FCT Council elections: Confusion as exercise begins

0

As accreditation and voting began in the early hours of Saturday, there is confusion in almost all of the sixty-two political wards that make up the six Area Councils of the Federal Capital Territory.

The Bvax malfunction left the Independent Electoral Commission officials helpless in Abaji Area Council, leaving prospective voters stranded at Ona of Abaji palace polling unit, Angwar Sabo, and Abaji Central Primary School.
Ibrahim Musa, along with Yahaya Sadiq, PDP and APC agents in the area, blamed INEC for the exercise’s failure to go off without a hitch.

Prospective voters in the Kuje Area Council central ward were seen milling around the polling unit with no electoral materials or INEC officials.

At Karu ward in Abuja Municipal Area Council, polling unit O02 and 005, there was zero turn out of voters for the exercise..

However, one of the potential voters at Karu, identified as Pauline, expressed her dissatisfaction with the situation.

“No voters register for the electorate to identify their names, we are moving round without direction, its back and front situation”

It is the same situation in Garki as of the the time of filling this report.

At polling unit 002 in Jiwa Ward, according to the Presiding Officer, Agwu Agnes, a total of 2,401 ballot papers were provided by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) for the Chairmanship and councillorship election.

Interestingly, while the names of candidates of the different political parties participating in the Chairmanship election were displayed, that of the APC candidate was conspicuously missing.

The All Progressives Congress (APC) chairmanship candidate’s name for the Abuja Municipal Area Council election is missing on the list of names displayed by the INEC.

However, that of the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) chairmanship, and councillorship candidates of all other political parties were conspicuously reflected.

The missing name may not be unconnected with the legal fireworks between Alhaji Murtala Kashi and Alhaji Hassan Gwagwa.

Until last Thursday when the Supreme Court ruled in favour of Alhaji Murtala Kashi as the authentic Abuja Municipal Area Council Chairmanship candidate, Alhaji Hassan Suleiman Gwagwa has been posing as the candidate after the APC primary election that ended in confusion last year.

The sources said that no fewer than 20 bandits were eliminated at the general area of the Nigerian Defence Academy (NDA).

“On sighting the aircraft, the bandits started fleeing into the fringes of the forest. This brought about an objective and very decisive rain of hell from above on the miscreants as surviving bandits seen to be scampering for safety from the superior air presence were effectively mopped up.

“Moreso as it is customary, feedback received on Friday after the operation from both the ground forces and local sources, revealed that the bandits were effectively disoriented and suffered a loss of about 20 bandits.

I’ll curse the day I met Oluwo of Iwo

0

I will curse that day that I fell in love with the Oluwo of Iwo, Emperor Adewale Akanbi, Telu I.
And I’ll never forgive myself for giving him visits and taking photos with him.
I’ll also regret listening to Semiu Okanlawon and Gbenga James, who promised for Oba Akanbi Adewale, Telu 1’s integrity and charisma as a cosmopolitan spirit whose aura would herald spectacular advancements in Iwo.

If the Oluwo of today honestly and sincerely wrote a letter to the Governor of his State requesting for 20 million naira in support of his yet-to-be-held marriage wedding, I will be disappointed and ashamed of him, Alhaji Gboyega Oyetola, who happens to be the Governor of Osun State, a state which Iwo, Olodo Oba is one of the most notable, unique and important towns
Sequester Iwo away from Osun State, the State will never be the same because of the historical, cultural and religious importance of the town in that State and Yoruba land
I believed Oba Adewale Akanbi, Telu I is a streetwise fellow who has the divine mark on him and who God has smiled on to become the Oluwo of Iwo, the only abode of an animal which speaks like a human – the Parrot.

Up to now, I have great respect for the young and charming Oba whose some acts, deeds and strides have been misunderstood, misinterpreted and sometimes misconceived
Although some of his doings too may not be proper in the eyes of those who dislike him, you know some of us who don’t see any wrong in whoever has endeared himself to us.
Sincerely, Oba Akanbi has not been sleeping in his palace and marrying away in the lustre of being the Emperor of Iwo.
Despite swimming in this controversy or that, he has within the scope of time lured some developments into.his town.

