Fred Gives Rangnick Winning Start at Man Utd

0

Fred’s 77th-minute winner gave Manchester United a winning start under interim manager Ralf Rangnick.

A more active United performance appeared to go unrewarded against a tenacious Crystal Palace side until Fred scored first-time from Mason Greenwood’s lay-off, looping a magnificent 20-yard strike over Vicente Guaita and into the top corner.

It was only Fred’s second goal of the season, and United’s first back-to-back league victories since the middle of September.

Rangnick’s side generated multiple decent chances before the Brazilian’s effort, but they never looked like they were going to score, and Guaita would have stopped an Alex Telles free-kick that skimmed the bar if it had been on target.

Indeed, Palace came close to winning at Old Trafford for the third season in a row when Jordan Ayew turned James Tomkins’ header across the face of goal and narrowly wide of the far post.

Rangnick followed in the footsteps of three of United’s previous four new managers since Sir Alex Ferguson’s retirement in 2013 by winning his first match in charge, with Louis van Gaal the lone exception.

During Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s stint as manager, which ended last month, Fred was a frequent target of criticism.

The midfielder is a mainstay of a Brazil squad that dominated World Cup qualification in South America, as Michael Carrick pointed out during his three-match stint as United’s interim manager.

Despite this, he has never demonstrated that he is worth the £47 million United spent for him, either through goals or chances created.

Death Snuffs Dowen Teen’s Flying Dream, Sylvester Oromoni’s Quest for Justice

0

As the death of Sylvester Oromoni, a 12-year-old student at Dowen College in Lekki, Lagos, continues to ripple and spark dialogues about bullying, his devastated family and indeed Nigerians have begun on a journey for justice, according to Chiemelie Ezeobi and Sunday Ehigiator.

They say that your aspirations are valid, but for 12-year-old Sylvester Oromoni, his never came true, despite his parents’ best attempts to send him to a prominent school in Lagos to pave the route for him to achieve such lofty goals. He only wanted to be a pilot! That was all there was to it!

He desired to soar through the air like a bird, communicating with the winds as they guided his wings to fly. Until his life was cut short in a horrible manner, his dreams were very accurate.

Sylvester was a Dowen College student in Lekki, Lagos. He was transferred to the school without hesitation from their base in Warri, Delta State, because his four other siblings had attended, including his direct elder sister, who is still a student there. No one could have predicted that his would be different. He passed away!

He was slashed in his prime.

Sylvester’s ambition of becoming a pilot came to a halt on December 1, 2021, when he passed away after days of excruciating pain and agony.

Mr. Sylvester Oromoni Snr., the bereaved father, claimed the school contacted on November 21 to inform them that their kid was hurt and was in the school clinic. They sent a family friend to pick him up and take him to the hospital because they were all in Warri.

They weren’t really concerned prior to the guardian’s arrival at the school because they all assumed it was a small matter. However, when the man arrived, he told them that the nature of the injury made him suspect that the injuries were caused by football, as the school said.

Sylvester couldn’t stand because his waist, along with one side of his belly, was bowed and swelled, and his lips was black. To establish the situation, the family’s eldest son, who had flown in from London to Warri, went to Lagos and raised an alarm when he saw his younger brother.

Treatment began almost away, and it was on one of these days that Sylvester, who could only get one hour of sleep while medicated, confessed that he had not played ball or tripped, but rather had been assaulted by five boys who barged into his room, turned off the lights, and assaulted him.

They allegedly thrashed him and repeatedly stepped on his ribs. They also threatened to kill him, as well as any of the junior kids, if they told anyone about what had transpired. They were the ones who told him he had to say he was hurt while playing football, a claim they thought would fly given his passion for the sport.

He died before he could return to Warri to facilitate his transfer to the teaching hospital, according to the heartbroken father. The days leading up to his death, however, were plagued with sorrow and pain for the little youngster who liked playing soccer and PS5 games.

They took him to the hospital for blood tests and an X-ray, as well as typhoid and malaria treatments, but his lips began to peel, and he had liver enlargement owing to congealed blood, according to the heartbroken father.

Culprits

While the grief was still fresh, Sylvester’s cousin, Perrison Oromoni, took to social media to name some of the school’s students who he claimed were responsible for the harassment and subsequent death of Sylvester.

According to the relative, the deceased mentioned the names of five boys, four of whom are in senior secondary school two (SSS2) and one of whom is in senior secondary school one (SSS1) (names withheld).

The deceased’s family also claimed that he was beaten and brutalised because he refused to join their sect. For declining to join the group, the perpetrators allegedly fed him a liquid substance described as “chemical.”

According to his family, he suffered inside injuries as a result of the pupils’ beatings, as evidenced by a battery of examinations and X-rays.

The Case Is Taken to Social Media by a Family

The case would not have gone public if it hadn’t been for Perrison. Perrison had described how his late relative was allegedly abused in school on November 21 and was picked up by a guardian on November 27 before dying days later.

Despite his tough exterior, the father of the deceased, whom he named after himself, was grieved, not only by his son’s loss, but also by the brutal manner in which he died.

He lamented that the school should have been more worried about pursuing the lads mentioned as the assailants prior to their deaths, but instead chose to make a press release concerning football-related injuries. He challenged the school to identify people who reportedly played football with the deceased, but the institution has yet to accept the challenge.

Suspension in the Past

The suspects listed were also reported to the school last term when they bullied the deceased and collected all of his food and clothes, according to one of the interviews when the father talked.

They also told him to describe his sister’s privates, and he was tormented when he refused.

According to the bereaved father, his hostel was transferred after the bullying event was reported to the school, but the bullying continued. He stated that they considered moving schools for him but decided against it because his older sister was still a student there.

The School’s Reaction

The school published a statement in response to the claims, which was signed by the school principal, Adebisi Layiwola. “On the 21st day of November 2021, one of the hostel parents reported to the management that the young child was hurt while playing football,” the statement reads in part. When giving him first aid, the resident registered nurse let him to return to his hostel room after he indicated relief.

