Abiodun: We’ll resurrect Ogun BOI’s matching fund to help agro-allied industry grow.

Prince Dapo Abiodun, the Governor of Ogun State, has said that his government would reactivate the OGSG-Bank of Industry Matching Fund in order to empower and mobilize micro, small, and medium-scale businesses in the state.

Abiodun revealed this at his office after being named the first Grand Patron of the Ogun State Chambers of Commerce, Industry, Mines, and Agriculture (OGUNCCIMA).

According to the governor, his government would re-strategize with the Bank of Industry for the benefit of businesses in the state, especially those in the agro-allied sector.

“We’ve determined to empower and activate micro, small, and medium-scale firms; we’re re-strategizing with the Bank of Industry for the benefit of businesses in the agro-allied sectors,” he said.

While pledging that his administration would do more to improve the state’s agro-allied sector, he urged the Ogun State Chambers of Commerce, Industry, Mines and Agriculture, as well as other key stakeholders, to join hands with his administration in its efforts to continue to attract Foreign Direct Investment into the state.

The governor also said that his government will continue to build highways connecting the state to neighboring states, revealing that the continuing agro cargo airport and the Agbara-Atan-Lusada road would be finished by the year’s end.

“We will continue to build highways that link us to neighboring states, as we have done with the Ijebu-Ode-Epe road, the Abeokuta-Siun Interchange route, and the Agbara-Atan-Lusada road, all of which are expected to be finished by September this year.” “Let me promise you that our International Agro Cargo Airport will be operational by September 2022 or earlier,” Abiodun added.

On Tuesday in Lagos, President Muhammadu Buhari (retd.) asked the Minister of Finance, Budget and National Planning, Dr Zainab Ahmed, to seek special funds for the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport’s second runway.

The President’s appeal came at a time when the nation is burdened by a N39.56 trillion foreign debt.

The President also directed the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory to complete the documentation of the approved 12,000 hectares of land to accommodate the runway and other developmental projects, speaking at the inauguration of the new Terminal Building at Murtala Muhammed International Airport in Lagos.

He also charged the Minister of Aviation with expediting the airport concession program, improving aviation practice in the country, and bringing the aviation sector up to international standards.

Garba Shehu, the President’s Senior Special Assistant on Media and Publicity, revealed this in a statement headed, ‘Aviation: President Buhari asks finance minister to hunt for special financing for Abuja airport second runway, inaugurates new terminal building at MMIA,’ which he signed Tuesday.

Buhari noted that the completion and delivery of five brand new international airport terminals since 2015, when they were at 11 percent completion, aligns perfectly with the Aviation Roadmap developed in 2016 to establish critical infrastructure, such as a National Carrier and a maintenance, repairs, and overhaul center, as well as improved airport terminals through concession.

Despite limited resources, the President praised the regime’s efforts in interstate rail links, road networks, agriculture, electricity, and telecommunications as exceptional.

Buhari expressed optimism that the new terminal in Lagos, which features 66 check-in counters, sixteen immigration desks on arrival, twenty-eight immigration desks on departure, and eight security screening points, among other amenities, will contribute significantly to the country’s socio-political and economic prosperity.

He went on to say that the improvements will expand airport operations and management services to around 14 million passengers per year, generate 3,000 direct and indirect employment, increase foreign direct investment inflows, and result in exponential growth in the GDP.

He expressed gratitude to the Chinese government and people, via the China Export-Import Bank and CCECC Nigeria Limited, for their dedication and help in completing the project.

The President also praised the Federal Ministry of Aviation and its agencies, especially the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria, for their tireless efforts in bringing the project to fruition.

“A new era of safety, security, and comfort has been ushered into the Nigerian aviation sector with the implementation of this project,” he stated, “and I am convinced that it will become better with the passage of time.”

Babajide Sanwo-Olu, the Governor of Lagos State, said it was instructive that Lagos State had witnessed the evolution of three major infrastructure development projects in one day that will change the Nigerian landscape, while commending the President, Major-General Muhammadu Buhari, for the infrastructural renewal and redevelopment required for a city like Lagos.

The Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited’s anticipated withdrawal of N242.53 billion in gasoline subsidy from the Federation Account this month is causing concern among states as the Federation Accounts Allocation Committee meets on Tuesday (today).

The 36 state finance commissioners are expected to meet today for the monthly allocation sharing meeting between the three levels of government, according to reports.

The NNPC had already informed the states that it will deduct a total of N242.53 billion in March (this month) as the amount paid on Premium Motor Spirit (commonly known as gasoline) subsidy.

Subsidy deductions by the NNPC have often lowered the amount shared by FAAC, putting further strain on state governments’ resources as they struggle to fulfill their responsibilities, particularly salary payments.

When asked about the efforts that states are doing to satisfy their responsibilities and pay wages, David Olofu, Chairman of the Forum of Finance Commissioners, refused to comment, but did say that the FAAC meeting this month will be held on Tuesday.

He told one of our journalists, “You’re trying to squeeze water out of the rock.”

When asked about the date of the FAAC meeting this month, Olofu, who is also the Benue State Commissioner for Finance, said, “Tomorrow (today, Tuesday).”

States have protested the NNPC’s low payments to FAAC, which were a result of the oil company’s fuel subsidy deductions.

The oil company maintained that the amount will be recovered from February 2022 revenues due for sharing at the March 2022 FAAC meeting, despite the fact that it defined the planned N242.53 billion subsidy reduction for this month as a value deficiency.

