AFCON: Panic as gunshots reverberate through the capital of Cameroon, hosting Mali, Tunisia, and others

Following a gun battle between government forces and pro-independence fighters in Buea, the capital of the restive Southern Cameroons, there was panic among players in Cameroon for the Africa Cup of Nations.

The gunfight took place before a match between Mali and Tunisia, according to reports.

Mali won 1-0 in a game that ended in a stalemate.

The incident happened less than two miles from the Molyko Sports Complex, where the Malian national team was training on Wednesday, according to a Cameroonian blog called Timescape.

A Cameroonian gendarme officer was killed, and five others, including a lawyer, were injured.

Buea is the capital of Cameroon’s Southwest Region, which, along with the neighboring Northwest Region, is engulfed in violence sparked by the anglophone minority’s attempt to secede from the French-majority country.

Separatists declared a “Federal Republic of Ambazonia” in October 2017 after years of frustration with perceived discrimination.

In an interview with AFP, James Mouangue, the national human rights commission and a professor of public law, clarified that the part of the country hosting Nigeria is relatively safe.

“Given the level of risk, the security measures put in place are exceptional, and there were no issues when we hosted the African Nations Championship in January 2021,” he said.

“I don’t think the jihadists will be able to disrupt the Cup unless they carry out a massive attack,” Guibai Gatama, editor of northern Cameroon’s leading twice-weekly publication, L’Oeil du Sahel, said (The Eye of the Sahel).

“In the north, the stadium where Group D (Egypt, Nigeria, Sudan, and Guinea Bissau) will play is in Garoua, which is far from their sphere of operation.”

Since October 2017, when militants declared an independent state in Cameroon’s northwest and southwest regions, home to the majority of the country’s anglophone minority, the country has been torn apart by violence.

In the fighting, which has killed over 3,000 people and forced over 700,000 people to flee their homes, both separatists and government forces have been accused of atrocities.

Armed groups are frequently accused of kidnapping, killing, or injuring civilians they claim are “collaborating” with Cameroonian authorities.

The unrecognized entity is based on the former British Southern Cameroons, who joined Cameroon after the French colony gained independence in 1960.

Over 3,500 people have died, and over 700,000 have been forced to flee their homes. According to rights monitors, both sides have committed atrocities and abuses.

The government of Cameroon, on the other hand, assured players that “safety will be guaranteed” during the AFCON.

Southern Afric Leadersa praised Mozambique’s security mission

Following the deployment of a multinational force last year, South African President Cyril Ramaphosa claims that “significant progress” has been made in combating a militant insurgency in northern Mozambique.

Ramaphosa, who chairs the Southern African Development Community’s (SADC) defence and security committee, gave the update at a summit convened to assess regional developments.

Six months ago, SADC members and Rwanda stepped in to help the besieged Mozambican army, bringing in over 3,000 troops.

“Significant progress has been made since the deployment,” Ramaphosa said in his opening remarks at the two-day talks in Malawi’s capital.

“The security situation in Cabo Delgado is improving, and some internally displaced people have been able to return to their homes and resume their normal lives,” he said.

Regional forces, working alongside Mozambican troops, have aided in the creation of “safe passage” for humanitarian aid into jihadist-infested areas, he said.

In July, the SADC Mission in Mozambique (SAMIM) was deployed, but in October, its mandate was extended indefinitely.

Since 2017, attacks by Islamic State-linked militants have engulfed Cabo Delgado, a gas-rich province bordering Tanzania.

At least 3,500 people have died, with an estimated 820,000 displaced.

Massacres, beheadings, house fires, and mass kidnappings, particularly of girls, are examples of atrocities.

Six Benue girls were trafficked to Burkina Faso by NSCDC

The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps’ Benue State Command has arrested a suspected human trafficker who was preparing six girls for trafficking.

On January 5, 2022, the suspect, Mnena Kwaghmande, was reportedly apprehended in the Gboko area of Benue, with the victims all set to travel to Burkina Faso.

Kwaghmande claimed to have told the victims’ parents that they would be helping her in her restaurant in Burkina Faso, according to the state Commandant of the corps, Dr Philip Okoh, who paraded the suspect and the victims.

The girls were allegedly selected from the state’s Vandeikya Local Government Area.

“We have a seasoned trafficker who goes around convincing unsuspecting parents that their children are going abroad for greener pastures,” Okoh said. According to the investigation, they were transporting them to Burkina Faso. This operation was carried out in collaboration with NAPTIP.”

He warned parents against releasing their children to people who promised them better opportunities in other countries.

Following the Taliban’s takeover of power, Afghanistan’s ambassador to China, Javid Ahmad Qaem, resigned after months without pay from Kabul.

“Many embassy diplomats had already left, and Kabul had not sent them a salary since August,” Qaem wrote in a handover letter.

“There are many personal and professional reasons,” he explained, “but I don’t want to go into them now.”

China has a short border with Afghanistan, and since the Taliban’s brutal return in August, Beijing has sent humanitarian aid there.

Qaem stated in his letter that a new person had been assigned to the embassy, only naming him Mr. Sadaat. A request for comment on Qaem’s successor was not immediately returned by the Afghan foreign ministry.

Wang Wenbin, a spokesman for China’s Foreign Ministry, said in a daily briefing on Tuesday that Qaem had left the country but did not say when or where.

The Taliban government has not been recognized as legitimate by international governments, including China. The country’s public finances were crippled by harsh sanctions.

Bandits assassinate two people, demanded N10,000 from Katsina gold site operators

Bandits have demanded N10,000 from operators at a gold processing plant in Katsina State’s Jibia Local Government Area for the site’s uninterrupted operation.