“On Monday, November 22nd, 2021, he was in class, but one of his friends accompanied him to the Sick Bay during school hours, where he complained of hip pain. After the doctor examined him and prescribed Ibuprofen for the discomfort, the nurse massaged his leg, and he felt a little better.”

According to the statement, “the resident doctor called the deceased’s mother reporting the incident and asked that she come for him so that he could seek further medical assistance,” as per the school’s policy.

“However, the mother said she was not in Lagos when she chatted and prayed with him on the phone, promising to send the guardian to pick him up right away for further medical attention.”

“When the guardian failed to come up the next day, on November 23, 2021, the doctor called the mother again, who told him that his guardian would pick him up from school.

“The guardian later arrived and brought the deceased for an X-ray, which indicated that no portion of the boy’s body was fractured or harmed,” according to the report.

“Later in the week, the resident doctor called the mother to check on his progress, but she informed the doctor that he was sleeping at the time.” The principal also called his mother to inquire on his progress, and she informed him that he was getting a massage and gave him the phone to speak with the principal.

“It was thus with a sharp shock that it got word of the student’s death and the claims that accompanied it.”

Evidence of Mistake is Disseminated by the Family

The grieving family, enraged by the press release and the continued attribution of football as the cause of injury and death, released more visual proof to support their accusations.

Perrison, who is still active on Twitter, uploaded the final videos of Sylvester before his death, which showed him in extreme distress. He had sores all over his mouth, in addition to the pain and agony he was experiencing.

The dead could scarcely sit or lie down in the video. As he writhed in anguish, he continued to weep. “He couldn’t lift a leg or an arm,” Perrison wrote. He constantly expressing his dissatisfaction with his throat and stomach. He claimed to have been offered something to drink. Please pray for us. Will a youngster in this condition tell the truth about what has happened to him? Dowen College should inform us of my cousin’s fate.”

Protest that was supposed to happen but didn’t happen

When the video went viral, the simmering rage erupted into rage, with several Nigerians planning to storm the school the next morning. The bereaved family had requested peace after learning of the preparations.

The Ministry of Education pays a visit to the school.

Due to the uproar created by the case, officials from the Ministry of Education’s Office of Education Quality Assurance paid a visit to the school last Thursday and were shown around the facilities to aid their assessment.

The delegation included top-level officials from various government ministries, departments, and organisations, as well as the police.

LASG has decided to close the facility indefinitely.

The Lagos State government formally intervened, ordering the indefinite closure of Dowen College pending the result of the inquiry into the incident.

Mrs. Folasade Adefisayo, the Commissioner of Education, who announced the closure after a meeting with school administration and employees, called for calm and stated no effort would be spared in determining the cause of the incident.

Despite the closure, the school continues to offer classes online.

While accepting the physical closure of the school, the school simply shifted classes online, a decision that many have characterised as defiant. This was revealed in a letter written to parents by the school. The Lagos State government has yet to respond to the situation.

“We wish to tell you that, as a result of our discussion at the Ministry of Education, the school will be shutting down all physical activities until further notice,” said part of the email. In the sake of safety and transparency, all learning will be moved online.”

Countless Dissensions

There have been numerous controversies since the news surfaced. The accused boys’ families were claimed to have acquired entry to the school as early as 5 a.m. to transport them away. The devastated family also claimed that two of the five boys had been flown out of the country without being investigated.

Almost all of the school principal’s and staff’s social media accounts have been deleted, or the comment section has been disabled. Given the avalanche of curses scribbled on the pages, this was the case. The school’s Instagram comment area has also been disabled.

In a separate event, the mother of one of the accused boys warned the school not to involve her son in the case in a leaked memo.

The school’s press release was also deemed controversial due to the school’s claim that the deceased was injured on the football field and not as a result of a beating.

Nigerians are conducting an independent investigation.

Nigerians, it’s been joked on Twitter, would give the FBI a run for their money any day. Nigerians dug into the background facts of the accused males after the teen’s death, proving the joke true once more. They had uncovered information about the lads and their family in less than two days.

Questions Unanswered

Following the school’s press release and subsequent videos depicting Sylvester’s agonising condition before his death, a slew of unresolved concerns arose. Why weren’t similar allegations of bullying taken seriously? When the stated lads invaded the deceased’s area of the dormitory and repeatedly stamped on his lungs, where were the house masters? Why did no one believe that if he told the truth about his situation, the educational system would protect him? Why wasn’t there a security camera on the football field? What type of football would cause such an injury to a talented young player?

The Governor of Delta takes action.

Delta State Governor, Dr. Ifeanyi Okowa, reached out to the grieving family after receiving multiple calls for his intervention. “I spoke to Mr. Sylvester Oromoni, the father of late Sylvester Oromoni Jr., the Dowen College student who regrettably died under highly controversial and unexplained circumstances,” the governor said in a news release.

“During the call, I indicated my support for the Lagos State government’s decision to initiate an investigation into the murder of Sylvester, a native of Delta State’s Warri South LGA.

“As a government that prioritises the lives of our citizens both inside and outside the state, we are committed to seeing this case through to its conclusion.” To serve as a powerful deterrent against future occurrences, the problem must be investigated, the culprits captured, punished, and made an example of.

“As we keep a careful eye on this matter, we offer our prayers and support to the Oromoni family.” I pray that Almighty God gives them the strength they need during this difficult time as they mourn the loss of their young son, Amen.”

The Search for Justice

The hashtag JusticeForSylvester has been trending for days, and the clarion call for everybody is that he receives justice and that the perpetrators are brought to justice. Aside from the mourning family, the teen’s brutal death had elicited predictable reactions from all, with the majority demanding justice and prosecution of those responsible. From government agencies to civil society groups, celebrities, politicians, and even ordinary Nigerians all cried out for justice.

