Buhari awards scholarships to three of Nigeria’s best young scientists

President Muhammadu Buhari will announce doctoral scholarships to three young Nigerians who excelled in the final exams of the 774 Young Nigeria Scientists’ Presidential Award for 2022 in the near future.

The Minister of Science, Technology and Innovation (STI), Dr Ogbonnaya Onu, announced this at the 774 Young Nigerian Scientists Presidential Award (774-YONSPA) 2022 edition in Abuja on Monday.

Onu stated that Buhari will receive and award scholarships to young students at the STI Expo 2022 opening ceremony, which will take place on March 14, 2022.
The minister said the 774 YONSPA which he created at the inception of his tenure as minister and had been on-going since 2017, is to inspire and prepare young minds to take up careers in the sciences.

He noted that the competition started at the local government levels where candidates competed in STEM subjects of Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry and Biology.

Onu said it is imperative to nuture young pupils to come out the best because Nigeria needs the best hands and minds to solve national problems.

He maintained that Nigeria is anxious to produce a Nobel Laureate in the field of sciences and that these young pupils needed all the encouragement the country could give.

According to him, their performances were extraordinary at the concluded examinations.

He also exhorted other candidates who emerged the best in their states to become the best in their university years.

Mohammed Abdullahi, Minister of State for STI, said the programme was initiated to “Catch them young for the future’’.

“I am aware that all senior secondary schools in the 774 Local Government Areas of the federation competed at the local and state government levels and you emerged as champions,’’ Abdullahi said.

Miss Maryam Ogunbayo from Gombe state emerged first and the overall best in the competition.

Master Gbolahan Ayinde from Ogun, emerged second; while Miss Uchendu Judith from Edo state took the third position.

According to police reports, Master Michael Kashamu, one of the sons of late flamboyant politician, Sen. Buruji Kashamu, Dowen College, and others were indicted in the death of Sylvester Oromoni, a 12-year-old pupil who died under mysterious circumstances in 2021.

Other students, including Kenneth Inyang, Favour Benjamin, Ansel Temile, and Edward Begue, were indicted, according to reports monitored on the report ssidnto be signed by Deputy Commissioner of Police, Fayoade Adegoke, of the Lagos State Police Criminal Investigation Department.
Also indicted were: Dowen College management, three staff members – Valentine Igbokwe Eze, Ahmed Bariyu and Adesanya Olusesan, who were accused of negligence.

“That the prime suspects are one Michael Kashamu ‘m’ 15 years, Kenneth Inyang ‘m’ 15 years, Favour Benjamin ‘m’ 16 years, Ansel Temile ‘m’ 14 years, Edward Begue ‘m’ 16 years, Valentine Igbokwe Eze ‘m’ 45 years, Ahmed Bariyu ‘m’ 52 years and Adesanya Olusesan ‘m’ 42 years.

“That sometimes in the past, before the death of the deceased, Sylvester Oromoni (jnr) ‘m’, there was an incident whereby Favour Benjamin ‘m’ beat the deceased for disclosing to his sister, Amanda Oromoni ‘f’ how he was forced to describe his sister’s private part.

“The incident was not given attention by the school authority.

“That Torilla Wilson ‘m’ stated that Favour Benjamin ‘m’, Michael Kashamu ‘m’ and Ansel Temile ‘m’ took the deceased to the third floor to prevent students on the second floor from witnessing how the deceased was being bullied and beaten.

“However, there is no concrete evidence to back up the claim.

“In addition, from the records, one of the suspects, Edward, was issued a letter of working suspension by the school authority dated 23/05/2019 for inappropriate behavior, to clean his classroom on May 23, 2021 for eating popcorn while a teacher was in class and eventually spat some on the teacher.

“That equally, another suspect, Kasamu Michael, was issued a letter of suspension by the school authority, dated March 5, 2019 from school for bullying and physically assaulting a fellow student, one Okeke, who has since left the school.”

The police report further revealed how the suspects and other students constituted themselves into a clique that bullied and intimidated fellow students in the school.

“It is evidently clear that some group of students constituted themselves into a clique that bullies and intimidates fellow students in the school.

