Corps Members As The Unsung National Heroes!

It takes a great dosage of patriotism for anyone to be glorified as a national hero for his country. Experience has indicated that patriotism to Nigeria is a rare virtue among Nigerians. But it is an essential ingredient and the self-sacrifice every citizen must make to build the anticipated virile and strong nation.

In recent times, members of the National Youth Service Corps ( NYSC) have exemplified the rarest spirit and courage of patriotism to Nigeria during the mandatory one year service to the nation. They have dared deadly territories and conquered multiple daunting challenges for the sake of serving Nigeria, their fatherland.

Particularly, under the leadership of the incumbent NYSC Director General, Brigadier General Shuaibu Ibrahim Ph.D, Corps members and the scheme have assumed new dimensions of reorientation and excellence. And in tandem, corps members have consistently dispensed themselves as patriotic heroes and heroines of the national struggle for stability and have been admirable partners in moments of national emergencies.

As foresighted Gen. Ibrahim’s agenda since 2019, when President Muhammadu Buhari entrusted him with the leadership of the NYSC scheme, he enunciated an agenda for himself. He proclaimed his vision of the NYSC as to “…sustain effective utilization of the potentials of Corps Members for optimal benefit; to pursue a technologically driven organization to deepen effective service delivery; to improve on the welfare and security of corps members and staff; strengthen existing collaboration with stakeholders; and reinvigorate NYSC ventures and Skill Acquisition and Entrepreneurship Development programme in line with the NYSC Act for greater impact.”

Today, Corps members have blended with this vision in service to Nigeria. Former American President, Theodore Roosevelt explained the clearest meaning of patriotism. He said, “Patriotism means to stand by the country. It does not mean to stand by the president or any other public official, save exactly to the degree in which he himself stands by the country. It is patriotic to support him insofar as he efficiently serves the country.” This is the exact manifestation of Corps members in Nigeria today.

As first kicker, Corps members are the greatest symbols and steady manifestations or consummation of Nigeria’s efforts at national integration, unity, togetherness and peace! Some Nigerians hardly pay attention to scanty details. But it is exemplary that Corps members forsake the comfort of their homes and accept posting to serve their country in completely strange lands, far away from their home states.

Corps members unreservedly interact and blend with their new hosts, by learning and exchanging new cultures and traditions. They freely make life-time friendships which are not deterred by the sentiments of tribe or religion. Also, they render appreciable community services to Nigerians in these new domiciliary abodes in the spirit of love and fraternity.

Youth Corpers also take incredible risks for the sake of their country. Available statistics have shown the intervention and active participation of these young Nigerian graduates in national health crises emergency, such as their conscription into the control of epidemics like Lassa fever, Ebola, and Cholera among others.

But most impressively, Corps members throughout the federation were at the forefront of the battle against combating the wild spread of COVID-19 pandemic in the country. Corps members, embarked on penetrative sensitization campaigns; whlist most Nigerian communities enjoyed free hand sanitizers, facemasks, liquid soaps et al, courtesy of serving corpers as their contribution in bringing succour to the distressed populace.

The administration of President Muhammadu Buhari launched an ambitious policy on promotion of robust agriculture with various initiatives. There are scores of NYSC farms dotting the landscapes of many states in Nigeria; from North to South measuring over 60, 000 hectares and still expanding. Corpers have actively picked up the challenge of President Buhari’s rice policy by cultivating tens of thousands of rice plantations every cropping season, which is have harvested and processed in NYSC Rice Mills for consumption. It is a welcome development that serving Corps members are contributing to national food sufficiency and security.

Furthermore, the knowledge corps members acquire through the scheme’s partnership with Access and Unity Banks to fund Business Plan Development programmes for Corps Members, alongside, the British American Tobacco Nigeria Foundation (BATNF) is also fruitful. The agricultural skills and business training, farm internship, mentoring and farm input supplies extended to serving corpers have tuned around the farms fortunes of some rural communities in agro-businesses and other investments.

Many Nigerians are oblivious of the pleasant reality that countless Corps members have also been indirectly enlisted into the FGN’s campaigns to tackle the prevalent and frightening unemployment rate in the country in their post-service years. Through the experience acquired during Orientation Camps through the Skills Acquisition and Entrepreneurship Development programme (SAED) has equipped most Corpers with self-sustaining practical skills, which many have converted into real time advantage in the post service years.

SAED has enabled thousands of Corps members to venture into investments and employed the services of other Nigerians. Those Nigerians who have benefited from these gestures have sustained their applause for the scheme.

Additionally, the engagement of Corps members by INEC as adhoc staff in the conduct of general elections in the country has significantly reduced the prevalence of connivance with dubious politicians to rig or manipulate the electoral process. While its undeniable that the electoral system in Nigeria is still flawed with malpractices, Corps members who serve in the capacity of adhoc staff during elections have substantially conferred credibility on the electoral process in many troublesome areas.

