Nnamdi Kanu Surrenders, Asks IPOB Supporters To Embrace Peace

0

The Leader of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu, has surrendered and called on the members of IPOB to embrace peace by availing themselves in the ongoing peacemaking process.
Kanu’s lead counsel, Ifeanyi Ejiofor, revealed the latest Kanu’s stand against the background of his IPOB violent activities in the Southeast. The Counsel spoke to newsmen in Owerri, Imo State capital yesterday after a visit to Kanu last Thursday at the Department of State Security (DSS), detention facility in Abuja.
He quoted Kanu saying that the peace process is important because enemies have been trying to cause disharmony regarding the struggle for the actualization of Biafra.
Ejiofor said: “Onyendu Mazi Nnamdi Kanu deeply appeals to UmuChineke to avail themselves of the peace initiative presently ongoing and not to be distracted anymore. He further implored all UMUCHINEKE to keep their eyes on the ball because enemies are struggling in vain to entrench disharmony.

“Onyendu reiterates that the ongoing interventions towards peaceful coexistence must be respected, encouraged and abided by. His call for unity among the entire UmuChineke at all levels, who believe in his peaceful message cannot be overemphasised.
“Further, Onyendu extends his warm regards to millions of his fans and followers who have equally remained consistently resolute and focused. He is convinced that the present situation will only last a while and he will emerge victoriously.
“He also used the opportunity to offer special prayers for me in commemoration of my birthday, as he believed most strongly that the future is crystal bright and holds many good tidings. Consistent with our usual request, we crave your relentless prayers and supplications to the Almighty Chukwuokike Abiama. It will surely end in Praises,” Ejiofor said.

Oladejo explains why the PDP is unable to rule Lagos

Mr. Olajide Adediran, also known as Jandor, and members of the Lagos4Lagos Group were welcomed into the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) by Senator Iyorchia Ayu, the party’s National Chairman, and some governors in Lagos. What are your thoughts on the events of that day?

We see what happened as part of the end-of-year and New Year’s festive activities bordering on entertainment. It demonstrates the Peoples Democratic Party’s lack of seriousness (PDP). The governors of the PDP traveled all the way to Lagos to hear a political non-starter. The same PDP governors who couldn’t stop their colleagues from defecting to the ruling party, the All Progressives Congress (APC), convened in Lagos for what I would call a circus. They had PDP leaders boasting that they would win Lagos despite the fact that they couldn’t even deliver their polling booths. They had people like Bukola Saraki, the former Senate President, who literally lost his deposit during the recent elections in Kwara State.

What happened last Friday was a non-event for us. They claimed to have a crowd, but we are aware that the crowd was rented. We’re aware that they gathered a large crowd from neighboring states. We believe that PDP states should be vigilant in ensuring that they are not shortchanged. I’d like to congratulate the gentleman, the young man, Jide Adediran, who is currently ecstatic because he received a very good payday. I’m sure he made a lot of money off the contributions of those PDP governors. We are not losing any sleep. It is not in their DNA to win anything, and this will have no impact on the state’s political situation in the upcoming elections.

The Lagos4Lagos made a strong statement during the rally, stating that they are taking over Lagos for the indigenes. What are your thoughts on this?

They should just wake up from this daylight nightmare, in my opinion. They’ve been saying the same thing about Lagos State being controlled by one man since 1999, and he’s remained invincible in their minds. It doesn’t get any better than this when it comes to democracy. If our party has been putting forward candidates that Lagosians find acceptable since 1999, candidates who have built on the achievements of previous governments since the advent of democracy in 1999, I believe Lagos can consider itself fortunate. All of the talk about elections being rigged is based on lame excuses from politicians who don’t know what they’re talking about. This state has nothing to offer the PDP. Let me just assure you that, despite all the challenges of the recent past, the APC still has a firm grip on Lagos State in the upcoming elections.

The issue of Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu has become an obsession for the likes of Bode George and his co-travelers, who wake up and come alive whenever the issue is brought up. Bode George has been threatening fire and brimstone, claiming that if Asiwaju runs for president, he will run as well. He has also stated that if Asiwaju is elected president, he will flee the country. We’ll be waiting for him and reminding him of his previous statements. He has a lot of options, and he could consider relocating to countries like Afghanistan and possibly Burkina Faso, which recently reverted to military rule. Did he make the most of the two opportunities he had as Governor of Ondo State and Chairman of the Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA)? So, when we talk about politics in the state and country, people like that should just be onlookers.

We’ve also noticed that they’ve been able to hire some journalists who are, at the very least, unethical and unprofessional in their approach to the business of journalism. It is no longer acceptable for some media outlets to be used as a mouthpiece for the opposition in the state. People should take a hard look at what goes on in the media with people like former governorship running mate bringing to the program where he will literally be speaking for the opposition party, PDP, as the anchor. Whoever seeks equity must do so with clean hands. We all witnessed the Dasukigate, in which he was a party to the twist of collecting N50 million to look after the media during the festive season. Has he been able to put that to rest? He ran for the PDP deputy governorship candidate against the late Senator, who spent the majority of his life as a fugitive who was never apprehended. When the senator died, we all saw the glowing tributes he wrote to his memory. Some people, I believe, should simply learn to respect themselves.