“We shall be failing in our obligations as parents/guardians, administrators, security agencies, and government if we do not get to the bottom of the matter of late Sylvester Oromoni,” Atiku Abubakar, a former presidential election candidate for the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), said. It is our responsibility to establish a safe environment in our classrooms.”

“Media claims that the Lagos State Government has shut down Dowen College permanently,” Mirabel Centre said in a statement on their Instagram page. That’s a good initial step, but it can’t be the only one. We must continue to demand justice for a child who still has his entire life ahead of him with the same fervour.”

Amnesty International, in a similar vein, wrote:

Sylvester Oromoni’s birthday would have been on December (…sic) 4, 2021. Authorities in Lagos State must look into the events that led to Sylvester’s death and ensure that no other youngster goes through what he did. Schools must be secure havens.”

Votes are cast in support of an online petition.

An online petition created on Change.org has already received 66, 678 signatures, falling just short of the 75,000 signatures needed to make it one of the most popular.

They asked questions like “did the school do enough to protect Sylvester; how were the injuries that led to his death sustained; and was the school negligent in protecting its students?” They were started by Irede Foundation and asked questions like “did the school do enough to protect Sylvester; how were the injuries that led to his death sustained; and was the school negligent in protecting its students?”

They charged the police to “act swiftly and examine the reasons and actions that led to his death,” despite the fact that there are so many questions and not enough answers. We’re requesting that the Lagos Commissioner of Education, Folashade Adefisayo, and authorities from the Lagos State Universal Education Board, as well as the Federal Ministry of Education, investigate claims of bullying and carelessness.

“We demand a full and transparent inquiry and prosecution of anybody found guilty in this unfortunate occurrence.” Social protection is very vital for children, and in light of this crime, we want to make sure that children with disabilities are included in the protection of children. For Sylvester, 12, and his family, justice must be served and shown to be done.”

Discussions on Boarding

The problems perpetrated in boarding homes were one item that this terrible tragedy dredged up.

There have been numerous reports of students being harassed, tormented, or even tortured by their classmates in the pretext of toughening them up in the boarding school tradition. There have also been reports of teachers abusing the youngsters under their care.

Sylvester’s death has reignited debates about failed school systems and boarding schools, as well as situations of children who are bullied on a daily basis but are unwilling to speak up.

Mirabel Centre, on the other hand, would rather not follow that path. “This conversation is not about boarding school versus day school and which is better or worse,” they claim. Reducing such a horrific event to a debate dilutes the gravity of the circumstance, which resulted in the death of a child.

“This is a case of abuse.” And the numerous ways in which our society and systems continue to fail Nigerian children. We encourage other abusers that they can commit crimes and get away with it when there is no accountability.”

Others, like Sylvester and Keren,

Another discussion sparked by Sylvester’s death was that of Keren-Happuch Aondodoo Akpagher, a 14-year-old student at Premier Academy in Lugbe, Abuja. In June of this year, published a piece about her passing. “Who Raped Keren, Leading to Her Death?” reads the headline.

She was allegedly raped in her school, which ultimately resulted in her death. Her mother’s name is

Mrs. Vivien Akpagher, who is still seeking justice months later, claims that her daughter was sexually abused and eventually died of problems as a result of a condom left in her private area.

Keren, according to her, fell into melancholy after returning home and died in the hospital a few days later. On June 22, 2021, she was picked up by her mother since she was ill. At the hospital, it was discovered that she had been raped and that a condom had been left in her vagina, causing an infection, sepsis, and trauma that led to her death.

The deceased had marked a part in her Bible before her death, “For what I have dreaded has come upon me, And what I have feared has befallen me. “I have had no peace, no calm, no rest, but trouble keeps coming,” according to the school’s management. This passage was taken from Job 3:25–26.

Her aspiration of becoming a nurse to care for the sick came to an end with her death, leaving her family heartbroken and society at large without someone who may have made a difference.

Birthday Wishes and a Promise Kept

“My son suffered,” the deceased’s father was quoted as saying in an online interview. His birthday is the following day (Dec 4). It’ll be a cause for celebration for me. I’m going to bake a cake. I’ll take care of it on his behalf.”

On December 4, he maintained his word—and so did the rest of the family. The family sang while cutting his birthday cake (a pilot’s cake with an aeroplane to boot) in between attempting to keep a stoic mein and honouring the memories of their peace-loving son.

The video that went viral broke a million hearts and made many people cry. It also sparked a flurry of emotions, which only grew stronger.

The Lagos Police Department has begun an investigation.

The Lagos State Police Command said it has begun an investigation despite the family’s failure to formally report to any division due to the public outrage that has not subsided.

The state Commissioner of Police, Hakeem Odumosu, was alleged to have ordered the Divisional Police Officer of the Maroko Division, under whose authority the incident occurred, to go to the school right once and conduct an initial investigation.

According to the state spokesman, Adekunle Ajisebutu, the DPO began an inquiry right away before the CP sent the case to the State Criminal Investigation Department’s (SCID) Homicide Section in Panti, Yaba, due to the seriousness of the case.

“Members of the public, particularly the deceased’s bereaved parents, friends, and relatives, are assured that the Lagos State Police Command has deployed all available human and material resources at its disposal to unravel the circumstances surrounding the sad and unfortunate incident,” the CP said in a statement made available.

“While a thorough inquiry is underway, the public is urged from taking matters into their own hands.” They’ve also been told not to say anything that could jeopardise the inquiry.”

While expressing condolences to the departed family, the CP also promised that the outcome of the police inquiry will be made public as soon as possible.

Police who shot, killed truck driver commence disciplinary action in Osun

The police officer who shot and killed a truck driver, Mallam Kabiru Babai, on Friday in Ota-efun area in Osogbo, Osun State, has been identified, arrested, and held by the Osun State Police Command.

According to a statement from State Command Spokesperson Yemisi Opalola, an investigation and disciplinary actions have begun, and the suspect will be charged in court after the Orderly Room Trial is completed, which will serve as a deterrence to other officers.

