Buhari’s visit will benefit Imo – Deputy Speaker

0

Amara Iwuanyanwu, the Deputy Speaker of the Imo State House of Assembly, has stated that the state will benefit from President Muhammadu Buhari’s recent visit.

Buhari’s visit to Imo State, according to Iwuanyanwu, will help the President identify areas where he can help.

The member of the Imo Assembly representing the Nwangele state constituency made the statement in a statement.

According to him, President Muhammadu Buhari’s visit was an opportunity for him to see the work of state Governor Hope Uzodimma.

“The benefits of the presidential visit will be enormous and beneficial to Imo,” he said.

“President Muhammadu Buhari’s state visit to Imo is still a hot topic in the state days after he left.

“For example, the governor embarked on some federal roads that are not actually state roads, but he embarked on them with meager funds because of the viability of those roads.

“So, based on what the president has seen on the ground, he can decide where the federal government can help.

“This presidential visit is historic in multiple ways.”

Teachers are being killed, kidnapped in Nigeria, posing threat to education – ASUSS

0

The Academic Staff Union of Secondary Schools (ASUSS) has expressed regret for the ongoing killings, kidnappings, and harassment of teachers and students across the country, claiming that the heinous acts were negatively impacting teachers’ productivity.

Despite the situation, ASUSS praised Kaduna State Governor Mallam Nasir El-Rufai for hiring 7,600 teachers, as well as Kano and Adamawa for extending members’ retirement to 65 years.

This was stated by the ASUSS CWC in a communique issued after its meeting in Kaduna on Wednesday and made available to journalists by its National President, Samuel Omaji, and Secretary-General, Sola Adigun, who also serves as the Chairman of ASUSS in Ekiti State.

“We appreciate the governor of Kaduna State, Mallam Nasir el-Rufai, for recruiting 7,600 teachers into his 9,000 Secondary School Tutors,” the communique reads. This is commendable because it promotes high-quality, practical education.

R“We applaud Kano State’s government for redeploying 11,000 trained teachers to schools through MDAs to improve teaching and learning. Oyo, Lagos, and the Delta States are also commended for their up-to-date teacher promotion.”

Despite the above incentives to teach, ASUSS was concerned about the country’s insecurity, particularly the constant attacks on schools that result in the murder and kidnapping of teachers and students for ransom.

“That the current insecurity transcends ethnicity and politics; and, for the umpteenth time, the union calls on governments at all levels to be sincere in dealing with security issues as it is their fundamental responsibility,” says the union.

“ASUSS strongly condemns recent student and parent harassment of teachers; case studies include Plateau State, where a student fatally stabbed a teacher, and Ekiti State, where a police officer arrived at his child’s school with a team of three other officers to harass the school principal and teachers, while the police authority has refused to act on ASUSS complaints.”

It went on to say that its members are inextricably committed to the organization’s goals of developing future leaders and that they will work tirelessly to achieve them in order to ensure the meaningful and robust development of education in Nigeria.

ASUSS urged the National Assembly to act quickly on the bills in order to energise better welfare packages for teachers, claiming that delaying action on the bills contradicts President Muhammadu Buhari’s position.

It stated: ” Other state governments should follow the lead of Kano and Adamawa States, which have passed legislation allowing teachers to work longer hours with immediate effect.

“That the union’s leadership is prepared to organize all secondary school tutors in order to scientifically pursue better welfare, improved terms and conditions of service, and to elevate members’ dignity.”

ASUSS called on all other states that have allegedly denied teachers their privileges, rights, and regular emoluments to do the right thing in order to relieve the burdens and pains that their members are experiencing.

In Borno ambush, ISWAP allegedly kills 12 soldiers and vigilantes

Last Sunday, the would-be couple was kidnapped along Ilasa-Ayebode road in Ekiti East council area, according to Tribune Online.

According to sources, the lovers were on their way back from Ado-Ekiti, the state capital, where they had gone to buy some supplies in preparation for their wedding this weekend when they were ambushed by gunmen.

They were said to have been taken to an unknown location before the kidnappers contacted the family on Sunday night and demanded a ransom of N5 million.

