That NYSF Trust Fund and our future

0

By Tolulope Adebayo

I was elated by a piece of news I stumbled on recently about the proposed National Youth Service Corps Trust Fund (NYSC-TF). Initially, I thought it was the usual government rush in proposing policies to attract media attention without any clear cut direction regarding benefits that are accruable to the nation. But I was wrong.
This was different hence my excitement. Brilliant is an understatement because of the positives that could be derived if the proposed NYSC Trust Fund is appropriately implemented. We are looking at a potential game-changer in addressing youth unemployment in the country, and for the first time, I saw hope for this country.

The future of young Nigerians has finally been considered in proposing a trust fund that would serve as that medium where young Nigerians can actualize their potentials and enrich the economic space with businesses and innovations that would change things for the better.

The impact would be felt across the board, so much so that Nigeria would be better for it. This is indeed a plus for the promoters of this laudable initiative that caters for young Nigerians involved in the mandatory service year and even after they have concluded their service year.

To put it simply, any country that does not initiate measures towards harnessing the potential of its youthful population is doomed. Such a country would continue to live on the brinks till it collapses because the strategic importance of the youths to socio-economic development cannot be overemphasized.

It is a well-known fact that the youth of any country is a great asset. They are indeed the country’s future and represent it at every level. The role of youths in nation-building is more important than you might think. In other words, the intelligence and work of the youth will take the country on the pathway of success. As every citizen is equally responsible, the youth is too. They are the building blocks of a country.
The youth can bring social reform and improvement to society. We cannot make do without the youth of the country.

Furthermore, the country requires their participation to achieve the goals and help take the country towards progress. If this remains factual, then it behoves the government to initiate policies and programmes to help the youth of our country achieve their potential.

The NYSC-TF perfectly fits the narrative of addressing unemployment, youth restiveness and other issues that bring about socio-economic stagnation and with the benefit of hindsight, one could imagine the gains that would have been recorded in the country if this policy had been introduced some years back. I recall during my service year in 2016, we had amongst us brilliant chaps that were innovative and industrious but with no support to take their enterprise to the next level, and I suppose most of them have caved into the pressure of making ends meet in the society and the elusive search for white-collar jobs.

I also recall that the reward for exceptional performance during our service year was automatic employment into the civil service, and that was it. Emphasis was not placed on harnessing the entrepreneurship potentials of this subset of active and energetic people burning alive with ideas and innovations that can move mountains.
I am glad that with the coming of the NYSC-TF, the country’s leadership seems to have woken up from its slumber. As much as I will commend the leadership of the NYSC, particular emphasis must be made on the critical support provided by the Muhammadu Buhari administration through the Federal Ministry of Youth and Sports Development.

We might not fully grasp the endless opportunities inherent in the NYSC-TF yet. From what I have read, it is guaranteed to churn out entrepreneurs who would create jobs and take the country to the next level. And some of us could only wish that such initiatives were introduced during our time. Nonetheless, it is a good one for every young person in Nigeria.

The multiplier effect of this brilliant initiative would be felt across the board. And the country would experience tremendous improvement in our socio-economic wellbeing. That this is also coming when countries are looking at creative ways to bring about meaningful development is a testament that a lot is going on within the administrative and policy drive of the government.

Governments must do more to ensure young people have the opportunities and tools necessary to succeed. NYSC Trust Fund has all it takes for the government to change the narrative. The future is indeed bright, and I urge all young people in Nigeria to see this as that golden opportunity to maximize towards translating their hopes and aspirations into tangible realities.

Nigeria’s burgeoning youth population provides a huge social, economic and political capital required to drive the nation’s development. This much should guide our efforts towards seeing to the actualization of this laudable initiative. The National Assembly must show commitment in ensuring that the bill is passed into law.

I can only imagine the enormous benefits that would accrue to the country when the NYSC-TF takes shape. I can only imagine the smiles on the faces of our teeming youthful population whose burgeoning spirit is ready to take flight given the right atmosphere. And the NYSC-TF is indeed positioned to provide that atmosphere that is required.