“A glaring example is Michael Kashamu ‘m’ and ‘Edward Bague ‘m’, who were earlier reprimanded for bullying other students.

“The three house masters, Valentine Igbokwe Eze ‘m’ 45 years, Ahmed Bariyu ‘m’ 52 years and Adesanya Olusesan ‘m’ 42 years, failed to take decisive action when cases of inappropriate behaviour were reported to them.”

The deceased’s cousin, Perry Oromoni, has taken to social media to alleged that some senior pupils of the college beat him up in his hostel room for refusing to join a cult.

But the school denied the claim, stating that the boy complained of pain in his legs and hip following an injury he sustained while playing football.

Olumide Paul sentenced to prison for love scam

Olaleye Olumide Paul, 25, was convicted and sentenced to 18 months in prison by a Federal High Court in Ilorin for offences bordering on internet fraud.

Olaleye was one of the suspects arrested on October 26, 2021, in Ogbomosho, Oyo State, after the Ilorin Zonal Command of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission received actionable intelligence about the activities of persons suspected of being fraudsters (EFCC).

“That you, Olaleye Olumide Paul, sometime in March 2019 at Ogbomosho within the jurisdiction of the Federal High Court fraudulently impersonated one Roven Riley via Gmail account beautifullina@gamil.com to obtain $154.82 (One Hundred and Fifty Four United States Dollars) and thereby committed an offence contrary to section 22(3) (b) of the Cybercrime (Prohibition Prevention) Act, 2015 and punishable under section 22(3)(d) of the same Act.’’

However, the defendant pleaded guilty to the charge.

Following his plea, counsel to the EFCC, Sesan Ola, reviewed the facts of the case and tendered the extra-judicial statements of the defendants and iPhone 6 recovered from him at the point of arrest, and were admitted in evidence.

Ola, thereafter urged the court to consider the plea of the defendant and exhibits tendered to hold that the prosecution had established a prima-facie case against the defendant.

In his judgement, Justice Muhammed Sani found the defendant guilty of the three counts preferred against him.

The judge sentenced him to six months imprisonment on each count, to run concurrently with an option of a fine of N100,000 (One Hundred Thousand Naira Only) on each count.

He also ordered the forfeiture of the iPhone 6 recovered from the convict at the point of arrest to the Federal Government.

The defendant is to restitute $504 (Five Hundred and Four United States Dollars) to the victims.

Mele Kyari: A Reformer in the Belly of Lions- GGN

We have long been an admirer of the Mele Kyari, the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) helmsman. We recall that upon his appointment he would spearhead notable reforms in the oil and gas sector owing to his impeccable track record in the cause of his illustrious career in the oil and gas sector.

Consequently, we were not disappointed with his conduct in reforming the country’s oil and gas sector in ways too numerous to mention. But we know he was up against a mountain of challenges that have held the development of the oil and gas sector moribund for years.

The oil and gas sector in the country is like the game of Russian Roulette, where you must be brave to pull the trigger and when you do, it is either you get killed, or you stay alive. In his case, he pulled the trigger, and he stayed alive, but not completely. The recent happenings in the country concerning the importation of toxic fuel presents a very delicate situation for him and the management of the NNPC.

Heads would roll, no doubt, but whose head would that be? That of Mele Kyari, whose table the buck stops or the importers of the fuel? A lot has been peddled in the public space in recent times. It seems the powerful cartel behind the importation of the toxic fuel are having the upper hand and would stop at nothing till they extract their pound of flesh from Mele Kyari, whose regime has been somewhat bad business for fuel marketers through concerted efforts at ensuring that the oil and gas sector in the country is sanitized for optimal performance.

As expected, there have been accusations, and counter-accusations in this regard, with the bulk of the petroleum marketers forming an unholy alliance against the NNPC under Mele Kyari. This is indeed a not too pleasant experience from all indications, as it is evident that the plot is for Mele Kyari to take the fall.

This is payback time for the reformer that braved the odds to entrench a regime of transparency and accountability in the oil and gas sector. The worrisome aspect of the ensuing melee is that the lions of the oil and gas industry in Nigeria would do everything possible to ensure that Mele Kyar gets the boot. And the various narrative in the public domain suggests so.

