The World Safety Organization (WSO) and the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) have signed a Memorandum of Understanding on the need for all Nigerians to be more aware of safe living habits and the environment.

During the signing of the MoU at the NYSC National Directorate Headquarters in Abuja, Mr Soji Olalokun, President of the World Safety Organisation, said the partnership would provide capacity building in health, safety, security, environment, emergency preparedness and response, accident prevention technology, and other areas for Corps volunteers.

The safety emergency response readiness, according to Olalokun, is aimed at equipping Nigerians to create healthy habits and environments at work, in schools, and in all public places.

“Every Corps volunteer contributes to the Scheme’s success through the World Safety Organization.”

It plans to collaborate and facilitate a two-day ‘Train the Trainers’ activity during the Orientation Course for One Hundred Corps Volunteers who will be posted to fifty schools in pairs within the benefiting pilot states of Kogi, FCT, Rivers, Edo, Lagos, and Ekiti, with the hope of eventually covering the remaining states,” Olalokun said.

The WSO President had previously praised Major General Shuaibu Ibrahim, the NYSC Director-General, for his transformational efforts in the scheme and described it as a powerful tool for national development.

Major General Shuaibu Ibrahim, NYSC Director-General, spoke through Director, Legal Services, Barrister Tijani Ibrahim, and pledged the Scheme’s support for the partnership’s success.

During the event, Major General Shuaibu Ibrahim, Director of Legal Services, Barrister Tijani Ibrahim, Director of Community Development and Special Projects, Alhaji Abdulrasaq Salawu, Acting Director of Special Duties, Alhaji Musa Abubakar, and a number of other staff members were honored as World Safety Organization Ambassadors.

On Tuesday, Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State addressed the controversy surrounding the installation of the next Olubadan of Ibadan land, saying that his administration will ensure that the traditional institution of Ibadan is restored to its original concept.

Noting that the current controversy stems from actions taken by the previous government, which the late Olubadan of Ibadan land, Oba Saliu Adetunji, opposed, the governor of Oyo state stated that he will stand for and carry out what the late Olubadan stood for.

“For standing for truth and boldly telling the last administration that certain things being done were not right,” he declared, the late Olubadan had etched his name in the history of Ibadan and its chieftaincy.

While paying a condolence visit to the family of Oba Saliu Adetunji, Makinde stated that his administration will ensure that there will never be another controversy over who will be the next Olubadan.

He chastised those who stirred up controversy over the emergence of the next Olubadan, urging everyone to understand what Oba Adetunji stood for.

Makinde announced that the late Olubadan would be given a royal, befitting state burial, adding that his administration is committed to preserving the integrity and sanctity of the Ibadan traditional institution.

“Those who are using the death of the Olubadan to stir up controversy over who should be the next Olubadan or not; whether the case is in court or not, let me state unequivocally that the traditional institution of Ibadan must return to its original concept.”

“This will be the last time there is a debate over who should be installed as the next Olubadan.

“As a government, I am assuring Ibadan indigenes and lovers of Ibadan that I will uphold what the Kabiyesi stood for,” he said.

“Anyone who cares about himself should pay attention to it.” I know Baba is watching us and will support us in doing what is necessary to preserve the integrity and sanctity of Ibadan’s traditional institution.

“Baba stood for truth; if he didn’t, he wouldn’t have boldly told the previous administration that certain things they were doing were wrong.” Power is difficult to control unless one’s heart has been touched by God.

“Baba stood up to power and stood for truth on Ibadan’s traditional institution.” That’s what sparked the whole thing. Even though Baba is no longer with us, what he stood for lives on.

“Without acknowledging what Baba stood for, the history of the traditional institution in Ibadan will be incomplete.” What we can do as children is give Baba a royal and proper burial. That is exactly what the government will do.”

He chastised those who blamed him for not being present when the Olubadan joined his ancestors, claiming that he made sure Adetunji received the best medical care possible.

“When I heard about the death of the Olubadan, a lot of people said I should come home,” Makinde said. Those people are ignorant because I was talking to medical personnel the entire time Baba was sick, at the Infectious Diseases Centre in Olodo.

“I also gave them permission to allow Baba’s aides to accompany him.” Professor Alonge was assigned to provide me with daily reports, which I delegated to him. As a result, they are not the ones to advise us on how to care for our elderly. “We did what had to be done.”

One of the late monarch’s sons, Abdulroheem Adetunji, said in his remarks that his father stood for truth and urged Makinde to protect the Ibadan traditional institution.

This came as he prayed for God’s wisdom and guidance for the Oyo governor to make the right decisions in the coming days regarding the Olubadan controversy.