While Commissioner of Police, CP Olawale Olokode, extended his condolences to the victim’s family, coworkers, and friends, he promised that justice will be done.

The cop brutalised the deceased, a 33-year-old borehole drilling truck driver, before shooting him.

The deceased was said to have been the driver of a Shekeena Global borehole drilling truck that broke down on Friday morning near Ikirun road. When the police officers arrived, he was trying to fix it with his staff.

The police officers, who arrived in a Korope mini commercial bus, took the driver from under the vehicle and assaulted him before shooting him.

It was also discovered that the deceased had a pregnant wife and a young child.

The state governor, Adegboyega Oyetola, denounced the police officer’s shooting of the unarmed truck driver.

He demanded that the events leading up to the incident be investigated, and he demanded that the Commissioner of Police bring the alleged killer to justice.

On Saturday, his Press Secretary, Ismail Omipidan, issued a statement to that effect.

While praising the local youngsters for not taking the law into their own hands, Oyetola promised that the government will see to it that justice was served.

He expressed his condolences to the deceased’s family, employers, and friends, stressing that “we are dedicated to do all possible to protect citizens from actual and future threats” as a government.

SERAP wants court order to stop Buhari, others from shutting down telecommunications

The Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP) has filed a lawsuit seeking “a perpetual injunction to prevent President Muhammadu Buhari and Minister of Communication and Digital Economy, Isa Pantami, from unlawfully shutting down telecommunication networks in any part of the country.”

SERAP is asking the Federal High Court in Abuja to “determine whether the Buhari administration’s shutdown of telecommunication networks in any part of Nigeria is unlawful, and a violation of the rights of access to correspondence, freedom of expression, information, and the press,” according to the suit number FHC/ABJ/CS/1323/2021.

“Determine if the shutdown of telecommunication networks in any region of the country is inconsistent with the criteria of legality, proportionality, and necessity, as well as the rights of access to correspondence, freedom of speech, information, and the press,” SERAP also asks the court.

The case has been assigned to Honourable Justice Ahmed Mohammed of Court 4, and a hearing date has been set for January 11, 2022.

The Nigerian Communications Commission is a defendant in the case (NCC).

“Large-scale communication network shutdowns constitute a form of collective punishment,” according to SERAP. Shutdowns have a chilling impact on participatory democracy, which depends on an engaged and informed population capable of engaging with a variety of perspectives.”

“The Buhari government has constitutional and international legal obligations to provide Internet access for all, as Internet access is intrinsically related to the exercise of freedom of expression and information,” according to SERAP.

“Access to information, the ability to exercise the right to freedom of expression, and the involvement that the internet and telecommunication networks bring to all sectors of society are important for a truly democratic society,” according to SERAP.

“The rights to freedom of expression and information may be limited only in specified circumstances,” according to SERAP. Restrictions on these rights must be legal, proportionate, and required for the preservation of others’ rights or reputations, as well as national security, public order, public health, and morals.”

NCC’s Executive Vice-Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, Prof. Umar Danbatta

“While the authorities have a legal responsibility to safeguard, ensure, and secure the rights to life and property,” SERAP claims, “any such responsibility should be discharged in accordance with constitutional and international human rights norms.”

“The suspension of internet and telecommunication networks in Zamfara and Katsina states is especially heinous, and reveals a troubling trend, especially considering Nigeria’s rising repression and restriction of civic space,” SERAP warned. Shutdowns should never become commonplace in the United States.”

“Internet and telecommunication shutdowns constitute to intrinsically excessive interference with the rights to freedom of expression and information,” according to the claim filed on behalf of SERAP by its lawyers Kolawole Oluwadare and Kehinde Oyewumi. Shutdowns must be shown to be necessary in order to fulfill their declared purpose, which they frequently imperil.”

“Four special mandates on freedom of expression emphasized in their 2011 Joint Declaration on Freedom of Expression and the Internet that ‘cutting off access to the Internet, or parts of the Internet, for whole populations or segments of the public can never be justified, including on grounds of public order or national security.'”

“The African Commission on Human and Peoples’ Rights affirmed the principle of non-interference with internet and telecommunication networks, emphasizing that States, including Nigeria, “shall not engage in or condone any disruption of access to the internet and other digital technologies for segments of the public or an entire population.”

“The United Nations Human Rights Council condemned’measures to purposefully impede or impair access to or transmission of information online in breach of international human rights law’ in June 2016. The Council urged all countries, including Nigeria, to refrain from and stop taking such actions.”

“Section 39 of the Nigerian Constitution, 1999 [as amended], Article 19 of the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights, and Article 9 of the African Charter on Human and Peoples’ Rights, all of which Nigeria has ratified, protect the rights to freedom of expression and access to information.”

“These rights must be safeguarded online in the same way that they are safeguarded offline.” The freedom to use the Internet is a basic human right. Online and offline, access to the internet is also required for the exercise and enjoyment of other human rights.”

“Shutdowns have a wide range of negative consequences for human rights, economic activity, public safety, and emergency services, all of which outweigh the ostensible benefits.” Any internet or telecommunications shutdown has the potential to effect millions of people, with those on the outskirts of society being the hardest hit.”

“The unjustified suspension of internet and communications networks in Zamfara and Katsina states is incompatible with the standards of necessity and proportionality.” The suspension is a type of collective punishment meted out to Nigerians in certain states.”

“Any restrictions should be based on the goal of making the right easier to exercise, rather than imposing needless and unreasonable restrictions.” Restrictions must not be discriminatory, must not undermine the nature of the right, and must not be intended to cool the market. Shutdowns of the internet and telecommunications fail to meet all of these criteria.”

The NCC recently ordered telecom companies to stop all telecommunications networks in a number of states, including Zamfara State and at least 13 local government areas in Katsina State, ostensibly to combat “banditry” and terrorism.

