Banditry: Bello meets with security agencies and monarchs in the search for a new strategy

0

Governor Abubakar Sani Bello of Niger State has met with heads of security agencies, traditional and religious leaders, and local government chairmen to find a solution to the state’s banditry attacks.

The governor told the media after the meeting at the government house in Minna that the purpose of the meeting was to review strategies and take necessary steps to address insecurity in the state.

“By the grace of God, and with the current efforts, we will be able to overcome most of these challenges very soon,” he said.

Bello, who expressed concern about the state’s constant banditry and other forms of crime, said the government was well aware of the people’s difficulties.

He praised the security agencies for their efforts to ensure the safety of rural communities.

PDP Guber Candidate, Ozigbo, to be Delivered by Ikpeazu, Okowa, and Makinde

0

Mr. Okezie Ikpeazu, Mr. Ifeanyi Okowa, and Mr. Seyi Makinde, Governors of Abia, Delta, and Oyo States, respectively, joined the Peoples’ Democratic Party (PDP) Governorship Candidate for Anambra State in a grand rally yesterday ahead of Saturday’s governorship election.

Ikpeazu, who is also the Chairman of Valentine Ozigbo’s National Campaign Council, led a group of governors in urging Anambra voters to vote for Ozigbo, pledging to work with him to ensure his victory.

He described the people of Anambra as among the best in the country, but chastised them for being members of an alternative political party, claiming that the best of Nigerians could not be found in their own backyard.

Similarly, Governor Okowa stated that the PDP’s recently held national convention, which resulted in the election of new party leaders, sent a clear message that the party is ready to reclaim Nigeria.

He urged the people to be brave and reclaim what was rightfully theirs.

Similarly, Governor Seyi Makinde stated that Saturday’s election is an opportunity for Anambra residents to unite in order to elect their governor.

They promised to support the PDP’s candidate in order to ensure the liberation of Anambra State’s people.

Mr. Philip Shaibu, the Deputy Governor of Edo State; Mr. Peter Obi, the former Governor of Anambra State; Senator Ndi Obi, Senator Uche Ekwunife, Professor and ABC Nwosu, all of whom attended the event, praised Ozigbo and described him as a very humble personality.

“We urge the voters to take back their state because it has collapsed,” Obi said in his speech. For the past eight years, the state has remained where I left it in terms of roads and other amenities, and infrastructure has deteriorated significantly, while the state owes more than N120 billion in debt.

“The Monday television debate in which Ozigbo and two others took part clearly demonstrated that Ozigbo is ahead of the pack and should be given a chance to improve the state.”

If elected, Ozigbo promised to carry out his platform, saying that the rate at which supporters of other political parties defected to the PDP was a sign of things to come.

“Everyone in the state is enraged, and they want something different.” If I am elected governor, I will breathe new life into Anambra,” he stated.

Sterling Bank is accused by the Kogi Commissioner of opening a N20 billion bailout account without his knowledge.

0

Asiwaju Idris Asiru, the Kogi State Commissioner for Finance, Budget, and Economic Planning, has accused Sterling Bank of opening a fixed deposit account in the name of the state without his or the state government’s knowledge.
Asiru, who appeared before members of the Kogi State House of Assembly alongside the state’s Accountant General, Jibril Momoh, and Auditor General, Yakubu Okala, to explain the alleged N20 billion recently said to have been forfeited to the Central Bank of Nigeria, said the government was perplexed when it learned that the bailout money meant to upset workers’ salaries was kept in a fixed deposit account to earn interest.
Asiru told the house that the government sent a letter to Sterling Bank, which replied that the government does not have a fixed deposit account.
Members of the legislature took turns grilling the commissioner, asking if the Kogi State Government would sue Sterling Bank for damages and if the money returned to the CBN belonged to the state.
In response to the questions, the Commissioner stated that the outcome of the investigation would determine whether or not they would continue to work with Sterling Bank.
On the aforementioned mirror account, Asiru said the state government wrote to Sterling Bank about the money that would be returned to the CBN as reported, but the bank changed its mind, claiming the account was a liability account.
He claimed that the Kogi government was paying N89 million to settle the bailout debt on a monthly basis and that no fixed account had ever been established.
“No fixed account was ever opened or authorized by anyone, and no N20 billion was ever held anywhere.” The money collected from the bank via CBN 2019 approval has since been used for what it was intended for: salary payments and other overheads. As a state, we are known for our financial transparency, accountability, and efficiency, which has become a culture under Governor Yahaya Bello that cannot be easily tarnished. “Kogi State is in the good books of the World Bank and other international partners for openness, transparency, and accountability, so no amount of misinformation and mischievous assault can fault the records,” said Governor Bello.