I urge all stakeholders to lend their voices to this laudable initiative because we all would be beneficiaries in one way or the other. The urgency now requires all hands to be on deck as we begin the march towards sustainable growth and development. This is indeed a victory for every young person in Nigeria.

Yahaya Bello: Why a new Nigeria is possible

0

By Gideon Unazi

The Yahaya Bello phenomenon is blowing across the country. The effect is massive, young people are excited, and they have converged in large numbers to push for the actualization of an ambition that is hinged on taking Nigeria to the next level. I can say that the time is ripe for a new Nigeria. The individual that is positioned to lead this movement is Yahaya Bello.

The unity of young Nigerians towards his aspiration is tremendous. From the north to the south, from the east to the west, the message is the same-a new Nigeria is possible with Yahaya Bello. I recall at one of such gatherings; you could feel the pulse of the people in the sincerity of heart and purpose. I can only equate such excitement to a movement in the quest to make Nigeria great again.

The question thus is who is Yahaya Bello, and why does he command such large followership amongst the teeming youths in the country? Your guess is as good as mine. He is the White Lion and the solid rock on which the country’s teeming youths have built their hopes and aspirations for a new and better Nigeria. Quote me anywhere.

His dexterous display of leadership reminds one of the tenets of developmental politics as seen in the first republic. The rot in Kogi state before he came onboard was mainly underreported. People were used to saying Kogi was an eyesore, but they forgot other aspects that made the state a mess.

Those institutionalized patrons of the commonwealth of the state still can’t believe their eyes. They mocked him just like some are doing with his presidential ambition in recent times, and that is what will happen to those who have discountenanced his presidential ambition.

Just like a wind, he churned out policies and initiatives across the state. He was not afraid to step on toes. He was not scared to do the right thing. He was not afraid to call the bluff of those who think as a young man he was not in the position to make life meaningful for the generality of Kogi people.

For the records, Kogi state is no longer that enclave where a few would constitute themselves into institutions that decide who gets what and how. Today, Kogi is in a state of absolute bliss, courtesy of the fearless posture of Governor Yahaya Bello.

I like to look at the state as a reflection of Nigeria, which needs a courageous leader who would confront those obstacles that hinder our progress. And Yahaya Bello fits this bill. We are aware of how he stood his ground on some critical decisions that turned things around in the state.

I have no reservations that Nigeria needs a leader like Yahaya Bello. His style of politics was unique hence the feats he recorded in governance in the Kogi state. The summation of Yahaya Bello is that of when focus meets commitment. This is what Nigeria needs at this critical point of our existence.

The issues that have held us down are not different from what he met on the ground in Kogi state. I take every opportunity to salute his courage in leadership. I do not doubt that his aspiration to lead this country is borne out of a burning passion for setting the country on a high pedestal in terms of socio-economic advancement.

He might not be a heavyweight name because he doesn’t play to the gallery. His type is rare because of the emphasis on putting issues in proper perspectives. I can bet that Nigerians would be surprised to learn about some of the challenges he faced in reclaiming Kogi state from the cankerworms that fed fat from the rot in the system.

The same can be said of Nigeria, and it is imperative that we get it right in 2023. And Yahaya Bello has what it takes to put things right should he actualize his political ambition. Nigerians must come to terms with the fact that the race is not for the weary but for the strong-hearted—the lionheart with the courage to challenge our adversaries without a blink.

The race is for that individual who is not afraid to call a spade a spade. That individual who knows no tribe or religion but one Nigeria. That individual who would match his words with action. That individual who is ready to withstand the rigours inherent in our plurality. That individual who would unite Nigerians more than ever before. That individual who would place a premium on every human life in Nigeria. That individual who would churn out policies and plans that would stand the test of time. That individual that Nigerians would be proud of, and that individual who would reclaim our pride of place amongst the commit of Nations.

I can go on non-stop regarding the capacity and the desire of Yahaya Bello to change things around in this country and make the country great again. He is a reincarnation of the focused leadership of the first and second republics in Nigeria. His ideas about governance are the politics of development. This is why every Nigerian desirous of a new Nigeria with endless possibilities should rally support for the Yahaya Bello presidency.

