Group commends NYSC for promoting national integration in the southwest

0

The Coalition of Progressive Yoruba Youths (CPYY) has hailed the National Youth Service Corps scheme for fostering unity across the country, particularly in the southwest.

The group gave the commendation after a strategic tour of the scheme’s operations in the region.

Speaking at a press conference on Friday in Lagos, President, Kola Salau, saluted the NYSC authorities for prioritising the welfare and security of corps members at a time the nation is plagueed by multiple security and economic challenges particularly COVID-19.

The Coalition of Progressive Yoruba Youths said it is satisfied with the state of the NYSC facilities and measures across the South West orientation camps.

“As a group of patriots, with unflinching belief in one united Nigeria, we wish to commend the leadership of the NYSC under the Director-General, Brig.-Gen. Shuaibu Ibrahim, for using the scheme to promote national integration and unity, at this time, when the country is passing through a very challenging period in its journey to nationhood,” Salau said.

He added that the “NYSC scheme has not derailed from its set objective, as it has continued to serve as one of the only true nationalistic institutions in the country today, encouraging cultural integration and building bridges of cohesion and harmonious coexistence across the diverse ethnic nationalities in Nigeria”.

The group further noted that the proposed NYSC trust fund is the climax of the many reforms the scheme has witnessed over the years, appealing to “well-meaning Nigerians to support the trust fund, so as to mitigate the devastating effect of the unemployment rate in the country”.

Salau added, “The Trust fund which if approved by Nigerians and their representatives at the National Assembly, will provide start up capitals for corps members after their service year, will equally prove effective in curtailing the post service depression and hopelessness that often affect majority of Nigeria’s ex corps members, who after a meritorious service to their fatherland, are ushered into a bleak future, devoid of a platform to release their energy, and eke out a living. This will also minimize crime as the youths will now channel their vigour towards more productive ventures that will positively benefit the society”.

The CPYY noted that the “NYSC has also undertaken practical measures to ensure the welfare and safety of corps members. We are also confident that the efforts of the scheme to get a rebate on flight charges for corps members, will help eliminate the risk often associated with the transportation of corps members to their various states of deployment”.

It, however, expressed gratitude to the Director-General of NYSC, Brig.-Gen. Shuaibu Ibrahim and the various state coordinators for the conducive environment availed the group during this tour.

There are strong indications that the Federal Ministry of Youth and Sports Development will take full charge of Nigeria’s basketball World Cup campaign, as well as the participation of one of the country’s clubs in the Basketball Africa League, beginning this month.

“This taskforce will ensure that plans are drawn up to select Nigerian representatives to the Basketball Africa League as well as the D’Tigers’ preparations for the World Cup qualifiers.” So you can see that the Ministry is now fully in charge in order to avoid any embarrassment for Nigeria,” a top Sports Ministry official confirmed.

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission has charged Mohammed Gapchia-Gana, alias Mamman Shuwa, with three counts of criminal breach of trust and fraud before Justice Aisha Kumaliya of the Borno State High Court in Maiduguri.

The defendant allegedly defrauded three men — Mohammed Hassan, Fati Buba, and Falmata Fali — by selling a plot of land on Damboa Road in Maiduguri to each of them separately.

He was accused of receiving N850,000 from Hassan, N700,000 from Buba, and N650,000 from Fali for the same plot of land.

According to the EFCC’s Head of Media and Publicity, Mr Wilson Uwujaren, an investigation revealed that after one of the complainants began construction on the land, the Borno State Geographic Information Services demolished the structure on the grounds that the piece of land was a government layout and not owned by the defendant.

As a result, the complainants decided to file a petition against Gapchia-Gana.

According to the statement, the defendant pleaded not guilty to the three counts filed by the anti-graft agency against him.

The Delta State Police Command has arrested three people in connection with the murder of Emmanuel, a 60-year-old farmer.

According to reports, the victim was hacked to death by a hunter, Akporuaro Monday, for refusing to stop setting traps on his (the hunter’s) farm.

The incident occurred in the Delta State community of Orogun.

According to our source, Monday killed the farmer after warning him not to set traps for game in his territory.

According to sources, the farmer ignored the warning until things went wrong on October 30, 2021, when the hunter allegedly killed him.

On Thursday, our correspondent in Warri saw a video clip of some people carrying the deceased away from the scene of the incident.

Israel Joe, a human rights activist, urged the state police command to ensure that justice was served in the case.
The activist stated in a letter to the Orogun Divisional Police Officer that after the incident, the suspect left the community until his son was arrested.
“Because he was forced to return and report to your station that he murdered the victim rather than his son, his son should be released.”

“The IPO is accused of persuading the family to accept a settlement in violation of the Nigeria Police Force’s ethics and laws.” Nothing but justice is desired by the victim’s family.

“A murder case goes beyond a division’s jurisdiction, and such issues should be transferred to the state CIID (Homicide) for further investigations and prosecution,” Joe added.

DSP Bright Edafe, the state Police Public Relations Officer, confirmed the incident and said the investigation was ongoing.