This was despite the fact that the state’s Accountant General, Momoh Jibril, and the state’s Auditor General both stated that the bailout fund was used wisely for the purpose intended.
Sterling Bank’s Branch Manager and his team were absent from the meeting, but they are expected to return at the next legislative session.
The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has dropped its lawsuit seeking the forfeiture of N20 billion in bailout funds given to the Kogi State government.
Following an ex parte application filed by the EFCC, Tijani Ringim, a Lagos high court judge, frozen the Kogi State account held by Sterling Bank Plc on August 31, 2021.
The money, which was supposed to be used to pay state salaries, was allegedly kept in an interest-bearing account called the ‘Kogi State Salary Bailout Account,’ according to the Commission.
At the resumption of proceedings on Friday, EFCC counsel Kemi Pinheiro filed an application dated October 13 seeking the case to be dismissed.
The return of N19.3 billion to the Central Bank of Nigeria was one of the grounds for the application (CBN).

In ten years, Nigeria will need $1.5 trillion to close its infrastructure deficit: Buhari

0

President Muhammadu Buhari has stated that Nigeria will require $1.5 trillion in infrastructure investment over the next ten years.

The President made the announcement on Tuesday at a high-level side event on improving global infrastructure hosted by US Vice President Joe Biden, EU Commission President Van der Leyen, and UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson at the COP 26 in Glasgow.

International investors have been assured by President Buhari that Nigeria is ready for their investments in infrastructure development.

What you should know

‘‘My administration has established a clear legal and regulatory framework for private financing of infrastructure to establish a standard process, especially on the monitoring and evaluation process.

‘‘We look forward to working with you in this regard,’’ Buhari said.

He revealed that his administration is committed to infrastructure expansion in Nigeria, adding that new investments in critical sectors of the economy would aid in lifting 100 million Nigerians out of poverty by 2030.

‘‘There is a nexus between infrastructure development and the overall economic development of a nation.

‘‘My administration identified this early enough as a major enabler of sustainable economic development and the realization of other continental and global development aspirations particularly the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development Goals.

‘‘On my assumption of office in 2015, Nigeria faced a huge infrastructure deficit and the total National Infrastructure Stock was estimated at 35% of our Gross Domestic Product.

‘‘In solving these problems, we embarked on a massive infrastructure expansion programme in the areas of Health care, Education, Transportation, Manufacturing, Energy, Housing, Agriculture, and Water Resources,” he stated further.

President Buhari explained that his administration has provided more financial resources for these policies, charted new international partnerships and pursued liberalization policies to allow private sector participation. He further said that his government had introduced the revised National Integrated Infrastructure Master Plan – a policy document that ensures that Nigeria’s infrastructure expansion projects are cross-sectorally integrated and environmentally friendly.

“Build Back Better World” plan, an initiative of the G7 countries, is expected to be a values-driven, high-standard, and transparent infrastructure partnership.

‘‘It is our fervent hope and expectations that this plan will be pursued to its logical conclusion in order to bridge the infrastructural gap between the North and South.

‘‘The aim of pursuing quality infrastructure investment is to maximize the positive economic, environmental, social, and development impact of infrastructure and create a virtuous circle of economic activities while ensuring sound public finances.

‘‘This virtuous circle can take various forms in stimulating the economy,” he said.

In case you missed it

Last year, Vice President Yemi Osinbajo said Nigeria will need $3 trillion in the next 30 years to reduce its infrastructural deficit.

“It is clear that this deficit can only be made up by private investment. Private sector is 92 per cent of GDP, while the public sector is mere 8 per cent. So, the synergy between the public and private sector through Public-Private Partnerships (PPP) is really the realistic solution.

“The fact that only N2.49 trillion was appropriated for capital expenditure in 2020, reflects the importance of deliberate and pragmatic action to boost infrastructural spending,” Osinbajo said.

Nairametrics also reported in August this year that the African Development Bank disclosed that Africa’s slow industrialization process is caused by issues ranging from poor infrastructure to low competitiveness.

Nigerian forces are being challenged by the Biafra National Guard, which has unveiled ‘red devil rockets’

0

The Biafra National Guard (BNG) has declared that it is combat-ready and that Nigerian forces are not a threat.

The fighters unveiled what appear to be rockets named ‘Red Devil 01’ in a propaganda video posted to Facebook Tuesday night.

The alleged weapons were painted in the Biafran colors of black, green, red, and yellow.

“Biafra is real,” said BNG self-proclaimed leader ‘General’ Innocent Orji in his remarks.

“We have re-declared the Biafra nation’s sovereignty and raised our flag.” No matter what, I and my men will defend Biafra with every drop of our blood.

