain from taking laws into their own hands. The Council reiterates that no human life deserves to be squandered on religious or ethnic grounds.

“The Council is keeping an eye on the investigation and will see to it that justice is served.

“O you who have believed!” exclaims the Islamic injunction. If some transgressors bring you news that requires action, verify it carefully (before believing and acting on it), lest you harm a people in ignorance and later regret what you have done” (Qur’an 49:6), we reassure all peace-loving individuals and groups that appropriate actions will be taken following a thorough investigation.

“In the interim, as attempts are made to identify the eight missing Muslims, the Council urges security agencies to apprehend all those responsible for the heinous acts and ensure that proper justice is served.

“The Council expresses its condolences to all Muslims, especially Sheikh Dahiru Bauchi, the host of the religious gathering from which the victims were returning,” the statement stated.

JNI reports on a planned pogrom that resulted in the death of tens of thousands of people.

In a separate statement, the Jama’atu Nasril Islam condemned the killings, calling them a “deliberately planned pogrom,” and demanding the government to uncover and arrest the perpetrators.

The JNI described the killings as bestial and brutal in a statement issued Sunday by Secretary-General Dr. Khalid Abubakar Aliyu, emphasizing that it was not a case of mistaken identity but rather a well-planned massacre by the attackers for whatever cause.

“The awful Rukuba Road catastrophe, which culminated in the slaughter of over 22 innocent, defenseless Muslims returning from Bauchi state to Ikare, Ondo state, en route Jos, was received with extreme anguish by JNI. This conduct is the pinnacle of heinousness and savagery. We are pleading with the federal and Plateau state governments to guarantee that the culprits of this horrific atrocity be apprehended and prosecuted as soon as possible

“We are convinced that this unjustified onslaught on these defenseless Muslims was a well-planned pogrom. It’s particularly terrible that men in positions of authority will refer to this heinous act as a mistaken identity; does this not imply that ethnic or religious profiling is now the norm? No life is worth taking in the manner prescribed.

“The Muslim community remembers with fondness Major General Idris M. Alkali’s untimely assassination by the Du community, who ditched his vehicle in a pond and put his body into a ditch. The fact that the perpetrators apprehended have not been brought to justice is heartbreaking.

“We would want to emphasize that, no matter how long it takes, anarchy and disorder will invariably become the exclusive province of those impacted as long as the government and its authorities continue to approach major security concerns with levity. It should be remembered that the late General distinguished himself as a superb gentleman while serving the Nigerian Army for 35 years. The offenders have yet to be brought to justice.

“What more do we expect from regular unarmed individuals who were slain in cold blood, according to the PPRO, Plateau State Command, but the numbers might be far higher because no one is talking about the critically injured? Nonetheless, we anticipate a clear and firm response. We do, however, urge Ondo state’s Ikare Muslim community to remain peaceful.

“The JNI is well aware that Muslims from Ningi in Bauchi state were kidnapped and slaughtered in Langtang, Plateau state, a few years ago. On multiple occasions, Muslims from the states of Gombe, Adamawa, Yobe, and Borno have been kidnapped and slaughtered near Riyom. In 2008, Muslims traveling from Chad Republic to Riyom were slain.

“Just like any other tourist, Muslims must pass through Plateau state on their way to their various destinations. As a result, the late General Alkali was brutally assassinated just because he was a Muslim road traveler. Nobody has been brought to justice in any of these cases. It’s a well-known fact.

Win the Anambra governorship, the PDP needs Uba and Ukachukwu – Ekwunife

0

Senator Uche EDkwunife, the chairperson of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDPAnambra )’s State Governorship Campaign Council, has stated that the party’s leaders and stakeholders, including Chief Chris Uba and Linus Ukachukwu, will need to work together to defeat the ruling All Progressive Grand Alliance (APGA) on November 6, 2021.

Speaking at the official inauguration of the PDP Campaign Council in Awka, the state capital, on Sunday, Ekwunife said such people who had worked in the past for the party’s advancement in one way or another should not be wished away.

“No matter how you look at it, Chris Uba, Linus Ukachukwu, and others are still our leaders. We require them for the party’s continued expansion and growth, as well as to win the upcoming governorship election. Even if they’re angry, we’ll keep pleading with them and bringing them closer to us so that we can go into the election together. They can’t be wished away in any way, no matter what happens,” she said.