He commenced the rehabilitation of Iwo – Osogbo Road by buying tons of cement and personally led his people in patching the gorges and terrible potholes on the road.
He, finally, through his actions attracted the attention of the Federal Government to the same road which has enjoyed a modest rehabilitation from the Federal Road Maintenance Agency, FERMA.

He has also provided the conducive environment for the inauguration of a centre for Open University in Iwo and capped this by attracting also a private University to the town
And within his short period, his town has been lucky to be one of the favoured towns in Nigeria which has been blessed with a Federal Government College of Education.
Oba Akanbi is mercurial, charming and stylish.
He has tasted the bad, horrible and good times of life both in Nigeria and abroad.
Give it to him, all these experiences of him are being reflected in his administration of his Kingdom
I love him for all these and hold him in high esteem but I am ready to disclaim him if that letter emanated from his palace for many reasons
Firstly, I want to make it clear that if it is a fact that he wrote that letter soliciting and not demanding financial support from his state governor, Oluwo has never committed any offence or has done anything shameful or distasteful, either to his person, throne or kingdom.

Hence I don’t know why there has been so much noise over this as if he has done something strange or committed a blue murder.
This is not the first time an Oba will write a letter of support to a state governor seeking financial support. It is not the first time and it will not be the last time.
For God’s sake, Oluwo is an Oba of a Yoruba town.
Yes, as an Oba nothing hamstrung him in writing a letter seeking whatever support from the state governor for his personal and community functions. Absolutely nothing
Oluwo was in order if the letter emanated from him.
Whoever views this act as shameful or degrading is a bloody hypocrite, horrible and a bloody fake fellow.

The only shameful and ignoble act was the leaking of that letter to the public and God will punish whoever did that.
Even private people write Governor for financial support whenever they are to celebrate one event or the other.

Thus, nothing strange if Oluwo had written a letter to Governor Oyetola soliciting for just 20 million naira to hold his marriage ceremony
It is a pity that here in the South we don’t place premium and value our Oba and traditional rulers.

We plant them on the throne via government fiat and leave them there with nothing to oil the requirements of the palace
Even, some states denied the traditional council the Constitutional 5 per cent allocation and yet when the Obas turn to the Governor for financial assistance we make a noise of it.
Shame upon us all.

I pity the traditional rulers in the South West who have to be running up and down seeking means to live well on the throne, while their counterparts in other parts of the country enjoy their throne in surplus patronage of the state.
In the olden days, the rule is that you must offload goodies whenever you are in the palace but now it is role reversal, people expected to take loads of money or gifts away from the palace.

In other climes, traditional rulers are pampered, adored and well taken care of, but here, we mess up ours and leak their letters into the public just to ridicule them.
We are not ridiculing them, but ridiculing our cherished culture, heritage and arts.
Personally, my grouse with the letter is the sum demanded.

I never believed that Emperor Akanbi is so cheap and of low taste by demanding just a sum of 20 million nairas from the state Governor for a Royal Wedding.
A whole first-class King of Iwo demanding just 20 million from his State Governor is not only demeaning but ridiculous. It belittles his personality and cast doubt on his cosmopolitanism. What will the 20 million naira cater for in a royal marriage of that magnitude?
Is it for the takeaway?
Is it for the branding of the venue or the dress of the couple?
Is it for drinks, foods, wines and choice whisky?
Is it for the accommodation of guests and other logistics?
Maybe it is only for the engagement and introduction ceremony?
Honestly, if it is a truism that Oba Adewale Akanbi, Oluwo of Iwo has solicited for and not even demanded for just 20 million naira in a letter to Governor Oyetola in support of his proposed wedding, he does not deserve to be my king And I will curse the day I met him.

FG flags-off enrollment of corps members into NHIS

0

The Federal Government has officially flagged-off the enrolment of Corps Members into the National Health Insurance Scheme.

The Minister of Youth and Sports Development, Mr Sunday Dare at the official flag-off today in Abuja said the enrolment demonstrated government’s commitment to the health care needs of young Nigerians.

He said Corps Members across the nation in large numbers played critical roles in national development, hence, they could not be ignored.

“To this end, no amount of resources will be too much to be put at their disposal as Corps Members, and as patriotic Nigerians”, Dare said.

The Minister said the NHIS was launched in 2005 and Nigerians in the private and public sectors of the econony have benefitted from the initiative.

