Residents of Makurdi are concerned as cult activities increase grow more intense

0

Residents of Makurdi, Benue State’s capital, have raised concern about cult-related killings.

Cultist activities in Makurdi’s suburbs, according to several people who spoke to our correspondent, have become a subject of concern.

A witness witnessed the murder of two people in Makurdi’s North Bank area a few days ago stated individuals who lived or traded in the area were terrified.

“Cultist activities have even impeded people from efficiently carrying out their enterprises at the SRS intersection market,” he said.

“People are reluctant to go to the market because of cultist threats at the junction, and those who do go are extremely vigilant to avoid becoming victims.”

Another witness, who said he was still recovering from the horror of watching people’s lives snuffed out recently, bemoaned the fact that cult activities were common in neighborhoods like Eri Street, SRS, Yogbo, Asase, and Mission Ward.

Similarly, a woman who lives near Makurdi’s Modern Market said locals would run home before dusk every day for fear of being trapped in a web of rival cult conflicts.

“The situation is bad,” she remarked. I’m not allowed to leave my house after 6 p.m. The ‘guys’ are robbing, maiming, and killing people everywhere.”

When contacted, DSP Catherine Anene, the state’s police spokesman, asked citizens not to be fearful and instead to furnish the authorities with important information about suspicious individuals.

Police raided flash locations in North Bank two days ago, according to DSP Anene, who stressed that the operation was still underway to provide a tranquil atmosphere for residents.

The overall number of infections in the country now stands at 203,514.

The second round of COVID-19 mass vaccinations began in August and is still going on across the country.

Emefiele woos foreign investors, insisting that opportunities abound in Nigeria

Mr. Godwin Emefiele, Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), has urged Nigerians in the diaspora and other overseas investors to take advantage of the country’s potential.
Despite the country’s economic challenges, Emefiele stated that there are multiple investment prospects with significant returns.

The Conference of Nigerian Political Parties (CNPP) has rejected the Peoples Democratic Party’s (PDP) call for Emefiele’s resignation.

However, addressing at the US-Nigeria Investment Summit in New York on the fringes of the present United Nations General Assembly, Emefiele encouraged Nigerians living abroad to start thinking about investing in their homeland.

“What am I doing here?” I’ve come to persuade those of you in the United States that it’s past time for us to start looking back. The possibilities are plentiful. I know what you’re thinking: “How do I get credit?” You may discover that getting credit is difficult at times, but you can always come in and start from scratch because there are so many options.

“What matters is that Nigeria is opening up, and I can tell you that people all over the world are starting to think about what they can do for Nigeria rather than what they can do for themselves. Before we can expect others to help us, we Nigerians must set an example by rolling up our sleeves and doing things for ourselves. During his 36-minute lecture, the CBN informed his audience, “That is the word I have come up with today, that we are determined to do it for ourselves.”
Emefiele noted that the country’s economic managers recently went to the Presidency and encouraged the government to take certain aggressive steps in order to stimulate economic growth in the country.

He mentioned the Nigeria Commodity Exchange’s current repositioning, the newly founded Infrastructure Corporation of Nigeria (InfraCo), and the planned Nigerian International Financial Centre as some of the projects (NIFC).

“We discovered that the primary challenge we face in the agriculture sector is the transfer of goods from farm to market,” he explained. It’s a transportation and logistical issue. We received presidential authority to reposition the Nigeria Commodity Exchange, which is critical in the transfer of goods from farm to market. The formation of the Infraco is another significant step. You are all aware that Nigeria’s infrastructure has been a concern.

“We’re aiming to build a world-class infrastructure to see how we can improve Nigeria’s infrastructure without burdening the federal government,” he said. So, where do you (Nigerians in the Diaspora) stand right now? He said, “We’d like you to come join us and work with us.”
He reaffirmed the central bank’s decision not to allow cryptocurrency transactions in Nigeria’s financial system, while also expressing enthusiasm for the e-Naira, the central bank’s digital currency, which would be introduced in a few days.

According to Emefiele, the originally planned introduction of the e-Naira on the same date would likely be moved to October 4, 2021 due to celebrations around Nigeria’s Independence Day on October 1.
“The central bank would not want the event to detract from the celebration of the country’s independence,” he said.

