According to the News Agency of Nigeria, he returned to the country with a special request from UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres to assist in the restoration of socio-political order in troubled West African countries.

During an audience with Buhari on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly’s 76th Session, Guterres praised the president for his leadership roles in Africa as well as the stabilization of the West African sub-region.

The UN scribe noted that Africa, particularly West Africa, was generally regarded as a bastion of stability and good governance, but expressed grave concern about the recent reversal of fortunes in democratic rule in some parts of the West African sub-region, with coups deposing elected officials.

As a result, he urged Buhari to continue to lead, saying that he looked to Nigeria to help stabilize the sub-democracy region’s and governance.

According to him, President Muhammadu Buhari’s visit was an opportunity for him to see the work of state Governor Hope Uzodimma.

“The benefits of the presidential visit will be enormous and beneficial to Imo,” he said.

“President Muhammadu Buhari’s state visit to Imo is still a hot topic in the state days after he left.

“For example, the governor embarked on some federal roads that are not actually state roads, but he embarked on them with meager funds because of the viability of those roads.

“So, based on what the president has seen on the ground, he can decide where the federal government can help.

“This presidential visit is historic in multiple ways.”

Teachers are being killed, kidnapped in Nigeria, posing threat to education – ASUSS

The Academic Staff Union of Secondary Schools (ASUSS) has expressed regret for the ongoing killings, kidnappings, and harassment of teachers and students across the country, claiming that the heinous acts were negatively impacting teachers’ productivity.

Despite the situation, ASUSS praised Kaduna State Governor Mallam Nasir El-Rufai for hiring 7,600 teachers, as well as Kano and Adamawa for extending members’ retirement to 65 years.

This was stated by the ASUSS CWC in a communique issued after its meeting in Kaduna on Wednesday and made available to journalists by its National President, Samuel Omaji, and Secretary-General, Sola Adigun, who also serves as the Chairman of ASUSS in Ekiti State.

“We appreciate the governor of Kaduna State, Mallam Nasir el-Rufai, for recruiting 7,600 teachers into his 9,000 Secondary School Tutors,” the communique reads. This is commendable because it promotes high-quality, practical education.

R“We applaud Kano State’s government for redeploying 11,000 trained teachers to schools through MDAs to improve teaching and learning. Oyo, Lagos, and the Delta States are also commended for their up-to-date teacher promotion.”

Despite the above incentives to teach, ASUSS was concerned about the country’s insecurity, particularly the constant attacks on schools that result in the murder and kidnapping of teachers and students for ransom.

“That the current insecurity transcends ethnicity and politics; and, for the umpteenth time, the union calls on governments at all levels to be sincere in dealing with security issues as it is their fundamental responsibility,” says the union.

“ASUSS strongly condemns recent student and parent harassment of teachers; case studies include Plateau State, where a student fatally stabbed a teacher, and Ekiti State, where a police officer arrived at his child’s school with a team of three other officers to harass the school principal and teachers, while the police authority has refused to act on ASUSS complaints.”

It went on to say that its members are inextricably committed to the organization’s goals of developing future leaders and that they will work tirelessly to achieve them in order to ensure the meaningful and robust development of education in Nigeria.

ASUSS urged the National Assembly to act quickly on the bills in order to energise better welfare packages for teachers, claiming that delaying action on the bills contradicts President Muhammadu Buhari’s position.

It stated: ” Other state governments should follow the lead of Kano and Adamawa States, which have passed legislation allowing teachers to work longer hours with immediate effect.

“That the union’s leadership is prepared to organize all secondary school tutors in order to scientifically pursue better welfare, improved terms and conditions of service, and to elevate members’ dignity.”

ASUSS called on all other states that have allegedly denied teachers their privileges, rights, and regular emoluments to do the right thing in order to relieve the burdens and pains that their members are experiencing.

The federal government has approved 12,000 expatriate quota licenses for foreigners seeking to work in Nigeria, while 2,000 applications from businesses are being processed.

Interior Minister Rauf Aregbesola’s spokesman, Sola Fasure, revealed this in a statement on Friday.

On the second day of the sixth edition of the Annual Kaduna Economic Investment (KADINVEST) in Kaduna, the minister stated this.

Mr Aregbesola stated that since its inception, the ministry has dealt with 14,690 companies and granted 126,893 quota licenses to expatriates.

“We have registered over 2,000 companies since August 2019, and over 12,000 expatriates have been granted work permits in Nigeria,” he said. “We now handle applications with dispatch, and any firm or organization with a genuine need for expatriates is encouraged to submit their applications. We’ll treat it with the respect it deserves.”

Despite security challenges, the minister emphasized that Nigeria remains a profitable investment destination.

”Despite the difficulties we have faced, it may be of interest to us to know that Nigeria remains an investor’s dream, with abundant raw materials, a highly skilled and affordable workforce, and Africa’s largest market for goods and services. Mr Aregbesola stated in the statement, “The return on investment has always been mouth-watering.”

He praised the Kaduna government, the Nigerian Investment Promotion Commission (NIPC), and the Nigerian Economic Summit Group (NESG) for hosting the summit and selecting the theme of “Towards a Sustainable Knowledge-Based Economy.”

“Looking at the history of economic development, we can see that there is a quantum leap in economic production at the onset of the Industrial Revolution circa 1760 in England, compared to what was achieved during the feudal era,” Mr Aregbesola continued.

“The introduction of machines and factory systems that enabled mass production of goods ushered in a new era of economic prosperity for industrialized nations.”

He noted that the past 50 years had created a huge chasm between former colonial countries and societies still stuck in feudal productions.

“Two and a half centuries from now, the paradigm of production will be dramatically altered by advances in knowledge,” the interior minister predicted. “In the immediate Industrial Revolution era, economic production was based on factors such as proximity to raw materials and markets, among others. As a result, it is said that the concept of comparative advantage favors places where these factors are more important than others.”

He went on to say that all of the new railway project contracts included extensive technology transfer clauses, capacity building, and domestically appropriate knowledge and skill Conversational Skills Ratings ( CSRs).

The minister went on to say that the purpose of establishing rail projects was to lower transportation costs and boost the economy, as economic activity drives development in any country.

He went on to say that if not for a lack of a long-term funding plan, environmental concerns, degraded infrastructure, theft of railway materials, and an outdated legal framework, the project would connect all of the country’s regions with rail transportation.

According to him, the railway project is hampered by a lack of required railway professionals, as well as citizens’ indiscriminate disposal of refuse on railway right-of-way.

The minister then urged community leaders and civil society organizations to join the fight against rail infrastructure vandalism across the country.
