Transportation Investment Is Crucial To The AfCFTA’s Goals – Prime Minister

0

Mr Rotimi Amaechi, Nigeria’s Minister of Transportation, says that investing in transportation infrastructure is critical to achieving the African Continental Free Trade Area’s major goals (AfCFTA).

Mr Amaechi made the remarks at the National Institute of Transport Technology’s (NITT) International Conference on the Role of Transportation in the Implementation of the AfCFTA in Abuja, Nigeria’s capital.

According to him, transportation is critical for economic and social development because it connects production centers and markets.

“Transport facilitates the flow of goods and people along corridors, connecting different points of activity and promoting regional and national integration and development,” says the report.

The sector, according to the Minister, is critical in implementing trade facilitation, enhancing regional integration, and supporting every other AfCFTA Protocol.

Mr Amaechi said the government was investing heavily in transportation infrastructure across the country, reiterating President Muhammadu Buhari’s administration’s commitment to providing an efficient transportation system in the country.

He did say, however, that the most difficult aspect of African infrastructure development was maintaining infrastructure for long-term service delivery.

“The transportation sector is endowed with a plethora of potentials and development opportunities.

“In its efforts to transform the sector for the benefit of Nigerian citizens, the current administration will not leave any stone unturned.”

“I am optimistic that my sister, Distinguished Sen. Gbemisola Saraki, champion of the AfCFTA Transportation Infrastructure and Services Readiness Workstream, will mobilize all the human and material resources required to implement all the identified initiatives/action steps to ensure Nigeria taps into the AfCFTA opportunities,” Amaechi added.

Gbemisola Saraki, Minister of State for Transportation, reaffirmed the government’s efforts to ensure efficient transportation while speaking on the Readiness of Nigeria’s Transport and Logistics Sector for the Implementation of the AfCFTA.

Saraki stated that there was still much work to be done in the sector and expressed hope that the discussions at the conference would help to chart workable strategies for the AfCFTA.

“We hope that the outcome of this Conference will provide a better perspective on what more we can do as a sector to tap into the potentials of AfCFTA implementation.”

“I applaud NITT’s leadership for launching programs with themes that are relevant and needed in these times,” she said.

Olorogun John, the NITT Council Chairperman, also emphasized the importance of trade and transportation connectivity.

Transportation, according to NITT Director-General Dr Bayero Salih-Farah, is the gateway to economic growth and prosperity, and every other sector relies on it for growth and progress.

“As a result, it is heartening that the current administration, led by President Muhammadu Buhari, recognizes the critical role of transportation and is working tirelessly to make Nigeria’s transportation system one of the best in Africa.”

“Traffic infrastructure is widely regarded as a key enabler of national, regional, and international integration and trade.

“Competitiveness, market access, and economic growth are all aided by a well-functioning transportation system.” It’s past time for Nigeria to start reaping the benefits of being Africa’s largest economy.

“It is claimed that intra-African trade is around 15%, a dismal figure attributed to unnecessary bottlenecks and a lack of infrastructure.

“As a result, massive investments in connectivity and transportation infrastructure are urgently needed, as transportation is the link between all the factors of production.”

“I assure you that the Institute is always ready to carry out its mandate as the industry’s think tank by proposing issues that will address the industry’s problems.”

“Finally, I’d like to encourage every participant to feel free to contribute meaningfully to discussions about the conference theme, with the goal of improving recommendations and resolutions,” Salih-Farah said.

Mr Francis Anatogu, National Action Committee Secretary, AfCFTA, who was represented by Mrs Benita Gyang, also stated that efficient transportation and logistics were critical to the implementation of AfCFTA.

“Without transportation, the AfCFTA’s goals of creating a single market for goods and services will not be realized. Transportation is a facilitator. It is critical to the implementation of the AfCFTA.”

Former President Goodluck Jonathan has urged Nigerian leaders to value the interests of all citizens in order to create a united nation free of agitation, disunity, and dissatisfaction.