NYSC is here to stay, FG tells critics

By Katurak Yashim

Abuja, Dec. 5, 2021 (NAN) The Minister of Youth and Sports Development, Mr Sunday Dare, says the National  Youth Service Corps (NYSC) is here to stay as its contributions to national development are indisputable.

Dare spoke in Abuja on Saturday night at the premiere of an advocacy movie produced by the NYSC entitled “A Call to Service”.

The movie was produced to increase appreciation for the scheme’s relevance in promoting patriotism, national unity, peace and cohesion.

Some of the movie cast included Nollywood actors such as Pete Edochie, Toyin Abraham, Ali Nuhu, Belinda Effah, Imeh Bishop also known as “Okon Lagos”, and comedian Anita Asuoha also referred to as “Real Warripikin”.

The minister applauded the timely release of the movie as the relevance of the scheme has been under public scrutiny and debate in recent time.

“The timing of this movie could not have been better after weeks and months of debates about whether the NYSC is relevant or not and whether the scheme should be scrapped or should continue.

“The answer to the critics, to the anti-NYSC is in the premiere of this movie. This movie needs to travel and hit every viewing platform across this country and in the diaspora; it must go viral.

“The message must go out strong and clear, that the NYSC has come to stay. The scheme is more relevant now than it has ever been before,” the minister said.

Dare said that the release of the movie would assist the ministry with its plans in ensuring that the NYSC Trust Fund is created.

According to him, I believe that before the end of the first quarter of next year when we have done all that is necessary, I will be able to present a memo to the (Federal Executive) Council for the establishment of an NYSC Trust Fund.

Gen. Yakubu Gowon, former Head of State and initiator of the NYSC, urged the legislative and executive arms of the Federal Government to take the necessary steps towards establishing the NYSC Trust Fund.

Gowon, who was represented by Mr Yusuf Nalado, Member, NYSC Governing Board, said that the gesture would ensure the sustenance of the scheme and the future of the Nigerian youth.

Gowon called on Nigerians to continue to support the scheme to sustain the achievements of its mandate.

Brig.-Gen. Shuaibu Ibrahim, the NYSC Director-General, said that the scheme produced the movie to drive the relevance of the scheme and also to provide a platform for corps members to develop their potential.

Ibrahim said that the movie also aimed to educate local and foreign-trained graduates that national service is mandatory and failure to comply will attract legal consequences.

“You are all aware that NYSC has for long become a household name in Nigeria owing to its invaluable contributions to national unity and development.

“In particular, its role in the training and mentoring of the youth in preparation for their future leadership responsibilities have been appreciated by all and sundry.

“The movie we are unveiling today is part of the innovative approaches of the present management to engendering a greater appreciation of the relevance of the scheme.

“It is an advocacy and sensitisation tool that is also expected to influence a greater commitment of stakeholders to their roles and responsibilities as spelt out in the NYSC Act Cap N84 Laws of the Federation of Nigeria 2004 and the NYSC Bye-Laws.

According to Ibrahim, the movie is also produced to encourage local and foreign-trained Nigerian graduates that are eligible for national service to make themselves available upon graduation.

He said that this would prevent the graduates from being found guilty of absenteeism, absconding, or certificate forgery.

The director-general said that the movie was produced under the schemes movie production platform “NYSCwood” which was established to sensitise the public on relevant issues.

“Some of the actors in the movie were serving corps members at the time of its production. Indeed, the film was produced by a corps member, JairusPaul Osazuwa.

“This is in line with our policy of providing opportunities for corps members to develop their potential. It is in this regard that we established the NYSC movie production platform, which we christened NYSCwood.

“Already, we have produced several short films aimed at sensitising the public on issues such as elections, safe blood donation, and campaign against open defecation.

“Apart from deploying our movies as instruments of entertainment and education, the NYSCwood will serve as a training platform for corps members who will be interested in pursuing a career as professional movie actors while also generating revenue for the scheme,” Ibrahim said.

He said that the scheme had also signed a partnership agreement with the Actors’ Guild of Nigeria (AGN) to further provide a platform for corps members to develop and expand their creativity. (NAN) (www.nannews.ng)

Nasarawa housewife explains how she fell pregnant for her husband’s 17-year-old son

Mrs Justina Agbumi sat with other pleasure seekers at the Lafia township stadium on Thursday, November 26 to observe the evening training of Nasarawa United football players.

But, while everyone else seemed to be having a good time watching professional footballers juggle the ball, Justina sat quietly and solemnly.

The cheerful mood of the nine-month-old infant on her bosom, who sucked away merrily on a bottle of soft drink, contrasted with her melancholy demeanor.

Justina has practically become a recluse since her husband’s tragic death and her heinous conduct with a young man her husband had with another woman out of wedlock.

She decided to put her fertility to the test with the young man who was living with them, not knowing that the young man in question is her husband’s biological son, because she had been childless for 19 years after she married Donald Agbumi and was anxious to find out whether she was actually infertile.

It was the conclusion of the couple’s deception, as Donald had brought the young man in and introduced him to Justina as one of his village relatives.

Our correspondent’s efforts to contact with Justina after one of her neighbors dropped a hint about the incident for a week finally paid off on Thursday at the Lafia township stadium, when she agreed to speak about it.

Justina explained how their once-enviable romance became tainted with impatience, hatred, and abuse, to the point where neighbors and friends became peacemakers before the marriage was annulled.

She described how the previous 15 years had been the worst of her life because they didn’t have a child, with assault, name calling, cruelty, and malnutrition.

“It got to the point where I wondered if I was still married to the same man.”

“He turned into a beast, calling me barren, harlot, and useless because I couldn’t take in,” she continued, tears streaming down her face.

“He was my best buddy before we got married,” she added. We were eager to start a family as soon as possible so that we could move on.

“But there was nothing after five years or more.” I felt concerned since I didn’t take in.

“We had various tests and were told that I was well, but that my husband had a low sperm count and that he needed to adjust his diet, which we did, but nothing changed.”