They say he is young and inexperienced. I say age is nothing but a number. They say he doesn’t have what he takes to lead Nigeria. I say his credentials are intimidating, and his heroic exploits in Kogi State are there for all to peruse.

We must begin the march towards national rebirth with Yahaya Bello, enough of the recycled hands that have been in our faces for donkey years and yet, the country is still comatose. We need change, which is what Yahaya Bello offers for Nigeria. You might not like his face. You can also detest his boldness, but you cannot deny that with Yahaya Bello, a new Nigeria is possible.

X-raying Buhari’s rule of law mantra

0

By Philip Agbese

“The rule of law is the basis for any democracy. And without the rule of law in any democracy, you have chaos” –Meles Zenawi, Ethiopian soldier and politician.

Nigerians are exciting lovers of equity, justice and the rule of law. It is the reason, Nigeria’s statute books are replete with laws, which are periodically reviewed. The campaign for justice among Nigerians usually gain ascendency under democratic settings in the country. In the nation’s recent history, ex-President Umaru Yar’Adua was a strong advocate of justice and the rule of law.

The then Attorney -General and Minister for Justice, Chief Mike Kaase Aondoakaa, SAN, was the poster boy of the rule of law mantra under the Yar’Adua Presidency. After the expiration of that government, the rule of law seemed to have gone extinct to the angst of Nigerians. Does it therefore mean, the rule of law no longer exists in Nigeria? The answer is No!

Today, the emphasis on the rule of law is replicated by the administration of President Muhammadu Buhari. From the onset, President Buhari left no Nigerian in doubt about his avowal to run a Government of Nigeria premised on the words and letters of the rule of law.

President Buhari, like the retired Associate Justice of the Supreme Court of America, Justice Sonia Sotomayor clearly discerned and firmly believed, “… in the rule of law as the foundation for all of our basic rights.” He has been a stickler to this dictum in his leadership of Nigeria.

This mindset pulsated President Buhari’s advocacy and declaration in his inaugural day speech May 29, 2015 that; “The Federal Executive under my watch will not seek to encroach on the duties and functions of the Legislative and Judicial arms of government. The law enforcing authorities will be charged to operate within the Constitution…The judicial system needs reform to cleanse itself from its immediate past…It is only when the three arms act constitutionally that government will be enabled to serve the country optimally and avoid the confusion all too often bedeviling governance today.”

There is no gainsaying, President Buhari has walked his talk on the “Rule of Law” mantra, in his near seven years reign in Nigeria’s Aso Rock, the seat of power. Unlike his predecessors, Nigerians have experienced Mr. President’s due recognition and observance of the constitutional independence of the other arms of government in a democracy. His sermons are always centered on the non-interference with the operations and rights of other arms government as enshrined in the Constitution of Nigeria. That’s why he does not wear the toga of President and leader of his Party.

Buhari is tenaciously upholding the sanctity of the rule of rule, even where the people’s offensive indulgence into lawlessness bruises the pride of nation and defames or undermine his Presidency. And the enabler of Buhari’s towering heights in the compliance with the rule of law and the redefinition of the Nigerian Justice system is the current Chief Law Officer of the Federation.

The Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Barrister Abubakar Malami, SAN is law personified. He has fruitfully proven his mettle as an effective chief law officer of the federation. He has created innovative paths in ensuring the smooth administration of justice in Nigeria for effective governance based on the tenets of law as practiced by all democracies globally. He is strengthening old laws and engineering new legislations in areas where there are none.

Abubakar Malami is a translucent compliant with the rule of law. His office is active in offering genuine legal advice to government and appropriate interpretations of legislations in resolving thorny national issues. Minister Malami is silent or less vociferous about his assignments, but has many pluses to his credit. The justice minister has operationalized grandeur institutional reforms in the Nigerian Judiciary which have placed Nigeria in top ranking among nations in Africa attuned to the rule of law.

Barrister Malami has instituted solid sector reforms which have placed the Nigerian justice system on the path of expeditious dispensation of justice for the benefit of Nigerians. The Ministry of Justice has formulated multiple policies, and through the executive, it has sponsored fresh legislations to close up gulfs in existing laws and it has been relentless in offering appropriate legal advices in the prosecution of civil and criminal cases which have saved the FGN several trillions of naira in judgment debts these past six years.