Do you think Jandor Jide Adediran’s defection to the PDP, with his Lagos4Lagos structures, is a serious threat to the APC?

Some politicians are amusing. You assume a great deal of strength from your safe haven, your home and constituency, and you see a largely paid crowd, which you take to be popular support. Whatever he referred to as a crowd has yet to be proven. He has never been elected to any office. Jandol appeared out of nowhere. He was a struggling journalist with LTV just a few years ago. Questions should be asked about how he came into the money he’s squandering while claiming he wants to run for governor. People should learn that some things have rules and procedures. He is unwilling to learn the rope, and it is clear that he has made numerous false starts, even in his transition to PDP, putting the cart before the horse.

He first declared his intention before traveling around the state to meet with PDP leaders. A well-informed politician would have approached the situation differently, meeting with the leaders first before announcing his intentions. But no one should be surprised because he declared the PDP dead and went there to resurrect it. I’d like to congratulate the PDP’s leaders on the election of Jandol as their new leader, who will breathe new life into the party. It’s also worth noting that key PDP leaders in the state, such as Ade Dosunmu, Jimi Agbaje, Babatunde Gbadamosi, and others, were not present at the event, which speaks volumes about the type of person we’re dealing with. It all boils down to the PDP’s governorship ticket. Mark my words: I believe prophets are still giving prophecies for the coming year; he (Adediran) will not vote for that ticket and will instead vote for a different party. You won’t hear anything about the Lagos4Lagos Movement for the next few months.

However, some of his supporters remain in the APC, and these individuals are likely to vote against the ruling party in the upcoming elections. Is the Lagos APC unconcerned about it?

Does he (Adediran) have the political clout and status of Senator Musiliu Obanikoro and a slew of other progressives in the past? That doesn’t matter. People will always clamor, regardless of whether or not the clamor is justified. APC has a solid foundation. We’ve taken up residence in every nook and cranny of this state. It’s not going to make a difference. That’s what I’m saying. We’ll continue to discuss this after the election, when we must have won by a landslide.

Some argue that his departure from the APC was justified due to claims of a lack of internal democracy and a level playing field within the party. How do you feel about it?

The young man is mostly perplexed. He isn’t the best person to judge what’s going on in our party. He couldn’t have been a member of the party for more than a year when he was largely rabblerousing without even taking the time to study the party’s constitution and structure. There has always been a level playing field for anyone who wants to be a part of our party since its inception. Even as we speak, a large number of people in various constituencies are already interested in joining the party. There would be no point in aspiring if they had no chance of getting the ticket on an equal footing. I believe it is a song written by people who have benefited from the party’s system at some point. I also want you to know that he was referring to the kind of consensus that the party’s constitution allows. Either we have an open primary or we agree to a consensus as part of the candidate selection process. Jandol is far too inexperienced to speak authoritatively about APC’s inner workings.
What accounts for the people’s loyalty and trust in the ruling party in Lagos State since 1999?

Nothing could be further from the truth; consistency is the result of years of hard work, a commitment to the people’s interests, and the ability to implement programs and policies that will ensure continuity. When we succeed as a party, it means that projects started by previous administrations will be completed, and people have a natural trust in anyone from the APC family at all levels of government to deliver. That is the foundation, and it is, of course, a well-founded party. We can be found in almost every home in the city, as well as in the market places. Our trust in you is not misplaced.

People have been wondering where Jide Adediran gets his money to fund his campaign, and there have been allegations that he is receiving financial support from some APC top brass. What would your reaction be if you were in this situation?

We also have a suspicion that he is being sponsored by people within APC. Because APC is such a wonderful family, the issue that led to its formation remains an albatross. A group of strange bedfellows came together to form the party, which is supposed to be progressive, but some of them haven’t been able to shed their old toga of thinking that is retrogressive. So, it’s not impossible that some party leaders, out of sheer indiscipline or perhaps out of envy for the APC’s leadership in the state, are really sponsoring people like Jandol to “rock the boat” as it were. But, regardless, we have our suspicions, and we know from what we’ve seen on the ground that he doesn’t have the resources on his own; that he has sponsors, but that won’t help him. When it comes to politics, it doesn’t matter if you have phony sponsors who won’t want to associate with you. It is meaningless, as we will soon discover. However, I believe he has gotten ahead of his initial sponsors by sleeping with the strangest fellow.

Apart from Jandor and his followers who have abandoned APC in favor of PDP, there are other disgruntled APC members. What are the leaders of the parties doing to make amends with them?

It is natural for people to feel aggrieved; even in a family and organization, groups and caucuses will form. It is not impossible for people to feel aggrieved because there are no members of a political party who are not ambitious. If you aren’t, you’re in the wrong line of work. As a result of these ambitions, there will undoubtedly be conflicts and disagreements, but as a party, we have the internal mechanisms in place to address these conflicts as they arise. It also behooves members to understand that when they agree to join a political party, they are relinquishing some of their rights and submitting to the party’s constitution, rules, and guidelines.