On Saturday, Jonathan led members of the University of Port Harcourt alumni Association to the king of Opume kingdom in Bayelsa’s Ogbia Local Government Area, King Amalate Turner.

The country, according to the former president, is endowed with both human and natural endowments that can only be appreciated in a peaceful environment.

He urged leaders to put more emphasis on creating a united nation in which no one society or tribe is valued more than the others.

“If leaders derail, there will be disunity and disenchantment among those who feel they are not being treated with the respect and value they deserve,” he said.

Jonathan, an alumnus and member of the University of Port Harcourt’s pioneer graduate class of 1981, explained that the reunion is part of the alumni’s activities aimed at fostering bonds among old classmates.

He added that it also serves as a forum for them to discuss issues affecting their alma mater and to give back to the school and society at large.

Nigerians react to federal govt intention to eliminate fuel subsidy

Nigerians in Osun State have begun to respond to the Federal Government of Nigeria’s announcement last week that petroleum products would no longer be subsidised.

Last week, the Muhammadu Buhari-led Federal Government announced that the subsidy would be phased off, promising to replace it with a monthly payment of N5,000 in transit allowance to 40 million poor Nigerians.

Subsidies will be phased off starting in 2022, according to the federal government.

Afolabi Isaac, a social analyst, said the timing of the subsidy reduction was incorrect, and that granting impoverished Nigerians N5,000 in these difficult times was an attempt to buy their silence.

If the federal government went ahead and implemented it, civil society organizations would reject it, prompting a call for civil disobedience, according to Afolabi.

He claimed that the situation was not dire and that the government was unconcerned about the misery of Nigerians who elected them.

Another resident, Falade Emmanuel, noted that as a civil servant, the impact on his pay is what concerns him the most.

Falade expressed concern that Nigerians who do not care about the country might take advantage of the gesture, resulting in a slew of overnight millionaires.

He urged the government to keep the people informed and turn the donation into a social program, adding that it should be managed by a trustworthy individual.

He voiced concern that the transportation money could be used to reward political appointees’ friends and cronies.

Hephzibah Olanipekun, a dealer, stated that the federal government’s decision will have an impact on her business.

She explained that because her company requires her to go to locations where she buys products and resells them in Osogbo, her transportation costs will rise.

She added that if the cost of transportation rises, the cost of goods and services may rise as well.

While she acknowledged that the monthly transportation allowance may make a difference, she emphasized that residents like her should be able to take advantage of it without difficulty.

The Nigerian Senate, Trade Union Congress (TUC), and Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC) have all expressed opposition to the subsidy elimination, with both the TUC and the NLC threatening to sue the federal government.

While the Senate stated that such a gift was not included in the budget for 2022, the TUC expressed surprise that the government could come up with such a concept while negotiations on subsidy reduction between the government and the Labour movement were still ongoing.

The development, according to the Nigerian Labour Congress, is an open invitation for unrest and revolution.

Northern Elders explain why Buhari should not release Nnamdi Kanu

President Muhammadu Buhari has been advised by the Northern Elders Forum (NEF) not to release Nnamdi Kanu from detention.

Recall that Buhari promised to consider a lighter resolution after meeting with Southeast elders, but was concerned that doing so would violate the principles of separation of powers between the Executive and the Judiciary.

In a statement signed by Dr. Hakeem Baba-Ahmed, the forum’s Director of Publicity, the forum stated that there are no safe grounds for President Buhari to grant the request.

“The release of Nnamdi Kanu will cause serious harm to Nigeria, which is already beset by security and other challenges,” the statement said.

Buhari was advised by Northern elders to follow the legal process and let Kanu’s trial run its course.

“We have carefully studied the request of Igbo Elders for President Muhammadu Buhari to terminate Nnamdi Kanu’s trial and release him unconditionally,” the statement said. It also took note of President Buhari’s response, which raised a number of serious concerns about the request as well as his commitment to consider it.

“The Forum notes that there are no safe, constructive, or informed grounds for granting the request, and advises that delaying President Buhari’s announcement of the only responsible response, which is that the judicial process in the case of Kanu must be allowed to run its course, will do serious harm to a country already threatened by multiple threats to its security and territorial integrity.”

