Dr. Uzah Thomas, the Dean of Student Affairs Kwararafa University Wukari, Taraba State, has said only the Kogi State Governor Yahaya Bello can put a stop to the incessant strike actions by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU).

The university don stated this in a paper he presented at the Civil Society Think Tank Round Table on a Glance into Nigeria’s Future and Governor Yahaya Bello’s Developmental Politics; 2023 in Perspective.

In his presentation, Dr. Thomas hammered on Governor Bello’s giant strides in the education sector in Kogi to press home his point.

Bello who is being tipped by many Nigerians to run for the office of the President in 2023, upon assuming office as Kogi State Governor in 2015, ended the strike pandemic that has delayed academic activities at the state-owned university at Anyigba for years by pulling the university out of ASUU. He also established a new specialized university – Confluence University of Science and Technology (CUSTECH), Osara.

Dr. Thomas in his paper titled “Looking into the Future of Nigeria through Governor Yahaya Bello’s leadership Strides in Kogi State”, declared that “there has been a massive investment in the educational sector in the state, with a large chunk of the state budget allocated to education. This has consequently reflected in the revamping of schools across the state. The quality of human resources in the state has improved tremendously by implementing a policy on training and retraining for teachers.”

He argued that “in looking at Nigeria from the Kogi State perspective before the assumption of office Governor Yahaya Bello, it must be stated that leadership competence is what is required to take the country out of the doldrums. The agitations for zoning based on ethnicity do not stand a chance. This paper concludes that competence should be emphasized.”

In similar vein, Prof Ahmed Danfulani, the former Director General of National Institute for Peace and Strategy Studies (NIPSS) Kuru, said Kogi State Governor, Yahaya Bello has set examples that should be amplified and used as a yardstick in assessing candidates that have signified interest in leading Nigeria.

Prof Danfulani stated this while delivering a speech as a guest speaker at the Civil Society Think Tank Round Table on “A Glance into Nigeria’s Future and Governor Yahaya Bello’s Developmental Politics; 2023 in Perspective.”

He said Governor Yahaya Bello example in leadership is “noteworthy”, adding that his approach to governance in the state is top-notch.

“At the back of our minds, let us have that we must be clear about the qualities the next President of Nigeria should possess. This is on the heels that stepping into the shoes of President Muhammadu Buhari is a tedious task,” Danfulani said.

12 Killed As Farmers, Herders Clash In Chad

Twelve people have been killed in clashes between herders and farmers in southern Chad, where ethnic friction over land is common, the authorities said Friday.
Herders armed with guns killed 11 farmers in retaliation, according to Ali Ahmat Akhabach, governor of Moyen-Chari province, who spoke to AFP by phone.
The incident took place on Wednesday in the village of Sandana, about 550 kilometres (320 miles) south of the capital, N’Djamena, he said.

“The toll is 12 dead, and several armed people were arrested,” Ahmat Akhabach said. “The situation is currently under control.”
In a statement, the Chadian Convention for Human Rights, an NGO, attacked what it called “savage killing” and “the use of force… as a way to resolve” disputes.
Squabbles of this kind are common in central and southern Chad, typically pitting semi-nomadic Arab herders against darker-skinned sedentary farmers.
Clashes erupt when animals graze on farmers’ fields, destroying the crops.
In February 2021, 35 people were killed in southern Chad in similar circumstances, and 22 died in the more arid eastern part of the country in August.

Joe Biden Asks Americans To Leave Ukraine “Immediately”

0

President Joe Biden has warned U.S. citizens to leave Ukraine immediately as Russia’s live-fire drills and build-up of troops around the ex-Soviet state have deepened fears of an invasion.

“American citizens should leave… Leave now. We’re dealing with one of the largest armies in the world. “This is a very different situation, and things could go crazy quickly,” Biden said on Thursday night.

