The Speaker of the House, Femi Gbajabiamila, has ordered that anyone who provides forged COVID-19 certifications be arrested and prosecuted.

His remarks came after Dr. Ifedayo Adetifa, Director-General of the Nigerian Centre for Disease Control (NCDC), announced that some of those involved in the illegal activity had been apprehended and turned over to the Department of State Security (DSS).

Dr. Adetifa went on to say that some corrupt individuals allegedly worked with airport officials to commit the crime.

This prompted the speaker to propose legislation to establish a government agency similar to the TSA to monitor airport operators in Nigeria.

“It’s not going to be one of those sessions where there will be no outcomes, I think one of the outcomes will be a law that specifically sets up an agency of government to oversee the operations of the airports like the TSA.

“I think the TSA appears to be the silver bullet that cures most of the things we heard here and the chairmen of the relevant committees in the House, led by the Aviation Committee, hopefully, will begin to put this together. Hopefully, within the next two week, we will have a draft of the bill,” he said.

“The suspects, who confessed to the crimes of conspiracy, murder, attempted murder and wilful damage were arrested in their criminal hideouts in Lagos and Nasarawa States where they were hibernating to evade arrest after the dastardly act.

“During interrogation, the suspects gave a blow-by-blow account of how the brutal attack on the deceased police officer and other injured police officers was carried out and the criminal roles each played.

Their arrest was facilitated by credible, actionable intelligence.” the statement read.
CSP Ajisebutu, however, added that all the suspects will be arraigned at the Yaba Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday.

“Recall that in a press release issued on September 24, the Lagos State Commissioner of Police, CP Hakeem Odumosu, vowed to arrest all suspects involved in the attack on the policemen.”

The Nigerian Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas (NUPENG) has given the federal government a two-week strike notice, raising the prospect of fuel shortages across the country in the coming weeks.

This was stated in a statement signed on Monday by NUPENG President Williams Akhoreha and General Secretary Olawale Afolabi.

The strike notice was one of the decisions reached at the union’s special national delegates conference on Thursday, according to the union.
It cited nonpayment of workers’ salaries and benefits as one of the reasons for its decision.

Irregular Mobilization: NYSC vows resistance to unqualified graduates

The National Youth Service Corps has restated its readiness to uphold the sanctity of its mobilisation process.

It said it would resist every form of sharp practices from some Corps Producing Institutions in some African countries, while soliciting the support of the Federal Ministry of Education, Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the National Universities Commission in fighting the battle to ensure that Nigerian youths who studied outside the shores of Nigeria are not short-changed.

NYSC Director-General, Brigadier General Shuaibu Ibrahim stated this today in Abuja, in his address at the second meeting with representatives of Corps Producing Institutions of some African Countries and other critical stakeholders in the mobilisation process.

He added that the meeting, which aimed at entrenching the culture of regular contact with universities and other higher institutions of learning as provided by the law establishing the Scheme would also sustain the gains recorded in the maiden edition of the meeting held two years ago.

Ibrahim decried the outright sale of degree certificates to persons who never saw the four walls of the university, adding that those category of persons were unable to communicate in English language or defend their qualifications.

“The vacuum which existed between the Scheme and foreign Corps Producing Institutions created by communication gap gave rise to some unimaginable malpractices and irregularities on the part of the institutions, especially those within our neighbouring countries in West Africa.

The most worrisome was the outright sale of degree certificates to persons who never saw the four walls of the university. The effect of such a development on our national life cycle can only be imagined”, the DG said.

Ibrahim stated further that the long-standing tradition of routine evaluation and review of the Scheme’s performances in the mobilisation process with its critical stakeholders in the country has given the hope that the Scheme is on the roadmap to success in the foreign segment of the mobilisation process.

The Director, Corps Mobilization department, Mrs Victoria Ango said constructive engagement and method of data collection has helped the NYSC to reduce irregularities and errors in the process.

She stated that challenges such as bogus number, diplomatic hurdles and other bottle-necks associated with establishing regular contact with foreign Corps Producing Institutions have remained unresolved for many years until recently.

The Director added that the Scheme would continue to explore the best method to maintain reliable contact with institutions yet to be reached.

“We will continue to address copious challenges in youth mobilisation for the sake of our regional growth and development of our respective nation states”, she said.

