The Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Ogunwusi, and ex-National Commissioner of the Independent National Electoral Commission, Prof. Lai Olurode, on Wednesday, congratulated Osun State Governor, Ademola Adeleke, on his victory at the Supreme Court which affirmed his election.

A congratulatory statement signed by Ooni’s spokesperson, Moses Olafare, then urged Adeleke to develop a robust partnership with the Federal government in the interest of the Osun people.

The royal father also advised Adeleke to be magnanimous in victory and lead with integrity, wisdom, and compassion.

The statement read in parts, “The House of Oduduwa is thrilled to extend her heartfelt congratulations to you on your remarkable and well-deserved victory as declared by the esteemed Supreme Court of Nigeria. This momentous ruling is a triumph for democracy and the will of the Good People Of The State Of Osun.

“The people of the state have placed their trust in you, and we have no doubt that you will work tirelessly to fulfil the aspirations and dreams of citizenry. Your passion for public service, your vision for progress, and your unwavering dedication to the welfare of the people will undoubtedly guide you in the path ahead.

Similarly, ex-INEC national commissioner, Olurode, in his congratulatory message to Adeleke, noted that the governor had passed through difficult electoral and legal hurdles and advised him to quickly settle down to commence serious work of responding to the cries of the people in terms of infrastructural deficit.

In considering people for appointments, he also advised Adeleke to be all-inclusive and avoid winner takes all approach that may create instability.

Olurode equally commended the former governor, Mr. Adegboyega Oyetola, for being a gentleman who never sought violence in his pursuit of electoral justice.

Senate Presidency: Allow incoming senators to exercise their constitutional rights – Group

0

According to the Amalgamated All Progressives Congress (APC) Support Groups, the race for President of the Tenth Senate is a constitutional matter, and senators-elect must be allowed to exercise their constitutional rights to vote for leaders of their choice.

Dr Kailani Muhammad, the group’s Director-General, stated this on Wednesday at a news conference in Abuja on the issues surrounding the election of the 10th Senate President.

Muhammad, who is also the National Chairman of the Tinubu/Shettima Network (TSN), described the endorsement of Sen. Godswill Akpabio as the APC’s preferred candidate for the Senate presidency as rumours.

“The rumors of endorsement are a total distraction from the tenets of democracy and must be rejected by all and sundry.” We must allow the senators-elect to exercise their free will.

“Senators-elect must be allowed to exercise their constitutional rights to vote for aspirants of their choice in the Senate Chambers,” he said.

Following a meeting of the NWC on Monday at the party’s national secretariat in Abuja, the APC leadership reached a decision on the two key positions in the National Assembly.

Following the meeting, the party’s National Publicity Secretary, Felix Morka, stated that the NWC reached a compromise on the zoning arrangement for the 10th National Assembly.

“The All Progressives Congress (APC) National Working Committee met today, Monday, May 8, 2023, to consider reports of consultations and meetings held with the president-elect, His Excellency, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, other party leaders, and stakeholders on zoning arrangements for 10th National Assembly leadership positions,” Morka said.

“The NWC took note with respect of the outcome of the meetings held between the president-elect and the NWC leadership.” The NWC called for more and better consultation with relevant stakeholders in order to ensure the support of National Assembly leadership aspirants and party members across the country.

“The NWC was informed of the following zoning arrangement: Senator Godswill Akpabio (Akwa Ibom) is the Senate President for the South-South; Senator Barau Jubrin (Kano) is the Deputy Senate President for the North-West; Hon. Abass Tajudeen (Kaduna) is the Speaker of the House of Representatives for the North-West; and Hon. Ben Kalu (Abia) is the Deputy Speaker for the South-East.

“We urge our party leaders, members, and all Nigerians to continue to work for our country’s peace and progress during and beyond the current period of leadership transition.”

Muhammad recalled that the APC leadership took a stand on the issue of zoning the 10th Senate presidency to the South-South about two days ago.

“Sen. Godswill Akpabio used this to claim that the party has chosen him as its preferred candidate for the prestigious position.” To set the record straight, there is currently no such thing as zoning in the APC.

“To allay Nigerians’ and indeed aspirants’ fears, our great party’s Publicity Secretary, Mr Felix Snooker, came out on Channels Television to debunk the statement, likening it to a damaging rumour.”

“Felix categorically stated that the party and aspirants are still talking with other stakeholders and negotiating to see how the issue can be resolved amicably so that the country can move forward.”

“Felix categorically stated that the party is working toward a peaceful resolution of the issue, in order to ensure a developed Nigeria free of rancor.”