For whatever it is worth, the coming days and months would be the most trying for Mele Kyari, and we can’t but empathize with him. But we are not convinced that the Oil and Gas industry Lions would have the upper hand. They might succeed in misleading the unsuspecting members of the general public. However, they can’t fool the relevant authorities, not even with their vast financial war chest.

The removal of subsidy on petroleum subsidy also comes to mind. We recall some time in 2021 while speaking during a ministerial briefing Mele Kyari said NNPC could no longer bear the burden of underpriced sales of premium motor spirit (PMS), better known as petrol, adding that the market price need to be implemented. He said NNPC pays between N100-120 billion a month to keep the pump price at the current levels.

Hear him: “The price could have been anywhere between N211 and N234 to the litre. This means that consumers are not paying for the full value of the PMS that we are consuming, and therefore, someone is paying that cost. As we speak today, the difference is being carried in the books of NNPC, and I can confirm to you that NNPC may no longer be in a position to carry that burden.”

This position indeed infuriated those feeding fat from the subsidy regime, which consequently felt threatened by the stance of Mele Kyari in this regard. The truth remains that the subsidy regime is not sustainable, and efforts must be made in this regard. This is herculean, and it is on record that Mele Kyari was indeed brave to make this position known in the public space.

We could confidently say that this was one of his unforgivable sins. As such, the Lions of the Oil and Gas industry waited patiently for the time to extract their pound of flesh for daring to take the butter from their bread.

That he is being vilified is not a surprise to industry watchers because we saw it coming. After all, the Lions of the Oil and Gas sector believe no reform should ever take place in the industry as it must remain business as usual. And they have gone all out for the jugular, aiming to suffocate him till he is breathless.

In our candid opinion, this should not be payback time for an individual who has displayed uncommon bravery in service to the country. The implication of the Lions of the Oil and Gas sector having their way would set dangerous precedence, and nobody would want to stake his neck in service to the country.

We must also add that the press is most culpable in this regard as the ethics of objectivity has been thrown in the trash can in return for sensationalism that suits the purpose of vested interests. But it is incumbent on all Nigerians to rise in defence of a selfless patriot who has stood and fought for the nation’s good.

While we support the investigation ordered by Mr President into the importation of toxic fuel into the country, we are, however, against the vilifying of a good man for the negligence of a few elements, which would be unfair to all his efforts and sacrifices for the nation.

These are indeed interesting times for the reformer that pushed extensively for the Petroleum Industry Act (PIA), which will attract more business Investments in Nigeria on the heels that the Oil and Gas industry has been struggling with the fiscal environment in Nigeria, such as issues surrounding investors investing money and getting it back with returns they deserve and without fiscal stability and sanctity of contracts.

This is what the new PIA has done to bring all these in focus to ensure that the fiscal environment is very competitive with world-class practices that you can find instability and security, which is indeed a new dawn for investors as well as the NNPC that is transiting to a commercially oriented limited liability company. All thanks to the reformer, Mele Kyari. We firmly believe that this country owes him gratitude and not vilification.

Gombe Gov’s Aide Gadam Resigns, Mulls Dumping APC

Alhaji Garba Jijji Gadam, the Special Adviser on Intergovernmental Relations to Governor Muhammadu Inuwa Yahaya of Gombe State, has resigned with immediate effect.

He cited personal reasons and appreciated Governor Yahaya for giving him what he described as a ‘golden opportunity’ to serve the state under his leadership.

He also served as special adviser during former Governor Danjuma Goje’s administration as well as Commissioner of Information, Sport and Culture during the administration of late Governor Abubakar Habu Hashidu.

The long-time political associate of Senator Goje is the second special adviser to resigned from Governor Yahaya’s cabinet within the last two weeks.

In a phone interview with Jijji Gadam said he resigned the appointment to enable him to defect to another political party, even though he stated that he is still making consultation on his next political move.

Anambra State Police Command said it had killed four armed men and recovered a number of dangerous weapons.

