Tiv people seek to end the killings in Taraba, Plateau, and Benue States, and disapprove of agitation for breaking up these states

0

Nigerian Tiv people in Taraba State are worried about the murders that are currently occurring across the country, as well as the various groups that are advocating for the country to be divided.

The group called on the authorities to take swift action to put an end to all kinds of violence, such as acts of destruction of property and the promotion of separatism.

Within a few hours of the celebration of the feast of St. Augustine by the Tiv catholic community in Jalingo Diocese, communiqués distributed to the media practitioners in the area reported that secessionist agitators have become apparent and necessitated leaders to respond before reaching a point of no return.

This ethnic group, in unequivocal terms, condemns all forms of killings, criminality, and marginalization of minorities in the country.

We say our country, Nigeria, is going through a very turbulent time. A metaphorical representation of this quote is: “Africa is gradually being turned into a killing field, and the death of only a small number of people no longer matters, and this is not worthy of being reported in the media.”

According to them, Jos, the Plateau State capital and Benue State, Nigeria’s second most populous state, have both witnessed recent murders, and this led them to assert that,

“The attacks on our churches, recent massacres and retaliatory attacks in Jos, Benue, and mass abductions of innocent and helpless school children in various regions of the country, in particular, are specially deplored.”

They were also concerned about the overall insecurity in the country, but they also expressed concern for the government of Taraba State because they believe the State has been afflicted by interminable violence since 2014.

While offering condolences to Central Zone families for the loss of livelihood, President-elect Tiv Catholic Community of Jalingo Diocese’s Denis Hembaor, President St. Augustine’s Tiv Catholic Community, and elected Member of Parliament Denis Hembaor expressed sadness because “since 2014, most families in the central zone of the state have lost their source of livelihood and have been denied access to their farmlands.”

According to the communique, anyone who attempts to return to their homes in certain places would be inviting death.

Many residents in the Southern parts of the state say that they were forced to reside in IDP camps without hope of returning to their ancestral land during a crisis that allegedly occurred between 2019 and 2020.

In a letter addressed to the State Government, they requested that it redouble its efforts in resolving the crisis and creating adequate security arrangements for the safe return of everyone displaced by the emergency, including those who have returned to their homes in Wukari, Ibi, Donga, Takum, Gassol, and Bali LGAs.

Centre, NGOs propose creation of  NYSC trust fund

0

…. canvass two years period

The Federal Government and National Assembly have been urged to create a trust fund for the National Youth Service Corps scheme to enhance job creation and reduce unemployelment.

This was part of the recommendations of the Centre for Social Justice, Equity and Transparency as well as Nigeria First after a one-day round table analysing the gains, challenges and prospects of the scheme for national unity.

In a communique co-signed by Richard Augustine Adie, Chairman,

Communique Drafting Committee, Stella Osso (secretary) and Usman Abubakar (member), over 250 members of the centre and NGO unilaterally agreed that a trust fund would lead to a seamless transition from corp members to business owners and employers of labour.

The group also recommended an extension to the service year from one to two to allow corp members utilize the various skills and entrepreneurship development initiatives introduced by the scheme.

According to the group, the NYSC has immensely contributed to the growth and development of the country, catering for a critical segment of the young population.

It also acknowledged that the scheme has evolved over the years to a hub for skills acquisition and entrepreneurship development which has transformed the lives of corp members in ways too numerous to mention.

The communique also hailed the NYSC leadership for being innovative and responsive, which has translated to an overall improvement in the affairs of the exercise.

The group, however, urged the FG to emulate the NYSC’s Skills and Entrepreneurship Development Initiative as a national template to empower Nigerians at the grassroots level in the quest for growth and development.

Read full communique below:

Introduction:

The Centre for Social Justice, Equity and Transparency, in collaboration with Nigeria First, convoked a one-day round table to discuss the National Youth Service Corps with regards to its contributions to the socio-economic development of Nigeria.

Members were drawn from both organizations and were divided into committees to examine the following: Gains of the NYSC, Challenges of the NYSC, and Prospects of the NYSC in uniting the country in modern-day Nigeria.