Malami’s reforms in the justice sector reflects in the strengthening of the laws of anti-graft agencies, which have repositioned them for optimum performance. The result is the amazing volume of cases investigated and prosecuted by the EFCC and ICPC under the Buhari Presidency.

Under Minister Malami, Nigeria has domesticated legislations and international agreements, which have led to the passage and signing of Mutual Assistance in Criminal Matters Bill 2019 by President Buhari. And through Malami’s professional guidance, Nigeria has signed Agreements and MOUs with numerous countries to ginger international cooperation for the investigation, tracking, freezing and return of stolen assets which is actively operating.

In the area of prisons, the Minister of Justice has constituted a committee with the mandate of formulating policies and strategies for prison decongestion throughout the country. This is besides, the multiple legislations it has instituted before the National Assembly to backup the decongestion of prison formation process. The committee is working assiduously in clearing the backlog of cases of awaiting trials and those who have spent years in incarceration because of failure to pay minor fines imposed on them by the courts.

The Ministry of Justice under Malami has equally prosecuted various civil and criminal cases diligently. And through its sheer expertise, it has saved the FGN trillions of naira that would have been expended on judgment debts.

Justice delayed is justice denied. Nigeria has sustained a culture of interminable duration of cases before the courts. Therefore, Barrister Malami is working hard to end the reign of limitless court trials by defining a reasonable time-frame for justice delivery in Nigeria. What he is contemplating is restricting or pegging a 12-month time limit on the hearing of criminal cases from the High Court to the Supreme Court. Similarly, the succor to Nigerians will also extend to hearing and conclusion of all civil cases within 15 months from the day of its initiation across all the tiers of courts.

The initiation of the whistle blower policy of the Federal Government among other adjudgments effected in Nigeria’s legal system under the Buhari Presidency have strengthened the Nigerian judiciary. Therefore, delivering to Nigerians, an effective, trustworthy and flawless legal system are Malami’s salient reforms in the Judicial sector. Surely, it is another legacy, the Buhari Presidency will bequeath to Nigerians when its tenure eventually runs out in 2023.

Barrister Abubakar Malami will be remembered in Nigeria’s history as an incorruptible law officer who stood and defiantly defended the Constitution of Nigeria. He is likened to the likes of Justice Brenda Marjorie Hale, the Baroness Hale of Richmond, who served as the President of the Supreme Court of the United Kingdom (2017-2020) and famed for defending the Constitution. Malami is also famed for defending and protecting the Constitution at all times.

Ambassador Buratai, a national security asset, Nigerian envoy to Congo Iliya , Adekojo laud former COAS

0

Nigeria’s Ambassador to Congo, Deborah Nana, has described the country’s former Chief of Army Staff, Lt Gen. Tukur Yusufu Buratai (rtd) as a national asset.

This was as renowned project consultant, businesswoman, philanthropist and singer, Engr. Dr. Funmilayo Waheed-Adekojo hailed the exploits of the nation’s current Ambassador to the Republic of Benin Republic.

The pair recently joined other distinguished Nigerian women to celebrate the former COAS at a book presentation in his honour in Abuja.

Amb. Deborah Samaila Iliya, the wife of late Army general, Samaila Iliya, was the chairlady of the event while Adekojo was the co-presenter.

In her remarks, the envoy said Buratai is the nation’s greatest asset due to his strategic endeavors for peace and security.

She further described the former Army Chief as a distinguished gentleman and rare enviable leader.

She said, “Strategic leadership today has played an ever critical role in shaping and tackling global events, most especially the security challenges affecting our nation. Leadership is the capacity to translate vision into reality, it is the art of communication; it is about action not position. This book draws deep into the qualities; leadership, challenges, overall wealth of experience required to lead successful administration.

“General Tukur Yusuf Buratai (rtd), the Former COAS and Current Ambassador to  Benin Republic, has proven to be a distinguished gentleman, rare enviable leader, who in recent times can be best described as one of the nation’s greatest assets in the strategic endeavors for the peace and security of our great nation. When you are a leader, your utmost success is all about growing others; this is what we are celebrating today.