He added that the gesture of enrolling Corps Members in NHIS was in appreciation of the invaluable contributions of the NYSC Scheme to the unity and development of the country.

“It is also a clear testimony of government’s desire to improve the lives of youths who are the hope of a prosperous and united Nigeria”, the Minister said.

He urged Corps Members to be more patriotic to offer greater services to the nation.

Dare also commended the wonderful achievements of NYSC Scheme aimed at better service delivery.

“Several of your programmes have been tailored towards better service delivery.

In particular, l wish to laud the enormous contributions of Corps Members to effective healthcare delivery in Nigera.

They have been part of the driving force in rendering rural health services where they have made great impact and also in HIRD and your patriotic contributions in the wake of COVID-19 pandemic”, Dare said.

He specially commended the leading roles of Corps Members in the production and distribution of non-pharmaceutical materials to Nigerians at the outset of COVID-19 pandemic.

He urged them to keep up the good work, strive and justify the confidence reposed in them by the Nigerian people.

The Minister promised that the Federal Ministry of Youth and Sports Development would continue to support the noble initiatives brought forward for the overall success of the NYSC Scheme.

NYSC Director-General, Major General Shuaibu Ibrahim said the official flag-off was a landmark achievement and a watershed in the annals of the National Youth Service Corps.

He said a robust and sustainable health care system for Corps Members had always been of paramount importance to successive Managements of the Scheme, adding that their enrolment would be a big morale booster for them.

“Today’s event is the culmination of the Presidential directive issued in 2016, which arose as a result of the unfortunate deaths of three Corps Members deployed to Kano, Zamfara and Bayelsa States Orientation Camps.

The loss of any Corps Member as it were, provokes sadness in us, leaving the Scheme highly diminished.

Corps Members, who represent the most critical part of our demography-the youths, are the leaders and builders of tomorrow.

Consequently, any government policy aimed at uplifting this group is akin to building the future of our dear country, Nigeria”, he said.

General Ibrahim added that “it is fulfilling that the enrolment of Corps Members into the Health Insurance Scheme is in line with the policy thrust” of his administration bordering on the improvement of welfare and security of Corps Members and Staff.

“This health initiative, known as NYSC Group Individual Family Social Health Insurance Programme, (GIFSHIP) has been designed as a holistic health insurance scheme, covering the periods of Pre-Orientation, that is, as soon as a Prospective Corps Member picks up Call-up Letter, which is the instrument that qualifies him/her for admittance into National Service, until the end of his/her terminal leave, which is three weeks after disengagement from Service”, the DG said.

General lbrahim stated further that for effective implementation of the scheme, six Health Maintenance Organizations (HMOS) had been carefully selected after a competitive process for each of the six geo-political zones to drive the process.

He said in order to ensure a seamless arrangement devoid of encumbrances, Corps Members were expected to register under Health Care Practitioners in their localities, while he appealed to both the HMOs and Health Care Providers to “approach this insurance scheme with the highest degree of responsibility and integrity.”

The Director-General added that NYSC Management would leave no stone unturned in order to ensure that all, who have roles to play in the initiative carry them out with patriotic zeal so as to meet the expectations of Government.

He added that the Scheme has designed a mechanism for strict monitoring of the HMOs in concert with the NHIS Office to guard against service failure.

“We will ensure that the operations of the health scheme are consistent with the philosophy behind the initiation of this wonderful health insurance scheme by Government.

I would like to assure that the NYSC and NHIS Management will also not relent in providing the necessary supervision and enabling environment while also monitoring and ensuring seamless operations of the health scheme.

Having come this far, we will not hesitate to take appropriate decisive actions against any individual or institution whenever there is any noticeable infractions and gaps in the implementation of this initiative”, Ibrahim warned.

The DG enjoined all Corps Members nationwide to avail themselves of the unique opportunity provided by the NHIS to access qualitative health care at no cost, while he also enjoined them to reciprocate the gesture by being conscientious in the discharge of their duties to their fatherland.

Major General Shuaibu Ibrahim during the programme reiterated his call for the establishment of NYSC Trust Fund which has passed the second reading at the National Assembly.

He said the fund when established, would reduce dependence on government for funding the Scheme, as well as provide jobs for millions of Nigerian youths through the provision of start-up capitals to Corps Members at the end of the Skill Acquisition and Entrepreneurship training they went through during the service year. The Fund would drastically curb youth restiveness as well as other forms of criminality in the country according to the DG.