FG granted work permits to 12,000 foreigners in Nigeria

The federal government has approved 12,000 expatriate quota licenses for foreigners seeking to work in Nigeria, while 2,000 applications from businesses are being processed.

Interior Minister Rauf Aregbesola’s spokesman, Sola Fasure, revealed this in a statement on Friday.

On the second day of the sixth edition of the Annual Kaduna Economic Investment (KADINVEST) in Kaduna, the minister stated this.

Mr Aregbesola stated that since its inception, the ministry has dealt with 14,690 companies and granted 126,893 quota licenses to expatriates.

“We have registered over 2,000 companies since August 2019, and over 12,000 expatriates have been granted work permits in Nigeria,” he said. “We now handle applications with dispatch, and any firm or organization with a genuine need for expatriates is encouraged to submit their applications. We’ll treat it with the respect it deserves.”

Despite security challenges, the minister emphasized that Nigeria remains a profitable investment destination.

”Despite the difficulties we have faced, it may be of interest to us to know that Nigeria remains an investor’s dream, with abundant raw materials, a highly skilled and affordable workforce, and Africa’s largest market for goods and services. Mr Aregbesola stated in the statement, “The return on investment has always been mouth-watering.”

He praised the Kaduna government, the Nigerian Investment Promotion Commission (NIPC), and the Nigerian Economic Summit Group (NESG) for hosting the summit and selecting the theme of “Towards a Sustainable Knowledge-Based Economy.”

“Looking at the history of economic development, we can see that there is a quantum leap in economic production at the onset of the Industrial Revolution circa 1760 in England, compared to what was achieved during the feudal era,” Mr Aregbesola continued.

“The introduction of machines and factory systems that enabled mass production of goods ushered in a new era of economic prosperity for industrialized nations.”

He noted that the past 50 years had created a huge chasm between former colonial countries and societies still stuck in feudal productions.

“Two and a half centuries from now, the paradigm of production will be dramatically altered by advances in knowledge,” the interior minister predicted. “In the immediate Industrial Revolution era, economic production was based on factors such as proximity to raw materials and markets, among others. As a result, it is said that the concept of comparative advantage favors places where these factors are more important than others.”

Buhari looking for alternative funding for the rail project, says Amaechi

President Muhammadu Buhari, according to Minister of Transportation Rotimi Amaechi, is utilizing alternative funding mechanisms to rehabilitate old rail lines and modernize the rail system in accordance with its 25-year strategic vision.

Mr Amaechi made the remarks at the Department of Economics, Faculty of Social Science, University of Lagos, Akoka’s 2021 Annual Public Lecture on Friday.

The lecture’s topic was “Nigeria’s National Rail Transport Project.”

Mr Buhari’s administration, he claims, has recovered most of the failed locations on the narrow gauge corridor and is also taking precautions in the standard gauge corridor’s Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) report.

He went on to say that all of the new railway project contracts included extensive technology transfer clauses, capacity building, and domestically appropriate knowledge and skill Conversational Skills Ratings ( CSRs).

The minister went on to say that the purpose of establishing rail projects was to lower transportation costs and boost the economy, as economic activity drives development in any country.

He went on to say that if not for a lack of a long-term funding plan, environmental concerns, degraded infrastructure, theft of railway materials, and an outdated legal framework, the project would connect all of the country’s regions with rail transportation.

According to him, the railway project is hampered by a lack of required railway professionals, as well as citizens’ indiscriminate disposal of refuse on railway right-of-way.

The minister then urged community leaders and civil society organizations to join the fight against rail infrastructure vandalism across the country.

Oil trades at $78.09 per barrel, approaching a three-year high

The price of Brent crude rose to a three-year high yesterday, bringing some good news to the Dollar-strapped Nigerian economy amid supply constraints and a drop in crude inventories in the United States, the world’s top oil consumer.

Due to global supply disruptions, energy companies were forced to withdraw large amounts of crude from their inventories.

China’s first public sale of state crude reserves slowed the rally slightly.

Brent futures settled at $78.09 per barrel yesterday evening, while WTI crude in the United States traded at $73.98.

Brent closed at its highest level since October 2018 and WTI at its highest level since July 2021, both for the second day in a row.