“I would like to take this opportunity to appreciate the author, a celebrated political analyst, seasoned author and security commentator, Best Agbese, for his laudable efforts in further immortalizing his laudable leadership, determination and sacrifices of Gen. Buratai and other military personnel through this great book. It serves as an inspiration to emerging leaders and to many at large”.

On her part, Adekojo said Nigerian women should reciprocate Buratai’s gesture as COAS when he saw the creation of the Nigerian Army Female Corps and ensured equality for women and made sure that many female officers and soldiers got their promotion as at when due.

She also said women shouldn’t only pray for the Armed Forces but devise ways to support the Federal Government in the fight against banditry, kidnapping and terrorism.

The founder of Funmi Ayinke Foundation, however, assured that she will continue to use her foundation to support the non-kinetic approach in the war against insurgency by lifting many youths and vulnerable women out of poverty.

The philanthropist, also known as Funmi Ayinke, said Nigerians should expect more trailblazing performances from Amb Buratai in the diplomatic world.

Mai Mala Buni: The Bridge over troubled waters

0

By Chijioke Ejiofor

By June 2020 Nigeria’s ruling party, the All Progressives Congress (APC) was working hard to reconcile some members who had reservations on the outcome of its primaries for the 2019 General Elections.

The issue and the resultant interplay led to the unfortunate loss of four states-Zamfara, Bauchi, Oyo and Adamawa in the 2019 governorship elections and eventually climaxed with the dissolution of the National Working Committee (NWC) led by the then Chairman Comrade Adams Oshiomhole.

Such was the level of discontent in the party that the normally taciturn President Muhammadu Buhari waxed voluble in recounting the challenges the party faced on the day of the dissolution of the NWC and appointment of a Caretaker Committee to take its place pending the election of new officers for the party.

President Buhari noted at that meeting: “There are also other associated disputes as to the legitimacy or otherwise of holders of certain national offices of the party. The party is also contending with judicial claims and counter-claims, orders and counter-orders and indeed, judgments and counter-judgments that are predominantly at cross-purposes.

“Confronted with these issues, it is obvious that the fortunes of the party are currently in jeopardy, administration of our party is becoming impossible and there is consequently an urgent need for intervention to immediately arrest further drifts and internal wrangling which may lead to total disintegration.

“What we see clearly emerging, is that we are beginning to self-destruct. This, my dear party members, is not just regrettable but utterly gut-wrenching.”

The President’s comments reflected the stark reality and to reunite the party and reposition it to deliver the qualitative governance it had promised Nigerians during the general elections of 2019, an interim management team was needed.

The lot fell on Mai Mala Buni, the Governor of Yobe State to head the rescue team, which included top party leaders including two other state governors.

The choice of Buni was no accident. It was a strategic move aimed at uniting the divided factions of the party. Interestingly, Buni as National Secretary of the party from its inception in 2014, understood well its strengths, weaknesses and potential. More than that, he was well respected by members of the party across the country with whom he had over the years, forged lasting friendships.

This was evident in his comments after accepting to execute the onerous task thrust upon him.
He noted on that occasion:
“I know the party very well. It’s all about doing justice to every member of the party because without justice there won’t be peace. It is all about team play.

“I am a team player; I have a capable team that can work with me. If you don’t manage crisis, obviously crisis will manage you. So, I won’t allow any crisis to fester henceforth.”

Indeed, with the passage of time, Buni working adroitly and strategically with other members of the Caretaker Committee, has doused the tension within the party, restored loyalty to it, and entrenched justice and fairplay, which has not only repositioned the APC for the challenges ahead of the 2023 elections but has also endeared the party to Nigerians.

It is a measure of Buni’s effectiveness as the interim head of the party that a lot of the members of the party who felt aggrieved and shortchanged by the outcome of the party’s primaries and left the party after the 2019 elections, have returned to the party.

That is not all. Under Buni’s stewardship, the APC has multiplied its membership, outstripping the PDP as the largest political party on the African continent. The party’s recent registration exercise where it recorded a 40 million plus membership underscores this fact.

