Road accidents in Abuja claimed the lives of 159 people and injured 1592 others

0

According to the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), 149 people died and 1572 were injured in 859 road accidents in Abuja between January and November this year.

At the 2021 Special Marshal Sectorial Workshop in Abuja, Oga Ochi, the Sector Commander of the Federal Road Safety Corps in the Federal Capital Territory, revealed this.

According to him, many of the accidents were caused by road users’ disobedience of traffic rules and a lack of patience.
Overspeeding was found to be the cause of 75% of road accidents, according to him.

He stated that unless the trend is reversed, it will have a significant impact on economic growth.

“If this trend is not addressed and reversed quickly, it could become a major impediment to FCT’s economic growth,” he said.

In just seven days, the Ministry of Works and Housing portal received 7,315 applications – Fashola

0

As Nigerians respond positively to the Ministry of Works and Housing portal, which opened last Tuesday for a chance to subscribe to over 5,000 houses under the Federal Government’s National Housing Programme, Mr. Babatunde Fashola, SAN, the Minister of Works and Housing, has announced that the Ministry has received a total of 7,315 applications for allocation.
Fashola, who recently testified before the Senate Committee on Lands, Housing, and Urban Development in support of his ministry’s 2022 budget, also provided the Committee with documents detailing the number of applications submitted, completed, and pending processing, as well as a breakdown of the number by state.

The Committee expressed satisfaction with the development in the Housing Sector at the conclusion of the defense, which took the form of a robust interaction, with many, including the Chairman, Senator Sam Egwu, noting with delight that with the portal now open, the Ministry has truly launched out.

The Minister, who said the prices ranged from N7.2 million to N16.5 million for the different categories of houses, explained the criteria for pricing the different categories of houses, pointing out that one of the factors that made the difference in price between the Programme’s houses and those being built by private developers was size.

He informed members of the Committee that the program’s house categories included 1, 2, and 3 bedroom semi-detached bungalows, as well as condominiums (blocks of flats), and that there are price differences among the categories of houses based on size and space, with all bungalows, for example, having adjoining land, making them more expensive than flats.

“When compared to what is available in the private sector in terms of size, the one bedroom with 77sqm of living space, the two bedroom with 90sqm, and the three bedroom with 137sqms are by far larger than houses built by private developers and justify the prices placed on them,” Fashola continued.

The Minister also stated that a one bedroom flat in a condominium is 60 square meters, a two bedroom flat is 76 square meters, and a three bedroom flat is 110 square meters, all of which are larger than what is available in the conventional market, adding, “You cannot get them at such a price in the market.”

“Our thinking is informed by what we have experienced in parts of our lives and what we think is best practice,” the Minister said, urging lawmakers and other interested Nigerians to engage with the portal for answers to all relevant questions, including the quality, size, and appearance of the house in any location across the country. We believe we are in the digital age, and we should start doing things that are in line with it, rather than printing and selling forms.”

In response to a question about possible system manipulation, he stated, “We should not be creating unnecessary bureaucracies that will result in unnecessary human interactions and possibly some of the manipulations you refer to,” adding, “that does not mean that any system cannot be manipulated, but we believe that this is consistent with the goal of government.”

“We now live in a country where we can buy plane tickets using our mobile phones.” Our handheld devices are used to book hotels. “I don’t see why we can’t buy and sell houses with our handheld devices,” the Minister said, adding, “I did it as Governor of Lagos, and I thought we should try it at the national level.” He stated, “We believe that is where we should be going.”

Noting that the portal had only been open for a week, Fashola urged, “Let us give it time to evolve, and I think that 7,315 applications from Nigerians in this time is a very enthusiastic response,” adding that everyone who applied had paid N10,000 through the Remita platform.

“Contrary to popular belief, because conditions are difficult, that form that you would have sold in printed form is being sold digitally, and government is collecting the money for administrative purposes,” the Minister said, adding that while it is open to all Nigerians, some of the conditions that address facelessness include having a passport photograph and a tax clearance certificate, as well as other forms of identification such as a national ID, driver’s license, or Inland Revenue Certificate.

“Affordability is not just a function of the cost but also the mode of payment,” he said, adding that in order to address that issue, the Ministry created mortgage and Rent-to-Own options so that payments could be spread out over time.

Fashola, when asked if the Ministry was duplicating the work of its agencies, the Federal Housing Authority (FHA) and the Federal Mortgage Bank of Nigeria (FMBN), said that the Ministry was only conducting a pilot project from which the agencies would continue to roll out in the future.

Senator Sam Egwu, the Chairman of the Committee and former Governor of Ebonyi State, said in his closing remarks that the Minister had answered all of the questions to the best of his ability and thanked him for his diligence and commitment to housing delivery.

“I think you’ll agree with me that the Minister has done a good job of answering the questions we’ve asked him. We’re also impressed that the information you provided indicated that you’d already begun. You’ve made a strong start. As a result, we’ll continue to communicate with you… As I previously stated, we are pleased, and my members are pleased, which is why the Chairman of the House Committee is also present…”, said the Chairman of the Committee.

Mr. Babangida Hussaini, the Permanent Secretary, and Directors in the Ministry’s Housing Sector, Special Advisers, and other relevant Ministry officials were also present at the meeting.