This is most times done at the risk of the personal lives of Corps members or they face dangers which would not have come their path ordinarily, just because they are patriotic citizens, with an overriding zeal to see a better Nigeria.

In most rural communities, Corp members market themselves as the Ambassadors of Nigeria! They serve as bridges between rurality and modernity, without grudges because the interest of the nation is paramount in their hearts. So, in remote communities, where regular teachers reject postings, a Corps member accepts the challenge to serve as a teacher. He or she endures all hardships and deprivations to serve the country and performs the assignment of imparting knowledge to tender Nigerians committedly and distinctively.

Therefore, in or out of the service year, Nigerians with the imprimatur of the NYSC make Nigeria and her citizens proud. Corps members truly represent the idealistic posturing of true patriots in the arduous task of Nation-building. It is only Godly for Nigerians to support Corps members in order to continue to bridge the gulf in critical areas of the economy in this collective journey of existentialism for a greater nation. Youth Corpers are undoubtedly, the unsung heroes and heroines of Nigeria.

A Nigerian couple was apprehended after selling a teen girl to Burkina Faso for prostitution.

A man and his wife were apprehended by the Nigeria Police Force’s Delta State Command for child trafficking.
According to Naija News, the suspects and two other relatives were apprehended for allegedly trafficking Chiamaka, 13, to Burkina Faso for prostitution.

The suspects are accused of luring the adolescent to the West African country for the dirty job by promising to help her find a housekeeper job.

Chiamaka was told when she arrived in the French-speaking country that she had been bought for $150,000, that she would make 1.2 million for her madam, and that she would have to work extra months to earn her freedom.

On Sunday, November 21, while handing over the minor to Mrs Chinwe Okah, the state Commissioner for Women Affairs and Social Development, the Secretary to the Ebonyi Progressives Union, Delta State, Emmanuel Uduma, said the abused teenager was taken from her village at Ikwo, in the Ikwo Local Government Area of Ebonyi State.

Chiamaka, according to Uduma, was duped and taken to Burkina Faso for prostitution.

He went on to say that the girl managed to flee and informed the authorities, which led to her repatriation to Nigeria.

The perpetrators who lured the girl to Delta State before transporting her to Burkina Faso, he said, were apprehended by a team of police officers working alongside the Ebonyi Forum in Delta State and were awaiting trial in court.

The group’s chairman assured the commissioner that justice would be served in the case as a deterrent to others.

While receiving Chiamaka, the state commissioner of police assured him that the state government would continue to safeguard the interests of all residents and indigenes.

In her remarks, Okah praised the forum for its efforts in ensuring the girl’s return to the state.

She also praised the group for responding quickly and ensuring that the case was taken to court so that justice could be served fully.

The commissioner promised that the state government would look after the victim and help her realize her dream of returning to school.

Davido: Daddy Freeze attacks Nigerian pastors

Daddy Freeze, a critic, has slammed Nigerian pastors after singer Davido donated N250 million to orphanage homes to help the less fortunate.

Davido received a N200 million donation for his 29th birthday, which he supplemented with another N50 million before donating the funds to orphanage homes.

On his Instagram page, Daddy Freeze claimed that they gave Davido money for a Rolls Royce, but that he gave it to the less fortunate.
He claimed that Nigerian pastors would receive funds from charitable offerings and use them to purchase Rolls Royces.

“They gave Davido money for a Rolls Royce, and he gave it to the needy,” H wrote. Pastors, on the other hand, took money intended for the poor and used it to buy Rolls Royces.

“However, Davido is materialistic, whereas your pastors are spiritual.”

Road accidents in Abuja claimed the lives of 159 people and injured 1592 others

According to the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), 149 people died and 1572 were injured in 859 road accidents in Abuja between January and November this year.

At the 2021 Special Marshal Sectorial Workshop in Abuja, Oga Ochi, the Sector Commander of the Federal Road Safety Corps in the Federal Capital Territory, revealed this.

According to him, many of the accidents were caused by road users’ disobedience of traffic rules and a lack of patience.
Overspeeding was found to be the cause of 75% of road accidents, according to him.

He stated that unless the trend is reversed, it will have a significant impact on economic growth.

“If this trend is not addressed and reversed quickly, it could become a major impediment to FCT’s economic growth,” he said.

As Nigerians respond positively to the Ministry of Works and Housing portal, which opened last Tuesday for a chance to subscribe to over 5,000 houses under the Federal Government’s National Housing Programme, Mr. Babatunde Fashola, SAN, the Minister of Works and Housing, has announced that the Ministry has received a total of 7,315 applications for allocation.
Fashola, who recently testified before the Senate Committee on Lands, Housing, and Urban Development in support of his ministry’s 2022 budget, also provided the Committee with documents detailing the number of applications submitted, completed, and pending processing, as well as a breakdown of the number by state.