We don’t have the option of running for office as an independent candidate right now, which means that as a member of the party, you must submit to those rules and regulations and respectfully agree to the mechanisms in place to resolve conflicts rather than resorting to litigation, which is bad for the party. Despite some of our members’ bad behavior, our doors remain largely open, and we have welcomed them back several times whenever they see the light or purge themselves of their ground standing and sheer arrogance.

Have the internal mechanisms you mention brought peace to the Lagos APC?

Yes, because the State Chairman-elect, Pastor Cornelius Ojelabi, has been busy in the various local governments, especially since the last congresses, calling various parties in various constituencies and local governments to look at their areas of conflict and, by and large, he has made them understand that life and politics are give and take, and the important thing is for everyone to have a sense of belonging. That, I believe, is the main point of contention. As a result, we will have fewer crises as long as we are able to be fair to everyone. Allow me to reassure you that crises and conflicts have always been a part of our daily lives.

The APC will hold its primaries in the coming months, ahead of the elections next year. How do you plan to manage people’s ambitions in order to keep the APC from imploding?

PDP and opposition parties are praying for the APC to implode. Let me assure you that we have acrimonious primaries in Lagos State for a reason. This is a winning party; the PDP has no reason to hold acrimonious primaries because they will lose. They’ll have a hard time selecting candidates for various offices because they know they’ll lose. As a result, they have nothing to gain. In this state, the APC ticket is like picking a ticket and knowing you’ll win. And, despite the acrimonious primaries that have always arisen, we have always put our house in order before the elections. We always find a common ground to reach an agreement, and the upcoming election will be no exception. That is undoubtedly bad news for the opposition.

Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, the APC National Leader, visited President Muhammadu Buhari a few weeks ago to express his interest in running for the presidency in 2023. Tinubu has stated that he is still consulting on the issue…

It’s no longer his decision; it’s now ours. It’s also possible that Asiwaju will run for office. He’s not going to say no to the vast majority of people who want him to run for president. It is not in his record for him to refuse requests from the public.

Asiwaju Tinubu is based in Lagos, and it is expected that he will receive full support when he leaves the city. Are you expecting the same level of support from the rest of the party’s chapters?

We are enthralled by Asiwaju’s ambition. Allow me to provide some context. We all get into politics for one reason or another, so we should be ecstatic that we finally have someone willing to run. He is not being forced on us, and he is not being forced to run for President by circumstances. So, contrary to what some people may want to point out, the fact that he stated that it is his lifelong ambition is something I believe we should be proud of. Over 1,800 different groups across the country are currently clamoring for Asiwaju’s candidacy; clamoring for him to throw his hat into the presidential election ring.

Asiwaju is well-grounded, and he has built a network of goodwill and bridges across the country and between ethnic groups. Over time, Asiwaju has established himself as a man of the people, and he has known for a long time that the day would come when he would require the various people he has been able to assist. People refer to him as kingmaker, godfather, and Lion of Bourdillon, all of which are media inventions, but he never refers to himself by any of those titles. We simply refer to him as Asiwaju of Lagos, Jagaban Bogu, a former governor of Lagos and one-time Senator. So, if we look at issues that concern us as a nation, issues that concern the economy, where he is well-versed, issues that concern security, education, and good healthcare, I believe it is the right time for us to have a personality like Asiwaju for the presidency. We are very optimistic, and it will be enjoyable because the opposition will have a say, but the people will have their say.

9mobile Announces Future-CEO Initiative on International Day Of Education

Nigeria’s telecom provider, 9mobile, has announced its Future-CEO initiative in honor of this year’s International Day of Education, which aims to pique the interest of young secondary school students in business and leadership.

The initiative is in line with 9mobile’s CSR commitment to education and firm belief in supporting and providing self-discovery and expressive platforms for youths to thrive, according to the company.

Chineze Amanfo, 9mobile’s PR Lead, spoke about the initiative and stressed the importance of youths having unrestricted access to quality education.

“At 9mobile, we recognize the importance of education in shaping a child’s life,” she said. This informed our unwavering commitment to the educational system’s growth and development. 9mobile’s Future-CEO Initiative is yet another educational initiative aimed at inspiring students to strive for greatness in whatever field they choose.

“To carry out the initiative, 9mobile will work with the Lagos Education District II, which includes schools in the Ikorodu, Kosofe, and Shomolu LGAs. The selection process will begin with a speech competition on the topic of “What would you do if you had the opportunity to be the CEO of a major corporation for a day?”

As a reward for academic excellence, Ogun State Governor Dapo Abiodun announced yesterday that the two best graduating students from Olabisi Onabanjo University (OOU), Ago-Iwoye, Ogun State, will receive automatic employment.

The governor, who made the announcement at the institution’s combined 30th and 31st convocations, also gave each of the recipients one million Naira.

Iloka Peter Ebuka of the Faculty of Pharmacy and Awolumate Adebisi Fatima of the Faculty of Agricultural Economics are among the recipients.