In one year, the value of currency in circulation increased to N2.9 trillion

0

According to a recent report by the Central Bank of Nigeria’s (CBN) currency operations department, currency-in-circulation (CIC) increased by 19.06 percent from N2,441.67 trillion at the end of December 2019 to N2,907.13 trillion at the end of December 2020.

The increase in CIC reflected the economy’s continued reliance on cash. According to the CIC, a greater proportion was in higher denomination banknotes (N100, N200, N500 and N1000).

In terms of volume and value, higher denomination banknotes accounted for 63.47 percent and 98.08 percent of total CIC, respectively.

As of the end of December 2020, the volume of lower denomination banknotes (N5, N10, N20, N50) accounted for 28.43% of total CIC and 1.92% in terms of value.

According to the annual report, a total of 173,585 boxes of banknotes valued at N980,758.00 million were processed in 2020, compared to 260,651 boxes of banknotes valued at N1,533,729 million in 2019. This represents a 33.40 percent decrease in the number of boxes or a N552,971 million decrease in the value of processed banknotes.

Separately, the bank stated that due to the downturn in global trade in 2020, the receipt and authentication of foreign currency deposits by Deposit Money Banks (DMBs) will be significantly reduced.

In addition, the bank saw a significant decrease in the volume and cost of foreign exchange procurement. Over the course of 2020, a total of $1,830 billion was obtained.
This figure represents a decrease of $2,120 billion, or 53.67 percent, from the $3,950 billion obtained in 2019.

According to the report, this was used to fund Bureaux De Change (BDC) operations, payment of estacode, and Personal Travel Allowances (PTA) to Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs).

The apex bank stated in the report signed by the director in charge of currency operations departs, Ahmed Umar, that despite the limitations caused by the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic and its impact in 2020, it still completed the upgrade of the Cash Activity Reporting Portal (CARP) for transmission of currency management data from the financial industry to the Nigeria Inter-Bank Settlement System (NIBSS).

Aside from that, the CBN boasted that it had completed the development of the Mint tracking system application, needs assessment on the infrastructure, user sensitization, test run at 5 branches, and end-to-end system tests in preparation for the pilot launch in 2021; begun the establishment of the Currency Lab for Banknote quality assessment, authentication, and independent investigations, as well as adjudicating cases of suspected counterfeit banknotes; and registered an IP.

Mr Umar stated that the central bank carried out the framework for CBN direct intervention for the disbursement of lower denomination banknotes to approved beneficiaries via their bankers in order to improve availability and accessibility.

I stopped going to church because pastor always criticizing Buhari — Adesina

0

Femi Adesina, the Special Adviser to the President on Media and Publicity, claims he stopped attending a church in Abuja because the pastor was constantly criticizing the President, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retd.).

This was stated by Adesina in an article titled ‘This Kumuyi is Simply Different’ published on Thursday in support of a statement made by the General Superintendent of the Deeper Christian Life Ministry, Pastor William Kumuyi.

Although Adesina did not specify which church he left, according to his public profile, he is a member of the Foursquare Gospel Church, where he was ordained a pastor and has been a member since 1988.

The President’s spokesman said in the article that it was unfortunate that some pastors had turned their pulpits into soapboxes from which they spew hatred.

“I used to attend an Abuja church from 2015 to 2018, until the pastor began to see himself as someone who had to bring the Buhari government down,” he wrote. It was all kinds of criticism from the pulpit, Sunday after Sunday. But I persevered because it was a branch of a church I had been attending for over 30 years. Until one day, he went too far.

“The Dapchi girls were kidnapped, and the pastor did not call President Buhari that Sunday.” It was appalling that such things could be said from the pulpit. But I sat through the sermon, or what was supposed to be a sermon, for a long time. I then went home, wondering where the God’s church was going.”

Adesina stated that after the majority of the Dapchi girls were rescued, the pastor did not think it was appropriate to commend the President for his subsequent service.

However, the President’s aide praised Kumuyi for saying last week that Christians should not “disdain those in power because they appear to be failing to deliver on electoral promises.”

While a former Vice-Chancellor of Ajayi Crowther University, Prof. Dapo Asaju, was within his rights to be upset about the state of the country, he added that the Buhari administration was doing a lot to improve the country’s fortunes.
According to Adesina, some men of God predicted that Buhari would lose the 2019 election, but it turned out to be a forgery.

“Regardless of their titles, I hear bishops, apostles, prophets, pastors, and evangelists cursing the government and issuing doomsday warnings.” One even publicly stated that the Buhari administration would end before the 2019 elections. But the man won handsomely, and that preacher is still strutting and fretting on the pulpit every week, not repenting in sackcloth and ashes,” Adesina said.

He noted that during the 2020 #EndSARS protests, some pastors came out to support the protesting youths, but they quickly returned to their shells when the protests became out of hand.

“Pastor Kumuyi also says that if you are a true believer in Christ, you would not go on the rampage, destroying government property,” Adesina added. However, this was not the case in the country in October of last year. Under the guise of EndSARS, the country was almost completely destroyed.

“Unfortunately, they were encouraged by pastors and preachers who simply despise the fact that their President is a Fulani man.” Many of them are on record as encouraging the protesters until things turned ugly and awry. And then the pastors vanished into thin air. There was no word of caution or restraint as cities burned and police officers were killed and even eaten up.”
