Supreme Court Schedules Final Decision Date on Edo Election Case

0

On Thursday, July 10, 2025, the Supreme Court is scheduled to issue its ruling over the Edo gubernatorial election of 2024.
According to reports, Asue Ighodalo of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) is running against Monday Okpebholo of the All Progressives Congress (APC) for Edo State governor.
Parties to the matter were informed of the ruling date.

After hearing the parties’ arguments, the court postponed indefinitely last week.

Following arguments, the Supreme Court stated that a new judgment date would be announced in due course and reserved its decision sine die, or without a set date.

Ighodalo contended, represented by Ken Mozia (SAN), that the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) ought to have declared him the winner as he received the majority of legitimate votes.

“Based on the legitimate votes cast, we implore the court to declare our client the duly elected governor and to invalidate Obekpolo’s return,” Mozia said.

Nonetheless, INEC, represented by Kanu Agabi (SAN), contested the appeal and urged the supreme court to reject it completely for lack of merit.

In their suit, Agabi contended that Ighodalo and the PDP had first declared the entire election to be “illegal and invalid” because it was allegedly not in accordance with the Electoral Act 2022.

Agabi told the court, “You cannot try to profit from an election while simultaneously discrediting it.”

“They’re acting strangely. No one can be proclaimed the victor of the election if it is illegal as stated.

INEC insisted that the Supreme Court should uphold Obekpolo’s election, claiming that the PDP’s appeal was full of inconsistencies.

According to the article, Justice Garba Lawal presided over the five-member panel and declared that judgment had been reserved after hearing from the parties.

“This case has been postponed indefinitely. All parties will be notified of the decision date,” said Justice Lawal.

Rep Endorses creation of Apa state from Benue, says it will end ‘historic marginalisation’

According to House of Representatives member Philip Agbese, the establishment of Apa state from Benue will end the “historic marginalization” of the area.

Speaking to reporters on the fringes of the House of Representatives’ open week in Abuja on Wednesday, Agbese, who represents Benue’s Ado/Ogbadigbo/Okpokwu federal constituency, also advocated for the creation of new LGAs in the state.

The move, he claimed, will improve service delivery, increase economic opportunities, deepen accountability and transparency at the grassroots level, and bring governance closer to the people.

In the process of rewriting the 1999 constitution, the national assembly has been presented with a number of ideas, one of which is the establishment of states.

“By establishing Apa state and new local governments, we can close the gap between our people and governance and make sure they get the resources and attention they are entitled to,” Agbese stated.

More efficient governance results from local administrations being nearer to the populace. More accessibility for the populace to their leaders would result in more responsive governance.

“Our region would experience growth and development as a result of Apa State.” We possess both natural and human resources, and the establishment of Apa State might enable us to realize our greatest potential.

In terms of the distribution of resources and the advancement of infrastructure, our area has historically been marginalized.

With the independence and resources that come with statehood, “Apa state would offer a platform for accelerated development, enabling us to address our unique challenges and opportunities.”

Agbese stated that strong political will may overcome the difficulties that come with establishing a state.

“The difficulties of establishing new states and local governments are not something we are unaware of,” he stated.

“But I think we can overcome these obstacles and create a better future for our area if we are determined, diligent, and have the people’s support.

“Let us take advantage of this constitutional review opportunity to reshape our future and make sure our constituency receives the resources and attention it is due.”

Community leaders and traditional institutions were among the stakeholders Agbese urged to support the formation of Apa state from Benue state.

Announcing the results of the 2025 Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE), the National Examinations Council (NECO) revealed the results.
The junior secondary school exit test, which covered 12 subjects and was administered at various locations around the country from May 12 to May 23, attracted 179,201 applicants in total, the Council reports.
The release came after the 2025 BECE Award Committee Meeting, which was conducted at NECO headquarters in Minna, Niger State, according to a statement released on Wednesday by Azeez Sani, NECO’s Acting Director of Information and Public Relations.

Sani stated that after being validated by internal and external education stakeholders, the Council completed all the necessary steps for the findings’ dissemination.

