Kano State Governor Abdullahi Ganduje has hailed his predecessor, Rabiu Kwankwaso, as one of the city’s architects.

Ganduje claimed that he and Kwankwaso are the architects behind Kano’s transformation into a modern city.

The Governor made the remarks during a meeting with All Progressives Congress (APC) stakeholders in the state yesterday.

The Governor said he and Kwankwaso did their best to lift the State while speaking at the State’s Government House.

He went on to say that as governor, he would keep going in the same direction.

“Former Governor, Senator Rabi’u Musa, and I are the architects of modern Kano,” Ganduje says.

“Those responsible for the new face of Kano State are Kwankwaso and Ganduje.

“We (Kwankwaso and Ganduje) have done our best in lifting the face of Kano State. And I will continue to maintain this as a governor of the state.”

The Coalition of Concerned Northern Forum (CCNF) has called on Mallam Mele Kolo Kyari, the Group Managing Director of the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC), and Engr. Farouk Ahmed, the Chief Executive Officer of the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority (MDPRA), to resign within 72 hours due to the country’s persistent fuel scarcity.

The group also demanded that the NNPC management make the genuine and comprehensive names of those responsible for the current petroleum product scarcity across the country public.
A statement jointly issued by the group’s chairman and the spokesman, Mallam Ibrahim Bature and Comrade Abdulsalam Moh’d Kazeem, respectively, noted that, “if our demands are not met in the next three (3) working days, we shall occupy all NNPC zonal offices and its subsidiaries across our region and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).”

The statement explained that it was not just a mere threat, adding that its members would follow up with full action after the expiration of their ultimatum and will serve as litmus test on the part of government on their fight against corruption and indiscipline.

According to the statement, “The mistake made by NNPC under the current management has caused us a lot as a nation; for instance, they claimed it will cost our nation over N200 billion to mop up and sanitize the adulterated fuel and at the same time, we don’t have enough facilities, so they will have to evacuate the bad products first before we can have access to the new products.

“As at today, the said products have already damaged many automobiles, generators, machines and other sundry equipment of citizenry nationwide.”

It lamented that the NNPC tried severally to cover up the importation of the fake fuel and what it called “their gross incompetency”, saying that they all witnessed how those they alleged to have imported the product with high Methanol qualities above their required standards came up with superior point and position to vindicate their companies and maintained that they knew nothing about it

The statement explained that NPCC should bury their head in shame and stop chasing shadows and be patriotic in their dealings with Nigerians.

It noted that NNPC’s quality inspection unit which comprises of GMO, SGS, Geochem and G&G did not conduct any test before the said products were discharged.

The statement explained that with the importation of the fake fuel, the NNPC had dragged the country backward due to what it called “its deliberate errors”.

Prof. Is-haq Oloyede, the Registrar of the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board, has stated that the Integrated Personnel Payroll Information System is unsuitable for the Nigerian university system as a payment platform for university employees.

The former Vice-Chancellor of the University of Ilorin, who has stated categorically that he is not a fan of the Academic Staff Union of Universities, said the union had a point to fight for in terms of their pay.

Oloyede made the remarks during a virtual lecture titled “Synchronising Cacophony: Interrogating Some Issues of Concepts and Perception in the Nigerian Higher Education Topology,” which was held in honor of Professor Peter Okebukola, the former Executive Secretary of the National Universities Commission, on his 71st birthday.

He said, “I am not a fan of the Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, but they have a point here. IPPIS is unsuitable for the university system.

“Let me cite an instance, when I was the VC at the University of Ilorin, I went to Australia on an official assignment and there I met a Nigerian with PhD in an area of Botany where we lacked the manpower.

“I spoke with the man and convinced him of the need to work with us and he agreed. Immediately, I put a call to the Dean of the Faculty of Science and told him about the development and that was how we secured the services of the man. He is now a professor in one of the nation’s universities.”

In the lecture, Oloyede also called for moderation in the setting up of universities by government agencies noting that there were institutions already created which could cater to the training of other agencies.
He added that the government should instead focus on the adequate funding of the already existing universities in the country.

“Also, we must be careful of the number of universities we are having, especially the ones being set up by government agencies and the military.

“We already have the Nigerian Defence Academy which trains officers for all the arms of the military. We also have the Police Academy that trains police officers, it can also help in training para-military men too.

“In that regard, we don’t need more than one or two. If care is not taken, we will soon have the ‘University of Road Safety’ or the ‘University of Civil Defence’. Adequately funding existing universities should be our focus,” Oloyede added.

Justice Ibrahim Muhammad, the Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN), has stated that the judiciary is open to initiatives aimed at improving and strengthening the capacity of judicial officers in the handling of cases involving the country’s emerging crime trend.

The CJN made the statement over the weekend while hosting a visiting delegation of US officials led by Ms. Mary Leonard, the US Ambassador to Nigeria.