The Executive Secretary, National Health Insurance Scheme, Professor Mohammed Nasir Gambo said that the agency was saddled with the execution of Presidential mandate of attaining universal health coverage for all Nigerians in line with the declaration of sustainable development goals.

He said that the NHIS/NYSC initiative was in the right direction because of its significant contribution to the well-being of Corps Members nationwide.

“It is worthy to note that investment in the welfare and wellbeing of young people is one of the most critical things that we can do as a responsible nation.

It is our patriotic duty as individuals and organisations to ensure that we make education, employment and quality healthcare available, accessible and affordable”, he said.

Professor Sambo appealed to Health Maintenance Organisations and Healthcare Providers to work within the operational guidelines of the NHIS and also ensure that no Corps Member is left unattended to.

The Minister for Health, Dr Osagie Ehanire was represented by the Director, Public Health in the Ministry, DrAlex-Okoh MO.

The Director-General of the NYSC, Maj-Gen. Shuaibu Ibrahim presented a detailed explanation of the agencies engaged in the process and how they will work together to make the exercise successful at the flag-off ceremony in Abuja.

“For effective implementation of this scheme, six Health Maintenance Organizations (HMOS) have been carefully selected after a competitive process for each of the six geopolitical zones to drive the process.

“To ensure a seamless arrangement devoid of encumbrances, corps members are expected to register under Health Care Practitioners in their localities.

“It is, therefore, my expectation that both the HMOs and Health Care Providers will approach this insurance scheme with the highest degree of responsibility and integrity.

“On our part, Management of the NYSC will leave no stone unturned in order to ensure that all, who have roles to play in this initiative, carry them out with patriotic zeal so as to meet the expectations of the Government.

He urged Corps members to avail themselves of the opportunity to make ensure they don’t fall prey to health challenges during their service process.

Bamidele makes U-turn on challenging APC guber primary in Ekiti 2022

Senator Opeyemi Bamidele, a candidate for the ruling All Progressive Congress (APC) in Ekiti’s recently concluded governorship primary, has toned down his threats to challenge the results of the shadow poll that produced Mr. Biodun Oyebanji as the party’s candidate.

Despite his resentment of the exercise, Bamidele said his decision not to challenge Oyebanji’s candidacy was motivated by the need to maintain unity and cohesion in the State chapter.

Bamidele had promised to challenge the procedure in court, along with seven other aspirants who had boycotted it.

They alleged the exercise that produced the Ex -Secretary to the State Government was brazenly manipulated by Governor Abubakar Badaru-led APC committee.

But, in a statement entitled “Ekiti 2022 governorship primaries and my stand”, which he personally signed, the Ekiti Central Senator said he backtracked on his threats after critical stakeholders intervened and begged to him to sheathe his proverbial sword in the interest of the party

Bamidele maintained that he was ruffled by the alleged abysmal turn the shadow poll took and the betrayal of confidence but he won’t abandon the struggle to right the wrongs and make the party truly democratic.

“Yet, in spite of my strong convictions as expressed above, I have come to some irreversible conclusions and these are the messages I need to pass on to all and sundry today as I temporarily break my silence on the way forward. One is to say that I have chosen to drop the option of going to Court to sue the party.

“The other is to make it crystal clear to everyone that both my supporters and I will not defect from APC. Details of the reasons which informed these choices will be communicated at a later date when my supporters and I address Ekiti people and Nigerians at large. It is not just about me.

“It is about the unity and progress of Ekiti State and her politically undermined and economically afflicted people. It is also about ensuring that the ground is not prepared for reactionary beneficiaries to take advantage of seeming lack of capacity to manage our affairs as a ruling party in the State.

“I also must coordinate and lead my own aspect of this popular struggle in a way to ensure that my supporters and stakeholders who had been isolated from the mainstream of the party become relevant again, for anything short of that can only be a highway to nowhere.

“We have all contributed so much to building this party in Ekiti State and the management, as well as its decision making process, cannot be an exclusive preserve of a few.

“That is the new reality that those in control, including our national leadership must accept or it becomes a popular subject matter of a struggle around which a popular movement must be built. This is where I stand,” he added.