Iloka received the overall best graduating student award for the 2020/2021 academic session, with a cumulative grade point average (CGPA) of 4.92, while Awolumate of the Department of Management and Rural Development received the overall best graduating student award for the 2019/2020 academic session, with a CGPA of 4.86.

According to the Vice Chancellor, Prof. Ganiyu Olatunji Olatunde, 6,257 graduates were produced at the combined convocation, with 55 making the first class list, 991 falling into the second class upper division, and 2,738 others falling into the second class lower division.

“I am pleased to inform you that the combined statistics of graduating students for the undergraduate programs from the 2019/2020 session is 6,257, comprising 55 first class, 991 second class upper division, 2,738 second class lower division, 1,925 third class degree, 278 pass degree, 135 unclassified degree (that is Medicine and Pharmacy), while for the postgraduate programmes, 719 graduating students will be announced,” Olatunde said.

Abiodun urged tertiary institutions to use research and innovation to come up with practical and long-term solutions to humanity’s problems.

He also encouraged youths, particularly students, to learn from and emulate the best graduating students in terms of learning and a work ethic.

The governor announced that the government had approved the construction of a 1,600-bed hostel at OOU to help students with their housing needs.

He stated that an Education Trust Fund would be established soon to assist in the provision of a long-term fund for infrastructural development at all levels of education.

The Fund, according to Abiodun, will help the state close a funding gap that has existed for years.

Suspected hoodlums burn down Obasanjo’s mango farm in Benue

0

In the Howe community, Gwer East Local Government Area of Benue State, suspected hoodlums razed a mango plantation reportedly owned by former President Olusegun Obasanjo.

According to reports, the 140-hectare farm was set ablaze as a result of possible disagreements with locals over compensation for land that was once owned by the state government.

On Saturday afternoon, the incident occurred.

Emmanuel Ortserga, the Chairman of the Gwer East Local Government, who confirmed the incident, said the fire was set deliberately by hoodlums.

According to Ortserga, four people have been arrested in connection with the fire, and investigators are still looking for more suspects.

“The hoodlums started the fire on the 139-hectare farm around 2 p.m. on Saturday, and nearly half of it is gone,” he said. It was obviously a sabotage attempt.

“It was strange that a fire broke out in the farm because it was properly secured, so it was obvious that it was sabotage.”

“We called a meeting of stakeholders and leaders to discuss the matter in order to apprehend the perpetrators, and by God’s grace, we have already apprehended four people, and the investigation is still ongoing to find more culprits.”

The incident was also confirmed by the Director of the State Fire Service, Donald Ikyaaza, and the Police Public Relations Officer, SP, Catherine Anene.

“Ibrahim and NYSC’s model of excellence”

0

By Toby Prince

Nigeria is truly a great country on the African continent. We are blessed in multiple dimensions. The natural gold treasures, buried beneath our alluvia soils; fertile farmlands and resourceful forests have made us an enviable nation in the face of others on the continent.

And to ice the cake, God Almighty has bestowed Nigeria with the best brains in virtually every profession. Our human resources compete and rank top anywhere in the world.

We are damn blessed! Our only nightmare is how to locate the few gifted brains in our midst. They are really very few in the flock. But once in a while, the Almighty God allows the dais to fall on some of them.

In today’s Nigeria, under the leadership of President Muhammadu Buhari, I have sighted another golden fish of leadership. He is Major General Shuaibu Ibrahim. I wouldn’t say, he is just a military officer; but a soldier of the finest breed. Gen. Ibrahim is aroundly gifted.

Gen. Ibrahim breaks the hardest of rocks to make impacts, anywhere national duty beckons on him. He is an avid reader of the ilk of Military historians; a consummate administrator and voracious reformist.

In both academics and soldering, I know Gen. Ibrahim as someone who has measured beyond expectations and very rapidly. And very profoundly, the Nasarawa state- born Army General is loyal and patriotic to his country. He is a passionate lover of anything progressive and Nigerian youths are his first destination.

So, destiny flung him to lead the NYSC. Since 2019, when Gen. Ibrahim was appointed DG- NYSC, the scheme has broken new grounds in redefining itself. After decades of its establishment, the NYSC has finally landed itself on the palms of someone who knows the intricacies of its rejuvenation. And I dare say, that persona is Gen. Ibrahim.

Amazingly, the NYSC we have known through the years, which depends on the FGN for payment of all its basic bills is now paying revenues generated from its investment ventures into Government treasury. And who has made it possible? It is General Shuaibu Ibrahim.

It may surprise many Nigerians, but Shuaibu Ibrahim has paid over N1billion into FGN’s TSA account between 2020 and 2021. It’s the first in the nearly five decades of the history of NYSC. I re-echo again, Ibrahim is my hero in leadership.

And why? Ibrahim used the intellectual assets of these young Nigerian graduates to establish and reactivate moribund investment ventures of the scheme. Some other leaders would have embezzled the money and still beggingly ask President Buhari to fund the NYSC.

Under Gen. Ibrahim, the NYSC has deployed her intellectual assets to think outside the box! I was so shocked to know he has changed the negative narratives of the scheme in just two years. Ibrahim is a soldier whose mind pulsates with innovative ideas. NYSC is not the first bus stop for Gen. Ibrahim! He was the pioneer Registrar, Nigeria Army University Biu (NAUB) in Borno state where laid the template for the now booming institution.