Russia began a 10-day program of military exercises with its neighbor Belarus on Thursday. At NATO an estimated 30,000 Russian troops were taking part, marking Moscow’s biggest military deployment in Belarus since the Cold War.

The drills, widely seen as a display of strength by Russia, come as around 130,000 soldiers, tanks, and missiles have been moved to its border with Ukraine.

Russia is demanding that Ukraine never be permitted to become a member of the NATO military alliance and has said it wants the organization to roll back its presence in Eastern Europe.

The BBC reported that Ukraine also accused Russia on Thursday of creating a sea blockade. Russian Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba reportedly claimed the Sea of Azov was completely congested while the Black Sea was being blocked by Russian forces as they prepared for naval drills next week.

Despite the mounting tensions, Biden ruled out sending U.S. troops into Ukraine on Thursday, saying there was no scenario in which he could see this happening.

He said, “That’s a world war when Americans and Russians start shooting at one another. We’re in a very different world than we’ve ever been in.”

Biden added that it would be difficult to position troops in Ukraine, even for the purpose of evacuating U.S. citizens.

How do you do that? How do you even find them? “I’m hoping that if (Russian President Vladimir Putin) is foolish enough to go in, he’s smart enough not to do anything that would negatively impact American citizens,” he said.

On Friday, U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken told a press conference in Melbourne, Australia, that the government was continuing to “draw down” its embassy in Ukraine amid “very troubling signs of Russian escalation.”

These signs included Moscow’s moving more troops to the Ukrainian border, Blinken said, reiterating the call for U.S. citizens to immediately leave Ukraine.

“We’re in a window when an invasion could begin at any time, and to be clear, that includes during the Olympics,” said Blinken.

The Winter Olympics are currently being held in China and are scheduled to run through Feb. 20.

Although Russia has denied it is planning to invade Ukraine, the U.S., the U.K. and other countries have sent military hardware to Kyiv to help it defend itself in case of military aggression.

Western countries, including the U.S, the U.K, and France, have been in talks with Russian ministers in recent weeks in a bid to resolve the tensions diplomatically.

British Prime Minister Boris Johnson suggested on Thursday, however, that the situation remained fragile.

“I think today, February 10, 2022, we stand on the edge of a precipice and things are as dangerous as I have seen them in Europe for a very, very long time. It is up to Vladimir Putin now to disengage and to deescalate, and the way forward is diplomacy, “he warned.

U.S. lawmakers have said they are devising the “mother of all sanctions” against Russia as a method of defending Ukraine that would be “crippling to (the Russian) economy.”

British and German ministers have also warned that there will be economic consequences for Moscow if it takes any aggressive action against Ukraine.

During a press briefing last week, analysts at thinktank Chatham House told reporters that 24% of Ukrainians surveyed in recent weeks said they were ready to physically defend Ukraine, on top of those who had already joined its growing volunteer army.

Ukraine’s President, Volodymyr Zelenskyy, has warned that any military confrontation with Russia would result in a “full-scale” war on European soil.

Last Friday, Ukraine’s Kuleba told reporters that the government had been briefed by the U.S. that Russia may use a fake video as grounds for an invasion.

If you ask me if there was anything Russia couldn’t do in order to provoke the war, my answer would be no. Everything is possible, and we should take every risk into account, “he said.

Councils elections: FCT Police announces movement restriction on Saturday, Feb 12

In order to ensure hitch-free Area Councils elections in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), the FCT Police Command has announced restriction of movement from 12 midnight to 4 pm on Saturday, February 12, 2022.

It would be recalled that plans have been concluded to hold local council elections in all the six area councils of the FCT on Saturday.

In a statement  signed by the Command Spokesperson, DSP Josephine Adeh, the Command revealed that it has deployed personnel to all nooks and crannies of the capital city in order to enforce the movement restrictions.

This is even as the CP in charge of the FCT Command, Sunday Babaji, has  expressed confidence in the already emplaced security measures  and called on the FCT residents to turn out to exercise their voting rights without the fear of harassment or molestation.