Members deliberated rigorously and were exhaustive in their approach given the sensitivity of the issues at hand regarding the relevance of the NYSC scheme in the socio-economic development of Nigeria.

The Deliberations:

The meeting had in attendance over 250 persons drawn from various civil society organizations and non-governmental organizations, which deliberated in committees and reported their findings at the plenary at the end of the roundtable.

The Gains of the NYSC:

Members were able to identify that the NYSC as a scheme is indeed beneficial and has contributed immensely to the growth and development of Nigeria in the sense that it strategically caters for a critical segment of the country-youths. The one-year service period serves as that bridging gap for youths in their transition into adulthood.

It was also identified that the NYSC has evolved over the years to a hub for skills acquisition and entrepreneurship development which has transformed the lives of corp members in ways too numerous to mention.

It was also identified that the NYSC, through its various interventions, has served the purpose of national stability and unity as corp members have used the NYSC opportunity to understand the religious and ethnic plurality in Nigeria. Corp members have also contributed vigorously in critical sectors in Nigeria, such as health, education and agriculture.

It identified the numerous contributions of the NYSC in the health sector to include the provision of medical services in government hospitals in rural and urban areas, the provision of ad-hoc services in critical assignments of national interests, such as during election periods, during immunizations, national examinations, and many more areas.

It was also identified that NYSC had contributed immensely to reducing unemployment in the country through its various youth empowerment initiatives that have transformed our youths into employers of labour. This has helped reduce unemployment in the country as most of the trained and equipped corps members have imbibed the spirit of entrepreneurship against the usual unending wait for white-collar jobs. The youths have also succeeded in employing their fellow youth in their established businesses. They also serve as sources of inspiration to others.

The Challenges:

The committee, after extensive deliberation, identified that the NYSC is indeed challenged in some areas which include, the issue of ensuring the safety of corps members throughout the service year, the funding of its various skills acquisition and entrepreneurship development initiatives.

There is also the challenge of corp members engaging in acts outside the scope of their service engagements. In some instances, the consequences are unpleasant, and the NYSC takes the blame for such errant behaviors.

Prospects for the Unity of Nigeria:

The committee deliberated on the NYSC and its prospects for the unity of Nigeria. There was a unanimous decision that the NYSC as a scheme is indeed relevant to the scheme of things in this critical point of our existence as a country.

By posting corpers to unfamiliar places to interact with people from different backgrounds, the NYSC brings together Nigerian youths from diverse socio-economic and ethno-religious backgrounds. This helps bridge the ethnic and religious divisions in the nation by providing exposure to other ethnic groups, which is a positive step towards building a stronger nation.

It was also agreed that the NYSC aids social integration by providing opportunities for cross-cultural interaction that has led to inter-tribal marriages, helping to reduce inter-ethnic stereotypes and suspicions. NYSC also fosters patriotism among Nigerian youths; participation is regarded as obeying the clarion call to serve the fatherland.

Conclusion:

At the end of the one-day round table, participants made presentations on their findings at the plenary. Participants were unanimous in agreement with regards to the strategic importance of the NYSC scheme in Nigeria. The gains identified outnumbered the challenges facing the scheme. Therefore it was agreed that the efforts of the leadership of the NYSC have been outstanding in the past few years.

The various innovations in the scheme were also noteworthy in critical areas such as health, education and agriculture, which resulted in the following recommendations:

Recommendation/Commendation:

The Centre for Social Justice, Equity and Transparency, in collaboration with Nigeria First, at the end of the one-day roundtable in the assessment of the NYSC scheme, as a result of this make the following recommendations:

That an amendment seeking an extension of service year from one to two years to allow corp members utilize the various skills and entrepreneurship development initiatives introduced in the scheme.

That there is an urgent need for the presidency as well as the national assembly to begin the process of establishing a Trust Fund for the NYSC and to be backed by law to serve as the hub for socio-economic development to finance business initiatives of corp members during their service year.

The establishment of the NYSC Trust Fund would catalyze job creation and the reduction of unemployment. It would afford a seamless transition from corp members to business owners and employers of labour. It would ease the pressure on the already overstretched public sector. It would open more opportunities in the private sector, and Nigeria would experience sustainable growth and development.