“We will be the first African country to create a digital money. It is an innovative proposal because we believe it will promote trade. With Nigeria as Africa’s largest country, this will set the tone for Africa to know that we are ready to lead and that we will actually lead in trade. “We are already working on certain coordination with all central bankers in ECOWAS to make trade, payment, and banking systems interact in such a way to set an example on the AfCFTA,” he added.

All of the aforementioned activities, according to the central bank governor, will certainly encourage economic growth, which will likely outpace population growth, enhance wealth, and increase production growth.
Emefiele had previously analyzed the Nigerian economy’s performance between 2015 and 2019, citing the catastrophic impact of the COVID-19 on the economy and listing numerous fiscal and monetary measures taken to support families and businesses.

“Of course, we took a number of offsetting actions because we believed the government, particularly the fiscal and monetary authorities, bore a significant share of blame.
“We witnessed fiscal fragility because the fiscal space was very limited; the deficit was narrow, and the fiscal space to release money to catalyze the economy was quite limited. As a result, the monetary policy decided it was necessary for us to see what we could do,” he explained.

He maintained that the base year effect was responsible for the 5.01 percent GDP increase in the second quarter of 2021, noting that the base year effect would have gone by the time the third and fourth quarter GDP data were released.

He did, however, forecast a 2.86 percent growth rate in 2021.
“We believe that some of the things we’ve done are yielding benefits, so we’re going to go all out,” Emefiele added.

Meanwhile, the CNPP has rejected the PDP’s proposal for Emefiele to resign.
In a statement issued in Abuja, the CNPP Secretary General, Chief Willie Ezeugwu, said the CBN Governor had done nothing to deserve the call for his resignation, adding that the PDP does not have the support of other opposition political parties in this call.

The PDP’s assertion was puzzling because the National Secretary of the APC National Caretaker Committee did not mention Emefiele in Senator John Udoedehe’s interview.

According to Ezeugwu, the fact that the PDP’s top and leading members have been resigning in large numbers “due to the unattractive nature of the party on the watch of the current National Working Committee of the Party rather than chasing shadows when its house is consumed by an inferno” should be of greater concern to the party.

“The Nigerian opposition parties are currently supposed to be undergoing internal healing and rebuilding in order to be well positioned to take power in 2023, but the activities of the Uche Secondus-led PDP have reduced opposition politics to child’s play and possibly being for hire to operators of BDCs who are fighting the Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria over the policy to stop selling forex to BDCs.

“If the likes of Uche Secondus and Mr. Kola Ologbodion are left in the critical positions they currently hold in the party, the PDP will quickly devolve into a briefcase political party.

“They should be given the way out rather than joining hirelings in making misdirected calls based on ludicrous, false, and unsubstantiated claims,” it continued.

We do not have mandate to fill the offices of zone president and vice president – PDP Zoning Committee

0

The meeting of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Zoning Committee for National Offices ahead of the October 30-31 National Convention closed on Thursday in Enugu, with members of the committee adjourning until next week to finish their work.

The Chairman of the Committee and Governor of Enugu State, Rt. Hon. Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi, addressed reporters following the closed-door meeting at Government House in Enugu, saying, “We had a fruitful discussion and we adjourned to conclude next week.”

Gov. Ugwuanyi stressed earlier in his welcome statement that the committee does not have the authority to zone political posts such as President or Vice President of Nigeria.

“Our Committee is strictly limited to the PDP National Executive Offices to be contested at the 2021 PDP National Convention scheduled for the end of October, 2021,” the governor explained, adding that “we have no mandate to zone political offices such as President or Vice President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.”

Gov. Ugwuanyi stated that the PDP is the most credible platform for delivering decent and accountable governance in Nigeria, and that the committee’s efforts will assist the party “reach the lofty principles and aims of our founding fathers.”

As a result, he urged committee members to be candid, open, and constructive in their suggestions and debates, as well as to be consistent with the scope of their mission.

“The membership and leadership of this committee have been carefully chosen because it is made up of very experienced, competent, and eminent Nigerians who are eager to reposition the PDP to play a role that is more than just that of the country’s main opposition political party, but also to build a party that offers alternative policy proposals and hope to Nigerians that there is still hope at the end of the tunnel.

Bill to Ban Fake and Contraband Pesticides scheduled for second reading

0

The House of Representatives cleared a bill for a second reading Tuesday in plenary that seeks to establish the Nigerian Pesticide Council to combat bogus and illicit pesticides that have made their way into Nigerian markets.