“The BECE Award Committee Meeting’s successful conclusion cleared the path for the results’ release,” Sani said.

Dr. Folake Olatunji-David, Director of Basic Education at the Federal Ministry of Education, chaired the meeting and expressed satisfaction with the exam’s conduct and results.

“We are happy with the open and honest process that resulted in the results being approved and made public,” she said.

During the meeting, the committee—which was made up of NECO management and a few secondary school principals from all around Nigeria—also looked at performance trends and the logistics of exams.

Set for July 23 and 24 is the retest.
For applicants who failed the English Studies and Mathematics sections of the 2025 BECE, the Award Committee has approved the date and schedule for the retake exam.

In 2025, the retest is planned for July 23 and 24.

Parents, candidates, and schools were asked by NECO to notice the dates and make appropriate preparations.

Property Dispute: Olusanya Denies Receiving Efcc’s Letter Over N102m Draft

The Chief Executive Officer of Oak Homes Limited, a property firm, Olukayode Olusanya, had denied ever receiving a letter from the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission dated September 13, 2023, inviting him to collect a bank draft of N102m from the commission.

Olusanya, while being cross-examined by the EFCC counsel, Mr. E.S. Okondu, before Justice Akingbola George of the Lagos State High Court sitting at Tafawa Balewa Square, said he did not receive any letter .

Olusanya and his company, Oak Homes Limited, are the claimants in the suit marked LD/4471LM/2023, filed against a Nigerian-American engineer, Mr. Anthony Ugbebor, (first defendant), and the EFCC (second defendant), over an alleged dispute regarding the ownership of a property worth N152m.

He told the court, “I did not receive any letter or call from the EFCC asking me to come and collect the bank draft”.

Under cross-examination, he admitted making a statement at the EFCC but claimed it was not voluntary.

“I only went to the EFCC with a payment plan because that was the condition they gave me for my release after I was detained for three days, but “there was a demand on me to make a refund that was the condition for my release,” he said.

He also confirmed attending a meeting on August 28, 2023, with the EFCC and other parties involved in the dispute. According to him, the EFCC had acknowledged during the meeting that the matter was civil and advised both parties to settle out of court.

When asked whether he brought a bank draft of N102m to the EFCC, Olusanya responded in the affirmative.

“I did bring a draft of N102m to the EFCC’s office, but that money is no longer mine to take,” he said.

The EFCC’s counsel, Okondu, stated that pursuant to the August 28 meeting, the commission wrote a letter dated September 13, 2023, asking Olusanya to collect the draft. But the witness maintained he never received it.

When shown the letter in court, Olusanya said, “I am not aware of any such letter. I did not receive it.”

He also confirmed that the bank draft was still with the EFCC.

Following the cross-examination, Justice George adjourned the matter to October 20, 2025, for the trial continuation and for the defence to open its case.

Meanwhile, in a related criminal case before Justice Musa Kakaki of the Federal High Court, Lagos, on Tuesday, the second prosecution witness, Mr. Shehu Yakubu, a stockbroker, testified about financial transactions involving Olusanya and Oak Homes Limited.

Yakubu said he first met Olusanya in 2017 through his friend, Anthony Ugbebor, an engineer, the nominal complainant.

“Ugbebor brought Olusanya to my office and introduced him as the CEO of Oak Homes,” Yakubu told the court. “He said Olusanya offered him two flats at Musa Yar’Adua, Victoria Island, Lagos.”

Led in evidence by a Chief Superintendent of Police, Monday Omo-Osagie, Yakubu said he made payments on behalf of Ugbebor to Oak Homes.

“The first payment of N85m was made on November 21, 2017, to a Zenith Bank account on Bourdillon belonging to Oak Homes. A second payment of N49.5m was made on August 4, 2020, to the same Oak Homes account,” he said.

According to him, the receipts for both payments were acknowledged and emailed to him by Ugbebor. Yakubu said he made a statement to the police along with a letter from his office detailing the transactions.

