The police have stopped making any more statements about Abba Kyari’s arrest by the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA).

On Monday, the suspended DCP and four other officers were arrested: ACP Sunday Ubuah, ASP James Bawa, Inspectors Simon Agrigba and John Nuhu.

ASP John Umoru, who has been declared wanted by the authorities, has yet to be apprehended. On Thursday, the Police Service Commission (PSC) announced their temporary dismissal.

Officers aided the Brazilian-Ethiopian-Nigerian ring behind the importation of 25kg of cocaine that landed Kyari and his men in trouble, according to the security agency.
Force Public Relations Officer, Muyiwa Adejobi, said the cartel was in contact with NDLEA agents at the Akanu Ibiam International Airport in Enugu and “are on their payroll.”

The mules, according to the PRO, revealed that the barons “conspire with NDLEA officers on duty and send them pre-boarding photographs for identification, seamless clearance, and unhindered passage out of the airport with narcotics”.

“The two arrested drug couriers also confirmed that they have been enjoying this relationship with the NDLEA officers at the Akanu Ibiam International Airport since 2021”, he noted.

The duo – Chibunna Patrick Umeibe and Emeka Alphonsus – landed in Nigeria on January 19, 2022 via Ethiopian Airlines flight ET917

The Force maintains the transporters had been cleared by NDLEA team and “were on their way out with the narcotics when they were apprehended by the Police”.

Seeking reaction on identities of the operatives that allegedly allowed the suspects to pass, Adejobi told the police would no longer speak for now.

The spokesman, a Chief Superintendent, explained that the matter was still under probe.

“We don’t react to the NDLEA issue again, contact the NDLEA for whatever information you need. Investigation is ongoing”, his text message on Friday reads.

Kyari is wanted in the United States by the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) concerning charges against Ramon Abbas a.k.a Hushpuppi.

A lawyer, Festus Ogun, said Kyari’s drug case might affect his US extradition because a fugitive criminal serving a sentence in Nigeria won’t be surrendered unless discharged by acquittal or expiration of sentence.

Aminu Waziri Tambuwal, the Governor of Sokoto State, has urged the outgoing Batch A stream 1 corps members to maximize their skill acquisitions and entrepreneurial development learned during their service year in order to become self-sufficient and labor employers.

Because of the scarcity of job opportunities in the country, he said, the NYSC management wisely introduced the Skill Acquisition and Entrepreneurship Development programs to make them viable after the service year.

Tambuwal, who was represented by his Deputy, Alhaji Muhammad Manir Dan’Iya, congratulated the corps members on completing their one-year mandatory national service.

The governor maintained that their contributions to the socio-economic development of the state, particularly in the areas of healthcare, agriculture, social services, rural development and education, will be forever be appreciated by the Government and the good people of Sokoto State and the country at large.

According to him, “May I therefore register my profound appreciation for your tremendous role in putting in place numerous community-based development projects.

“These commendable efforts of yours are in consonance with our administration’s resolve to provide basic socio-economic amenities to the rural areas with the aim of reducing rural–urban migration.”

He added that the NYSC Health Initiative for Rural Dwellers programme, the fight against HIV/AIDS, polio eradication, care for patients and prevention of coronavirus, as well as environmental sanitation are praise-worthy.

Tambuwal stressed that the state government places high premium on youth development and abhors youth restiveness, saying that that is why we have deliberately carved out the Ministry of Youth and Sports Development out of the Ministry for Social Welfare and Youth Development in order to mainstream youth empowerment and employment generation in our development agenda.

He further disclosed that his administration has always maintained a course of action that guarantees short and long term credit facilities to young entrepreneurs to translate viable ideas into meaningful endeavours.

He, therefore, implored the corps members to utilise the various forms of experiences garnered during the service year and the opportunities available to establish small-scale enterprises, “which will not only make you self-employed but also employers of labour.

“You have been good ambassadors of your respective families and states in

Sokoto State, so I enjoin you to continue as good representatives of Sokoto State by showcasing to your people at home the good virtues of peace, tranquility and mutual co-existence among Nigerians living in Sokoto State irrespective of tribe, ethnic or religious inclination.”

Meanwhile, the state Coordinator of NYSC, Alhaji Muhammad Nakamba, said out of 686 corps members that passed out, six are to repeat the service year, while three have their service extended for misconduct and other offences.

Nakamba, however, said the scheme lost a corps member at the course of the service.

He further disclosed that two corps members-Ajayi Adeola and Yabi Samson from Ekiti and Oyo State respectively-received Sultan meritorious awards.

All the Prospective Corps Members and other Camp participants for the 2022 Batch ‘A’ Orientation Exercise would undergo compulsory COVID-19 RDT Test, and only those that test negative would be allowed entry into the camps.

NYSC Director-General, Major General Shuaibu Ibrahim disclosed this today during a live joint webinar by NYSC/NCDC organised for the 2022 Batch ‘A’ Prospective Corps Members.

The DG disclosed that those that test positive to COVID-19 would be handed over to the NCDC and State Ministry of Health Officials for treatment.

General lbrahim revealed that the collaboration with NCDC has yielded good results, adding that since the partnership started, no casualty has been recorded in any of the Scheme’s Orientation Camps across the country.