Hon. Danduste Muntari, Chairman of the House Committee on Agricultural Production and Services, is sponsoring a bill titled “A Bill for an Act to Provide for the Establishment of the Nigeria Pesticide Council, and for Related Matters.”

Muntari, who led the debate on the bill’s broad principles, said it’s critical to have a controlled framework to checkmate the agrochemical industry.

Because of the absence of the Pesticide Bill, he claims, “there is rampant adulteration and counterfeiting of these plant protection chemicals, causing catastrophic damage to the crop, soil, and economy of millions of farmers in Nigeria, among others.”

According to him, the bill aims to impose stricter regulations on the procurement, usage, and use of products, as well as serve as a catalyst for the country’s food security.

When passed, the bill will empower and enable the Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development to have a data bank of licensed pesticides, current manufacturers and importers, as well as a compendium of agro-dealers handling the products across the country, according to the member.

“The significance of the Pesticide Bill in a developing country like Nigeria, which is Africa’s giant and whose biggest comparative advantage is agriculture, cannot be overstated,” he said.

Pests and diseases wreak havoc on crop yields and quality, necessitating the use of high-quality, environmentally friendly treatments to prevent losses of 50 to 100 percent. Product quality and efficacy will also be addressed in the Pesticide Bill.”

Three women arrested by Katsina police for concealing petrol in their bags for bandits

A group of police officers patrolling the Katsina-Jibia route arrested a mother, her daughter, and another lady for concealing petrol in their bags to give to forest robbers.

On Thursday, the three suspects were paraded at the state police headquarters by the spokesman for the Katsina Police Command, SP. Isah Gambo.

The suspects are all alleged to be residents of the Malali Quarters in Katsina city, and confessed to having committed the crime in violation of the executive order and other existing laws of the federation.

“These women were apprehended along the Jibia-Katsina road with these luggage, posing as ordinary travelers on their way to Magama in Jibia, a border town with Niger Republic.

“What they do is smuggle petrol to criminals in Jibia woodland, however nemesis caught up with them and they were detained with these exhibits,” says the source.

“These displays you’re seeing aren’t just travel bags; they’re filled with gasoline and designed to be delivered to the robbers in the forest.

“The accused are Umma Bello, 45, of Malali Quarters in Katsina metropolis, Nusaiba Muhammad, 16, and Dija Umar, 50, all of Malali Quarters.

“What they do is engage the services of ‘okada,’ motorcycle riders to buy fuel for them in their motorcycle tanks from filling stations and then transport it back to Malali quarters for them where they siphon the fuel from the motorcycle tanks and then arrange it into bags like these to avoid the eagle eyes of security agencies while transporting it to the forest to sell to bandits,” said SP Isah Gam.

The management of the National Youth Sevice Corps (NYSC) has denied reports that it advised corps members travelling on “high-risk roads” to alert their families, friends and colleagues to have somebody to pay off the ransom that could be demanded in the event of being kidnapped.

The NYSC in a statement today said the release is fake and the handwork of mischief-makers.

The statement said ‘Our attention has been drawn to a fake release making the rounds on the social media to the effect that Corps Members travelling on “high-risk roads” should alert their families, friends and colleagues to have somebody to pay off the ransom that could be demanded in the event of being kidnapped.

“Management wishes to emphatically state that the clause quoted is not embedded in NYSC Security Tips pamphlet which was put together by a highly respected retired security expert.

“Management wishes to appeal to the general public to always clarify issues with the Scheme.

“Please, be wary of falling prey to the antics of mischief-makers out to ridicule the Scheme.

“Management shall continue to prioritise the security and welfare of Corps Members and staff at all times”.

A passenger bus plunged into the Niger River in the Koton Karfe area of Kogi, killing four people and leaving two others missing.

In a statement issued yesterday in Lokoja, the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) confirmed this.

According to the report, a Toyota Hiace bus carrying 15 passengers crashed into the river late Tuesday night.

The bus took off from Ijora Seven Up Under-Bridge in Lagos, according to Solomon Agure, the state Sector Commander of the FRSC, who confirmed this.

According to Agure, four people died in the accident, including a woman, and seven others were critically injured.

He claimed that two passengers were unharmed.

Oyo spends N70 million on Covid-19 treatment and isolation centers on monthly basis

The cost also included maintenance of the isolation centers, feeding, and payment of hazard allowance, according to Dr Mufutau Ayoola, Permanent Secretary, Oyo State Ministry of Health. He made the disclosure at the opening of the Pharmaceutical Society of Nigeria, Oyo State chapter’s 2021 Pharmacy Week.