According to DSP Ikenga Tochukwu, the command’s spokesman, 17 pieces of 7.62mm live ammunition for the Ak 47 rifle, 107 pieces of expended 7.62mm ammunition for the Ak47 rifle, seven pieces of expended cartridges for pump action, ten pieces of expended 7.62mm long for Lar rifle, one big hammer, three phones, and a wallet containing IDs and ATM cards were recovered.

In Kaduna, man kills his neighbor over bucket of water

Gado Yahaya, a tailor, has been remanded in custody by a Magistrate Court in Kaduna State, presided over by Ibrahim Emmanuel, for allegedly killing his neighbor during an altercation over a bucket of water.

While in court, Yahaya, a Rigasa resident, appeared remorseful.

Yahaya, 29 years old, allegedly fought with one Liman Salisu over a bucket of water, resulting in Salisu’s death, according to the court.

“He (Gado Yahaya) is a resident of Rigasa in Kaduna State and was arraigned on charges of culpable homicide before a Kaduna Magistrate Court on Monday,” said the prosecutor, Insp. Chidi Leo.

Yahaya, 29 years old, allegedly fought with one Liman Salisu over a bucket of water, according to the court.
The prosecutor alleged that Yahaya killed Salisu with a pestle during a fight over a bucket of water.

He narrated that in the course of the fight, he (Gado Yahaya) went into the kitchen, picked a pestle and hit Salisu on his head, adding that he (Liman Salisu) slumped after he was hit on the head and died on the way to the hospital.

The prosecutor told the Court that Gado Yahaya had written and signed a confessional statement when he was brought to the police station for questioning.

According to the prosecutor, the offence contravened the provisions of Section 190 of the Penal Code of Kaduna State, 2017.

The Court directed the police to forward the case file to the State Director of Public Prosecution for legal advice and adjourned the matter to March 9, 2022, for mention.

Group endorses NYSC Trust Fund Bill, hails Reps

A pan Nigerian group, Conscience Nigeria (CN), has endorsed the proposed National Youth Service Corp Trust Fund, describing it as a “game-changer” in addressing youth unemployment and job creation in the country.

The group made this known in a statement made available to journalists by its Secretary-general, Bamidele Michael over the weekend, saying that the NYSC Trust Fund is laudable and would serve as an avenue for the federal government to address youth unemployment in the country.

It said: “The proposed NYSC Trust Fund is a game-changer. The provisions in the bill are well captured which indeed reflects the present realities in the country with regards generation of jobs and addressing a critical component of the population of the country.”

“The fact that the bill intends to provide startup capital for youths across the country while undergoing the mandatory service year and even after they leave service is well positioned to set the country on the path of sustainable growth and development,” the statement read.

The group further commended the leadership of the NYSC for displaying “great foresight” in proposing to establish a Trust Fund that would address the myriads of challenges facing the youthful population in the country, especially in the area of employment generation.

“The NYSC leadership deserves commendation for the display of foresight in this critical point of our existence. The opportunities in the establishment of the Trust Fund are innumerable. This is brilliant and well-positioned to serve as the medium for the rapid development of entrepreneurship amongst the teeming youthful population in the country. This is indeed a golden opportunity that the country must harness towards socio-economic development,” it noted.

The group also called on well-meaning individuals and groups in the country to rally support for the establishment of the NYSC Trust Fund in the interest of growth and development, owing to the strategic role of the youths in nation building.

“We call on well meaning individuals and groups to rally support for the establishment of the NYSC Trust Fund. This is a national concern positioned to be of immense benefit to the country. It would address unemployment; it would bring out the entrepreneurship potentials of our youths.

“The implication of having a bustling youthful population that is availed unhindered funds for the actualization of their potentials is ours for the taking. Not only shall the country experience rapid growth and development, but the burden placed on the shoulders of parents would also be lifted as youths would be actively engaged in economic ventures that would be beneficial to them and the society at large,” the group pointed out.

It therefore extended its commendation to the House of Representatives for how it had engaged deliberations on the bill on the floor, saying that the lawmakers displayed an “unalloyed commitment” to positively addressing youth unemployment in the country.

“The House of Representatives by their action that ensured the bill scaled through second reading is commendable. The deliberations on the floor of the lower chamber were rich and constructive. It indeed brought out the numerous merits of the bill. This is a display of an unalloyed commitment to national development.