The government should emulate the NYSC Skills and Entrepreneurship Development Initiative as a national template to empower Nigerians at the grassroots level in the quest for growth and development.

The leadership of the NYSC has been innovative and responsive, which has translated to an overall improvement in the affairs of the NYSC.

That the supervisory Ministry of Youth and Sports Development has provided credible leadership towards achieving the overarching objectives of the NYSC.

Students from Zamfara and Niger are reunited with their families, bringing joy to the nation

Parents wept with joy as 90 children kidnapped from the Salihu Tanko Islamic School in Tegina, Niger State, were reunited with their parents on Friday after more than 80 days in captivity.

A couple whose son died in captivity said they would be in excruciating pain for a long time because they had yearned to see their child since the day he and his classmates were kidnapped by bandits.

When they realized they would never see their son again, they broke down in tears. On Friday, other parents and siblings were reunited with their released loved ones in Minna.

The children were kidnapped in late May and held captive for 88 days until they were released on Thursday after a ransom was paid.

The Tegina students were released just five days after the Bethel Baptists School students in Kaduna.

Idris Umar, the father of the child who died in the bandits’ den, described the ordeal as traumatic.

He described it as the darkest moment of his life because his long-held hope of reuniting with his son, as had the hopes of the other parents, had been dashed.

“It was a traumatic experience that I wouldn’t wish on anyone, not even my worst enemy. In Tegina, it was terrible for me and all of us as parents,” he said.

The deceased died 24 days after their kidnapping, according to one of the girls.

Similarly, Maryam, a 9-year-old girl whose parents died soon after her kidnapping, was in agony and grief yesterday. While the other students were being reunited with their parents, she sobbed uncontrollably and could not be consoled by sympathisers.

Some of the children who spoke with our correspondent told us about their captivity experiences.

Zuwaira Isah, a female student, said they trekked for four days in the bush before arriving at their final destination.

“On occasion, they would ride their bikes among us, carrying small children. It wasn’t an easy journey. They also used to wake us up in the middle of the night. They used to beat us when we first arrived at their den, but the gang leader told them to stop,” she said.

She claimed, however, that they were adequately fed three times a day with rice, pap, and other types of food, depending on what was available.

“They fed us three times per day. We were given pap in the morning and rice or any other available food for lunch and dinner. When we got sick, they gave us drugs and injections. One of them was given the title of doctor. He was the one who took care of the sick people among us,” she explained.

She claimed that the older members of the group were obligated to look after the younger members and act as their parents in order to make them feel at ease.

She also claimed that the kidnappers urged them to pray five times a day.

Governor Sani Bello receives the children of Tegina.

One of the girls stated that they had given up hope of ever seeing their parents again.

“We never expected to see our parents again, even though they didn’t beat us. “However, we are delighted to be back today,” she stated.

The parents of one of the students thanked God for their children’s safe return.

“We thank Allah (SWT) for allowing us to witness this lovely Friday. This is a unique Friday for us. We’ve been crying nonstop all day and night. Today, however, Allah has turned our cries into joy,” she said.

Another parent, Hauwa Hamza, who spoke in Hausa, said they would now be able to sleep peacefully, thanking Allah for allowing them to see their children again.

Some of the parents we spoke with said the incident would not prevent them from sending their children to school.

Alhaji Abubakar Alhassan, the school’s head teacher, expressed his gratitude to those who were involved in the struggle.

“Many people, including the government and individuals, have contributed to their release. Even though it is an Islamic school, Christians, churches, and pastors have contributed. They prayed that we would be able to secure their release,” he explained.

Speaking to our correspondent, Modibbo Ibrahim, the chairman of Rafi Local Government, who also claimed to be an uncle to the boy who died in captivity, said it had been a difficult experience for his people, but thanked Allah for the children’s safe release.

“We are now working together with traditional rulers to prevent this incident from happening again. However, because their informants are present, we cannot reveal other strategies to the media,” he said.

Governor Abubakar Sani Bello, who received the children, said that 90 of the 91 children kidnapped on May 30, 2021 were released, while one died in captivity.