The court admitted the statement and the letter as Exhibits 2 and 3 respectively, following no objection from the defence counsel, Adeleke Agboola (SAN).

However, when the prosecution sought to tender photocopies of the payment receipts, Agboola objected, citing non-compliance with Section 84 of the Evidence Act.

“This is a criminal trial, and everything must be done strictly in accordance with the law,” Agboola said. “No foundation was laid, and no certificate accompanying the documents was filed. We urge the court to reject them.”

In response, the prosecution argued that the foundation had been laid and that the documents were relevant.

But in a short ruling, Justice Kakaki dismissed the document sought to be tendered.

He ruled: “I find that the document sought to be tendered did not meet the compliance of Section 84 of the Evidence Act, and is therefore not admitted.”

Under cross-examination by Agboola, the witness confirmed that the payments were made from his company’s account and that Oak Homes.

During further cross-examination by Oak Homes’ counsel, Mr. Jude Ehiadu, Yakubu said he did not play any other role in the transaction beyond making the payments.

“I didn’t play any other role after the payment and I don’t know what happened after the disbursement,” he said.

Justice Kakaki then adjourned the criminal trial to July 9, 2025, for continuation of the hearing.

ALGON Declares Full Support for Aliyu Bello Amid Nasarawa APC Turmoil

In light of the ongoing suspension of Dr. Aliyu Bello by executive members of his electoral ward due to suspected anti-party activities, the Nasarawa State chapter of the Association of Local Governments of Nigeria has announced its support for Bello, the Nasarawa State Chairman of the ruling All Progressives Congress.

On behalf of other executives, Ibrahim Iliyasu, the APC Chairman in Gayam Ward of the state’s Lafia Local Government Area, had announced Aliyu Bello’s suspension, stating that his alleged involvement in anti-party activities embarrassed the party and damaged the legitimacy of their joint attempts to elevate it.

The 12 other chairmen elected on the APC platform were led by Safiyanu Isa Andaha, the Executive Chairman of Akwanga LGA and the state’s ALGON Chairman, to the party’s headquarters in Lafia, the state capital, on Wednesday to express their support for Aliyu Bello’s continued leadership of the party.

Andaha requested the ward’s leadership to immediately write an apology letter to the state’s APC chairman in order to maintain the party’s unity and advancement, calling the Gayam ward executives’ actions “sad and ugly.”

In addition to announcing the unwavering support of the state’s 18 Administrators of Development Areas, 147 Ward Councillors, and 13 LG Chairmen for Aliyu Bello’s continuation, the state’s ALGON chairman promised not to let desperate politicians undo the party’s decades-long achievements.

He said, “We have been monitoring a very depressing and unsightly situation in which a few people from Gayam ward are attempting to suspend our chairman.” A guy who is devoted to the party, who has demonstrated outstanding leadership, and who has altered the party’s viewpoint.

“We are here today, chairman, to inform you that under your direction, the APC in Nasarawa State has made great strides. Your suspension from the party will not be justified because we have witnessed your acceptance of all party members.

“The 147 elected Councillors, 18 Development Area Administrators, and 13 Executive Chairmen firmly support your leadership because we are proud of your accomplishments.”

Ahead of the general elections in 2027, Andaha further took advantage of the occasion to urge all APC members and supporters in the state’s 13 LGAs to stay united and not let desperate politicians use them to sow division within the party.

The chairman of the Nasarawa State APC, Aliyu Bello, responded by thanking the 13 council chairmen for their faith in him to continue leading the party in spite of the present conflict with some members of his ward’s executive committee.

Since the other 19 executive members of the Gayam Ward have continued to express their support for his leadership, he clarified that the procedure was deemed unlawful because only eight of the 27 executive members had signed the document suspending him.

Although Bello denied any involvement in anti-party actions, he stated that he is still the legitimate state chairman of the party and cautioned that the APC executive committee members in Gayam Ward had no authority to dismiss him from his position as a state executive officer.

He said that decisions about his role as chairman could only be made by the state executive committee, which is the highest decision-making body, and not by the executive members of the APC in Gayam Ward.