Why is the NYSC generating revenue for the FGN now? Its Gen. Ibrahim! Doubting Thomases can personally seek to find out from him or his management team. But through my personal investigations, the man saw a brilliant, but repressed future of Nigerian youths and removed the veil.

The NYSC is now flaunting a pantheon of rewarding investments and generating revenues. Is it the Niger or Anambra states NYSC Garment Factories; the NYSC Rice Mill in Ezillo or NYSC Bakery and Water Factory in Abuja’s Kubwa? Or should I talk about the Lagos state NYSC Feed Mill at Iyana lpaja, which is a beehive of commercial activities or NYSC’s romance with Nigeria’s best brains through its Entertainment Company Limited, which encompasses the productive NYSC National Band; NYSC National Troupe and the NYSC Movie? Those in doubt, can still ask additional questions and probe further with Corporate Affairs Commission ( CAC) on NYSC corporate investments.

Have Nigerians not noticed the blossoming NYSC Farms in Kwali, FCT, Saminaka, Kebbi Bauchi States? The scheme has keyed into President Buhari’s masterplan on food security through agricultural revolution and executing it in a manner most State Governors have failed to do in their states. All these innovations have become possible because Gen. Ibrahim who knows how to harness productive talents is on the driver’s seat . I want to believe, Gen. Ibrahim is one among President Buhari’s proudest of appointees.

The NYSC under Gen. Ibrahim has established a museum to preserve the scheme’s history. Also, the process of establishing the NYSC’s Radio and Television has reached advanced stage. The Printing Press is Kaduna was commissioned on 21st January, 2022. This is the redefined face of NYSC as reconditioned by Gen. Ibrahim for you!

Elsewhere, in the Northwest and Southwest regions, the DG-NYSC has given a special boost to the scheme’s Skills Acquisition and Entrepreneural Development ( SAED) center, while work on the North-Central SAED center is actively pursued. Some Corps members who have passed through it in the last two years have become employers of labor. And Gen. Ibrahim plans to beef it, through an NYSC Trust Fund legislation from the National Assembly, which will offer passing out Corps members loans to fund their private businesses.

When COVID-19 attacked Nigeria in February 2020, the NYSC under the strict avant garde of Gen. Ibrahim were at the doorsteps of Nigerians to offer philanthropic services. For the first time, Corps members came out en masse for public sensitisation. It never stopped at it.

The NYSC also produced and distributed free of charge, facemasks, hand sanitisers and liquid soaps as part of their patriotic contributions to the national battle against COVID-19. It happened only under Gen. Ibrahim. We never saw the contributions of Corps members when Ebola struck us years back. Indeed, Ibrahim is a leadership genius. Other leaders at lower rungs in Nigeria should emulate
the DG-NYSC and his management team of competent professionals in human development for thinking outside the box.

Kebbi 2023: Understanding Malami and his traducers

0

By Suleiman Aliyu

I have a challenge with the kind of journalism practised in the country of late. This is so because it has become evident that objectivity has been completely eroded. To make matters worse, some supposed credible news platforms seem to have joined the bandwagon of fake news peddlers without recourse to their actions on the sensibilities of readers and stakeholders alike.

The news report by one popular news portal on the alleged plot to impose Abubakar Malami, the Attorney General of the Federation, as governorship candidate is fueling the Kebbi APC crisis is below the belt for the people of Kebbi state. It was an empathic display of ignorance by the reporter and the medium. I am tempted to question not just the source of information in the news; I would also question the editorial competence of the editor that sanctioned such a story in the first place.

To link Abubakar Malami to the crisis in the APC in Kebbi state is most uncharitable. It was neither here nor there, but again, I can guess that some elements who feel threatened that should Malami indicate interest in the Kebbi Gubernatorial elections, it would be difficult for him not to receive statewide support.

I will like to refer to the insinuation that Governor Atiku Bagudu has plotted to impose Abubakar Malami on the people of Kebbi state. This is a misnomer that must be corrected. In Kebbi state, it must be stated that politics of imposition does not stand. But instead, candidates with the proper understanding of the peculiarities of the state always have the upper hand. This is a fact.

The creation of a new faction by Senator Adamu Aliero in the state to impose a stooge is mainly responsible for the crisis in the state. Recall that the Senator Adamu Aliero faction attempted to commission a new state secretariat to undermine the party executives in the state. Party faithfuls and stakeholders rejected this.

The attempt was not in the interest of the state, but a personal one and it is expected that the governor won’t allow such to happen. Abubakar Malami has never been the reason. However, there is every indication that should Abubakar Malami indicates interest; he would be faced with little or no obstacle amongst the stakeholders in the state because of his towering credentials.

For some of us in Kebbi state, we know his strength and passion for the state. You can’t question his passion for the development of the state. You can’t also ignore his tremendous support for the developmental strides in the state in recent times.

Even though he hasn’t come out to indicate interest, there is so much anxiety in the camp of politicians who view his entrance as a stumbling block to actualising their ambition because Abubakar Malami is well-loved across the state.