The effect of the transformation of the APC under Buni is not lost on Nigerians and was instrumental in them joining the party enmasse. And it is not just at the grassroots that there’s a ferment of interest in the party. The nation’s elite usually skeptical about the ability of Nigerian political parties to engineer national development, are flocking to the APC.
In the last one year, virtually all the political parties in the country have lost their members to the APC following Buni’s purposeful leadership of the party.

The PDP has been worst hit. At the last count, two of its governors re-elected to office in 2019, have defected to the APC. The first to ditch the party was David Umahi of Ebony State who joined the APC six months after Buni took over as caretaker chairman. Next to go was Ben Ayade, Governor of Cross River State.

Only recently, Azubuike Ihejirika, a retired general and former Chief of Army Staff, also defected to the APC. Ihejirika’s defection came after two leading PDP members, Senator Iyiola Omisore, a former Deputy Governor of Osun State, and Otunba Gbenga Daniel, a former Governor of Ogun State, joined the APC from the PDP. This development has undoubtedly weakened the PDP while strengthening the APC as it plans to consolidate power via the 2023 general elections.

It seems though that there are individuals working to scuttle this dream. These people are working assiduously to undermine the efforts of Buni and his team at the caretaker committee. A key subterfuge deployed by these faceless characters has been to hide behind the call for the convention of the party to hold at the time of their choosing.

Last year, a group of 100 individuals purportedly APC members, and ostensibly acting in the interest of the party but more clearly acting out the script of the enemies of the party, went to court asking for the dissolution of the Buni led caretaker committee on the ground that it was not validly constituted.

It was clearly that the group led by a certain Samuel Irabor was nothing but a misguided attempt by enemies of the APC to foment crisis within the party for, at about the same time, the PDP headed to court with a similar prayer only in its own case, it was not asking for the dissolution of the caretaker committee on the grounds of the illegality of its composition but on what it termed the violation of Section 183 of the Nigerian Constitution by virtue of Buni occupying “dual executive offices”.

Though both cases have deservedly wallowed at the courts, the enemies of Buni and the APC are unrelenting. They have found in forthcoming convention of the party, avenue to cause disaffection within the party and succeed in their bid to unseat Buni as caretaker committee head.

That Buni and his team have repeatedly assured everyone including President Buhari that the February 26th date for the convention remains sacrosanct, they have continued to insinuate that the members of the Caretaker/Extraordinary Convention Planning Committee *CECPC, which he chairs, had a hidden agenda.

A few days ago, Salisu Lukman, Director General of the Progressives Governors Forum resigned from office. It was the culmination of his fruitless efforts to undermine Buni and the caretaker committee. An unrelenting critic of the caretaker committee, his repeated acts of insubordination and disrespect towards Buni and his team, had drawn the ire of the governors and other leading members of the party who invariably moved against him while at the same time reaffirmed their confidence in Buni’s ability to continue to lead the party and organizing a convention worthy of the party.

Salihu’s ouster is a welcome development. It will among many things, afford the caretaker committee ample latitude to work assiduously toward organizing a proper convention that will usher in a new leadership that will guide the party to successful elections in 2023.

In the interim Buni’s perceptive and result-oriented leadership of the party will continue to attract more supporters and goodwill to himself and the party at large.

2023: Umahi responds to Atiku, claiming that the PDP is missing his leadership

0

Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has been asked by Governor David Umahi to stay out of the Peoples Democratic Party’s (PDP) crisis (PDP).
In response to a statement attributed to Atiku, Umahi, the former vice president, and the PDP have asked people to stop associating him with their problems.

Atiku had described Umahi as heartless for unjustly sealing the Ebonyi PDP secretariat and the continued detention of the party’s spokesperson in police custody through Raymond Dokpesi, the Chairman of the Technical Committee for the Actualization of Atiku Abubakar Presidential ambition.

I remember vividly when I came here on two, three occasions, the first one was when I was contesting for chairman of the party, this governor met me at Abuja after I have visited here to plead with me to step down for the chairmanship race for the overall interest of the party and in the overall interested of the federal government.