The Director-General lauded the Federal Government, Presidential Committee on COVID-19 and the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) for their support for the Scheme, especially in the conduct of hitch-free Orientation Camps since the outbreak of COVID-19 in the country.

Ibrahim advised the PCMs to be security conscious, avoid night journeys, while also counselling them to break any journey that would extend beyond 6:00pm.

“You can pass the night in any NYSC Orientation camp, NYSC Secretariats, Corps Members’ Lodge, Military and security formations.

“I urge you to take advantage of this opportunity because NYSC is a platform for those that are serious.

Posting and other services in NYSC are free, don’t give bribe for posting”, he said.

The DG stated further that Call-up letters for the 2022 Batch ‘A’ Orientation Exercise would be ready on Sunday February 20, 2022.

In her submission, the NCDC/NYSC Project Lead for Safe Camp Reopening, Dr Ladun Okunromade said adequate preparations have been put in place for the safe conduct of the 2022 Batch ‘A’ Orientation Exercise.

She said different variants of COVID-19 are ravaging the world, while Nigeria has recorded over 1,300 cases of Lassa Fever with 46 deaths and 20 healthcare workers infected.

Okunromade advised the Prospective Corps Members and other camp participants to come to camp with facemasks, hand sanitisers; obey physical distancing, maintain personal hygiene and also adhere to all COVID-19 safety guidelines.

The NCDC Director-General, Dr Ifedayo Adetifa in his address said “there will be facilities for vaccination in the camp for those that will take either the first or second dose or third jabs and they to sight their vaccination cards”.

He urged all camp participants to come to the Orientation camps with their vaccination cards.

“This is the 7th edition of safe Camp Re-opening Webinar. We will continue to work hard to facilitate the safe re-opening for all camp participants.

The virus is still with us and we must continue to take both personal and collective responsibility to ensure our safety”, he stated.

Also during the webinar, Corps Member Ajilese Aliyu Adebayo FC/21C/0113 commended the NYSC Management for the safety measures put in place during his Orientation course at the NYSC FCT Orientation Camp in Kubwa, Abuja.

The Coalition for Truth and Justice (CTF) has called on the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission and the office of the National Security Adviser to reveal the identity of the ex-military officer who allegedly forfeited N10bn worth of properties and assets to the Federal Government.

According to the group, the blanket use of ‘military officers’ in such high-profile corruption cases will only demoralise the morale of troops on the frontlines.

In a statement signed by its national coordinator, Barrister Timothy Charles, on Friday, the coalition, therefore, urged the relevant authorities to name the principal suspect which it alleged has their origin from the Office of the NSA.

Charles noted that the use of ‘Military Officer’ is “deceptive, mischievous, and a mockery of the anti-corruption crusade of the Muhammadu Buhari administration”.

He, however, warned that should the EFCC fail to come clean, it would be seen as complicit in this case and Nigerians would soon rise against the anti-graft agency.

The Coalition for Truth and Justice is in receipt of a statement credited to the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) wherein it secured a final forfeiture order on some identified properties and assets valued at over 10 Billion naira from a military officer.

It is curious that the EFCC could elect to be economical with the truth by refusing to avail the identity of the owners of the said properties; instead, it resorted to using the nomenclature “Military Officer.”

The implication of the action of the EFCC is that it has the tendency to send the wrong signal to the military constituency, which might bring about unnecessary and unreasonable suspicion amongst military officers, and the attendant impact it might have on their productivity level.

The Coalition for Truth and Justice views the actions of the EFCC as an affront on our sensibilities by electing to act like it is unaware that the monies and the principal suspect have their origin from the Office of the National Security Adviser.

Therefore the coinage “Military Officer” by the EFCC is bewildering because the indices are clear as regards the fact that the said military officer was acting for a powerful interest in the Office of the National Security Adviser.

We are also alarmed that the EFFC, either by omission or commission, elected to be clever by half. But they failed to realize that their actions have the tendency to affect the psychological state of those in the trenches fighting and sacrificing themselves for the country.

The EFCC must tell the truth to the country regarding the identity of the military officer who was able to amass properties worth billions of naira. It is our considered opinion that the EFCC is economical with the truth by not stating expressly that the funds used in purchasing the said properties were from the Office of the National Security Adviser.

The Coalition for Truth and Justice is using this medium to demand the truth regarding the source of funds used in acquiring the said properties. The blanket use of “Military Officer” is deceptive, mischievous, and a mockery of the anti-corruption crusade of the Muhammadu Buhari administration.

The EFCC must not be seen as complicit in this case. As such, it must, as a matter of urgency, reveal the identity of the military officer as well as the source of the funds used in acquiring the confiscated properties.

It is our position that the term military officer is an embarrassment to the Armed Forces of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, which tends to paint a picture of military officers engaging in corrupt acts, therefore, dampening the morale of our fighting troops involved in various operations across the country.

The Coalition for Truth, as a result of this call on all well-meaning Nigerians to demand the truth from the EFCC in this case before us in the interest of peace and tranquillity for a lot, would be at stake in the country if matters like this are treated with utmost disrespect for the sensibilities of Nigerians who have continually bared the brunt of the actions of unscrupulous elements in positions of authority in the country.