“I want to congratulate each and every one of us who has contributed in any way to the release of these precious children. This exemplifies the illness or insanity that exists in some people’s minds. “I can’t explain or imagine why you would kidnap a three-year-old and hold him or her captive for more than 80 days,” he said.

He stated that all of the children were medically examined, with 86 of them being found to be in good health and four others having health issues.

College students from Zamfara have returned home.

Similarly, the abducted students of the College of Agriculture and Animal Science in Bakura, Zamfara State, have been released 12 days after being kidnapped from the institution.

“Today, based on our dialogue and reconciliation, we used the repentant bandits to secure the release of these students,” Governor Bello Matawalle said shortly after their release.

“They toiled for nearly ten days. They were out day and night trying to persuade those criminals to let the students and teachers go. Alhamdulillah, they have arrived in our midst today.”

The students were transported in a bus to the Government House in Gusau, which was heavily guarded. They were welcomed by the governor and other state officials.

Around 11 p.m. on August 15, gunmen stormed the institution and abducted 20 people: 15 students, four staff members, and a driver.

Two watchmen and a police officer were killed by the gunmen during the attack.

The abductors demanded N350 million for the students’ release a few days later.

Governor Matawalle said no ransom was paid for the students’ release when he met them on Friday.

Meanwhile, the governor has ordered that all of the state’s major markets be closed. He also ordered the closure of all filling stations in the area, as well as the prohibition of the sale of fuel, even in jerry cans.

Another 32 Bethel students have been released by the bandits.

Also, one week after 15 students from Bethel Baptist High School in Kaduna were released and reunited with their families, bandits have released another 32 students.

The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) in Kaduna State says 31 students are still being held captive and has urged Nigerians to pray for their safe release.

While confirming the release of the 32 students, Kaduna State CAN Chairman Rev. Joseph Joh Hayab said they were released on Friday evening and are being reunited with their families.

Hayab expressed gratitude to Nigerians for their support and asked for more prayers for the remaining students’ release.

15 of the students were released last week, with the bandits promising to release the rest in batches.

On July 5th, bandits broke into a school in Damishi, Chikun local government area of Kaduna State, and abducted about 121 students. At least 90 students have been released so far, with a ransom of over N50 million paid to the bandits.

EPL: Owen Hargreaves names two players who will leave Man United due to Ronaldo’s arrival

0

Following Cristiano Ronaldo’s return to Old Trafford, former Manchester United midfielder Owen Hargreaves has suggested that Edinson Cavani and Anthony Martial could leave the club this summer.

After the 36-year-old announced his departure from Juventus, Manchester United confirmed Ronaldo’s sensational return to Old Trafford on Friday.

After joining Turin from Real Madrid in 2018, Ronaldo scored 101 goals in 134 appearances.

Earlier in his career, he spent six years with Manchester United, where he established himself as one of the best players in the world and a Red Devil legend.

Hargreaves, while excited by the Portuguese’s return to Old Trafford, pointed out that his arrival could result in Cavani and Martial leaving the club.

Cavani has made an impression since joining Manchester City on a free transfer last summer, but he is currently wearing Ronaldo’s number seven shirt.

“They almost have too many players with Martial, Cavani, Rashford, Greenwood, so maybe someone will leave,” Hargreaves told Premier League productions.

“Could it be Cavani and Martial?” says the narrator. Someone could be seen leaving. Cristiano Ronaldo is Cristiano Ronaldo. Cavani has been fantastic for Manchester United, but Cristiano Ronaldo is Cristiano Ronaldo.

“I’m guessing Cavani will respect his desire for the number seven shirt. Perhaps Cavani will move to a club where he can play on a more regular basis. Martial would be a fantastic swap, and you’d think there’d be plenty of interest in him.

“That’s where he belongs,” says the narrator. He’s one of the best players I’ve ever seen; his talent is unrivaled, but his work ethic and dedication are even more impressive.

According to the Kaduna State Government, three people were killed and many others were injured in an attack in the state’s Zangon Kataf Local Government Area.
In a statement released on Friday in Kaduna, Mr Samuel Aruwan, Commissioner for Internal Security and Home Affairs, confirmed the attack.