“Because he is the only son, his mother had already been antagonistic to me, coming from the village on a regular basis, while my husband joined her in irritating me.”

“Before that, I went to places where my faith wouldn’t normally allow me to go since all I wanted was a child.” Despite this, nothing came of it.

“That’s how I got my start living alone.” I sobbed every day, but it didn’t help me.

I had an idea one day and wanted to test my fertility with a different man. I realized that would be high-level adultery, but I reasoned that it would be a lesser sin if it was with a relative of my husband’s who was staying with us. Since my spouse had ceased making love to me for about seven months, I drew the young man closer and became him my best friend.

“It was tough to get Godwin to start sleeping with me, but I also had to consider my age.”

“I had never cheated on my spouse before, but I had reached the end of my patience and the odds were stacked against me.

“I came to the conclusion that Godwin would be the best way to test my fertility.”

“I had seen Godwin’s crotch while cleaning the house, and I realized that his manhood was large enough to satisfy me, despite the fact that he was only approximately 17 years old.”

“Whenever my husband went to work, I started admiring him.” I would summon bravery and approach him, luring him closer to me with insignificant stuff.

“He succumbed quickly, and we began having sex, albeit he wasn’t quite perfect because he hadn’t been into it before.”

“However, I was instructing him.” I also cautioned him not to tell anyone about it and promised to kill him if he did.

“We made strides in that regard, particularly during my ovulation phase.” He was able to impregnate me in a short period of time. Three months later, I didn’t get my period.

“I was overjoyed that the plan to test my fertility worked, and that Godwin was able to do in such a short period what my husband had been unable to do for years.”

“One good factor was that Godwin was completely unaware of his involvement.

“Unfortunately for me, I had no idea that Godwin was my husband’s biological son.” The whole family kept it hidden from me so that I wouldn’t blame him.”

Godwin had earned admission to the College of Education Akwanga and was on his way to begin registration when he was killed in an accident.

“He died before I gave birth to a boy,” Justina explained.
“I didn’t go to Godwin’s funeral since I wasn’t strong enough to travel to the village because I was severely pregnant.”

“However, I realized that my husband was saddened and impacted by Godwin’s early death following his burial.” He was so severely disturbed that he almost lost his job.

“Even when I delivered a baby boy for him, he stopped being a joyful man.”

“I tried multiple times to talk to him about the future of our new baby, but he was uninterested because he knew deep down that he wasn’t responsible for the pregnancy and was merely acting.

“The man was dissatisfied in the extreme. My husband jolted me awake one morning in October and broke down in tears, but he couldn’t tell me what was bothering him.

“He was calm enough to tell me why he was weeping after approximately 40 minutes.”

“He began by apologizing to me for not disclosing to me from the beginning that the late Godwin was his biological son.

“He claimed that when he was younger, he had an affair with a girl that resulted in a pregnancy, which the girl refused to abort.” Godwin was born to her and raised by his mother.

“So when he met me and I expressed strong opposition to any man who previously had a child out of wedlock, he opted to keep it hidden from me so he wouldn’t lose me.”

“All these years, he stated he didn’t know how to tell me about it.” He claimed that he wanted to abort the pregnancy, but that his parents accepted care for him while he continued his education.

“He added that after he finished his studies, he decided that the youngster should come live with us so that I could train him.” But, in order to avoid being a victim, he kept his true identity hidden from me.

“My husband sobbed again, saying that the late Godwin was his only son and that he knew he had nothing to do with the pregnancy that resulted in the freshly born baby boy.

“He begged me to tell him who the true father of the new born baby was because we hadn’t done any lovemaking in the months leading up to the pregnancy.”

“I realized at that moment that lying would just worsen the matter,” Justina stated, “so I chose to come clean.”

“I cried violently and burst into tears.” I had a hard time explaining it to him because he had been straightforward with me at such a late hour.

“I knelt before him in tears and told to him that my recently born baby was fathered by the late Godwin, his own son.”

“I begged him to pardon me for all my misdeeds, explaining that it was an attempt to preserve my marriage and bear a child for him, and that instead of going outdoors, I thought I should test my fertility with his relative to see if the fault was mine or his.”

“I pleaded with him to pardon me for all my misdeeds, explaining that I took that course of action to safeguard the marriage, and that the consolation is that the new baby boy would replace his son because his late son’s blood is in the new baby boy.”

According to Justina, her husband’s first reaction was rage, because he couldn’t conceive his son sleeping with his wife to the point of impregnating her, and his wife allowing it to happen under the same roof.

However, their lives have not remained the same after their mutual confession in October 2021, as their former cat and dog connection has deteriorated further.

“He (Donald) kept emaciating,” she stated. He didn’t say anything and seemed uninterested in the new baby.

“We didn’t chat much, and he didn’t answer to my questions.” I was worried that he would kill my son at one point. I was frightened about his aloofness, so I dashed out of the home to see one of my uncles who also lives in town.

“My husband slept and died in his sleep two days later, on the 27th of October.”

“Now his folks are accusing me of being responsible for his death, and they’re threatening to kill me as well,” she continued, her eyes welling up with tears.

“My brother, I am not myself,” Justina continued. I’m perplexed. I don’t think I deserve to live another day, so I’m thinking about killing myself because my attempt to give my spouse a child has devastated my life.

While confronting the two families was tough owing to the tragedy that had befallen them, our correspondent was able to speak with the late Donald’s mother, who stated, “She (Justina) killed my only son.”

“We asked her to leave the moment we realized she couldn’t conceive, but she refused.

“She caused my son’s life to become unstable, which resulted in his death.”

“Before he died, my son told me everything that had transpired.”

Despite our correspondent’s prodding, she refused to say anything else.

Mr Stephen, Justina’s uncle, informed our correspondent that he would not say anything “until after my sister’s husband’s burial.”

“But for the time being, she’ll be staying with me.” Allow them to establish that she was to blame for her husband’s death.