I can say authoritatively that there are moves to bring Abubakar Malami into the race. However, he hasn’t given any concrete assurance. But the feelers are indicative that he might succumb to the pressure.

I can also say that all those that have indicated an interest in the 2023 governorship race in Kebbi state, Abubakar Malami stands tall in the lot in terms of experience, commitment to the development of the state and acceptance by the electorate. His leadership style has been commended across the state, and he is viewed as a worthy ambassador of the state.

The likes of Senator Ademu Aliero must realize that the interest of Kebbi State must come first. And ordinarily, there should not be any doubt or resistance if Abubakar Malami indicates interest in governing the state unless he wants to tell us that there is another better candidate that the people of Kebbi state are not aware of.

Unless those against Abubakar Malami also want to feign ignorance to what he represents and what the state stands to benefit with him as governor. So to link him to the crisis in the APC in the state is outright character assassination. This does not augur well for our sensibilities, and it must be discontinued.

This is on the heels that his kind of politics is such that the people of Kebbi state yearn. We know what we stand to benefit in terms of inclusiveness and sustainable growth and development. This fact resonates across the state and why there has been tremendous pressure on him to indicate interest.

Going back to that online news, I think the news medium should undertake further research on the politics of Kebbi state. They should not rely on desk research; they should visit Kebbi state to feel the pulse of the eagerly expectant people for the day Abubakar Malami would indicate interest.

They would realize that such a famous personality cannot be imposed on the people, but rather gifted to the people. And suppose the governor tends to support Abubakar Malami to succeed him as governor. In that case, that is not an imposition, but rather a display of love for the people of Kebbi state because Kebbi would be in safe hands under an Abubakar Malami as governor.

For emphasis sake, I wish to reiterate that Abubakar Malami is by no means connected to the crisis in the APC in Kebbi State. As a fact, he has not been known to be meddlesome in the political process in the state. Maybe his offence might be that he is famous for his good deeds and commitment to the development of the state for several years, even before he was appointed Attorney General of the Federation.

We can’t count his numerous contributions to the state in his private capacity. And he did all of that not for any selfish reason but the mere fact that it is his nature to see Kebbi state progress for the benefit of the Kabawa people.

I must also advise all those that have taken to plots to discredit him in the papers to desist from such endeavours. Instead, they should join hands with all well-meaning Kebbi indigenes to continue pressuring him to indicate interest in governing the state.

There is no doubt that Abubakar Malami is a courageous man and one whose antecedent speaks volumes of service to humanity. And who would not be proud of such an individual whose impact has been felt across the state for several years without holding any political office.

It must not be a crime to be loved by your people. It should be a plus, and therefore no amount of smear campaign can succeed in turning the tide against him should he indicate interest in the Kebbi state governorship race.

At this point, his traducers must rest or change tactics. And not even resorting to using supposed credible news mediums in the country can change anything; after all, as they say, all politics is local. The Malami we know is for the interest of the state and never against the interest of the state. The supposed news medium must do well next time to verify the information at their disposal before going to press at the risk of losing its credibility entirely at the end of the day.

The Kabawas are waiting in earnest for that day when Abubakar Malami would accept their overtures.

2023: Northern group endorses Amaechi as Buhari’s successor

0

The Coalition of Northern Youth for Good Governance (CNYGG) has endorsed Minister of Transportation, Rotimi Amaechi, to succeed President Buhari’s successor in 2023.

According to the group, Amaechi is best man to sustain President Buhari’s momentum of diversification and economic reform.

The Northern youths threw their weight behind the former Rivers State Governor at a press conference on Monday in Abuja.

Although Amaechi is yet to formally declare his intention to contest for the country’s most-coveted position, the coalition said he is the most qualified among other eminent Nigerians.

In his address, National Coordinator, Comr. Bilal Dakiyak, said Amaechi ticks all the boxes.

Dakiyak noted that at 56, Ameachi can not be considered as too old or too young and does not have the burden of old age-related health challenges associated with some aspirants.

He added that Amaechi is experienced having served as state parliament member, governor and currently in the Federal Executive Council as a Minister.

The northern youths said he is conversant with what the country needs and as an appointee of President Buhari, he is in tune with the vision of the incumbent and would therefore be effective in continuing with all the laudable policies and projects that are in place with the capacity to advance them to the next logical phase.

The group further said that Amaechi has the national spread and boosts impressive achievements as transport minister.

While calling on Amaechi to enter the contest for the APC Presidential race, the group urged the ruling party to narrow its search to the former Rivers State Governor.

Read full statement below:

Gentlemen of the press, we are pleased that you honoured our invitation to this all-important press conference at which we will x-ray aspects of the state of our nation, particularly as they pertain to the 2022 General Elections.

A cursory review of topical issues in the country today will give the impression that things have gone horribly wrong for the nation. This of course is underpinned by the frequent reports of security breaches, communal crisis, violent crimes amongst others. However, if one critically and dispassionately assess the situation, it will become glaring that what is at play is the ubiquity of new and social media that has ensured that nothing go unreported – this is what gives the impression that the country is in a meltdown.