Following the Super Eagles’ poor performance, former presidents of the Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN) have called on the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) to fire Gernot Rohr, the team’s technical adviser, immediately.

The ex-presidents praised the NFF for providing the enabling environment for the team to thrive in a statement signed by Steve Alabi, Fan Ndubuoke, Sani Zaria, Olu Amadasun, and Saidu Abubakar, but regretted that the Franco-German coach’s technical ineptitude has remained the Super Eagles’ bane.

The presidents bemoaned the fact that Nigerians now watch the Super Eagles with their hearts in their mouths because the team no longer has a consistent playing style.

“There is no base, speed, or pattern on the team.” This is why, whenever our beloved Super Eagles, led by Rohr, play, Nigerians’ hearts are in their mouths.

“We can’t sit back and watch a coach who doesn’t have the technical ability to manage his own country’s national team lead us into a ditch.”

“The team’s current path does not appear to have a light at the end of the tunnel.” As a result, we urge the NFF to fire Rohr as soon as possible and replace him with a world-class coach for the Super Eagles,” the statement reads in part.

Customs inspections of vehicles should be free of extortion

Nigerians have been complaining about the Nigeria Customs Service’s increased inspection of vehicles traveling the highways, claiming that the exercise is being used as an avenue for extortion by some customs officers.

We understand that the customs service is required by law to conduct vehicle inspections anywhere in the country, including at ports of entry and beyond. However, we are concerned about reports of extortion by servicemen, as well as the untold inconvenience and hardship that motorists face on the highways.

Vehicle inspection on highways by customs had long been a routine practice to combat the threat of vehicle smuggling in the country, but it was suspended when the federal government closed the land borders and the COVID-19 pandemic was at its peak. With the reopening of land borders and the easing of the pandemic, inspections to check the papers of vehicles traveling the highways have been reinstated. In a recent report, a cross-section of motorists said they were frequently intimidated and harassed by customs officers who hide behind the guise of checking smuggling and vehicle duty to commit illegalities.

Nigerians interviewed for the report described paying as much as N150,000 to customs officers patrolling the highways without receiving a receipt or proof of payment after being accused of possessing forged documents. According to the report, a number of locations have become notorious for such operations, including the always-bustling Naval Base area of the Abuja-Lokoja highway in Kogi State, the Ibilor area in Edo State, and the Okene-Edo-Ekiti route, which connects the north and south. Another black spot identified by motorists is the Jos-Abuja highway, particularly around the Riyom-Kuru and Forest axes.

We note that customs has made significant improvements in the documentation process for new vehicles, as well as simplified payment procedures. While we applaud these efforts, we must also acknowledge that there is still much work to be done. The illegal importation of vehicles into the country, which still occurs, cannot take place without customs officials’ knowledge and possibly connivance.

Extortion is a problem that motorists complain about, and it tarnishes the image of the customs. Many people have left with the impression that the exercise is more about extorting money from motorists than it is about customs doing the job that the laws and Nigerians expect them to do. The customs authorities must correct this as soon as possible. The majority of motorists lament the fact that the fake documents they are accused of possessing were actually issued by customs officials. As a result, the customs service will need to tighten its operations to ensure that all documents issued are genuine. It should also implement a deep cleaning of procedures and reorientation of its men. It needs to improve its land border manning system to prevent not only the illegal importation of vehicles but also the illegal importation of all other contraband items.

Furthermore, when dealing with Nigerian citizens, the Nigeria Customs Service, like all other military and paramilitary institutions in the country, retains the authoritarian mentality and unfriendly attitudes of our military past. This must be discarded. The NCS is a revenue-generating entity as well as a law enforcement agency. Nigerians are the source of those funds.

As a result, a cultural reorientation exercise is required to make customs officers more professional in their duties and to discourage acts that deviate from the service’s core mandate. They should also be expected to be courteous while remaining firm in their operations on the highways, keeping in mind that the NCS is primarily a service-oriented government agency. If it’s worth repeating, this is why it’s called the Nigeria Customs Service.

Furthermore, the service should educate Nigerians on how to spot forged vehicle documents. Fake vehicle documents will be less common as a result of this. Nigerians who use customs services in various ways, on the other hand, must do their part to ensure that the process is smooth and free of fraud. Citizens must always cooperate fully with the service’s officials and do so in a respectful manner. Those who have been wronged should not be afraid to file a complaint with the appropriate authorities. Everything possible should be done to ensure that customs operatives provide effective service.

They claimed that, despite the propaganda, most of them were unable to vote in their villages in the 2019 elections due to an invasion by Fulani militia under the watchful eye of the APC-led administration, and that some of them had benefited greatly from the Governor before abandoning him for no apparent reason.

Even as they pledged unwavering support to the PDP, they expressed gratitude to Governor Ortom and his wife, Dr Eunice Ortom, as well as the entire PDP for welcoming them back into the fold.

While receiving the decampees, Governor Samuel Ortom and his wife, Dr. Eunice Ortom, assured them of equal opportunities, pointing out that members of the PDP have equal opportunities.

The Governor stated that Nigerians will not tolerate the APC’s failed leadership and will take over to provide the country with direction.

Governor Ortom owes the PDP family prayers and unwavering support, according to PDP State Chairman Sir John Ngbede, who hinted that the party will soon welcome thousands of supporters in the Benue South Senatorial District.