He, however, noted that the restriction of movement only bears an exception for essential workers and students who were coincidentally scheduled to write a nationwide WAEC examination.

The CP, therefore, warned that any one found to have disobeyed the movement restriction order will be dealt with in accordance with the law.

“The restriction emplaced between the period of 12mid night  – 4pm of the said date was put in place to enable the Police in a concerted effort with other sister agencies do due diligence in the discharge of their duties as touching ensuring a free and fair election thereby totally paralyzing any form of threat,” the statement said.

CP Babaji, therefore, called on all stakeholders in the election to remember the peace accord they signed and ensure that their actions and inactions do not clash with constituted guidelines.

He further  called on residents of the FCT to remain vigilant and report any suspicious or abnormal occurrence to the Police through 08032003913, 08061581938, 07057337653 and 08028940883.

PDP alleges APC leaders imported toxic fuel to fund 2023 election rigging

Following the recent importation of toxic Petroleum Motor Spirit (PMS) that caused unquantified damages to many vehicles, The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has raised alarm over attempts by the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) to provide official cover for its leaders reportedly involved in the importation of the toxic fuel into the country.

The PDP in a statement on Thursday signed by its National Publicity Secretary, Hon. Debo Ologunagba disclosed that available reports showed that “some APC leaders allegedly connived with foreign interests to import very cheap heavily contaminated fuel laden with methanol in their desperation to defraud Nigerians and corruptly raise billions of naira to fund the APC National Convention and rigging of the 2023 general elections.

“It is now clear that APC leaders are frenziedly seeking ways to steal money to fund their 2023 rigging scheme since our Party and well-meaning Nigerians exposed and challenged their plots to siphon a staggering N2.557 trillion padded as fuel subsidy for 2022” the opposition party alleged.

The PDP said that the recent coverup by APC leaders has further exposed the impunity and wickedness of the its towards Nigerians.

“The inclination for official concealment ostensibly informed the refusal by the Minister of State for Petroleum Resources, Timipre Sylva, on national television on Wednesday, February 9, 2022 to name those involved in the importation of the poisonous fuel into our country.

“Against this backdrop, the PDP rejects the announced internal investigation of this terrible crime by the government as the APC administration cannot be trusted given its manifest predilection to shield the APC leaders involved. Nigerians note the various investigations instituted by the APC government in the past which ended without any meaningful outcome; notable among which was the manipulated EndSARS Report.

“The PDP therefore demands for an Independent Commission of Enquiry to investigate all issues connected to the “APC Toxic Fuel ImportGate”. Those involved must be exposed and held accountable”.

The party maintained that President Muhammadu Buhari, as the Minister of Petroleum Resources cannot acquit himself with his reported comedy of anger, buck-passing, querying of subordinates and attempt by government to use some companies as scapegoats instead of accepting responsibility by exposing and naming individuals involved in the crime.

“President Buhari and the APC must explain how the reported 317 million liters of toxic fuel came into our country, got cleared and distributed across the nation to worsen the life-discounting experiences of millions of Nigerians under the APC administration.

“Apart from the consequential economic hardship occasioned by the damaging of cars and equipment, crippling of means of livelihood across the country as well as increase in the cost of food items and essential services, the cascading effect of adulterated fuel on our aviation industry can only be imagined.

“Sadly, the situation has the possibility to trigger loss of confidence by international airlines in our aviation fuel supply with attendant economic downturn as they would more likely prefer to fuel in neighboring countries,” PDP said.

The opposition party called on all Nigerians, particularly the Organized Labour, Civil Society, Student Bodies, Professional Bodies and all persons of goodwill to insist on an independent inquiry of this crime against the Nigerian people.

It reminded the ruling party that its is practically pushing Nigerians to the wall, adding that there is a limit to which the people can continue to stomach the barefaced atrocities and impunities of the present administration.