Brent gained for the third week in a row, while WTI gained for the fifth, owing to US Gulf Coast output disruptions caused by Hurricane Ida in late August.

According to traders, US oil refiners were looking for alternatives to Gulf crude and were turning to Iraqi and Canadian oil.

Due to under-investment or maintenance delays during the pandemic, some members of the Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries and their Allies, or OPEC, have struggled to increase output.

Russia stated that it would continue to be a reliable energy supplier to global markets. However, Gazprom, the Russian gas giant, has been accused of doing too little to increase natural gas supplies to Europe, where prices have risen dramatically.

Iran, which wants to increase its oil exports, said it would resume talks on resuming compliance with the 2015 Iran nuclear deal “very soon,” but did not specify a time frame.

“Extra Iranian barrels of crude seem unlikely to be a 2021 story,” said Edward Moya, senior market analyst at OANDA, noting that negotiations “will be a long drawn-out process.”

Drillers added 10 oil rigs in the United States this week, bringing the total number of oil and gas rigs to a 14-month high.

According to UBS analysts, Brent could hit $80 by the end of September due to stock draws, lower OPEC production, and stronger Middle East demand.

Due to stock draws, lower OPEC production, and stronger demand in the Middle East, analysts at UBS told Reuters that Brent oil could hit $80 a barrel by the end of September.

“The ongoing drop in oil inventories driven by unplanned supply disruptions may still allow Brent to hit that mark in the coming weeks,” the analysts said.

Surging natural gas prices, according to market analysts, are also attracting the increase, as a gas supply shortage could encourage power utilities to switch from gas to oil if winter turns out to be colder this year.

The rise in crude oil prices means more revenue for Nigeria, but it also means more trouble for the country’s subsidy payments.

The supply crisis affecting the natural gas market, according to Mele Kyari, Group Managing Director of the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC), could push crude oil prices up by $10 a barrel.

A Nigerian as Africa’s best is needed

0

In the European game, I support Liverpool FC of England. When the Reds’ African legion scores goals with aplomb, I can’t help but think of Nigerians working in Europe. My mind immediately went to the annual Africa Footballer of the Year award, knowing that a Nigerian player had not won the award in a long time. With the passage of time, the possibility of a Nigerian winning the award appears to be more of a mirage than a reality. Certainly not due to a lack of quality players.

The three Africans on Liverpool’s payroll, Mohammed Salah (Egyptian), Sadio Mane (Senegalese), and Naby Keita (Guinean), dominated the weekend for the Reds. In one of the Premier League games played last week in England, the trio scored in the Reds’ 3-0 demolition of Crystal Palace at Anfield. Mane scored his 100th goal in England, for the record. But the Senegalese’s biggest achievement on Saturday was scoring against Crystal Palace for the ninth time since he began playing against them.
Mane is the 18th Liverpool player to score 100 goals in all competitions. Many would say it’s incredible, but not because another African in Liverpool, Mohamed Salah, is breaking goals records like they’re going out of style. The Egyptian has four goals in the five-week-old league, keeping him in contention with serial goal-scorer Cristiano Ronaldo, who has three goals. According to the statistics, the race for Africa Footballer of the Year this year will be a straight fight between Mane and Salah. It is worth noting, however, that another African, Riyad Mahrez, who plays for the reigning Premier League champion, could finish the season ahead of the Liverpool duo, but such an upset appears unlikely.

The common thread running through the trio’s playing credentials is their consistency for their clubs and countries over the last five years, with all three serving as captains of their respective national teams. Any Nigerian playing in Europe would have to perform a miracle to beat them. The trio play for teams in the UEFA Champions League, which is another platform where they can earn more points by scoring goals, unlike any Nigerian, who, forgive my arrogance, plays in the lower European tournaments.
Salah, Mane, and the rest of the Nigerian squad are capable of giving Salah, Mane, and the rest of the team a run for their money. They are, however, rising stars who will take time to mature. Victor Osimhen, Kelechi Iheanacho, Samuel Chuwueze, Wilfred Ndidi, Paul Onuachu, Kingsley Michael, Joe Aribo, Taiwo Awoniyi, Kelechi Nwakali, and others are among the contenders for the award that Nigerians dominated in the past. The majority of them are Golden Eaglets, or young people who have come from the country’s Golden Eaglets. However, winning the award requires more than just playing in European leagues. Previous award winners have been distinguished by their personal commitment to the game, discipline, and exemplary character, as well as those who were finalists but did not win.