“This same man did not have sufficient patience when it came to his own personal ambition of becoming the president, he brutally shut down the PDP secretariat, that’s a heinous act, that is the height of brutality and wickedness,” Dokpesi said.

Speaking to newsmen through the special assistant on Media and Publicity Mr Francis Nwaze, Umahi said: “Our attention has been drawn to a publication credited to the former Vice President, Atiku Abubakar in which he urged Governor David Umahi, to unseal the PDP Secretariat and release detained Spokesman of the Party in the State.

“The People’s Democratic Party in Ebonyi State should make efforts to first, find the location of its Secretariat without involving the focused administration of Governor David Umahi, that is if it has a Secretariat as we are not aware of where they have a permanent Secretariat in their name.

“Governor David Umahi left the party in November 2020, he did not leave with even a pin belonging to the Party. And so long as we understand the continued reference to Governor Umahi by the PDP long after his exit, is a sign that the Party misses his astute leadership acumen, we appeal to the Party to please find a soft landing as Governor Umahi has since moved on in his Progressive march to eldorado.

“We are constrained to make further comments on the case of its spokesperson, Nwoba Chika who is now in detention, his case is now pending in a court of competent jurisdiction. His political party have the leeway to prove themselves innocent through the court process instead of tempting the State Government to meddle in contempt of court.”

NAFDAC seizes 80 bags of tainted wheat in Gombe

0

On Friday, the National Agency for Food Drug Administration and Control, NAFDAC, Gombe, announced the seizure of 80 bags of adulterated wheat from one Adamu Hassan’s store in Gombe market.

James Agada, NAFDAC’s State Coordinator, who displayed the tainted wheat to journalists in Gombe, warned the public to be wary of such wheat, which he said is not fit for human consumption.

According to Agada, the 80 bags of adulterated wheat were intended for planting by farmers and not for human consumption because it had been treated with pesticides.

He claims that a measure of wheat should be between N600 and N1,000, but that adulterated wheat should be between N200 and N300, putting it in high demand.

“As part of our routine surveillance and work in the state, we gathered intelligence that chemically treated wheat intended for farmers had been diverted into the Gombe market here for sale to consumers at a very low rate for their consumption,” he said.

He warned that consuming pesticide-treated wheat poses a health risk to the general public.

According to Agada, NAFDAC investigations revealed that the chemically treated wheat is intended for farmers participating in the Central Bank of Nigeria’s Anchor Borrowers program.

“The chemicals used in treating this are a pesticide, and it also has a fungicidal effect, so this grain in the soil will resist fungicide and insect attack,” he added. Someone is directly ingesting something that is dangerous to insects. It will have an effect on neurological problems as well as the spread of kidney problems.

PDP launches an attack on Buhari over Zamfara state election that was canceled

0

President Muhammadu Buhari has been attacked by the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) for canceling a planned visit to Zamfara State, which is besieged by bandits.

The main opposition party dismissed the excuse of bad weather for the trip’s cancellation on Thursday, claiming that if President Buhari truly cared, he could have traveled by road from Sokoto to Gusau.

Hon. Debo Ologunagba, the party’s National Publicity Secretary, made the announcement in a statement.

“We ask, did Mr. President cancel his trip to Zamfara State because of terrorists?” it said. Was Mr. President, an Army General in charge of all security apparatus, afraid to travel by road because he was concerned about his safety and the deterioration of our roads while he was in charge?

“The distance between Sokoto and Gusau, the capital of Zamfara State, is about 206 kilometers, a journey that a leader who cares about the people and is confident in his security could make by road.

“Rather than traveling to Gusau to reassure Nigerians, President Buhari opted for a video broadcast in which he promised the state’s troubled people that he “looks forward to a more weather-friendly period when I will visit.”

“This is yet another sad example of President Buhari leading from behind, despite his promise to Nigerians that he would lead from the front in the fight against terrorism.”

The cancellation of the trip, according to the PDP, is yet another example of the administration’s ineptness, which it claims has always played the blame game.

“Such a governance attitude speaks volumes about why our nation is in such a shambles under the Buhari-led All Progressives Congress (APC) administration, which is largely laidback, unconcerned, and corrupt,” the party added.