“Security agencies have informed the Kaduna State Government that unidentified persons attacked Machun and Manuka villages in Zangon Kataf LGA, killing three residents and injuring several others.

“Police personnel responded to a distress call from Machun village and mobilized there, according to the report.

They were also alerted by gunshots from Manuka when they arrived.

He said, “As the assailants fled the area, the operatives discovered the bodies of three victims.”

He said an unspecified number of people had been hurt and were being treated in hospitals.

The report was received with sadness by Gov. Nasir El-Rufai, who prayed for the repose of the residents killed and sent condolences to their families, according to the Commissioner.

He also wished the injured people a speedy recovery and urged local security agencies to conduct thorough investigations into the incident.

0

Ejiofor Izuchukwu and Nzube Okafor, two suspected human traffickers, have been arrested in Nigeria for allegedly attempting to traffic ten girls to Dubai, United Arab Emirates.

Usman Belel, the Assistant Inspector-General of Police in charge of the Force Criminal Investigation and Intelligence Department, Alagbon, Ikoyi, Lagos State, confirmed this during a press briefing on Friday, saying the victims were rescued in the Republic of Benin, following an intelligence report received through the State Criminal Investigation and Intelligence Department from a non-governmental organization.

“On August 8, 2021, the bureau received an intelligence report from a non-governmental organization through the Nigeria Police Force State Criminal Investigation and Intelligence Department, Panti, Yaba, Lagos, that ten girls were about to be trafficked to Dubai, United Arab Emirates, through Cotonou and were lodged at NIS Hotel, near Scoa Gbeto, Cotonou, Republic of Benin, in preparation for their departure,” he said.

“Our counterpart at the National Centre Bureau in Abuja, INTETPOL, was able to notify our counterpart at the NCB in Cotonou, who swung into action and apprehended two suspects, rescued the ten girls, and repatriated them to Nigeria. “They (suspects) were able to obtain some of the victims’ passports from Nigeria, while others were obtained from the Republic of Benin with the help of some immigration officers who backdated the stamp on their passports to meet the two-week quarantine period despite their arrival in the Republic of Benin only a few days before their rescue. They were supposed to be airlifted to Dubai on August 19, 2021. Buhari’s treatment of AK-47-wielding bandits is far worse than declaring them terrorists –Garba Shehu

0

Garba Shehu, the presidential spokesman, claims that the Federal Government’s treatment of AK-47-wielding bandits is worse than labeling them terrorists.

On Saturday morning, he spoke with BBC News Pidgin in an interview.

Garba was responding to a question about why his boss, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retd. ), hasn’t declared blood-sucking bandits illegal, as the current government has done with the Indigenous People of Biafra and is preparing to do with the Yoruba Nation secessionist group.

“The Buhari administration’s treatment of the armed bandits is worse than declaring them terrorists. The President has issued a directive that any AK-47-wielding bandits should be shot on sight.

“Yes, IPOB has been declared illegal by the law of the land; however, there is no order to shoot on sight,” Shehu said.

“The Nigerian Air Force is busy bombing locations, and the military is on the ground, exchanging fire with them and killing them by the hundreds,” he says.
“One thing people who say that ignore is the successes that are being recorded in many areas in the fight against insurgency in the country,” the presidential aide added.
Garba claimed that dealing with bandits and terrorists has yielded “enormous successes.” “For example, Boko Haram is surrendering in their thousands today; this did not happen overnight,” he said.

Many of the bandits, he claims, are being circled and apprehended. “It is only a matter of time before they are significantly reduced and the Nigerian state is once again safe,” Shehu assured Nigerians.

The Attorney General of the Federation, Abubakar Malami (SAN), and the then Solicitor General of the Federation and Permanent Secretary of the Federal Ministry of Justice, Mr Dayo Apata, approached the Federal High Court in Abuja in September 2017 to seek judicial support for President Muhammadu Buhari’s Executive Order outlawing IPOB and its activities in all parts of Nigeria.

The order prohibiting IPOB was granted by Justice Abdu Kafarati, then Acting Chief Judge of the Federal High Court.
The Federal Government is also said to be considering banning the Yoruba Nation movement led by Prof Banji Akintoye and Sunday Adeyemo, also known as Sunday Igboho.