He said that he had just received a vote of confidence from the state executive committee for his hard work and dedication to the party’s expansion and advancement.

“I can’t be suspended by the Gayam Ward executives. Their quest is doomed from the start. They rushed to a magistrate court in desperation to seek an injunction, but according to our (APC) constitution, you must first try every internal option before going to court.

They tried to trouble the magistrate when they went to the magistrate court, but the magistrate later revoked the order.

“Your arrival here today is therefore appropriate. In addition to identifying with me, you have come here to support Governor Abdullahi Sule, as certain individuals are attempting to use intimidation to force him to comply for their own self-serving political ends. In anticipation of the 2027 elections, we have made the decision to follow the governor wherever he goes,” he continued.

According to information obtained, the 13 local government chairmen for APC Chairman Dr. Aliyu Bello made a solidarity visit, and the State’s party leaders were in attendance.

Reps Introduce Bill to Expand National Assembly Seats From 469 To 552

The House of Representatives has suggested a constitutional change that would reserve 5% of seats for people with disabilities (PWDs) and 10% of seats for women in the National Assembly.
According to what is known, the proposal calls for the creation of 83 more seats that would be reserved for women. Of these, 55 would be in the House of Representatives, boosting its membership from 360 to 415, and 28 would be in the Senate, increasing the National Assembly’s total number of seats from 469 to 552.

During the official commencement of the 2025 National Assembly Open Week and the launch of the 10th House Midterm Legislative Scorecard in Abuja on Tuesday, Speaker of the House of Representatives Tajudeen Abbas announced the plan.

He stated that in order to guarantee gender and disability inclusion, the draft amendment aims to include the quotas into the Constitution. These reserved seats would be filled by direct elections with separate votes, and they would be divided by state to maintain regional parity.

The Speaker stated that qualifying disability advocacy organizations would nominate candidates for the 5% of seats already held by PWDs.

“Introducing constitutionally guaranteed reserved seats for women and people with disabilities is a key component of our inclusive governance proposals,” Abbas stated. In order to maintain regional balance, the draft amendment would provide 10% (10%) of Senate and House of Representatives members to women, with each state receiving a certain percentage.

To encourage continuity and mentoring, these seats would be filled by direct elections on different ballots with staggered periods. Candidates nominated by recognized disability advocacy groups would compete for the 5% of seats allotted for people with disabilities. Reserved-seat lawmakers would be fully integrated into legislative action by having the same rights, privileges, and committee assignments as their peers.

Less than 1% of parliamentary seats were held by women in 1960, the year of independence. It only increased to 2% by 1990. Women made up only 3.9% of the House and 4% of the Senate in 1999. Even though they make up half of the population, women’s representation is still unchanged today.

The Speaker cited international instances, such as Rwanda and Senegal, where constitutional quotas increased the proportion of women in parliament from less than 5% to more than 30% in a single election cycle.

Borno Politicians Abandon PDP, APC in Favour of ADC Ahead of 2027 Polls

With the recent inauguration of David Mark, the interim national chairman of the coalition party (African Democratic Party/ADC), a former president of the Nigerian Senate and a stalwart of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), as the race for the general elections in 2027 picks up speed, there was a significant defection into ADC in Borno state.

Mattawali Kashim Ibrahim Imam, a former PDP candidate for governor and an APC mainstay in Borno, hosted a special dinner at his Maiduguri home recently, according to a video that went viral on social media. According to sources, the event included talks with numerous political figures in the state in order to prepare for his decision to join the ADC.

Notably, Nigeria’s two principal opposition figures, former PDP presidential candidate Alhaji Atiku Abubakar and former Labour Party (LP) presidential contender Mr. Peter Obi, have joined the new political party after recently leaving their respective parties.

The governor of Borno State, Professor Babagana Umara Zulum, has denied rumors in some online media that he would join five other governors in switching to the African Democratic Congress (ADC), the opposition coalition group.