“We will defend our country and its borders, and we are not afraid of the soldiers.” We must take action. People’s support will enable us to save more lives.

“This isn’t 1967; we have our plans in place.” We’re not going to tell anyone what we’re going to do. “Nigerian soldiers will never be able to defeat us,” he stated.

The video was released days after troops in the South-Exercise East’s GOLDEN DAWN killed one BNG member and arrested another after a shootout.

The Army dismissed claims last week that the BNG was created by the Directorate of Military Intelligence (DMI) and the Department of State Services (DSS) to discredit the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB).

Okupe calls on the Federal Government to meet with IPOB for peace talks

0

The former aide to former President Goodluck Jonathan, Doyin Okupe, has urged the Federal Government to invite and hold meetings with the Independent Peoples of Biafra to discuss insecurity in the region.

“I hasten to call on the Federal Government to invite the leadership of IPOB to a peace meeting at this critical juncture in our nation’s history to listen to the complaints of the youths from the southeast and see how a true solution can be negotiated,” Mr Okupe said.

“I say this as someone who worked in government when Boko Haram was just getting started. The Federal Government’s presumed power made it appear absurd for the government to summon a ragtag group to a negotiating table.

“After more than ten years, thousands of deaths, human tragedies, and millions of internal human displacements, as well as billions of dollars wasted, I am convinced that not negotiating for peace abinitio was indeed a mistake.”

Okupe also talked about the drawbacks of overpolicing, using the Anambra election as an example.

“The police have deployed 34,000 officers for the Anambra election, and we do not know the numbers for the military and civil defense institutions. “While militarization and over-policing are unavoidable in Anambra, they can be comforting to the average citizen,” he added.

Mr Okupe is concerned that if the FG does not act quickly to address the issue of IPOB and over-policing, the consequences could be disastrous for the country’s future.

Local products should be patronized: Lawmaker

0

Senator Enyinnaya Abaribe, the Minority Senate Leader, has urged Nigerians to support local product production and patronage in order to boost the country’s export and foreign exchange profiles.

The lawmaker made the remarks during a press conference in Abuja ahead of the 8th and 2021 editions of the Made-In-Aba Trade Fair, which will take place on November 8 and 13 in the Federal Capital Territory.

According to Daily Trust, the Made-In-Aba Trade Fair is his constituency project, which is housed at the Nigerian Small and Medium Enterprises Development Agency (SMEDAN).

Abaribe, who stated that the move had the potential to solve the country’s perennial unemployment problems, also stated that it had the potential to create employment opportunities, particularly for the youth.

Dikko Umaru Radda, Director-General of SMEDAN, urged Abia State residents to take advantage of government intervention programs to improve their products and services, particularly in areas where they have comparative and competitive advantages.

According to him, the fair is an important tool for promotion, communication, marketing, networking, and idea cross-fertilization.

Radda also urged members of the National Assembly to follow in the footsteps of the fair project “by collaborating with SMEDAN in the adoption of similar programs at various levels for their constituents.”

NYSC DG meets Benue federal lawmaker, Hon Godday

The Director-General of the National Youth Service Corps, Brig-Gen Shuaibu Ibrahim, on Tuesday, met with the lawmaker representing Apa/Agatu federal constituency in Benue State, Hon. Samuel Odagboyi Godday.

The visit was on the sidelines of the budget presentation and defence by ministries, agencies and parastatals of government.

Shuaibu’s meeting with the lawmaker is believed to be in continuation of his renewed efforts at partnering with all critical stakeholders across the nation in his resolve to advance the scheme.

This comes days after some stakeholders commended the DG over the proposed establishment of the NYSC Trust Fund.

Ayuba Wabba, President of the NLC, sees danger ahead

0

As the countdown to 2023 begins, call it the lone voice of the one crying in the wilderness as we read in the Bible, Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) President, Ayuba Wabba, has warned that danger lies ahead if the country continues in its flagrant disregard for the nation’s and individual’s sanctity.

Wabba bemoans the desecration of the land by innocent bloodshed, which he believes must elicit vengeance, as well as politicians who work across party lines to advance individual and sectional interests, and the judiciary, which he believes is the last line of defense for ordinary people when it is infiltrated by corrupt individuals.

He also discusses what the NLC plans to do in 2023 to change the narratives, emphasizing the importance of people’s power in changing the rule.

The Labour leader also speaks openly about what has happened to Nigerian workers since the outbreak, explaining that all workers on fixed wages have now been pushed from prosperity to poverty

Nigerian workers’ situation as the country celebrates its 61st birthday

Thank you so much for everything. There is no doubt that the pandemic is real; in fact, the UN Secretary General just announced this morning that we have lost over 200 million workers worldwide. As a result, this has an impact on us in Nigeria, particularly in the informal sector and the private sector of the economy, which includes states.