The Committee expressed satisfaction with the development in the Housing Sector at the conclusion of the defense, which took the form of a robust interaction, with many, including the Chairman, Senator Sam Egwu, noting with delight that with the portal now open, the Ministry has truly launched out.

The Minister, who said the prices ranged from N7.2 million to N16.5 million for the different categories of houses, explained the criteria for pricing the different categories of houses, pointing out that one of the factors that made the difference in price between the Programme’s houses and those being built by private developers was size.

He informed members of the Committee that the program’s house categories included 1, 2, and 3 bedroom semi-detached bungalows, as well as condominiums (blocks of flats), and that there are price differences among the categories of houses based on size and space, with all bungalows, for example, having adjoining land, making them more expensive than flats.

“When compared to what is available in the private sector in terms of size, the one bedroom with 77sqm of living space, the two bedroom with 90sqm, and the three bedroom with 137sqms are by far larger than houses built by private developers and justify the prices placed on them,” Fashola continued.

The Minister also stated that a one bedroom flat in a condominium is 60 square meters, a two bedroom flat is 76 square meters, and a three bedroom flat is 110 square meters, all of which are larger than what is available in the conventional market, adding, “You cannot get them at such a price in the market.”

“Our thinking is informed by what we have experienced in parts of our lives and what we think is best practice,” the Minister said, urging lawmakers and other interested Nigerians to engage with the portal for answers to all relevant questions, including the quality, size, and appearance of the house in any location across the country. We believe we are in the digital age, and we should start doing things that are in line with it, rather than printing and selling forms.”

In response to a question about possible system manipulation, he stated, “We should not be creating unnecessary bureaucracies that will result in unnecessary human interactions and possibly some of the manipulations you refer to,” adding, “that does not mean that any system cannot be manipulated, but we believe that this is consistent with the goal of government.”

“We now live in a country where we can buy plane tickets using our mobile phones.” Our handheld devices are used to book hotels. “I don’t see why we can’t buy and sell houses with our handheld devices,” the Minister said, adding, “I did it as Governor of Lagos, and I thought we should try it at the national level.” He stated, “We believe that is where we should be going.”

Noting that the portal had only been open for a week, Fashola urged, “Let us give it time to evolve, and I think that 7,315 applications from Nigerians in this time is a very enthusiastic response,” adding that everyone who applied had paid N10,000 through the Remita platform.

“Contrary to popular belief, because conditions are difficult, that form that you would have sold in printed form is being sold digitally, and government is collecting the money for administrative purposes,” the Minister said, adding that while it is open to all Nigerians, some of the conditions that address facelessness include having a passport photograph and a tax clearance certificate, as well as other forms of identification such as a national ID, driver’s license, or Inland Revenue Certificate.

“Affordability is not just a function of the cost but also the mode of payment,” he said, adding that in order to address that issue, the Ministry created mortgage and Rent-to-Own options so that payments could be spread out over time.

Fashola, when asked if the Ministry was duplicating the work of its agencies, the Federal Housing Authority (FHA) and the Federal Mortgage Bank of Nigeria (FMBN), said that the Ministry was only conducting a pilot project from which the agencies would continue to roll out in the future.

Senator Sam Egwu, the Chairman of the Committee and former Governor of Ebonyi State, said in his closing remarks that the Minister had answered all of the questions to the best of his ability and thanked him for his diligence and commitment to housing delivery.

“I think you’ll agree with me that the Minister has done a good job of answering the questions we’ve asked him. We’re also impressed that the information you provided indicated that you’d already begun. You’ve made a strong start. As a result, we’ll continue to communicate with you… As I previously stated, we are pleased, and my members are pleased, which is why the Chairman of the House Committee is also present…”, said the Chairman of the Committee.

Mr. Babangida Hussaini, the Permanent Secretary, and Directors in the Ministry’s Housing Sector, Special Advisers, and other relevant Ministry officials were also present at the meeting.

77-year-old gun runner was apprehended in Delta

Michael Enipozi, a 77-year-old man, was arrested by Delta State Police command operatives for alleged gun running.
The suspect, a resident of the state’s Isoko South local government area, was apprehended over the weekend for allegedly selling forged firearms to criminals in the state.

Enipozi, who was apprehended after some suspected armed robbers were apprehended, was said to have been in the gun manufacturing business for 25 years.
The arrest of the old man was confirmed by Delta State Police Command Public Relations Officer (PPRO) Edafe Bright, a Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP).

