Mr. Babajide Sanwo-Olu, the Governor of Lagos State, reiterated his administration’s commitment to completely eradicate rape and other forms of Sexual and Gender-Based Violence (SGBV), saying that various initiatives, including institutional strengthening, have been put in place to combat the menace in the state.

During the second community sensitization programme for Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs) and Political Groups organized by the Office of the First Lady of Lagos State, Dr. Ibijoke Sanwo-Olu, Sanwo-Olu spoke at Lagos House, Alausa, Ikeja.

The Governor, who was represented by Mr. Moruf Akinderu-Fatai, the Commissioner for Housing, stated that significant progress has been made in the fight against Domestic and Sexual Violence in the last two years.

“Institutions have been strengthened to respond appropriately, policies have been formulated and implemented to ensure that survivors receive holistic care and support, and we are gradually ending the culture of impunity, as evidenced by the Ministry of Justice’s convictions.” To put it another way, we are talking the talk and walking the walk.

“With the enactment of a law that now supports the Sex Offenders Register, the Lagos State Domestic and Sexual Violence Response Team (DSVRT) has now transformed into the Lagos State Domestic and Sexual Violence Agency.”

“It’s encouraging that the agency has taken advantage of technology by launching the Gender-Based Violence Virtual and Referral System, which provides 24/7 access to GBV services.” This allows survivors to reach out to trained GBV service providers 24 hours a day, 7 days a week via a toll-free hotline (0 8000 333 333).

“In light of the public health implications of sexual violence’s aftermath, the Lagos State Government has recently launched an Intervention Fund under the Lagos State Health Insurance Scheme, which now ensures survivors of sexual violence have free access to immediate medical attention at all Primary Health Centers, General Hospitals, and designated private hospitals,” the Governor said.

Earlier, the First Lady, who was represented by Mrs. Oluremi Hamzat, the Wife of the Deputy Governor, said the program was aimed at discussing issues related to citizen welfare and well-being, particularly SGBV.

She said Lagos was ecstatic to join the rest of the world in commemorating the United Nations’ declaration of 16 days of activism against SGBV this year, with the theme “Orange the World: End Violence Against Women Now!”

In response to the recent defilement of a 10-year-old girl in Lagos by a 34-year-old married man said to be her father’s friend, the First Lady stated that every effort must be made to prosecute the perpetrator in accordance with the law.

“We have zero tolerance for rape, defilement, and related crimes in Lagos State.” To combat the threat in our state, we have worked diligently through a multi-sectoral stakeholders Initiative coordinated by my office.

“It’s gratifying that we’ve been able to achieve some historic achievements as a result of these efforts.” The establishment of the Lagos State Domestic and Sexual Violence Agency and the Sex Offenders Register, which will provide a quantum leap in terms of the legal framework to significantly and frontally tackle the menace of domestic and sexual violence, name and shame perpetrators, and most importantly, the declaration of Surulere, Bariga, and Alimosho as rape free zones, the presentation of three utility vehicles to critical agencies to support the fight against the menace, the declaration of Surulere, Bariga, and Alimosho

Participants were given lectures on the following topics as part of the program: Victims of sexual and gender-based violence receive training and empowerment. Boy Child Advocacy: The Importance of Correcting Gender Preference Imbalances for a Safe Society; Sexual as well as

Awareness, Prevention, Diagnosis, and Treatment of Tuberculosis; and Gender-Based Violence: Insight, New Law, and Response Protocol.

Participants received free medical services, as well as enlightenment talks from the Lagos State Waste Management Authority (LAWMA), Lagos State Health Management Agency (LASHMA), Lagos State Residents Registration Agency (LASRRA), and Mercy International Medical Mission and the Stop TB Partnership.

According to the Federal Government, Nigeria’s population projections are frightening, necessitating the immediate implementation of control measures to keep the country’s population increase under control.

This was said by Mr Boss Mustapha, the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), during a book launch on Monday in Abuja.

“A Sociology for Medical Practice,” written by Dr. Manassah Jatau, a retired Deputy Comptroller-General of the Nigeria Customs Service, is the title of the book.

“In one or two decades, Nigeria would overtake China and India as the world’s third most populated country,” Mustapha said.

“It is critical that we begin to plan for this rise as soon as possible.”

“Right now, we’re dealing with the youth population, and we haven’t been able to address some of the country’s problems.”

The SGF praised the author for his thorough understanding of leadership challenges in deciding the efficacy and efficiency of companies, particularly in terms of physical and financial prosperity, as reflected in the book.

Mustapha also underlined the importance of developing Nigeria’s traditional medicine, claiming that doing so would create jobs, improve the country’s pharmaceutical products, and boost the economy.

“There is also a need for traditional medicine to be introduced.” It will minimize the number of Nigerians who travel to foreign nations for medical care, according to the SGF.

Mr Adewale Adeniyi, Assistant Comptroller-General, Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), praised Jatau for a job well done earlier in his welcome message, emphasizing the importance of health and environmental issues.

The departed Customs head, according to Adeniyi, left everlasting footprints in the service of the NCS that are worthy of emulation, and the author has successfully married sociology and medicine.

Prof. Ibrahim Njodi, former Vice-Chancellor of the University of Maiduguri, who evaluated the book, stated it has both medical and sociological information.

“Man is a social being, and his health is influenced by multiple social variables, and the causes of most diseases lie deep in the social factors,” Jatau said in his remarks.

He explained that the book would aid in the recognition of diseases and illnesses, as well as the prevention of their occurrence, because it stresses healthy living circumstances in the human population and eliminates health threats.

As a result, Jatau urged the government, academics, medical practitioners, and the general public to examine the book critically and utilize it as a starting point for their conversations and research.

The Nigerian government has stated that the vaccination deadline for civil personnel across the Federation will not be extended.

This was said by Dr Shu’aib Faisal, Executive Director of the National Primary Health-care Development Agency, NPHCDA, at a national media briefing in Abuja, Nigeria.

Before being admitted into their offices, he stated, all Federal Civil servants would be required to provide proof of having vaccinated against COVID-19, or a negative PCR test obtained within 72 hours, beginning December 1, 2021.

“To make COVID-19 vaccines more accessible to government personnel, we’ve started office-to-office immunization in Federal Ministries, Departments, and Agencies” (MDAs). This will eliminate the excuse of needing to leave their place of business to go to a faraway immunization site.

“We would also want to highlight that civil officials will be randomly selected from time to time to check or assess their COVID-19 antibody title in order to discover those who may have illegally obtained vaccination cards without vaccination.” Anyone who is found to have illegally gotten a vaccination card without having been vaccinated will be turned over to the authorities. COVID-19: Employees of the federal government must be vaccinated before December 1st.

According to Dr. Shu’aib, the NPHCDA will undertake a widespread vaccination campaign in refugee and internally displaced persons (IDP) camps around the country in partnership with the National Commission for Refugees, Migrants, and Internally Displaced Persons.

“This is to ensure that all refugees and internally displaced persons, as well as their families, are adequately safeguarded, and that the camps are livable.” This is the kind of cooperation we hope to see from other MDAs. As a result, we strongly encourage all MDAs to collaborate with us in order to expedite the immunization of their people. This is especially important now that the Omicron variation of COVID-19 has emerged, which is a more virulent strain of COVID-19 that is likely to cause more severe sickness.

“The coronavirus has a chance to change after every COVID-19 infection.” Vaccination thus aids in the prevention of variations. We’d also like to dispel the idea that if you’ve had COVID-19 sickness and recovered, you’re immune and don’t need to get vaccinated.