As a result, with the economy’s problems, it’s been a difficult year. The microeconomic industries are not very encouraging, and virtually every fixed-wage worker has now been pushed from prosperity to poverty. It’s a fact of life.

The cost of goods and services has risen dramatically, in some cases by 100 percent.

I’ll use cooking gas as an example. Today, the price of cooking gas has increased by nearly 100%, and the same is true for goods and services.

This is how a country’s prosperity is measured. The prosperity of a country should reflect the prosperity of its citizens, which is what GDP stands for.

But here we are, with the National Bureau of Statistics providing us with some statistics that appear to indicate that things are improving, but the pockets of ordinary Nigerians, including workers, are drying up by the day, many are unable to send their children to school, and social security coverage has been reduced to almost nothing.

So I’d say it’s been moving from a worst-case scenario to a worst-case scenario over the last year.

Many workers in some of our industries have not been paid, and some are facing layoffs.

So far, we have painted a very bleak picture, but the real danger is the disconnect between our political elite and the general public. Some of those challenges aren’t seen as real challenges by them; in fact, given what has happened in the last month, their focus is already on 2023.

But I have warned that we must also take some of those challenges seriously and continue to provide good governance if not, if the focus has shifted to 2023, we should pray for a peaceful 2023, because first and foremost, we must preserve our country’s unity and issue of togetherness before we look at our political interests.

That is why I have strongly condemned the apparent divide between northern and southern governors. I believe what should preoccupy them is how to address the insecurity, dwindling fortune of our economy with the flow of the naira, ensuring that the commanding heights of our economy, particularly the manufacturing sector, are working and in place, and providing jobs for the teeming youths who are unemployed. We also have two types of young people: those who have been trained and are nearly qualified but are unemployed and roaming the streets. And we have a category of people who have not gone to the four corners of the classroom, have no education, no skill, and are now living in urban areas after being displaced from rural areas, and they are a threat to everyone.

So, in essence, nothing has been provided for them; they have no social security coverage, no ability to look for work, and the majority of what they do is to become tools, ready to be manipulated. They are, in fact, political thugs who, in the majority of cases, are responsible for banditry and other social vices.

So this is the real situation, and it is for this reason that NLC, as a pan-Nigerian organization, is very concerned. As I have repeatedly stated, NLC is a pan-Nigerian organization. Every tribe and religion are represented.

So, where they discuss tribal issues, we won’t be there; we won’t be there when they talk about dividing Nigeria; and where they talk about their own interests, the NLC won’t be there.

So, we’ve issued a strong warning to say that all of us should be concerned, particularly the political elite, because if we’re not careful, we’ll be preaching a message of division and discord, and at the end of the day, the country will be so divided that even uniting it will be difficult.

So that is the current situation, and I can tell you that it has not been rosy, in fact, it has been extremely bad, and many Nigerians are gullible to what is going on. And it’s for this reason that the poor are frequently blamed for their predicament.

When someone goes three days without eating, instead of looking at those he elected to represent him because there is a disconnect between them and him, he will look at his next neighbor, who is the reason he hasn’t eaten.

When a country reaches that point, it is something about which everyone should be concerned. That is where we are now, and that is why I said that, combined with the COVID-19 challenge, the working class and many Nigerians are in a very precarious position.

Jobs lost in Nigeria as a result of the government’s inaction during the pandemic?

One of the problems we face is the lack of reliable data. Even at the NLC level, I can’t say we have data because workers lose jobs every day.

In other countries, unemployment benefits provide reliable data because when you lose your job, you know you’ll be covered by social security, and you’ll go to register, either in the public or private sector, and your name and information will be collected.

However, in our case, neither the unions nor the informal sector have that.

NLC putting politicians aspiring to power on their toes

The situation we are in terms of mobilizing our people and our responses, if you see- on all topical issues, NLC have actually had a platform, different approaches to the issues, some it will be street protest. And I can give you a sizable number of processes that we have engaged, some advocacy but one thing that is obvious is that our politicians are becoming more and more adamant. You can organize the best strike, protest the best advocacy yet, nothing changes and therefore we are going further, this is about the five platform we are organising because of the centrality of this issue and for people to take responsibility, that’s why we are organising this round table.

The next one will be about our political engagement, that we also need to sensitise Nigerians because it’s obvious that the political elite are just using Nigerians to play chess.

At the eve of every election they bring theories and theories and because Nigerians are gullible because of the poverty they will actually buy some people over including the media professionals.