Ekwunife also urged members of the campaign council to view their roles as a call to duty, which she said would hopefully lead to the party’s victory.

“I will encourage all members of the campaign council to see their positions as a call to duty. We should see ourselves as deserving ambassadors for the party, who must prioritize the party’s interests.

“I’ll also beg any member who isn’t interested or believes he won’t be able to commit to the job to excuse himself. It is commitment, not numbers, that counts in any campaign. It’s preferable to be five in umber and committed than to be numerous but uncommitted. Valentine Ozigbo is a providential product, so we must rally behind him to help him win,” she said.

Dr. Alex Obiogbolu, the campaign organization’s Director General, thanked the party’s stakeholders, as well as members of the campaign organization, for their efforts in uniting the party and moving it forward. He also urged party supporters to approach the upcoming elections with sincerity and unity of purpose, so that the party would emerge victorious on November 6, 2021. He also revealed that the party’s campaign council would be inaugurated in all 21 LGAs and 326 wards in the state in the coming days for effective grassroots campaigning.

Mr. Valentine Ozigbo, the party’s governorship candidate, thanked the campaign council and all PDP supporters for promising to support him throughout the election until victory is achieved in his remarks at the event.

Boko Haram Massive Surrender Worries Borno Leaders

0

The current massive surrender of Boko Haram fighters and their families, according to Borno State Governor Babagana Umara Zulum and some prominent leaders in the state, puts the state in a difficult situation.

Governor Zulum made the remarks while speaking to military officers and community leaders in Bama and Gwoza over the weekend.

According to him, the situation requires representatives from attacked communities to come together and critically evaluate the benefits and drawbacks of surrendering, as well as the implications of doing so, in order to agree on a well-thought-out framework.

Before speaking to military commanders at brigades in Gwoza and Bama, and community leaders at the palaces of the emir of Gwoza and Shehu of Bama, Zulum visited the local government areas of Gwoza and Bama for humanitarian and developmental activities. In both towns, the governor delivered the same message.

“We (in Borno) are in a very difficult situation as insurgents continue to surrender. We must choose between two extreme scenarios and make a critical decision about our future. We must choose between an endless war or a cautious acceptance of surrendered terrorists, which is extremely painful and difficult for anyone who has lost a loved one, difficult for all of us, including military personnel who have lost colleagues and volunteers,” he said.

The Shehu of Borno, Alhaji Abubakar Umar Garbai El-Kanemi, said the Boko Haram terrorists’ massive surrender to the military was a welcome development for both the state government and the victims of terrorism.

The army’s Safe Corridor program, according to Shehu, led to the de-radicalization of repentant terrorists in Gombe State, but citizens and victims of the terrorists would find it difficult, if not impossible, to accept the repentant insurgents’ reintegration into the destroyed communities.

El-Kanemi, who recalled how Boko Haram destroyed Bama town and the College of Education in September 2014, said people’s fears about the 12-year insurgency still exist and will continue, particularly in communities where surrendered terrorists will be reintegrated.

He bemoaned the fact that the insurgency had killed 13 district heads and a large number of ward heads in his emirate, which encompassed 16 local government areas in the state.

When asked if the people will forgive the repentant terrorists, the royal father said it is easy to forgive for the destruction of many lives and property, but difficult to forget the wanton deaths in his chiefdom’s various communities.

An elder statesman, Alhaji Ahmed Ashemi, responded by saying that the repentant terrorists’ crimes were so heinous that returning them to their original residence where they committed the crime would be counterproductive.

This, according to Alhaji Ashemi, is because people who knew what they had done and saw them return with even palliatives and other such things may believe that there is profit in crime, and some may even take the law into their own hands. He noted that if terrorists who murdered people’s fathers, mothers, and even raped their sisters in front of their eyes were to re-enter society and start mixing, it could create a new social problem.