According to our correspondent, Alh. Idris Mamman Durkwa, a former candidate for governor of Borno state, and Hon. Sheriff Banki, a youth organizer and stakeholder advocate, have taken the lead after abandoning the PDP along with thousands of their supporters, families, and associates and setting up camp with the ADC.

Additionally, it was learned that Durkwa, a former federal civil servant who entered politics and stormed Maiduguri last week, was at the forefront of the state’s massive defections, as numerous members of the ruling APC and other opposition parties began resigning from their positions with their ward chairmen.

Hon. Mohammed Umara Kumalia, a former House minority leader and candidate for governor, is one of them. He is running for the PDP’s 2023 Borno Central Senate seat.

Alh. Saleh Kida, a candidate for the PDP’s 2023 deputy governorship; Alh. Ali Wurge, a former national treasurer of the party; Hon. Babakura Abba Yusuf, a candidate for the Maiduguri Metropolitan Council (MMC); Hon. Abdulrazaq Ahmed Zanna, a candidate for the 2023 PDP’s Bama, Ngala, Kala Balge federal constituency; and other candidates for the House of Representatives.

The list of early defectors also includes Hon. Fali Wubulari, a former member of the House of Assembly from the Askira Uba LGA state constituency, Hon. Maina Justice, a leader of stakeholders in the Jere local government area, and numerous opposition party candidates for the House of assemblies in each of the 27 local government areas.

Similarly, 95% of opposition party stakeholders have jumped ships with their former party leaders at the state, local, and ward levels, as have Hon. Isa Lawan Kangar, the Borno North 2023 senatorial candidate, and all ward and local government party executives.

Hon. Sheriff Banki, a youth mobilizer and stakeholder advocate for the movement (coalition), told our correspondent in Maiduguri about the situation and stated that the flood of defections into the ADC was a blatant sign of the APC’s failure under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

He also criticized the PDP leadership for letting the once-great African political party lose support and acceptance because of self-serving agendas.

“Under the chairmanship of Hon. Zanna Gadama, the Borno PDP has remained compromised and sellout to the powers that be, forcing its teaming members to quit,” the youth leader particularly claimed.

Additionally, Banki ascribed the action to “the worsening insecurity bedevilling Nigerians and the economic hardship and frustration by electorate at the local, state, and national level.”

In his own words: “I am pleased to notify you that the recent mass resignations and defections by significant opposition party members, including the ruling APC, in Borno State mark the start of positive developments in the state’s and the nation’s political sector.

“Despite experiencing economic hardships as a result of poor policies and programs, Nigerians, particularly the grassroots, have not been sleeping with their eyes closed in the last two years under the APC-led government, despite President Tinubu’s promise of a Renewed Hope Agenda.” Banki said.

Because ADC is the only political party committed to governing an inclusive democracy and saving its citizens, he urged the decent people of the state to join.

IPOB’s Political Wing Speaks on Plans for 2027 General Elections

In order to establish itself as a political option that seeks to bring peace and security back to the Southeast, the Indigenous People of Biafra Political Wing (IPOB-PW) has started to increase grassroots mobilization as Nigeria prepares for the national elections in 2027 and the forthcoming race for governor of Anambra.

The group claimed in a statement provided to the media that the continued insecurity in Igboland, which includes violent attacks and deaths in states like Anambra, Enugu, and Benue, is the reason for its increased political activity.

Addressing the region’s instability requires political will, which IPOB-PW maintains is currently lacking among politicians “made by Abuja” as opposed to elected with a strong local mandate.

Because the majority of the region’s political leaders are either scared or reluctant to act decisively, the killings in Alaigbo remain unchecked. “Political action is needed to address the underlying cause of this insecurity,” the group said.

IPOB-PW insists that full political engagement is the best way to achieve Igbo self-determination and safety, despite conflicts with Fulani herdsmen and worries of external invasion.

In order to create a wide-ranging campaign before 2027, the group stressed that it is aggressively contacting different grassroots organizations around the Southeast.

“We are contacting those on the ground and organizing internally. We have a big announcement coming up. The statement further stated that IPOB-PW is organizing to address the problems rather than merely monitoring them.