We need to hold our political elites accountable, that’s the function of NLC and the civil society organisations.

Even a sizable number of civil society organisation have been bought over.

You remember when we did protest in 2015 against fuel increase, all those that we worked together, they withdrew to say let’s allow time.

But we said no, as NLC if all our social partners are withdrawn, for posterity we will declare our action even if we are alone but time will come when Nigeria will say where is NLC to assist us. I made that statement, very profoundly because of the fact that we have seen that politicians are the same.

They are the same because of the fact that it’s about the class contestation versus we. And that is why it’s easy for them, to be in Party A in the morning and the evening, if his interest is not met jump over to Party B. It doesn’t happen anywhere in the world.

In fact, in other developed democracies, a Democrat will never change, he can vote somebody if he believes that the candidate of his party is not somebody that agrees with his philosophy. So he can go and vote a candidate but not for him to jump over from party A to party B. And that is what has made their democracy to be strong, stable and holding people accountable.

But in our own case, in fact, you will be surprised even the statement that somebody made earlier and when he is decamping the statement he will make. That is what has made our issue very pathetic.

So the responsibility squarely, we are going to take it up to continue to mobilize Nigerians using every means and this platform we are having is part of the means.

In the last two weeks, we have started our study cycle, we have reenergize the study cycle that is going to take place in the work place across all our unions. In fact, after the training, we have given them responsibility, we have also dedicated some resources to make sure that workers education is a continuum and that workers should be able to work assiduously to build an information dissemination process and educate many Nigerians because many Nigerians are gullible.

Let share with you part of the things that we will be doing.

There’s what is working in Nigeria. it’s a plan of what we wanted to do and it has worked else where, in the advanced democracies. In fact in the present regime in the US, unions played a very important role particularly our counterpart, the American federation……, that’s why the first person that Joe Biden fired was an employer that has been a torn in the flesh of workers at the labour commission and he openly campaigned for workers to join a union, that unions can actually bring a desired change.

We want to see leaders that can think in that way. We want to see leaders that will say let us build strong institutions instead of undermining all our institutions.

Today many of our institutions are being undermined, you can see judiciary that is supposed to be the hope of ordinary man.

Few weeks ago, the chief judge of the federation was intervening because judges were giving the same judgement, the same court of cognisance jurisdiction, giving contradictory pronouncement.

That means, the Independent of judiciary is also affected and so our critical institution. That is the difference between our democracy and advanced democracies.

In advanced democracies, the institutions are very strong they are stronger than any leader and they can call any strong leader to order, that was what happened in the case of the United States.

Even when their former President approached many courts, the courts were independent, the judgements were unanimous to say that you have lost the election please go and make sure you respect the rule of law. Same with their security agencies. All their security agencies were unanimous and all other institutions.

But in our own case, it’s about the interest, and if it’s about the interest, the institutions can be undermined.

So we want to strengthen institutions to play their traditional role of holding any person accountable, no matter his level in the society.

Labour Party

Yes, even the labour party, we are trying to reorganize the party because what has happened to the Labour Party is to the effect that the politicians try to harness the labour Party.

As we are aware, the party was formed, promoted by NLC to serve the interest of the workers, not only workers, NLC, TUC, our civil society organisations and Nigerians that want credible platform. But along the line, I think they have tried to harness the party to themselves and we had a cause to challenge it in the court. At the last judgement we got was that, yes, the party was registered by the NLC to promote the interest of Nigeria workers and that they should be all inclusive conference to bring about credible leaders. That has not been respected. We went back to the court and the last sitting, there was an adjournment and we are working towards making sure that we recover the party and then get people that are credible.

If we don’t get people that are credible then there would be no difference between the Labour Party and others.

So we want credible people at the helm of the affairs of the party and not only that, that people will be admitted into the party will not also be like others. It’s a party with a different philosophy, ideology of a working class. There must be criteria to give you a platform, you must earn the confidence of Nigerians, confidence of trade union movement that you are different from others. And the manifesto is explicit.

It is only the party that has logo of the family, ‘baba’, ‘mama’, ‘pikin.

All other parties, it’s either you have umbrella, animal, they’re not human centered.

We believe in human centered approach to development, not about primitive accumulation of wealth and cleverly that is why founding fathers know that the totality of what we will be doing as government will be about the people, welfare and wellbeing.

Basically this is how we want to engage the issues. I know that the issues are really overwhelming because it’s like a lone voice in the wilderness. But we are up to the task and we will continue to play our role. And many people have become very delusional. In fact, every day, I receive more than a thousand calls. Somebody will be on his bed relaxing, if he see a negative development, he will call Presidio what are you doing about this? And when you call for action, the same person will still be on the bed to ask you how the action succeeded. They don’t know that the people’s power need to be harnessed to change the rule

We need to change the rule to work for the people not for the political elites, and that is the issue that is confronting all of us as Nigerians.