In her goodwill address, the NYSC National Governing Board Chairman, Ambassador Fatima Balla Abubakar said the negative tendencies from unscrupulous persons attempting to illegally participate in National Service potends a grave danger if left unchecked.

She commended NYSC Management for conveying the meeting adding that the last meeting exposed some of the malpractices in some Corps Producing Institutions in the West African Sub-region.

There were goodwill messages from the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja, Alhaji Muhammad Musa Bello, represented by the Director, Youth, Mrs Asabe Umar, while Mr Koli Salihu Mongodida represented the Minister of Education, Dr Dakwak Gloria, represented the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and Mr Cisser Lepare Karim, First Consellor, represented the Ambassador of Cote de Voire.

#EndSARS: Lai Mohammed lied, he should be detained and dismissed

President Muhammadu Buhari should fire his Minister of Information and Culture, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, immediately, according to the Human Rights Writers Association of Nigeria (HURIWA).

According to the group, Mohammed should be fired for lying to Nigerians and the rest of the world.

HURIWA made the statement in response to the report of the Lagos State Government-appointed Panel of Investigation into the incident that occurred on October 20, 2020, at the popular Lekki Toll Gate in Lagos State.

The police and soldiers of the Nigerian Army were accused of killing defenseless youths protesting police brutality and bad governance in Nigeria, according to a report released on Monday.

Mohammed, in a series of press conferences denied the massacre and even made the CNN to retract its report.

Despite the Federal Government’s stance, the report showed obvious evidence that there was indeed a massacre at the Lekki tollgate.

HURIWA, therefore, called for the dismissal, arrest and trial of Mohammed for his egregious falsehood which has now been contradicted by a judicial panel of investigation in Lagos.

HURIWA made the demand in a media statement today.

The 309-page report detailed how the Army and Police disregarded their rules of engagement during the protest.
The group recalled that Mohammed also faulted the claim by Amnesty International that no fewer than 12 protesters were killed in Lagos State by security operatives during the #EndSARS protest.

HURIWA in its statement said it “is asking President Muhammadu Buhari as a biological father of many well-educated children, to order the arrest and prosecution of his minister of information Lai Mohammed for committing a grave and heartless offence that is equivalent to the denial of the Holocaust of the 6 million Jews by Adolf Hitler which is punishable by nearly half a century of incarceration.

“HURIWA is also commending the brave members and Chairperson of the Lagos State Judicial Panel of Inquiry on the #ENDSARS PROTESTS especially the circumstances surrounding the massive cases of extrajudicial killings by the Army and armed police when these armed forces opened fire with lethal weapons targeted at the unarmed protesters.”

The rights group has asked the President not to sweep the lawlessness of the security agencies under the carpet.

It also urged Buhari not to allow his information minister to get away with the impunity of denying the massacre that happened before the eyes of the world and which was captured live on video cameras.

HURIWA said if Buhari failed to take any action, he will be remembered long after he has retired from public office as a dictator who oversaw the genocide of young protesters.

It said the generations unborn will never forgive him for this.

NERC: Electricity Regulatory consumers not mandated to pay for prepaid meters under NMMP

The Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) says consumers are not mandated to pay for the prepaid meters under the National Mass Metering Programme (NMMP).

The commission said this in a statement issued in Abuja on Monday.

Last week, the commission increased the prices of both single-phase and three-phase prepaid electricity meters.

It had said the upward review of meter prices is due to “the recent changes in macro-economic parameters.”

“We wish to reiterate that the NMMP designed to provide all consumers of electricity with meters is a policy intervention of the Federal Government supported by the Central Bank (CBN) concessionary loans to Electricity Distribution Companies (DisCoS),” the statement reads.

“This laudable initiative is still very much on course as a total of over 900, 000 units of meters have so far been installed under the takeoff scheme without any payment by benefiting consumers.

“While this doesn’t cover many of the unmetered customers, we are pleased to inform electricity consumers that the next phase under which about four million units of meters would be procured from local meter manufacturers has commenced.

“Pending the conclusion of the NMMP, procurement processes and the commencement of manufacturing and installation, consumers may elect to acquire a meter from the Meter Asset Programme (MAP).”

According to NERC, the regulatory framework approved by the commission under MAP/NMMP Regulation allows for a refund of meter’s cost through energy credits to the customer at the time of vending.

The commission said that the recently issued notice by the commission on the adjusted cost of meter intended to protect consumers from erratic pricing by MAP.