Northerners may be unable to vote in 2023 If banditry continue – public commentator

0

Alhaji Ahmed Bakare, a public commentator, has sent a warning to Zamfara State Governor, Hon. Bello Mohammed, saying that declaring a state of emergency in the north will not solve the region’s security problems.

The Governor has forgotten that the government pays the military and other security operatives in the north, according to the commentator, who laments that the Governor wants to eliminate their jobs in order to increase insecurity in the north.

Nobody, he claims, is above the government’s power unless the government refuses to act.

He quoted late Nigerian President General Sani Abacha, who said that if a crisis in a society lasts more than 24 hours, the government is involved.

Alhaji Bakare claimed that the military and other security operatives in the north can put an end to the banditry that is ravaging the region, but that they are not being given the opportunity to carry out their constitutional responsibility as life and property protectors.

He challenged Governor Bello Mohammed Matawalle to give the military and other security operatives the authority to carry out their constitutional duties and see if banditry activities in the state could not be ended in the shortest time possible.

“No one can escape reality, and we all know that many people are benefiting significantly from the state’s banditry activities,” he lamented.

“Why is it that these banditry activities only affect the common people? To discover the truths, we must delve deeply into the matter.”

“Even the government owes citizens an explanation as to why these banditry activities have continued to worsen day after day.

“There is no doubt that the north faces serious security issues, as our so-called leaders have alluded to the north’s security challenges.

“If the insecurity in the north continues, the region will have the lowest turnout in the 2023 general elections because people will be afraid of losing their lives during the elections.”

He urged Matawalle and others to keep their tongues in check so that a new crisis in the north would not arise.

Retired military officers and Gen. Irabor meet to discuss insecurity

0

The Armed Forces of Nigeria (AFN) is reviewing its operational engagements, according to the Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), Gen. Lucky Irabor.

Irabor made the revelation in Asaba, Delta State, at the 6th edition of his security parley with military veterans.

Top retired officers attended the meeting, dubbed “CDS Interactive Session with Retired Senior Military Officers in the South-South Geopolitical Zone.”

According to the CDS, the consultation, which began in the South-West, has had a positive impact and will continue.

Irabor stated that the Delta SAFE operations, in conjunction with other internal security arrangements, are achieving success in combating illegal oil bunkering, piracy, and other crimes.

Other engagements are taking place behind the scenes, according to the defence chief.

He continued, “There is a non-kinetic approach that is part of the engagement that is focused on holistic solutions to the challenges in the Niger Delta region.”

Support for Osinbajo’s presidency is drummed up in 2023

0

Progressive Consolidation Group (PCG), a pro-All Progressives Congress (APC) group, has drummed up support for Vice-President Yemi Osinbajo to run for president in 2023 as the general election approaches.

According to the group, Osinbajo is a good candidate for the presidency in 2023 for re-strategizing the priorities of the Muhammadu Buhari presidency, enhancing progressive reforms, and national unity.

Ahmed Mohammed, the PCG’s National Coordinator, revealed this while leading other members of the group from the country’s six geopolitical zones on a courtesy visit to Katsina State Governor Aminu Bello Masari at the Government House in Katsina on Friday.

He explained that the vice-president is the most qualified and acceptable candidate for sustaining and improving President Buhari’s positive gains, achievements, and legacies, as well as tackling the nation’s many developmental challenges.

“In light of the country’s current developmental challenges, it is only prudent for the party to select the most qualified and acceptable candidate to maintain and improve on President Muhammadu Buhari’s positive gains, achievements, and legacies,” he said.

“In light of this development, we at the PCG are confident that an Osinbajo presidency in 2023 will reduce tensions, promote unity and stability, and accelerate progress in all sectors of the economy.

“As a result, we have come before you to ask for your help, wise counsel, and advice in order to increase our chances of collective success.”

Governor Masari responded by saying that what the ruling APC needs right now is for members to ensure that the party wins the upcoming general election regardless of ethnic differences.

According to the governor, the APC administration has made significant progress in terms of security, pension and gratuity payments, and development projects in the country over the last six years.