The group advised its followers to maintain composure but vigilance while restating its goal to eradicate insecurity politically.

Additionally, it denounced the recent wave of violence in the area and urged authorities to hold those responsible for it accountable.

“Crime will persist unless offenders are held responsible. IPOB-PW is dedicated to guiding the Alaigbo political ship toward safety, justice, and dignity because our people require political liberation,” the statement said.

The group’s remarks coincide with escalating discussions over the place of regional movements in national politics, especially in view of Nigeria’s intricate governance and security issues.

As 2027 draws near, observers now anticipate the momentous news that IPOB-PW predicted.

No Presidential Slot Open Until 2031, APC Tells Opposition Party ADC

According to the All Progressives Congress, President Bola Tinubu would have the support of the North to serve another four years in office, and there won’t be a vacancy at Aso Rock, the seat of authority, until 2031.

Speaking at a media roundtable hosted by the Nigeria Union of Journalists on Monday in Ibadan, Ajibola Bashiru, the national secretary of the APC, specifically stated this.

As a “mushroom party” and a “contraption” full of self-serving people with little political significance, he rejected the ADC partnership.

Northern APC structures are firmly in support of Mr. Tinubu’s 2027 ambition, according to Mr. Bashiru, who lists Sokoto, Bauchi, Kebbi, and Zamfara as states that are on board.

Important northern leaders are supporting Mr. Tinubu, the lawmaker continued, in contrast to those who are circulating unfounded “beer-parlour gossip.” Opposition candidates should wait for their turn, he said, adding that there won’t be a vacancy in Aso Rock until 2031.

Talk of a plot by the North against Mr. Tinubu’s 2027 bid was also refuted by Mr. Bashiru. According to him, the president was welcomed in Katsina, Gombe, Kaduna, and Kano.

“To say the North is banding together against Tinubu is a complete and utter fabrication. I say this because I am knowledgeable. Not that I’m a weakling. According to Amilcar Cabral, “Tell no lies, claim no easy victories,” is how I conduct myself, Bashiru said.

Despite the apparent street celebrations in certain states, such as Kano, Katsina, and Gombe, he assured that northern support for Tinubu is solid. According to the APC chairman, “Omo Ologo,” a song written by Dauda Kahutu Rarara for Mr. Tinubu, has become an anthem in the North.

With a win percentage of more than 75% in prior off-cycle elections, he claims that the APC has demonstrated its national acceptance.

He declared, “Nigerians, not Togolese, Cameroonians, or foreigners, are the ones voting for our party.”

Mr. Bashiru commended Mr. Tinubu for his developing support across the North, inclusive leadership, and advancements in infrastructure. He said that the APC was not in danger or facing any crises as a result of the resignation of former chairman Abdullahi Ganduje.

BitChat, a messaging app developed by former Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey (now CEO of X), enables users to communicate encrypted conversations without internet connectivity.

In a post on X on Sunday, Dorsey unveiled the app, which is currently in its early phases.

He explained that it was a side project that investigated decentralized communication, message encryption, and Bluetooth mesh networking.

He commented, “My weekend project to learn about relays, store and forward models, message encryption models, Bluetooth mesh networks, and a few other things.”

The app’s source code and white paper have been made public on GitHub, and iOS users may now access a beta version of the app through TestFlight.

HOW IT OPERATES

According to the description given by Dorsey, BitChat uses a store-and-forward architecture where messages are transmitted from one Bluetooth-enabled device to another until they reach the appropriate receiver.

According to the document, the application is capable of end-to-end encryption, with the noise protocol framework (NPF) being used for authentication and Curve25519 public keys for message security.

Internet relay chat (IRC), a text-based system popular in the early internet era, served as the model for its simple interface.

Dorsey’s long-standing interest in decentralized technology is in line with BitChat.

Prior to departing its board in May 2024, the American businessman had also supported Bluesky, a decentralized social media platform.

Since leaving his position as CEO of Twitter in 2021, he has directed his company, Block, Inc. (previously Square), toward digital payments and Bitcoin infrastructure.