So we will continue to offer our platform, proper engagement, speak truth to power and try to see how these can be changed. And Nigerians need to come to the side of labour to be able to get all of these.

How Nigeria got to this level

Well progressively, we have not met the progress that we ought to have met when you look at our resources, human and natural resources, ought not to be where we are and that’s why each time people make comparison with countries that we started together, China, Asia people make comparison. But for obvious reasons and I think for that of leadership because everywhere in the world that they were able to transform their country, you can center it to one leader that was progressive and forward looking.

Nigerians are good followers, I remember the days of War Against Indiscipline, and because we so much believe that system can be transformed, if you want to urinate you look back, left and right, you do it carefully.

Nigerians can change, the only issue is that we need leaders with foresight that have the people at the center of their heart and have requisite knowledge, the energy to be able to reform the system and make sure that we are able to work for the people.

Secondly, some of the neo-liberal policies that our leaders adopt hook line and sinker have been part of our problem and Labour has said that time without number.

You remember the issue of SAP, structural adjustment program by IMF. No where has it worked in Africa. I remember at one time their best example was Argentina until the economy of Argentina collapsed and there was no example again. And they have changed the model.

We must have home grown solution to problem. No two issues are the same. When they are talking of Liberalization, outsourcing, privatisation, I used to ask them, at what level of development, either America or Europe have they adopted some of those policies. Some of them were more than 100- 200 years.

We know that of UK, it was only Margret Thatcher. But at that time education was free, social services were free, people were able to develop, economies were built, critical infrastructure built-in Europe.

How will you compare our states even when our roads are not good? It will not work, that is the bane of our problem and that’s why we have not made the progress we ought to have made.

One, leadership deficits, long term plan have not been there. Even when you have plans, successive leaders don’t actually key into the plan.

In terms of resources, we have everything to arrive at greatness.

And then the issue of conspiracy theory. We have become a trading post for the entire world particularly Asia, Europe and America because of enormous resources that we have. They will come, buy our raw materials, go and refine it and come back to sell it to us. And our leaders could not do anything, that is the major issue that has affected our economy.

When our colonial masters were here, a decade after they left, everything was working. Peugeot assembling was here, Volkswagen, Beetle. That time you can afford to buy new car. Then my father bought a new motorcycle. Today, not everybody can afford new motorcycle.

Every worker then can afford one type of vehicle or the other, if your grade level does not allow you to get a loan to buy Peugeot 504, you can buy Ladder, Beetle, Panel Van.

Our currency was well appreciated, that was immediately after independence and in the first republic and thereafter, things started to go hay wire because most of those industries left and therefore we are nearly importers. And it started when we then recognise that importation pays than producing those products at home because we ought to have produced and use the entire West African market.

All our political elite that will receive the support of the West in most cases, some of those policies have been sank into their heads and they’re buying it. That’s why when they come into the office, it will be difficult to change some of those negative narratives.

Basically, we need to get people that will do the biding of Nigeria to change the negative narratives and we can then change the situation. If not, I don’t see how we will be able to stop lamentation and then begin to appreciate and celebrate our country.

I think the only thing that we celebrate is that the country is still one. There are many countries that have disintegrated. And we shouldn’t take it for granted.

But in terms of progress, we are not yet there.

Going into politics after office

You know that I will be in office till 2023, basically the process must have commenced then. My plan is not actually to jump into it, we can play some roles to bring about credible people. Possibly in the future after my term in the office.

The way things are going, if we don’t retract our steps and reorder our steps and make sure that we look at the interest of the country instead of the individual and sectional interest, I see danger ahead because all intent and purposes even the politicians are working across purposes. Nobody is looking at the country and that is where the danger is.

So from what is going on, except we are able to retract our steps and and God helps us because a very bad situation as it were in the past, God has always intervened.

You remember the issue of June 12, I was a student then, people were moving from North to East, every body was carrying his load on his head because nobody knew precisely the next moment and God in his mercy was able to stablize the system and at the end of the day, even the person that was at the center of the affairs died and there was a new beginning. That was how we were able to stablize to where we are. so God can intervene through any means but if we continue to go the way we are going basically I foresee danger and every right thinking Nigerian will tell you that there’s danger because where people that are supposed to unite us are now dividing us, looking at self centered interest, then that poses a lot of danger.