The location is in the Bakin Korama community of the council’s Magama Jibia border town.

Residents revealed that the site, which opened about two weeks ago, was home to more than 70 small-scale gold processing centers.

After invading the site on Thursday night and killing two operators, the bandits imposed the levy on the operators, it was learned.

The attack began around 8 p.m. and lasted two hours, according to residents.

Five other operators were reportedly injured in the attack, and the gunmen allegedly kidnapped 11 workers from the construction site.

Tasi’u Abdullahi, the Chairman of the Katsina Minerals Processors, confirmed the incident.

He revealed that the bandits later released one of the kidnapped operators, telling him to deliver a letter informing him of the levy’s imposition.

“On Thursday around 8.10pm, bandits launched an attack,” Abdullahi said in Hausa. They arrived by way of a nearby river. They began collecting money from the people as soon as they arrived, after a boy announced their arrival by shouting “bandits, bandits.” They assassinated two of our people, injured five more, and kidnapped eleven more.” One of the kidnapped victims was eventually sent by the bandits with a handwritten letter saying that the hoodlums’ attack was only the beginning, according to a report from a nearby village head. They are, however, seeking our cooperation by requiring that we adhere to their policy at all times.

“The processing centers are required to raise a contribution of N10,000,” says the policy. They also revealed that they are currently holding 11 people.”

SP Gambo Isah, the Katsina State Police Public Relations Officer, confirmed the incident and said the investigation was still underway.

NDLEA arrested three suspects in possession of illicit drugs in Lagos State.

In Lagos State, the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) arrested three suspects in possession of illicit drugs, including 200 sachets of 225mg Tramadol and 1.5 kilograms of cannabis Sativa.

Sunday Joshua, also known as De-General, a skit maker, was also arrested in the early hours of Wednesday following a raid on a notorious drug joint at Orchid Estate in Lekki, according to the agency.

“Acting on credible intelligence, the narcotic officers stormed the drug joint in the estate, and some persons including the suspected dealer ran away with bags suspected to contain exhibits,” said Mr Femi Babafemi, Director Media and Advocacy, NDLEA headquarters Abuja.

“They ran into a house located at 2B Saula Akinlolu way, Orchid estate, which is the residence of 22-year-old Sunday Joshua aka De General, where a search led to the recovery of drug exhibits including cannabis Sativa; Tramadol 225mg, and some drug use paraphernalia,” according to the trail.

“This came after the suspect requested that the search be recorded on video, which the officers granted out of courtesy. The suspect and his friends decided to disrupt the search of the house in a video that has gone viral on social media.

“The suspect admitted ownership of the drugs recovered from his home in his in-custody confessional statement.”

Egypt’s President Slams the EU on Refugees

Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sissi has slammed European governments for their handling of the migration crisis.

According to El-Sissi, Egypt is home to 6 million people fleeing conflict and poverty in their home countries.

“We didn’t turn them away or send them to camps.” I’m not talking about 5,000 or 10,000 people here; I’m talking about millions. “Our European friends refuse to accept them,” he said.

El-Sissi made the remarks during a session at the World Youth Forum in Sharm el-Sheikh, which is taking place on the Red Sea.

According to the United Nations’ International Organization for Migration, Egypt is home to over 6 million migrants, more than half of whom are from Sudan and South Sudan, where simmering conflicts continue to displace tens of thousands of people every year.

For some, Egypt is both a destination and a haven, as it is the closest and most accessible country.

Others use it as a stopover before attempting the perilous Mediterranean crossing into Europe.

However, the number of migrants departing from Egypt is small in comparison to the number departing from Libya.

Libya has risen to prominence as a major transit point for migrants fleeing war and poverty in Africa and the Middle East in the hopes of finding a better life in Europe.

Chika Nwoba, the Publicity Secretary of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Ebonyi State, collapsed outside the court in Abakaliki where he is being arraigned on Wednesday.

According to reports, he was brought into the courtroom by officers and men from the Ebonyi State Police Command at about 2:45 p.m., but the court’s sitting time was shifted due to Nwoba’s health.

As a result, he was escorted out of the courthouse by the police and later returned, allowing the court session to resume for the second time.

Inside a police patrol van, the PDP Publicity Secretary appeared pale, tired, dizzy, and weak, as if awaiting arraignment.

Moghalu claimed he forgot to notify Buhari of his intention to run for President

Kingsley Moghalu, a presidential candidate for the African Democratic Congress (ADC), tweeted about the 2023 presidential election on Wednesday.

The former Deputy Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) claimed he forgot to inform President Muhammadu Buhari of his intention to run for president.

The post was ostensibly in response to All Progressives Congress (APC) leader Bola Tinubu and Ebonyi Governor Dave Umahi’s visits to the State House.

On Monday and Tuesday, the two told Buhari in separate meetings that they would run for the party’s ticket.

“I completely forgot to tell President @Mbuhari that I’m running for President.” But I informed Nigerians, including him, so no wahala!” wrote Moghalu.

Some people were offended by the tweet, and some responded with photos of him handing out biscuits to children, while others made jokes or offered advice.

“Twitter doesn’t win elections,” says Lolofirstclass. That day, many of them will be online warriors. Send people to start spreading your message from street to street, churches to churches, universities to universities, markets to markets, and even viewing centers.”

In October 2021, Moghalu joined the ADC. Ralph Nwosu, the National Chairman, stated that Nigeria requires “servants and dedicated leaders” like him.

Moghalu, a lawyer and political economist, is one of the Third Force’s leaders. In 2019, he ran for President of the Young Progressives Party (YPP).

Moghalu was the United Nations’ Special Envoy for Africa’s Post-COVID Development Finance.