“If the people truly matter to Mr President and his party, the APC; if President Buhari and the APC truly believe in Nigerians and feel their pains; if truly they are concerned about the well-being of the people, then Mr President would have visited and empathized with the people of Zamfara State, who are daily traumatized by terrorists, with all the apparatus of power at his disposal.”

“Our Party is not surprised because this is a Party and a President who are never present in critical areas of our national life.” The APC is known for its responsibility-related absenteeism. Even when pressed to visit such places, President Buhari will always make excuses, play the blame game, and pass the buck.

“Nigerians will never forget the tragic episode of the Agatu Massacre in Benue State, when President Muhammadu Buhari told a befuddled nation on March 12, 2018, that he was unaware that the Inspector General of Police was not in the area as he had directed.

“In the words of Mr. President, ‘I’m not aware that the Inspector General did not spend 24 hours in the state as directed by me,’ which I am learning in this meeting.’ This was a dreadful display of leadership renunciation.

“Indeed, such a reliance on proxies for leadership is inexcusable and completely unacceptable.” Our country requires active, people-oriented, humane, functional, and result-driven leadership, which the APC, as a party of propaganda, deception, and lies, is incapable of providing.”

The PDP expressed its sympathies with the people of Zamfara state, who were “forced to waste their meager resources to organize for a Presidential visit only to be subjected to an embarrassing and uninspiring video broadcast.”

It urged Nigerians not to despair, but to rally around the PDP’s platform “to rescue and rebuild the country from the stranglehold of misrule.”

“Help is on the way from the PDP, come 2023,” the PDP said, urging citizens to keep hope alive.

Defence Minister hails former COAS, Amb Buratai’s superlative service to armed forces

The Minister of Defence, Maj Gen Bashir Salihi Magashi (rtd), has heaped praises on former Chief of Army Staff, Lt Gen Tukur Buratai (rtd) for his contributions to the Armed Forces.

Magashi said not only did the Ambassador to the Benin Republic contributed immensely to the peace and security of the country, but he was also a bridge-builder in strengthening civil-military relations.

Magashi made this known on Tuesday at a book presentation in honour of the former Army Chief at the International Conference Centre, Abuja.

The book titled, ‘The Exploits of Buratai’ was written by UK-based scholar, Best O. Agbese.

Represented by his Special Adviser, Technical, Major General Ahmed Tijani Jibrin (rtd), the minister said Buratai’s impact cut across various aspects but most notably in civil-military affairs.

He said, “The post-modern soldier is not only a fighter but also a peacekeeper, guardian, diplomat and social worker.

“The main goal of the modern military activity is no longer exclusively to depict an adversary but the creation of a safe environment for a comprehensive exclusive post-conflict political and social order. These realities clearly underscore the significance of civil-military relations as a management tool in the Defence sector”.

And according to Magashi, Buratai took this alliance to another level, evident in the establishment of the civilian Joint Task Force.

He added, “The accomplishment of this all-important feat is attributable to the efforts of Buratai who during his tenure as COAS strengthened and repositioned the civil-military relationship of the Nigerian Army to what we have today.

“I wish to therefore commend Gen Buratai for his contributions to the Nigerian Army, the entire Armed Forces and indeed Nigeria”.

Magashi, however, said the Military is employing kinetic power and also deploying a non-kinetic approach in prosecuting various counter-terrorism and anti-banditry campaigns to restore normalcy in parts of the Country.

Also at the event was Governor Yahaya Bello of Kogi State; Minister of Information and Culture, Alhaji Lai Mohammed; Minister of State for Mines and Steel Development, Uche Ogah as well as the Chief of Army Staff, Lt. Gen Faruk Yahaya.

Others were Director-General National Orientation Agency, Dr Garba Abari, the Director-General (DG) Nigerian Army Resource Centre (NARC), Major General Garba Ayodeji Wahab (rtd) as well as other retired top military officers.

The Conservator-General, National Parks Service, Dr Ibrahim Musa Goni, the Director-General Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency, National Youth Service Corps as well as the Bangladesh High Commissioner to Nigeria, His Excellency, Masudur Rahman and his Congolese counterpart were also present.