On Friday, the Federal Government will open a Digital Nigeria Centre (DNC) in Osun State.

The DNC project will be launched in Ilesa, Aregbesola’s hometown, by Minister of Communications and Digital Economy Isa Ali Ibrahim Pantami and his Interior counterpart, Rauf Aregbesola.

The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) announced on Tuesday that Osun State Governor Adegboyega Oyetola would be a Special Guest of Honor.

The DNC, formerly known as School Knowledge Centre, aims to increase ICT literacy among school teachers and students, provide a platform for accessing online educational resources, equip students with ICT skills, facilitate ICT adoption in teaching and learning, and increase pass rates in mathematics, English language, and other science subjects, according to the statement.

“This project is located at the Ijesa Muslim Grammar School, Ilesa, and is the first to be commissioned in Osun State since the project was renamed DNC,” the statement continued.

Traditionalists in Ogun State have vowed to take the state’s chieftaincy law, which governs monarchy’s installation and burial rites, to court.

On Monday, Governor Dapo Abiodun signed the bill into law. Oba Sikiru Adetona, the Awujale and Paramount Ruler of Ijebuland, started it in 2020.

The bill, titled “Obas, Chiefs, Council of Obas and Traditional Council law of Ogun State, Bill 2021,” aims to “respect human dignity and promote modernity” in traditional rulers’ installation and burial.

When a monarch dies, the law gives his or her family the power to choose the mode of burial.

While the bill was hailed as a “welcome development” by the Muslim community, traditionalists in the state opposed it, calling it a move to erode Yoruba cultures.

High Chief Ifasola Opeodu, the Oluwo of Iperu and Vice Chairman of Osugbo Remo Parapo, threatened to challenge the law in a competent court in Abeokuta yesterday.

“A dead man has no right under the law,” he argued.

Opeodu also stated that becoming a king is not by force, and that no Christian or Muslim should ever bury an Oba.

“A dead man has no legal rights,” he said. Any person who has died has lost all of his rights.

“The Obas’ right that they claim we are infringing on is invalid because a dead man has no right under the law.”

“Secondly, what we’re saying is that the Obaship institution is optional; we’re not forcing people to go, and we’re not saying they shouldn’t bury Obas; but, if you follow our argument, how can they now say Christians and Muslims should come and bury traditional heads?”

“If there is anything they do not want during their burials, they should say so, but traditionalists, not Christians, must bury Obas.”

“Why don’t they say that the monarchs should be installed by Christians or Muslims?” They aren’t saying anything about it. Without prejudice to traditionalists’ rights under customary law, the governor said.

“They’re all there,” says the narrator. We are not saying that Obas should not be buried, but they should not be buried by Christians or Muslims.”

Friends and relatives are in tears after a church building housing Salvation Ministries collapsed during a service on Tuesday evening.

According to reports, the newly constructed church building is located in Okpanam, Oshimili North local government area of Delta state.

While many people are still trapped in the rubbles, it has been reported that eight worshippers have been rescued unharmed, with over ten deaths reported, and at least four people have been rushed to the Asaba Specialist Hospital for medical attention.

During Tuesday evening service, the building, which was being used for the first time, reportedly collapsed at around 5:55 p.m.

The Secretary to the State Government, Chief Patrick Ukah, the State Commissioner for Health, Dr Ononye Mordi, a team of Red Cross officers, and fire fighters were on the ground on a rescue mission at the time of filing this report.

Chief Ernest Shonekan, according to Osun State Governor Adegboyega Oyetola, was a leader who will be remembered for his courage, selflessness, and patriotic service to the country during a difficult time.

Governor Oyetola also described Chief Shonekan as a “elder statesman” and “industrialist” whose exceptional qualities demonstrated a strong commitment to Nigeria’s peace, unity, and development both in and out of office.

On Tuesday, the Governor issued a condolence statement, which he signed and made available to his Chief Press Secretary, Ismail Omipidan.

While expressing sadness over the death of the former head of the Interim National Government, the Osun governor added that his death had left a gap that would take a long time to close.

“On behalf of my family, government, and people of Osun, I express my condolences to Chief Ernest Shonekan’s wife, his family, government, and people of Ogun State,” he said.

“I pray that God grant Chief Shonekan’s soul eternal rest and that God grant his beloved wife, family, and the people of Ogun State the strength to bear his loss.”

Chief Ernest Shonekan, a former Chairman of UAC Plc, died on Tuesday morning in Lagos. Between August 26 and November 17, 1993, he was the Interim National Government of Nigeria’s leader before being deposed by General Sani Abacha.