Giving an account of how the suspect was apprehended, he said that at around 5 a.m., police operatives received a distress call about armed robbery activities in a premises along the Ozoro-Ughelli road and rushed to the scene.

“During questioning, the suspect admitted that he threw his gun away in the bush while fleeing and that he purchased the gun for #30,000 from One Michael Enipozi. The suspect led the cops to Isoko, where Michael Enipozi’m’ was apprehended.

“He was found with three double barrel guns, two single barrel guns, and other gun-making tools.” According to the preliminary investigation, the 77-year-old suspect is a welder who manufactures guns for criminals. “He admitted that he sold the gun to the suspect and that he has been in the business of manufacturing guns for the past twenty years,” Edafe stated.

Gunmen attack Lagos Education College, kill lecturer and student

Gunmen allegedly raided the Michael Otedola College of Primary Health Education (MOCPED) in Lagos State’s Epe Local Government Area, killing a lecturer and a student.

Ahmed Saheed is the lecturer, and Razak Bakare is the student.

Bakare was allegedly assassinated on campus, while the lecturer was assassinated in Poka Town.

According to a police source, the incident was unfortunate and occurred within the last 48 hours.

According to reports, there is now fear and anxiety in the Epe area as gunmen have arrived in Lagos.

President Muhammadu Buhari has expressed condolences to the families of Rev Obiora Ezekiel, the Founder and General Overseer of Christian Pentecostal Mission International, and Senator Gbenga Aluko, an Ekiti State politician, who died recently.

Nigerians have been complaining about the Nigeria Customs Service’s increased inspection of vehicles traveling the highways, claiming that the exercise is being used as an avenue for extortion by some customs officers.

We understand that the customs service is required by law to conduct vehicle inspections anywhere in the country, including at ports of entry and beyond. However, we are concerned about reports of extortion by servicemen, as well as the untold inconvenience and hardship that motorists face on the highways.

Vehicle inspection on highways by customs had long been a routine practice to combat the threat of vehicle smuggling in the country, but it was suspended when the federal government closed the land borders and the COVID-19 pandemic was at its peak. With the reopening of land borders and the easing of the pandemic, inspections to check the papers of vehicles traveling the highways have been reinstated. In a recent report, a cross-section of motorists said they were frequently intimidated and harassed by customs officers who hide behind the guise of checking smuggling and vehicle duty to commit illegalities.

Nigerians interviewed for the report described paying as much as N150,000 to customs officers patrolling the highways without receiving a receipt or proof of payment after being accused of possessing forged documents. According to the report, a number of locations have become notorious for such operations, including the always-bustling Naval Base area of the Abuja-Lokoja highway in Kogi State, the Ibilor area in Edo State, and the Okene-Edo-Ekiti route, which connects the north and south. Another black spot identified by motorists is the Jos-Abuja highway, particularly around the Riyom-Kuru and Forest axes.

We note that customs has made significant improvements in the documentation process for new vehicles, as well as simplified payment procedures. While we applaud these efforts, we must also acknowledge that there is still much work to be done. The illegal importation of vehicles into the country, which still occurs, cannot take place without customs officials’ knowledge and possibly connivance.

Extortion is a problem that motorists complain about, and it tarnishes the image of the customs. Many people have left with the impression that the exercise is more about extorting money from motorists than it is about customs doing the job that the laws and Nigerians expect them to do. The customs authorities must correct this as soon as possible. The majority of motorists lament the fact that the fake documents they are accused of possessing were actually issued by customs officials. As a result, the customs service will need to tighten its operations to ensure that all documents issued are genuine. It should also implement a deep cleaning of procedures and reorientation of its men. It needs to improve its land border manning system to prevent not only the illegal importation of vehicles but also the illegal importation of all other contraband items.

Furthermore, when dealing with Nigerian citizens, the Nigeria Customs Service, like all other military and paramilitary institutions in the country, retains the authoritarian mentality and unfriendly attitudes of our military past. This must be discarded. The NCS is a revenue-generating entity as well as a law enforcement agency. Nigerians are the source of those funds.

As a result, a cultural reorientation exercise is required to make customs officers more professional in their duties and to discourage acts that deviate from the service’s core mandate. They should also be expected to be courteous while remaining firm in their operations on the highways, keeping in mind that the NCS is primarily a service-oriented government agency. If it’s worth repeating, this is why it’s called the Nigeria Customs Service.

Furthermore, the service should educate Nigerians on how to spot forged vehicle documents. Fake vehicle documents will be less common as a result of this. Nigerians who use customs services in various ways, on the other hand, must do their part to ensure that the process is smooth and free of fraud. Citizens must always cooperate fully with the service’s officials and do so in a respectful manner. Those who have been wronged should not be afraid to file a complaint with the appropriate authorities. Everything possible should be done to ensure that customs operatives provide effective service.