The reality is that the government of President Muhammadu Buhari has done much. It is an administration that has been positively disruptive as it has dismantled the old ways of business as usual and its place entrenched a regime of accountability, putting systems and institutions, as well as massive infrastructural development ahead of individual interest. There are other financial indicators that those that want to paint the government bad usually gloss over while they dramatize and play up the challenging aspects of our national life – for instance critics never play up the statistics for PoS transactions and the volume of money that exchange hands on the e-commerce platform; impoverished people will not be able to carry out the volume of transactions involved in these instances and these show persistent upwards trends.

President Buhari, having set the country on the course of diversification and economic reform, must be succeeded by someone that is able to sustain the momentum upon the expiration of his tenure come May 29, 2023. The process for the selection and eventual election of this successor in the 2023 General Elections is already on. Scores of eminently qualified Nigerians have indicated interest for this job such that the ball is now in the court of Nigerians of all persuasions to decide who gets the job. Before the electorates vote, however, this list of contenders must be pruned down such that each political party has the one candidate envisaged in law.

For the purpose of continuity, the Coalition of Northern Youth for Good Governance has a preference that the All Progressive Congress (APC) continues its run in office. That way Nigeria will not suffer losses that arise because of the government of different political party deciding not to press ahead with the policies and projects inaugurated by the outgoing government. It is on record that Nigeria has lost much to the lack of continuity in government.

We have consequently critically assessed the eminent Nigerians that have indicated their interest to contest for the office of the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria and have zeroed in on the Honourable Minister of Transport, Mr. Rotimi Amaechi. He deserves succeed President Buhari and for good reasons.

Mr. Rotimi Ameachi straddles the age divide as he is between those that are considered too old for the job or too young and inexplicably inexperienced. At 56 years, he is easily the connection between the youth and the older generation. As a bonus, while we concede that it is God that gives good health, Ameachi does not have the burden of old age-related health challenges that Nigerians are concerned about in some candidates.

The Minister of Transportation has been in the state parliament, been a state governor and is currently part of the Federal Executive Council as a Minister, which has afforded him the requisite experience for the job. He is conversant with what the country needs and being an appointee of President Buhari, he is in tune with the vision of the incumbent and would therefore be effective in continuing with all the laudable policies and projects that are in place with the capacity to advance them to the next logical phase.

In terms of having a national outlook, Mr. Amaechi is well grounded in this department. He is a friend of the north in addition to having the right connection with the south-west, south-east and his south-south geo-political region. He is a fair-minded person and will be kind to all Nigerians, especially when he has repeatedly proven that has no religious discriminations.

He has weathered the expected crisis that popped up during his political career and has thus proven that he is able to absorb the pressure that comes with the job of the President. During this career so far, we have also noted him to be a man that always stands on the side of equity.

We will not end this briefing without touching on the feat that Mr. Amaechi has achieved with his laudable reforms and performance in the transport sector. If as a Minister he was able to translate President Buhari’s agenda to reality on the scale which he did one can only wonder the extent to which he will perform when given the opportunity to pilot the affairs of Nigeria.

It is on this note that we are calling on Mr. Rotimi Amaechi to enter the contest for the APC Presidential race with all the seriousness required for the task of continuing from where President Buhari’s tenure will end. He must ignore the antics of detractors that have been discouraging him from taking on this task.

We urge the APC to narrow its search for a presidential candidate to Rotimi Amaechi while urging the other aspirants to throw their support behind him.

The Centre for Social Justice, Equity and Transparency (CESJET) has applauded the Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice for introducing institutional reforms in the war against corruption and recovery of loots.

The centre, which made this known today at a press conference in Abuja, said in the last six years, the AGF has embarked on several initiatives to ensure the smooth functioning of government.

In his address, Executive Director, Comrade Isaac Ikpa, said the ministry, under Malami, has successfully tracked all assets recovered on behalf of the Federal Government by various law enforcement and anti-corruption agencies while developing the Whistle-Blowers’ Policy.

Through a trilateral agreement with foreign countries, Comrade Ikpa said looted funds have been recovered and returned back to Nigeria.

According to Ikpa, with the concerted effort of the Federal Ministry of Justice, public perceptions of the Muhammadu Buhari administration’s fight against corruption have improved tremendously.

The centre also said the Minister of Justice has consistently adhered to the rule of law, with transparency and accountability the hallmark of his ministry.

The Centre for Social Justice, Equity and Transparency, therefore, passed a vote of confidence on Malami, recommending a national honour for the country’s AGF.

Read full statement below:

The leadership of the Centre for Social Justice, Equity and Transparency holds this press conference to laud the efforts of the Honorable Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami, SAN, in institutionalizing reforms in the Federal Ministry of Justice.

We are delighted to mention that the Federal Ministry of Justice has embarked on several initiatives to ensure the smooth functioning of government through the effective discharge of its core functions in the last six years.

The Federal Ministry of Justice has ensured access to justice for all persons and the observance of the rule of law and due process by all MDAs. Prosecuting crimes against the State and defending civil cases on behalf of the Government was also given top consideration.