Basically, as someone that is optimistic, I believe that God will intervene because they said Nigeria is a very religious country and so in some of those cases, it’s not even our making, but God will make a way for the poor and less privileged.

I keep saying, the blood of the innocent that is shed on daily basis and nobody cares for them there will be vengeance. There’s no day you read a page of newspaper that the blood of the poor is not shed.

Obigwe: IPOB is not behind any election campaign or insecurity

0
Chinedu Obigwe is the Media Warriors Forum’s National Coordinator for the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA). In this interview, Obigwe, a candid political analyst who speaks his mind on any issue, discusses some key issues surrounding the Anambra governorship election.
I’ve said before in various forums that the situation is politically motivated. When I said the opposition was behind the killings, I didn’t mince words, and when I say the opposition, you know which party I’m talking about. What they hope to achieve in this situation is to instill fear in the minds of the people, so that Anambra voters are afraid to exercise their democratic right to vote on Election Day. They want to take advantage of the situation to rig the election by capitalizing on the anomaly. When you look at the situation, you’ll notice that they politicize the situation and use it to accuse the governor of abdicating his responsibilities every time there’s an attack. But, ironically, Senator Andy Uba, the APC governorship candidate, hails from Uga, Aguata, where the traditional rulers of the old Aguata, which include Orumba North, Orumba South, and Aguata, all came together and bestowed upon Governor Obiano the traditional title of Agunaechemba1 of Old Aguata Union as a result of the governor’s proactive security measures. Prior to Obiano’s arrival, Anambra was a haven for criminals, to the point where people celebrated traditional marriages in Lagos and other places outside the state. Our people in the Diaspora were afraid to return home because of violent crimes, but when Obiano came in, he stamped his feet on the ground and ensured that those criminal elements were dislodged and flushed out of the state, as someone who knew that the first thing to put in place for sustainable development in any state was security. Anambra has remained one of Nigeria’s safest states, and the current stage-managed situation is unlikely to change that. If you tell someone to go to Borno State right now, they will be skeptical, just as they are in our neighboring Imo right now, but because election season is approaching,

they are emphasizing the negative to score cheap political points. Even today, we see what is happening in Ebonyi state; there are killings here and there, but those areas have not been on the front burner. I just used the two Southeast states as an example to show that the security situation in Anambra is not as bad as the opposition portrays it. The APC is hoping to benefit politically from the events in Anambra. All they want is for ndi Anambra not to vote on election day, so they can get away with whatever they want, but their strategy isn’t working. To God be the glory, the APGA is campaigning despite their initial plan to prevent us from doing so. The APGA party is not only campaigning openly, but all of their supporters return home safely after each outing. Another encouraging development is President Buhari’s assurance to Governor Obiano that the election will be free and fair. The governor has not requested that President Buhari give him and the APGA an unfair advantage as the state’s ruling party. All he asked for was a level playing field where some people would not use the so-called federal might to intimidate others, and it is heartening to see President Buhari commit to that.

But people are already afraid and some already saying  they won’t come out to vote on the election day going by the  threat by IPOB that there will be no election in Biafran land starting with the Anambra guber. How confident are you that the election will witness popular participation?

Let me correct the impression.  People are linking both insecurity and no election campaign to IPOB but I don’t agree with that.  The Indigenous People of Biafra did not say there won’t be election in Anambra.  They are not the people behind the no- election campaign and insecurity in Anambra.  I’ve told you that the opposition particularly the APC and its candidate are desperate to take over Anambra State. They are doing all these so that when people shy away from coming out to vote, they will then activate their rigging machinery.  That is the truth.   On the issue of security, we have confidence in President Buhari while the police has also assured of adequate protection too.  People should not be scared but rather see the security agencies drafted for the election as friends. With about 5000 plus polling units and the over 30,000 number of policemen that will work on that day, there is assurance that every polling unit will record visible security presence across every part of the state.  Anambra electorates should get prepared to come out on the Election Day, cast their votes, wait for the declaration of results and ensure that their votes count. Once a winner emerges after the election, insecurity will be a thing of the past in the state and that tells you that the killings and shootings are politically motivated.

Obiano as APGA governor has been in government for almost eight years. Now that he is about to complete his tenure, do you think he has justified his stay for APGA to continue in office after him?

Obiano has done marvelously well in governance. He has done what he promised ndi Anambra he would do. Again, when you want to judge Obiano, you have to judge him based on the economic situation in the country and the money accruing to the state coffers under his watch.  During the past administration, there was what they called the oil boom but under the Buhari administration, there have been lots of economic challenges. But Gov. Obiano has performed above board despite the challenges. During the time of economic recession, he came up with various stimulus packages to ensure that the recession didn’t affect Anambra people and it really worked. He has proved to be a good manager of resources and crisis too by the way he managed the recession crisis, COVID-19 crisis and other issues that have come up in the state.