Senator Orji Uzor Kalu, a former governor of Abia State and current Senate Chief Whip, paid a visit to Nnamdi Kanu, the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, who is being held by the Department of State Services, on Monday.

Kalu, in a Facebook post, stated that he had a conversation with the IPOB leader, whom he met in good health and care.

Whether Kanu listens or not, the Senator said he will continue to counsel him as he has in the past.

“This afternoon, I paid a visit to my brother, Maazi Nnamdi Kanu, who is detained by the DSS in Abuja,” he wrote. I met him in good health and took care of him, and we talked as ‘Umunne.’

“When I was Governor in 2001, I appointed his father, Eze Israel Okwu Kanu, as traditional ruler of Akwara Ukwu, and the family has remained close to me ever since.”

Due to alleged extortion, JAMB has taken over the collection of registration fees from CBT centers

0

From 2022, JAMB will collect the N700 registration fee for the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination, also known as the UTME.

In a weekly bulletin issued in Abuja on Monday, it stated that it would collect the approved N700 registration fee at the point of registration and remit it to the various approved centers.

“From the 2022 UTME exercise onwards, JAMB will collect the approved N700 registration fee on behalf of the various Computer-Based Test, CBT, centers in addition to its UTME registration fees.”

“The board will then remit whatever is owed to each registration center to its bank account on a weekly basis or at any time the center owners deem appropriate.”

“This commendable step was inspired by a thorough examination of the entire UTME registration process, which revealed some unethical and unacceptable practices by many CBT centers.”

“It should be noted that these centers were only permitted to collect N700 as registration fees, but some unscrupulous center owners took advantage of the opportunity to engage in conduct unbecoming of respectable establishments.”

“During the exercise, they engage in massive extortion of candidates,” the board stated.

It also stated that it was forced to make the UTME registration process cashless in order to prevent extortion.

It went on to say that the new procedure would not raise the cost of UTME registration in any way.

“Only the method of payment has changed; the price has not.”

“Under the new policy, candidates can register without paying a fee at any registration center.”

“The fee previously due to the center would have been paid in conjunction with the cost of obtaining the e-PINS,” it stated.

Meanwhile, the board announced that it had decided to create the “A/Level Task Team” and the “A/Level Qualification and Verification Databank” (ALQVD).

It was explained that the initiatives would act as monitoring bodies and repositories for verified A/Level qualifications, respectively.

It stated that the measure, along with others already in place, was taken to ensure that the gains made in the education sector were not eroded.

“This comes as a result of revelations made during a recent professional operation conducted by the ICPC in collaboration with the Federal Ministry of Education.

“These revelations come from a recent ICPC statement about irregularities at the Joint Universities Preliminary Examinations Board” (JUPEB).

“The faking of the Interim Joint Matriculation Board (IJMB) examination results has raised concerns among major stakeholders.

“As a result, the board, as the moderator of the two examinations, must take appropriate action to put an end to the unacceptable events.”

“Only six genuine results were found when one tertiary institution had cause to verify the IJMBE results of more than 146 candidates admitted with IJMB certificates,” JAMB lamented.

It also stated that, beginning with the 2022 UTME, it had added Computer Studies and Physical Health Education to the existing 23 UTME subjects, bringing the total number of UTME subjects to 25.

Breaking: Fayemi believes that the media should hold the government accountable for misusing power

On Monday, Ekiti State Governor Kayode Fayemi urged Nigerian journalists to hold the government accountable for any abuse of power.

Fayemi made the announcement during the 60th convocation lecture of the Nigerian Institute of Journalism (NIJ), which was titled “Media, Security, and Nation Building.”

The governor believes that the media can aid in the development of the country by holding every government official accountable for any abuse of power.
“The media should hold the government accountable for power abuse,” Fayemi said.

While speaking about the history of the Nigerian press, he also stated that democracy would not have been possible without the media.