APC group commends Buni-led committee for excellent performance, says party’s glory restored

0

Governor Mai Mala Buni-led All Progressives Congress’ Caretaker Extraordinary Convention Planning Committee has been commended for restoring the party’s lost glory and setting it on the path for future success.

The APC Mandate Forum gave this commendation today in a press statement co-signed by its National President, Chief Alechenu Adejo Adaji and Secretary-General, Engr Gideon Unazi.

According to the group, the news of the committee’s sack is “orchestrated by some unfaithful party members and intended to cause a crack within the party”.

Throwing its weight behind the committee, the APC Mandate Forum said they have been able to address the myriad of challenges that threatened the foundation of the party.

The group, therefore, passed a vote of confidence on the party leadership, noting that its membership has surged remarkably.

While endorsing the proposed February national convention, the APC forum urged the Yobe State Governor and his team not to be deterred by disgruntled party members.

The group, however, advised party members acting as moles to tow the path of honour by resigning their membership with immediate effect.

Read full statement below:

The group noted that the committee has shown bravery and an unflinching commitment towards positioning the party for electoral success in the coming elections.

Introduction:

The APC Mandate Forum is a group of young party faithful that have devoted substantial time, energy, and resources to preserve the ideals of the APC as a party in availing the citizens of the dividends of democracy in the country.

The APC Mandate Forum has also been an advocate of good governance through the robust engagements by members drawn from the intelligentsia that is burning alive with passion towards the country’s socio-economic development through town hall meetings, press conferences, stakeholders engagements and other activities across the country.

The Issues:

The news making the rounds indicating the sacking of the Buni led caretaker committee of the APC was indeed one with the potential of causing a crisis of immeasurable proportion within the party. This is our considered opinion was puerile, orchestrated by some unfaithful party members, and intended to cause crack within the party.

Our Position:

After extensive deliberations by the leadership of the APC Mandate Forum, we wish to state that the efforts to discredit the noble achievements of Governor Mai Mala Buni as the caretaker chairman of the APC cannot be overemphasized given the way and manner he has been able to address the myriad of challenges that threatened the foundation of the party.

It can be sufficiently stated that the Mai Mala Buni led caretaker committee indeed displayed acts of bravery and an unflinching commitment towards positioning the party for electoral success in the coming elections.

Therefore, we are alarmed that some disgruntled elements within the party would elect to condescend to engage in acts that would divide the party and cause the party electoral losses during the election.

The APC Mandate Forum wishes to use this medium to advise party members acting as moles in the party to tow the path of honour by resigning their membership with immediate effect.

It is therefore sufficiently evident that those against the party’s interest are behind the plot to rubbish the lofty gains recorded by the Buni led caretaker committee. They have elected to be disgruntled for reasons best known to them as the Buni led caretaker committee has diligently carried all along to restore peace in the party.

Resolutions:

Consequently, the APC Mandate Forum wishes to make the following resolutions:

That we endorse the set date of February 2022 for the party’s national convention and to thank the caretaker committee for how it has conducted its affairs in the last few months since it came into power.

That we commend the caretaker committee for successfully holding state, local government and ward congresses across the country despite the attempt by some individuals and groups to truncate the process and make the APC a laughing stock in the country.

That we commend the caretaker committee for expanding the membership base of the party across the country in a most transparent manner that saw to the boosting of the membership base of the party.

That we commend the caretaker committee for the electoral victory in Ondo state and the bringing into the party some governors from the opposition party.

That we pass a resounding vote of confidence on Governor Mai Mala Bubi and the entire caretaker committee members for a job well done so far.

That we call on all APC supporters the world over to support the caretaker committee and enjoin party men and women to bring onboard only those who can sustain the cohesion, unity and tolerance being foist on the party by the caretaker committee.

Commendation:

The APC Mandate Forum commends the Buni led caretaker committee for the efforts thus far. We encourage them to continue working assiduously towards hosting a successful national convention.

In Borno State, troops neutralize BH/ISWAP terrorists

0

On Friday, December 3, 2021, troops from Sector 1 Joint Task Force (JTF) North East (NE), Operation HADIN KAI (OPHK), eliminated scores of Boko Haram (BH) and Islamic State of West Africa Province (ISWAP) terrorists who penetrated Kala Balge town in Borno State on weapons trucks and motorcycles.

Insurgents attacked troops stationed at the Forward Operational Base (FOB) Rann, a town on the Nigerian-Cameroonian border, but the military responded with overwhelming firepower, forcing the terrorists to abandon their mission and retreat in chaos.

According to Brigadier General Onyema Nwachukwu, Director Army Public Relations, in the fierce battle for Kala Balge, troops defended the town and neutralized 26 BH/ISWAP terrorists, capturing terrorists’ combat vehicles, 18 AK 47 rifles, and one M-21 rifle with large quantities of ammunition, as well as destroying several other pieces of equipment.

Two commanders and five soldiers, according to the statement, paid the ultimate price, while three others who sustained gunshot wounds are still receiving medical attention.

Lieutenant General Faruk Yahaya, the Chief of Army Staff (COAS), has paid tribute to the fallen warriors who paid the ultimate price in defending their homeland.

Vice President Yemi Osinbajo urges security agencies to adopt a data-driven culture

0

To address Nigeria’s current security difficulties, Vice President Yemi Osinbajo says the country’s security and intelligence institutions must develop a culture that is empirical, data-driven, analytical, and characterised by forensic rigour.

This was expressed by Osinbajo at the National Institute for Security Studies’ EIMC 14 Executive Intelligence Management Course graduation ceremony on Saturday.

The Vice President emphasized the need for security agencies to reimagine Nigeria’s security and intelligence architecture’s institutional culture, and urged graduating students to be sharper and more inventive in their approach.

“It has fallen on you to be the generation of intelligence and security professionals who will marshal Nigeria’s answers to the various threats we face.”

“There is no doubt that we must be better and more inventive in marshalling these answers.

“We are compelled by the demands of our time to be much more astute in our business practices.