Will we continue to be awestruck as these threesomes share the Africa Footballer of the Year award? This writer would have mockingly stated that there is no hope for any Nigerian. But I’m forced to reconsider this broad assumption after seeing what another Nigerian, Victor Osimhen, is doing for Napoli FC, the Italian club made famous by the late Diego Armando Maradona. Last week, Osimhen scored a brace that broke the hearts of Leicester FC fans, who watched in disbelief as the Nigerian erased the Foxes’ two-goal advantage in one of the Europa Cup matches.

Osimhen’s rise to prominence in international football is no fluke. FIFA’s deliberate policy of catching footballers young with its novel age-grade competitions is an attestation to his rise to stardom in the elite class. Osimhen was the Golden Eaglets’ top scorer, with pundits predicting that if he improves on his sublime skills and knack for scoring goals, he will paint Europe red with goals.

Even though he had the talent, few expected Osimhen to be the Super Eagles’ top performer. Indeed, his moves between clubs didn’t help matters, but he was fortunate to find his stride while playing for Lille FC in France. After weekly outstanding achievements, winning several Man of the Match awards, and gaining the confidence and respect of his coaches, teammates, and fans, it didn’t take long for him to receive rave reviews.

Osimhen became the heart and soul of his French team, attracting the attention of Nigerian coach Gernot Rohr. He had a successful career with the Belgian national team, culminating in his famous move to Naples to play for Napoli. Rohr’s decision to leave another former Golden Eaglet Kelechi Iheanacho out of the Eagles’ squad for the last Africa Cup of Nations wasn’t well received, with critics claiming that the manager should have looked at Leicester City FC’s pedigree in the game, despite agreeing that Iheanacho had lost form. Given how competitive the Barclays English Premier League is among other European leagues, Iheanacho’s experience towered over what Osimhen was doing for Lille in the French Ligue 1.

Kelechi Iheanacho, who scored six goals and added seven assists at the 2013 U-17 World Cup in Abu Dhabi, was named MVP. In the UAE, he was named MVP and second leading scorer with six goals, trailing only Swede Valmir Berisha’s seven goals. In 27 appearances for the Super Eagles, he has scored nine goals.

Samuel Chukwueze won the Bronze Ball in Chile 2015 after overcoming the setback of his family torching his boots and training gear in an attempt to discourage him from continuing in the sport.

With these promising Nigerian players’ futures bright, it’s only a matter of time before Nigeria reclaims her former dominance in the race for Africa’s best football player. Nigeria’s problem is that there are no strong structures in place across the country to discover, nurture, and expose new talent. One of the nagging issues that arises as a result of this is that young talents soon feel too big for the system and start running their own shows. They quickly lose steam, and Nigeria suffers as a result – examples abound.

The NFF chiefs are sincere in ensuring that only those of the right ages make the Golden Eaglets team – the factory that has produced several kids, many of whom did well, but others who melted away like ice cream under the scorching sun.

Sports are developed in civilized countries through a neighborhood system in which facilities are built to engage youth and keep them away from social vices. Nurseries are used to store the data of those who have been discovered. Such information aids in the development and monitoring of the stars. Furthermore, nurseries lay the groundwork for athletes to learn the fundamentals of the game. Playing styles and patterns that are unique to each country are developed in such factories.

Without the government’s help, sports cannot thrive in Nigeria. It is the responsibility of the government to provide facilities and create an enabling environment for the industry to function with corporate support. If the government’s commitment to sports is known, blue-chip companies will be willing to support the industry. Sports-friendly businesses should be rewarded by the government.

Once the government has persuaded the corporate world to invest in sports programs, the federation should make sure that their foreign coaches are included in the process, so that they are forced to look to the products of such efforts to replace our aging stars, rather than scouring Europe for kids who have never visited this country to play for us.