“We encourage the members of the National Assembly not to relent in this commitment by ensuring that the bill gets speedy passage in the interest of the teeming youths in the country,” it urged.

It would be recalled that the proposed NYSC Trust Fund bill seeks to “provide a sustainable source of funding for NYSC, skill acquisition training and provision of startup capital to Corps members, train and retrain the personnel of the NYSC, develop camps, NYSC formations and provide facilities therein”.

Mayowa Akinfolarin, the sponsor of the bill, said the trust fund would help in promoting the spirit of self-reliance and entrepreneurship among Corps members. He said Corps members would be trained on various skills, making them establish self-sustainable businesses after completing their national service.

Akinfolarin said the trust fund would “improve the general welfare of Corps members and enhance their preparedness to effectively discharge their statutory duties of promoting national unity, integration, self reliance and accelerated development of the national economy”.

When passed into law, private organizations will contribute one percent of their net profit to the fund, while 0.2 percent of total revenue accruing to the federation account will be earmarked for the fund.

The bill has since been referred to the relevant committee of the House for further legislative inputs.

NYSC Director-General, Major General Shuaibu Ibrahim has appealed to members of the public to send memoranda to the House Committee on Youth and Sports, as well as make physical appearance at the public hearing to drum support for the establishment of NYSC Trust Fund.

 

He said the public hearing on the bill would hold on February 24 this year, having scaled the second reading at the House of Representatives.

He stated this today in Abuja during the opening ceremony of 2022 Batch ‘A’ Pre-Orientation Workshop, with the theme; “Repositioning the critical components of the Orientation Course content to address prevailing challenges”.

He said the Trust Fund would help address infrastructural deficits in the NYSC Orientation Camps, ensure adequate provision of other operational logistics as well as reduce the number of unemployed graduates in the country.

“When the NYSC Trust Fund becomes operational, the number of Corps entrepreneurs will increase drastically, and they will in turn help to provide jobs for millions of other youths in the country. This will equally help reduce the issue of security challenge faced in the country.

Already, a number of ex-trainees of the SAED programme have established flourshing businesses in several states across the country and have employed or trained many youths of the host communities”, he said.

Ibrahim listed some of the challenges faced by the Scheme to include inadequate facilities in some of Orientation Camps, inadequate training materials for Skill Acquisition and Entrepreneurship Development (SAED) programme, in addition to the limited funding opportunities for the SAED trainees to actualize their business plans.

“This partly informed our sustained advocacy for the establishment of the NYSC Trust Fund”,

Some youths, stakeholders and other faithful of the All Progressives Congress have called for the immediate resignation of Minister of Justice and Attorney General of the Federation, Abubakar Malami, over his alleged plots to impose candidates on the party.

The group, under the aegis of the Concerned APC Youth Forum, said the AGF had perfected plans to conjure a list from the backdoor during the party’s national convention on February 26th.

In a press statement today in Abuja, the APC forum said that Malami is on a mission to cause gross disaffection in the party through the imposition of candidates, most of which are his allies and cronies.

The group’s convener/president, Comr. Owolabi Abdullahi, therefore, described Malami as an embarrassment to the party and the Buhari administration in all ramifications.

Abdullahi noted that as a matter of urgency, the AGF must desist from his ploy to dictate to members of the APC how to elect and whom to elect at the convention.

In order to save his reputation, the group, however, urged President Buhari to relieve Malami of his duties in the party’s interest should he fail to tender his immediate resignation from office.