To me, Obiano is the best governor Anambra has produced so far. He crowned his achievements with the legacy project of the International cargo airport, the international conference centre and the stadium, three of the best of its kind in Nigeria. The reason why People will vote for APGA in this election is simple; if you look at Obiano’s plan in producing his successor, you discover that what he had in mind was this “let Anambra people have the best and if I hand over, I can go and rest”. Most of the fellow contenders who wanted the governorship slot told Obiano not to allow Soludo become governor because he (Soludo) is wiser than him (Obiano) and that he (Soludo) will jail him (Obiano) if he becomes governor and stuffs like that. They will tell Obiano that they will be loyal to him as his boys and not Soludo who seems to be independent minded but Obiano doesn’t listen to such cheap blackmail. What Obiano has been interested in is giving Anmabra people the best. He doesn’t need a lame duck or someone who will come and sycophantly tell him “I will be loyal to you and because of that, please let me succeed you”. What he is looking at is someone that will give ndi Anambra the best and he says it openly when he goes to campaign that Soludo will do better than him. I love that man Obiano because he is someone that tells you his mind and feelings. People did so many things to dissuade him from supporting Soludo to emerge as APGA candidate but he insisted that Solduo is the best and in all honesty, Soludo is really the best. If Obiano was your everyday Nigerian politician who would like to have a puppet that will be dictated to after leaving office, he would have gone for such feeble characters but he has shown leadership by insisting on handing over the state to the best hand in the person of Soludo.

Then talking about Soludo whom you have been supporting, some are of the view that he is too elitist and may not make a good governor. Do you have confidence in him to win the election and also do well in office?

Of all the contestants, it is only Soludo that you can see people spending their money for because he is a marketable brand. He has many support groups drumming support for him for the past three years and they don’t go to him for money. Even his nomination form was bought for him by these support groups. Go to the grassroots, even the old woman in the village will tell you that she is for Soludo.  Those who accuse him of being too elitist talk from the point of misinformation because when you get closer to him, you see a down-to-earth person.  Do you know that his phone number remains the same over the years and not some of these dubious characters that change their contact every now and then? Many don’t know that he is a philanthropist because he doesn’t like blowing his trumpet.  Those saying that he is not electable are just afraid of his intimidating profile and pedigree. Let me tell you, prelude to the primaries, the opposition did everything to ensure that he was not in the ballot because they knew that he is the only threat they have but I tell you that it is his time. I love him as a firm character. He is not a backstabber. If he is with you, he is with you in the open and not some that will come from behind the scene.  His ambition to serve the people of the state as governor is driven by people at the grassroots.

But now people are leaving APGA in droves to APC, don’t you think it’s an ominous sign that the party may be on its last lap in Anambra?

No. APGA is waxing strong. For those who left the party, they are not men of character and you know men of character are very rare to find in politics these days. But let me tell you, the lawmakers that left APGA did that as a clever move because they know they can’t return to the House after this tenure, moreso, as much as everyone knows that they were lured to join APC. But on a clear note, Lawrence Ezeudu from Dunukofia is in his second tenure as a lawmaker and he knows he can’t return. It was the same thing for Ifedioramma of Njikoka, most of those local governments they are representing have many towns and they rotate their representatives across the towns, so the two can’t go back again. And even Nonso Smart of Nnewi also knows that it has always been one term for Nnewi lawmakers. For me, APGA is waxing stronger and we have capable hands that will keep the party moving higher. One thing I like about APGA is that the spirit of Ojukwu is in every APGA member to the extent that they can hardly betray the party.

Electing one is one thing, performance is another thing. If Soludo becomes governor, do you think he will perform?

Soludo has a verifiable record of outstanding performance. From the university to the post of advisor to the president. As CBN governor too and even leaving office, President Buhari invited him to be a member of his economic team. If he can be doing it for the Federal Government and other international bodies, he will definitely perform creditably as governor.  People tell him that he is a presidential material but he wants to start from the state. Politics aside, Soludo’s antecedents tower above all other party candidates.  Propaganda cannot lead anybody to the Government House.

Does Governor Obiano actually deserve all the accolades you have been pouring on him?

No one is a saint but Obiano and the wife are two characters that I love so much because they don’t play hanky- panky politics.  They have good conscience that they can hardly hurt a fly but Obiano is a warrior. If you dare him, he will show you his strength. The wife really complemented Obiano’s efforts in the state and I praise her for that. Obiano is also a man of his words because the promise he made to Anambra people, he has fulfilled it.