“However, if you say you’ll prosecute them, you’ll also prevent them from abandoning the crime and surrendering, regardless of the difficulties they face in the bush. So, I believe the best thing the government can do is remove them from the areas where they committed these crimes, teach them skills, rehabilitate them, and relocate them to a faraway location for an extended period of time, if not forever. “Some of these people will not be able to easily reintegrate into the society in which they committed such heinous crimes. Accepting their surrender and granting them amnesty is a good thing because it will put an end to all of this nonsense. It is critical to understand how to manage development. It could be counterproductive if it is not well managed,” Ashemi said.

NDLEA arrest of one Muffat Ekong, a former military officer

0

The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has announced the arrest of one Muffat Ekong, a former military officer, for alleged cannabis possession.

According to NDLEA spokesman Femi Babafemi, Ekong was detained with Frank Iredia Obamwonyi “on Wednesday, August 11th, with 286.3 kilograms of cannabis at Ogwashi Uku, Delta state on their way to Enugu state on their way to Enugu state.”

In a similar incident, Babafemi claimed that on August 13, the agency’s Benue state command detained one Eze Victor Ezenwanne, an alleged interstate trafficker, with 65.436 kg of diazepam tablets at Apir-Aliade road in Makurdi.

Adeyemi Segun Olamide was detained the same day in Maiduguri, Borno state, with 650 grams of skunk, according to the report.

Nnadi Nora Chinyere, who was allegedly in possession of 100 wraps of heroin and two parcels of the same material, was detained at the Murtala Mohammed international airport in Ikeja, Lagos, according to the NDLEA.

“On August 3, 2021, Nnadi was apprehended during the outward clearing of passengers on a Qatar Airways flight to Florentine, Italy. Babafemi stated the pills seized on her were hidden in five containers of hair relaxer cream.

“In a similar vein, on Thursday, August 12th, 2021, officers from the Agency’s MMIA Command seized a cargo of illicit substances intended for the United Kingdom at the airport’s NAHCO export shed.

“Further examination revealed that the shipment contains 66.600 kilos of cannabis sativa, 1.600 kilograms of heroin, and 1.450 kilograms of cocaine, totaling 69.65 kilograms, all concealed inside cosmetics.”

On August 5, narcotic officers on routine patrol at the NAHCO export facility confiscated another consignment of 25.8 kilograms of cocaine and cannabis concealed inside groceries bound for London, UK.

On August 7, two individuals in a bus from Lagos to Kogi state were also apprehended.

“Six parcels of skunk weighing 3.6kg, 30 pinches of Crack Cocaine weighing 87grams, and six sachets of Arizona weighing 265grams were recovered from the vehicle,” according to the statement.

Buba Marwa, the chairman of the Nigerian Democratic Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), praised the officers for their arrests and “charged them and other commands to maintain the current momentum, assuring them that President Muhammadu Buhari recognizes their efforts and will continue to motivate them to do more.”

n Cote d’Ivoire, a new Ebola case has been confirmed

0

.The Ebola virus has been found in an 18-year-old Guinean lady in Abidjan, according to the Health Ministry of Cote d’Ivoire.

According to a press release from Health Minister Pierre Dimba, the Pasteur Institute of Cote d’Ivoire investigated the woman’s blood sample collected on Friday and informed local health authorities of the positive case on Saturday.

Mr Dimba said the woman arrived in Abidjan on Wednesday by vehicle from the Guinean city of Labe, and that she was “diagnosed and taken care of immediately” by health services on Thursday.

“This is an isolated and imported case,” the minister stated, adding that the patient is being quarantined at the University Hospital Centre of Treichville in Abidjan’s epidemic disease treatment center.

Mr Dimba assured citizens that the government is using “all steps that have been effectively tested in the past” to control the sickness.

Mr Dimba stated that the government will push vaccination of frontline health staff, patient’s direct contacts, and security forces at entry points.

The participants decided to reinvigorate community event-based surveillance for Ebola and boost cross-border engagement with Guinea during an emergency inter-ministerial meeting conducted on Saturday under the auspices of Prime Minister Patrick Achi.

Guinea confirmed a new Ebola outbreak in Gouecke, a sub-prefecture in the Nzerekore Prefecture, on February 14. In the Democratic Republic of Congo’s North Kivu province, there have been new cases of Ebola.

The West African Ebola virus outbreak, which mostly affected Guinea, Liberia, and Sierra Leone from 2014 to 2016, claimed over 11,300 fatalities and resulted in over 28,600 cases.