Dr. Ayoola stated that some doctors who contracted covid 19 while working at the state’s isolation centers were receiving treatment. He claimed that doctors contracting covid-19 as a result of working in isolation centers was a risk.

Mr Adegboyega Oguntoye, Chairman, PSN Oyo State, stated that pharmacists, in collaboration with other members of the health team, are frontline care providers in responding to public health epidemics and pandemics.

“We don’t just advise patients on how to use their medicines anymore,” Mr Oguntoye continued, “pharmacy practice in Nigeria now takes a holistic approach to patient care.” Our abilities and knowledge have significantly increased.

“It is not surprising that the International Pharmaceutical Federation advocated for and the World Health Organization approved pharmacists as frontline care providers in public health services, from patient counseling to ethical referral processes, health promotion, vaccination and immunization services.”

Mrs Folasade Lawal, the keynote speaker, suggested that Nigeria should take advantage of the country’s large number of community pharmacists to combat vaccine apprehension and achieve the goal of immunizing all Nigerians against COVID-19.

She stated that pharmacy-based immunisation, as it is currently practiced around the world, allows pharmacists to actively participate in immunisation. “There are over 4,400 registered community pharmacists in Nigeria,” she stated. The story will change for us if they are empowered. As a result, it must be thoroughly investigated.”

Mrs Lawal stated that patients prefer going to community pharmacists because they are trusted, and as primary care providers, they are in the best position to provide disease prevention and health promotion to both the healthy and the sick.

The pharmacist, on the other hand, warned of a looming epidemic of drug abuse and antimicrobial resistance fueled, among other things, by the COVID-19 pandemic.

She advocated for the necessary environment and policy support for pharmacists to provide immunization services, ensuring COVID-19 vaccines can reach more people at the grassroots as well as vulnerable groups who are afraid of contracting the infection if they visit public health facilities.

Insecurity: Foreigners will not be allowed to take over Nigeria –Military

Maj.-Gen. Christopher Musa, the Theatre Commander for Operation Hadin Kai, says the Nigerian military will not allow the Islamic States West African Province, a foreign terrorist group, to establish a strong foothold in Nigeria.

This was stated by Musa in a news conference on Wednesday in Maiduguri.

He claimed that the ISWAP terrorist group was a foreign terrorist organization with some local collaborations, and that the terrorists who refused to surrender were members of ISWAP.

ISWAP, he claims, is a foreign terrorist organization that is funded by foreign individuals and possibly some locals, but mostly by foreigners, and that has foreign leadership, implying that they have no ties to Nigeria.

“It is clear that ISWAP is a group of foreigners attempting to infiltrate our country, which we will never allow.

“That is why I want to encourage those of them who are with them, particularly those who are members of their group, to pull out and understand that they have no stake in what those guys are doing.

“They don’t wish the country well, and they don’t wish themselves well, and we will never allow any foreigner to set foot on Nigerian soil,” he stated.

According to the theater commander, the military has advised governments on the importance of implementing a system that involves victims in discussions about how to deal with surrendered terrorists.

He went on to say that the government must ensure that the victims are not forgotten, and that the public should have confidence that the proper procedures will be followed without fail.

Some of the victims, he claims, are military men, as the military has lost outstanding officers and soldiers.
“It’s been difficult for us to even accept them, but it’s what we’re supposed to do professionally.

“Once we have those windows and they are functional, we are supposed to make sure that we arrest them and bring them in, and then the nation will pursue its proper cause through the constitution, which is exactly what will happen.

“We want them to understand that Operation Hadin Kai is only doing its part, and that the military operation is only about 20% of the operation, while the remaining 80% is about diplomacy, humanitarian aid, justice, the rule of law, and all of these things.

“So, that’s where we’re at right now,” he explained.

Musa revealed that the terrorists were being held separately and that they would not be released immediately.

He claimed that the Defence Intelligence Agency, the DSS, and other security agencies were profiling the surrendered terrorists.

According to him, everyone who has anything to do with it is checking, and we’ve also invited the National Identity Management Agency, which is collecting everyone’s profiles.

“They take the thumb and photographs, so we know what they are doing, where they are, and where he goes even after this.

“This just goes to show you that we’re following protocol and no one’s safety is in jeopardy,” he said.