“The value deficit recovery on the importation of PMS in December 2021 amounted to N210.38 billion,” it added.

Remember that the NNPC did not send any money to the FAAC in February this year because of its massive fuel subsidy expenditure and consequent withdrawal from the Federation Account.

State governors slammed the NNPC for not remitting any monies at the FAAC meeting last month on March 3, 2022.

Kayode Fayemi, the Chairman of the Nigeria Governors’ Forum and the Governor of Ekiti State, has also questioned how the oil company could claim profit while failing to satisfy its FAAC duties.

During the Nigerian Governors’ Forum session on natural resources at the Nigeria International Energy Summit 2022 in Abuja, Fayemi and other governors revealed this.

He explicitly said that the NNPC made no payment to the federation at the previous Federation Accounts Allocation Committee meeting in February.
The governor had added, “We recently had the Federation Accounts Allocation Committee meeting a few of days ago, and the NNPC contributed nothing to the Federation Accounts this month.”

Following the NNPC’s zero remittance in February, some states were reported to have found it impossible to pay employees.

According to media sources, the Kano State Government, which had authorized a N30,000 minimum salary for its employees, has returned to the former minimum wage of N18,000.

“Given the current financial condition, the government would find it impossible to execute the consolidated pay for the month of March, which is merely a temporary solution,” State Commissioner for Information Muhammadu Garba is quoted as saying.

In Kogi State, the state government established a new minimum wage for its employees, which resulted in a percentage payout.

Godwin Anya, the State Chairman of the Nigeria Labour Congress in Benue, claimed the state has been paying its employees in installments for some time.

Various oil sector players informed our reporter that until the fuel subsidy scheme was abolished, the NNPC’s deductions would likely continue, given the firm had been Nigeria’s only importer of gasoline for more than four years.

Throughout the years, the oil company has also borne the burden of the gasoline subsidy. The real cost of the product is far greater than the official pump price of N162-N165/litre.

Billy Gillis-Harry, President of the Petroleum Products Retail Outlets Owners Association of Nigeria, said that the true cost of fuel without subsidies was generally somewhat more than that of diesel.

According to him, if it weren’t for the subsidy, PMS would be selling at N550 to N600 per litre because to the surge in crude prices.

Ebun-Olu Adegboruwa, a human rights activist, has petitioned the Lagos State Government to apprehend the perpetrators of the murder of BRT rider Bamise Ayanwola.

The Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN) sought N500 million in compensation for the family in a statement on Tuesday.

Adegboruwa, on the other hand, praised state officials for following through on their pledge to prosecute Andrew Ominnikoron.

The driver was arrested and charged with rape and murder at the Lagos State High Court. He was remanded in custody.

Sanwo-Olu was admonished by the counsel to follow through on his pledge to equip all public transportation buses with security features.

Adegboruwa praised Nigerians for continuing to strive for justice, “particularly civil society groups and the media.”

APC Chairmanship: Yari discusses dropping out of races and zoning

Abdulaziz Yari, the former Governor of Zamfara State, says he is still running for the All Progressives Congress (APC) National Chairmanship, despite reports that he has stepped down.

Yari stated this to journalists shortly after a meeting with the APC Senate Caucus on Tuesday in Abuja.

In response to reports in the media that the party had already zoned the position to the North-Central, Yari said he was unaware of any such arrangement.

“I have no knowledge of the zoning issue because it was not communicated to me; I only learned about it through social media.”

“I’ve chosen the form, and we’re all set to meet at the polls,” he said.

Yari, who dislikes zoning, claims that members of the party are attempting to break the zoning curse by embracing true democracy.

Earlier in the meeting with the caucus, Yari stated that he was in the Senate to seek senators’ support.

“I’ve come to ask for your assistance. He stated, “I believe we have been working together and can continue to work together.”

Yari stated that the party required people who had been through the process and could be trusted to manage its affairs.

“We need people who have been trusted in the past, who have been given responsibilities and have delivered on those responsibilities.”

“It’s not about where you come from; it’s about what you’ve done in the past and what people think you can do,” he explained.

The APC, according to Deputy Senate President Ovie Omo-Agege, is at a fork in the road.

“That’s a bad tidbit of information. However, the good news is that we are about to overcome these difficulties. The closer we get to Saturday, the higher our chances and our dreams of overcoming all of those obstacles grow.

“All we want in the National Assembly is a strong and unified APC that emerges from this convention and goes on to win the next elections,” he said.

“As a party, we have a duty to disappoint our opponents, the PDP.”

“We want a leader who can speak truth to power, a leader who can arrest and bring together every ego, a leader who can make us understand that we are larger together than we are individually,” he added.

Plateau Assembly declares ex-speaker’s seat vacant due to defection

During Tuesday’s plenary session, the Plateau State House of Assembly declared Hon. Ayuba Abok’s seat in the Jos East constituency vacant.

Abok is the house’s immediate previous speaker.

Rt. Hon. Yakubu Sanda, the current Speaker of the House, who declared Abok’s seat empty, said the decision was based on a letter from the state chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) requesting that the seat be declared vacant.

Abok left the APC last week and joined the People’s Democratic Party (PDP).

“In accordance with Section 109(1) of the legislation, I thus proclaim Rt. Hon. Abok’s seat vacant,” Hon.