The recent events in the buildup to the APC national convention slated for February 26th 2022, has indeed called for concern from all stakeholders; hence this press conference convoked to press for the immediate resignation of the Minister of Justice and Attorney General of the Federation, Abubakar Malami from office with immediate effect.
We are indeed concerned that a high ranking member of the government and the party in the mould of the Justice Minister would elect to undertake acts that are inimical to the ideals of the party, which are clearly outside his purview.
Mr Abubakar Malami, in recent times, has been meddlesome in the affairs of the party, using his office to cause intimidation and harassment to the current leadership of the party into submitting to his whims and caprices.
The Concerned APC Youth Forum finds his actions worrisome and an indication that the forthcoming National convention of the party might be in jeopardy due to the unwholesome activities of party members who have elected to make impositions of candidates the new norm at the expense of the array of credible candidates that have signified interest in the leadership positions in the party.
We wish to state that the meddlesomeness of the AGF, Abubakar Malami, in the party’s affairs is unbecoming of a public official and the country’s chief law officer, whose conduct ought to be guided by fairness, equity and justice. But he has indeed displayed an apparent lack of grasp of the issues regarding equity and justice through his actions regarding the forthcoming National Convention of the APC.
As concerned stakeholders of the party, we wish to put it on record that the AGF is on a mission to cause gross disaffection in the party through the attempt to impose candidates on the party, most of which are his allies and cronies through which he intends to hijack the party structure in furtherance of his political ambition.
It is also more worrisome that the AGF, Abubakar Malami, has carried on like the party’s legal adviser at the expense of his responsibilities as the chief law officer of the country, which has caused the government monumental embarrassment in recent times.
There are numerous cases where his legal advice to Mr President on critical matters of national concern has caused the government untold embarrassment and to the chagrin of the APC as a party of repute.
A good example is how the AGF, Abubakar Malami, misled the president into signing Executive Order 10 that the Supreme Court has nullified. This is the most unbecoming of the AGF. It is our considered opinion that he is not fit for purpose. His continued stay in office as the Minister of Justice and Attorney General of the Federation can no longer be justified.
The Concerned APC Youth Forum wishes to inform all stakeholders of the APC that the AGF, Abubakar Malami, is an embarrassment to the party and the APC government in all ramifications. So much so that we are tempted to question his legal qualifications and competence owing to the public ridicule he has brought to the revered Office of the Attorney General of the Federation.
The AGF, Abubakar Malami, must, as a matter of urgency, desist from his ploy to dictate to members of the APC how to elect and whom to elect at the National Convention of the party. This is on the heels that should he continue in this fashion; there would be a torrent of litigation against the party after the National Convention.
The APC as a party is known for its strict observance of democratic principles in line with the position of President Muhammadu Buhari, and for the AGF, having a contrary motive and strategy leaves all to the imagination with regards to his professional competence.
We are consequently using this medium to call for the immediate resignation from the office of the AGF, Abubakar Malami, as it has been established beyond reasonable doubt that he lacks the moral right to advise Mr President on legal matters and the spirits of the Constitution is at stake with his continued stay in office.

He must be reminded that the Office of the Attorney General of the Federation is not an instrument for intimidation and imposition. And as the Chief Law Officer of the country, his public conduct must reflect that of a constitutional purist.
We also wish to remind the AGF, Abubakar Malami, that the country is indeed aware of how he has monetized the Office of the Attorney General of the Federation in a most despicable and inglorious manner.
This is unacceptable, and his recent conduct within the party indeed justifies this position where he has positioned himself to be the Alfa and Omega regarding who occupies leadership positions in the party.
The Concerned APC Youth Forum wishes to reiterate that democracy is at stake with the continued stay in office of the AGF, Abubakar Malami. As such, nothing short of his immediate resignation from office would be accepted.
Our firm position is that the APC as a party cannot afford the luxury of going into the 2023 general election in a rancorous manner, which would eventually lead to the disintegration of the party, and the consequent electoral defeat come 2023.

We are using this medium to call on President Muhammadu Buhari to act in the party’s interest by relieving the AGF, Abubakar Malami, of his duties should he fail to tender his immediate resignation from office.
Mr President must be aware that his hard-earned reputation as an upright and fair leader to all is also at stake with how the AGF, Abubakar Malami, has conducted himself. This is indeed a litmus test for the party. We desire that Mr President would act decisively due to the urgency and necessity of the now.
We also urge other concerned stakeholders of our great party to keep the faith alive as the shenanigans of the AGF, Abubakar Malami, and his co-travellers won’t see the light of the day.
We thank you all for your kind attention and encourage all to ensure that democracy thrives in our great party. We shall not be a party to any form of unnecessary interference in the democratic processes in the party.