Ensuring close collaboration with stakeholders, government agencies, civil society and the international community to improve on justice delivery, and advising the government on its treaty obligations, in addition to other sundry services to the legal profession, were the hallmark of the Federal Ministry of Justice in the past six years.

We are aware that the Federal Ministry of Justice has been providing guidelines on international and local asset recovery regime, tracking of all assets recovered on behalf of the federal government by various law enforcement and anti-corruption agencies, and assisting the Federal Ministry of Finance in developing the Whistle-Blowers’ Policy.

It is indeed instructive to state that the Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami, has displayed uncommon courage since he assumed leadership of the Federal Ministry of Justice.

The whistle-blowing policy of the federal government provides us with such instances of how effective the Federal Ministry of Justice had been in the war against corruption. We also wish to state that following the launch of the Whistle-Blowing Policy, recovery of the looted fund increased with the personnel of Economic and Financial Crime Commission (EFCC), Independent Corrupt Practices (ICPC) and Other Related Offence Commission, Department of State Security, and other security agencies, on alert with available information.

As early as 2017, the whistle-blowing policy had yielded $151million and N8 billion in looted funds through the efforts of the Federal Ministry of Justice. This is indeed commendable and further emphasizes the disposition of the Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami, in ensuring that the Federal Ministry of Justice provides guidelines on international and local asset recovery regime.

We also wish to state that the outstanding successes recorded by President Muhammadu Buhari in international asset recovery could be a template for other African countries in the fight against corruption.

The various steps taken by the Federal Ministry of Justice in terms of legislative frameworks, the establishment of institutions and policy measures targeted at combatting corruption, Regional Corporation and ensuring good governance for the benefit of citizens are laudable.

In 2017, the signing of a trilateral agreement with Switzerland and the World Bank enabled the recovery of $322.515million. In 2020, a total sum of $311.7million was returned to Nigeria after signing another trilateral agreement with the USA and Bailiwick of Jersey.

Also, in 2020, 5.4million Euros was recovered in March, emanating from an agreement signed with Northern Ireland. The Federal Government was able to recover from the UK the sum of €4,214,017.66 connected to the family of James Ibori.

Under the guidance of the Federal Ministry of Justice, the Federal Government had developed the National Anti-Corruption Strategy and a guideline for smooth implementation of the strategy, which has five pillars; prevention of corruption, public engagement, ethical re-orientation, enforcement and sanction, and recovery and management of proceeds of crime.

Consequently, we are not surprised that Nigeria’s stand in the anti-corruption struggle has been adjudged to be recording tremendous success; a fact was confirmed by credible International organizations, including the United Nations Office of Drugs and Crimes (UNODC).

We reiterate once again that through the concerted effort of the Federal Ministry of Justice, public perceptions of the Muhammadu Buhari administration’s fight against corruption have improved dramatically, and this is a strong indication that the nation’s orientation towards understanding the challenges of fighting and addressing corrupt practices is changing for the better.

The Federal Ministry of Justice has also ensured the speedy dispensation of justice. This is also another commendable feat that must not go unnoticed. That the common man and woman on the street can get justice indicates that a lot has happened in the application of the criminal justice system in the country. This is also noteworthy that even with the coronavirus pandemic, notable reforms were introduced to ensure that the judicial system does not experience setbacks.

The Center for Social Justice, Equity and Transparency leadership indeed lauds these reforms in the Federal Ministry of Justice, which has been institutionalized through transparency and accountability, which is essentially the hallmark of the Federal Ministry of Justice under Abubakar Malami, SAN.

The adherence to the Rule of Law is also another area worthy of mention in the sense that the Federal Ministry of Justice. On record, the Attorney General and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami, has lived up to his billing as a Senior Advocate of Nigeria by advancing sound legal opinions and interpretations in the judicial landscape. This, much in our considered opinion, has assisted the federal government in adherence to the rule of law at all times.

We also wish to state in unequivocal terms that under the jurisdiction of Abubakar Malami, the transparency in the recovery of assets has been outstanding given the collaboration with various jurisdictions in its efforts to recover stolen assets stashed abroad. Through this means, the country has continued to make significant progress in preventing and combating corruption, blocking leakages and recovering our stolen assets.

We are also aware that under Abubakar Malami, Nigeria is implementing the Justice Sector Reform Strategy covering issues such as International Cooperation Mechanisms, Mutual Legal Assistance and reform of the Criminal Justice System.

Recommendations:

The Centre for Social Justice, Equity and Transparency wishes to state that the Attorney General and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami, has displayed an unwavering commitment in the war against corruption in Nigeria through the instrument of his office.

The various indices in this regard speak positively on the institutional reforms introduced in the Federal Ministry of Justice.

In the light of the above, we recommend the Attorney General of the Federation for the conferment of national honours in reward for his efforts in the war against corruption, strengthening the mechanism for the speedy dispensation of justice across the country.

We also recommend that it won’t be out of place if the Attorney General of the Federation is considered for a Nobel Peace Prize for Transparency and Accountability and an unalloyed commitment to the war against corruption in Nigeria.