Meanwhile, the CJN identified some of the emerging crimes in a statement issued by his media aide, Ahuraka Isah, including cybercrime, cross-jurisdictional infringement of intellectual property rights, and cases involving cybersecurity and espionage.
The CJN added that judges in the country require training on block technology and online dispute resolution as it affects e-commerce which is becoming a challenge due to inadequate awareness of technology and technical abilities and capacity.

He accordingly requested for workshops that would border on Copyright Law in the new digital environment for judicial officers and enforcement of Foreign Arbitral Awards relating to intellectual property disputes.

“Capacity building for our judicial officers is our priority, while the development of the capacity of our research assistants and other staff of the National Judicial Institute, who are fully involved in these training programmes, is also very important.

‘’Your Excellency, without taking the cat out of your bag, I want to assure you that our doors are always wide open to welcome proposals that will be beneficial to the development of the rule of law and the overall growth of the Judiciary of this country.

“The National Judicial Institute will never relent in its efforts to serve as the principal focal point of judicial activities on issues relating to the promotion of efficiency, uniformity and improvement in the quality of judicial services in our courts,’’ the CJN stated.

In his remarks, the U.S. Ambassador stated that the visit was an opportunity to encourage the Nigerian Judiciary to continue collaborating with the United States Mission, including in raising the profile of intellectual property (IP) protection which is essential for Nigeria’s development and international partnerships.

She disclosed that her country is planning to increase its capacity-building engagement on cybersecurity issues, adding that the United States of America is interested in continued collaboration with the Judiciary and courts through its International Narcotics and Law Enforcement Affairs Office (INL) and Office of Overseas Prosecutorial Development, Assistance and Training (OPDAT).

Ms. Leonard hinted that the U.S. was exploring how best to support Nigeria’s judicial processes during the 2023 elections.

The Justices of the Supreme Court, who accompanied the CJN to receive the U.S. delegation are Justice Olukayode Ariwoola, Inyang Okoro, Amina Augie, Ejembi Eko, Uwani Abba-Aji, Mohammed Garba, Helen Ogunwumiju, Abdu Aboki, Adamu Jauro and Emmanuel Agim.

Others are the Administrator of NJI, Justice Salisu Abdullahi; President of National Industrial Court, Justice Benedict Kanyip; Secretary of National Judicial Council, Ahmed Sale; NJI Secretary, Abubakar Maidama; and the Acting Chief Registrar of the Supreme Court, Hajio Bello.

The National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) has appealed to Governor Aminu Bello Masari to come to the aid of the scheme in Katsina State, reportedly enraged by the deteriorating state of its camp facilities.

Ahidjo Yahaya, the State NYSC Coordinator, made the appeal during the passing out ceremony for the 2021 Batch ‘A’ Corps members in the state, saying that the camp facilities were in desperate need of renovation.

Although the state government renovated some camp facilities in 2020, he said, male hostels and camp officials’ quarters remained dilapidated.
He said: “We thank the Katsina State government for the renovation work done on the female hostels. But we are still appealing to the government to carry out renovation work of the remaining camp facilities that were left out during the first face of renovation exercise in 2020.

“We are calling on the governor to renovate the male corps members’ hostel and the already dilapidated camp officials’ quarters and provide an additional administrative block for efficiency and effectiveness in the execution of camp activities”.

Ahidjo explained that a good number of camp officials sleeps outside the camp and that hindered their effectiveness in the discharge of their duties, saying the administrative block when provided will create offices for key camp officials

According to him, “If the quarters are renovated, it will go a long way to help reduce the number of camp officials that sleep outside the camp during the orientation course.”

Professor Banji Akintoye, the leader of Ilana Omo Oodua Worldwide, the umbrella body of Yoruba self-determination groups, has urged Yoruba people around the world not to lose hope in the realization of the agitated Oduduwa Republic, a sovereign nation for Southwestern Nigerians.

This was stated by Mr Maxwell Adeleye, the Self-Determination Movement’s Communications Secretary, in a statement made available to the press on Saturday by the renowned historian and Second Republic senator.
Akintoye, who marked his 87th birthday yesterday, said he had pleaded with his loyalists who wanted to celebrate his birthday anniversary to do otherwise, saying he cannot be celebrating when Igboho, the pioneer of the freedom movement, was still in detention.

According to him, the Nigerian Government lacked the capacity to criminalize the struggle, stressing that the agitation is beyond the manipulation of the current government.

The statement reads in part, “My message to all Yoruba people across the world who are passionate for the country of their own is not to lose hope.

“I am very much convinced that we are on our way to freedom. Our agitation is an idea whose time has come.

“We shall keep the struggle alive, and beyond the manipulation of the Nigerian government.

“We won’t allow the Federal Government of Nigeria to criminalize our struggle. The Yoruba people worldwide are urged never to be deterred in the struggle.

“Many Yoruba patriots worldwide planned to celebrate my birthday but I pleaded with them not to do so in honour of my son and one of the heroes of our struggle, Chief Sunday Adeyemo, fondly called Sunday Ighoho, by all of us. I cannot be celebrating a birthday when Igboho is in detention”.