“Not only do we have to compete with well-equipped non-state actors, some of whom are hostile, but we also have to stay up with society.”

“The risks of this age push us to be even more innovative, in addition to being more smarter.

“The intelligence industry necessitates the ability to anticipate the unexpected, to foresee the impact of unanticipated outcomes and events.”

Services of intelligence

Osinbajo stated that intelligence services must foresee threats to which they have a clear line of sight, and that due to resource limits, Nigeria will not wait for threats to become obvious risks before acting.

“Rather than reacting, our intelligence services must be proactive, staying ahead of rather than behind the curve. Before threats become evident perils, they must be identified and treated.

“It’s a hefty responsibility to bear.” But the truth is that the intelligence community is expected to be a step ahead of the rest of us by its very nature.

“This necessitates a great level of imagination.” A lack of imagination is a failure of intelligence.

“I must emphasize that creativity, the ability to think in terms of various different scenarios, variables, and possibilities, is the gift of skill that should define the intelligence officer of this new century.”

Local safety

The availability and use of technology by criminal and terrorist persons and groups, as well as inter-agency coordination, are all issues that the country’s security elite must face, according to Vice President Osinbajo.

According to him, the question of global dimensions to local security challenges reflects the intricacy of any local challenge, which has a worldwide or trans-border connection.

He believed that solving local security issues would require an understanding of their worldwide implications.

“Take, for example, the insurgency in the north east; you can’t really comprehend its magnitude unless you understand its ties to Al-Qaeda in the Maghreb, Al-Shabab, and the so-called Islamic State in the Middle East.”

“The Boko Haram, ISWAP insurgency has since evolved into a multi-country insurgency affecting Chad, Niger, and Cameroon.”

Conceptualization of geostrategic importance

Prof. Osinbajo stated that the large quantity of firearms available to criminal gangs in every zone of Nigeria necessitates intelligence and security leaders’ thinking on solutions to security challenges to be geo-strategic.

“As primary leaders and planners of our security architecture, our intelligence and security elite must clearly be geo-strategic in their solution formulation.”

“We expect you to become acquainted with the history, current operations, and methods of operation of these transnational terrorist groups with ties to local terrorists.”

“You need to know how they fund themselves, how they carry weaponry and ammunition, and what technologies will be available to them in the months and years ahead.”

Taking advantage of technology

Nigeria’s size and decreasing resources, according to Osinbajo, have required the employment of technology in the fight against insecurity.

“As a result, we must make use of technology.” We must come up with technology-driven solutions to solve our security needs at a time when national resources are stretched tight.

“The issues are the same whether we’re talking about border law enforcement and police, or surveillance and reconnaissance programs targeted at finding criminals in our coastal waters or locating terrorists hiding among the general populace.”

“To compensate for the human resource shortage, we must become more smarter in the deployment of intelligence; in the deployment of reconnaissance technologies.”

“Technology has the potential to be a force multiplier, enhancing our ability to effectively safeguard our region.” Knowing that we should use technology for surveillance and combat isn’t enough.

“At the heart of the security environment’s complexity is technology, and how it has empowered criminal non-state actors with capabilities that were previously exclusively available to nation states.” Criminal non-state actors now have access to weaponry that were previously solely available to nation states.

“Criminal potential on the dark web, a virtual underworld that houses a worldwide unlawful economy that even state actors have struggled to penetrate.”

“Transactions such as illicit weaponry, illicit drugs, child trafficking, and even weapons of mass devastation are performed within this underground universe.”

Collaboration between agencies

Prof. Osinbajo also addressed inter-agency coordination and synergy, stating that “we are only as good as the synergy between the government’s law enforcement and security agencies.”

President Buhari, he added, formed the Committee on Needs Assessment of National Security Requirements in response to this.

“The president signed a supplementary budget to the tune of N802 billion for military, security, and intelligence agencies and their particular needs as a consequence of the committee’s work,” the vice president stated.

Mrs. Aisha Buhari, Nigeria’s First Lady, who was also present at the event, expressed hope that the 10-month training will provide them with the necessary knowledge and expertise to address the country’s current security concerns.

She urged the graduates to put their newfound knowledge and abilities to good use during their training.

Yusuf Bichi, Director-General, State Services, congratulated the graduates and described them as change agents in his speech.

He urged them to apply their knowledge to the country’s present security challenges.

There were also visitors from neighboring countries.

Zulum asks military to wake up as he visits the Maiduguri Estate Attack

0

Babagana Umara Zulum, the governor of Borno State, has paid a visit to the Maiduguri housing development that was damaged by a rocket launcher on Saturday morning, believed to have been launched by Boko Haram/ISWAP terror organizations.

Governor Zulum, who paid a visit to the estate, promised to form a “small committee” to analyze the property’s damages and advise the government on how to prevent similar occurrences on the scene and other government properties in the city.

Zulum, who had been applauding the military for the previous year, was angered by the attack as well as the state’s recent kidnappings. He termed the Saturday attack “worrisome” and urged the military to “wake up” from some of its past indifference.
“It is terribly terrible and unfortunate that this and other attacks are taking place at this time. The insurgents appear to have come dangerously close to Maiduguri. Our military must wake up and ensure that proper surveillance is in place. We should be able to avoid this situation. I believe there is something wrong that we need to investigate after the insurgents came so near to firing rockets.”

“We must fortify Maiduguri, as we will continue to do around the state’s other cities and towns.” To prevent such attacks, we must maintain appropriate patrols on a daily basis.”

The bombs were detonated near Ngomari Airport, Njimtilo, and Shuwari hamlet, all of which are close to the estate. The governor was informed that no one had died.

Zulum expressed his condolences to all those impacted and promised that the government will take steps to prevent a repeat of the incident.

“I express my condolences to all who have been harmed by today’s incident. I will form a small committee to assess the extent of the damage and advise the government on how to prevent similar occurrences.” Zulum remarked.