“We recall the recent scenario during the APC primaries where President Muhammadu Buhari and the National Chairman of the APC, Sen. Abdullahi Adamu, endorsed Senate President, Ahmed Lawan, as Presidential Candidate, but President-elect, Bola Ahmed Tinubu, eventually emerged as the winner,” he said.

A cross-section of senators-elect from various political parties have also rejected outside influence in their presiding officers’ election.

The senators-elect insisted on following the constitutional provisions on the emergence of presiding officers during the induction program organized for them by the National Assembly management in collaboration with the National Institute for Legislative and Democratic Studies.

Senator-elect Ned Nwoko, who was elected on the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) platform to represent Delta North Senatorial District, said members of the 10th Senate would reject any attempt by the executive to pocket the legislature.

“The overwhelming majority of the senators-elect believe that we must be independent,” Nwoko said. That is the only way to hold the executive accountable.

“The legislature is not meant to be a tool for the executive. Some of us were already well-established before we came here. As a result, we are not cowards. We are very self-sufficient.”

Senator-elect AbdulRaham Kawu-Sumaila, a former minority leader in the House of Representatives who now represents Kano South on the platform of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP), has stated that any attempt to impose presiding officers on the 10th National Assembly will fail.

“When it comes to the Senate presidency, we should stick to the constitution.”

“The constitution contains a clear and express provision that allows members of the National Assembly to choose their presiding officers among themselves, regardless of party affiliation, religious or ethnic considerations.”

EFCC arrests former Minister of Power, Sale Mamman

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission has detained and arrested Sale Mamman, a former minister of power, in connection with an alleged N22 billion fraud.

Mamman, who served as a minister for President Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retd.) from 2019 to 2021, was reportedly detained on Wednesday at the EFCC headquarters in Abuja after showing up for questioning.

Mamman had been fired by Buhari in 2021 after a minor cabinet shuffle.

According to EFCC sources, the former minister is being questioned in relation to an investigation into alleged corruption totaling N22 billion during the execution of some power projects.

“The former minister is being held on suspicion of embezzling and diverting about N22 billion.

According to a source, “He is under investigation for allegedly conspiring to divert N22 billion and share among themselves with some ministry employees in charge of the accounts of the Zungeru and Mambilla Hydro Electric Power projects.”

The source claims that properties in Nigeria and abroad that were allegedly connected to the suspects were found during the investigations, and that millions of naira and dollars were also reportedly recovered.

Wilson Uwujaren, the EFCC spokesperson, did not return phone calls or a text message when our correspondent tried to get in touch with him for comment.

According to reports, the EFCC had opened an inquiry into the contentious $5.8 billion Mambilla Hydro Electric Power project contract with Sunrise Power in November 2022.

The Sunrise litigation on the project is the only issue delaying its start, according to the current Minister of Power, Abubakar Aliyu.

“The EFCC has taken an interest in the situation, and we have provided them with information on it. The power project’s history has been provided to them. Our attorneys have communicated with the anti-graft organization. We are powerless to take any action unless we can end the legal battle.

In a 2022 report, Aliyu stated, “I don’t think the investor will bring his money where there is an encumbrance.”

Randy’s father detained for allegedly impregnating, raping daughter for 3 yrs

The Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), Kogi Command, has arrested a 41-year-old father for allegedly defiling and raping his 16-year-old daughter.

After arraigning the suspect on Wednesday at the NSCDC Command Headquarters in Lokoja, the state’s Commandant, Ahmad Gandi, stated that the command received a complaint from an NGO on May 5.

According to him, the complaint was filed in relation to a case of defilement, rape, and incest in which the suspect is the victim’s biological father.

The commandant stated that the abusive act had been ongoing for three years, from 2020 to 2023, since the victim was 16 years old.

Gandi stated that the victim’s younger sister advised her to commit suicide or kill their father in order to escape the abusive act.

The commandant stated that the father admitted to committing the act and that he would be charged in court after the investigation was completed.

Gandi praised the NGO for reporting the case to the command, while urging other victims in society who were dying in silence to come forward and report similar cases.

According to the News Agency of Nigeria, the NSCDC did not allow journalists to reveal the identity and names of both the victim and the suspect due to the sensitivity of the case in order to avoid stigmatizing the victim.

The victim told reporters that she had been sexually abused by her father since 2020 when her mother left the house.

“It happened in 2020 when my mother left home, and my father has been sexually abusing me since then.”

My father impregnated me in 2021 and took me to a clinic where they aborted the pregnancy I had for him.

“I couldn’t leave the house because of my younger sister because I was afraid my father would do the same thing to my sister,” the victim explained.

“After aborting the pregnancy, he continued the sexual abuse until I couldn’t take it anymore, which I had to report to an NGO, who reported the case to NSCDC,” the victim explained.

The suspect, for his part, admitted to the act, saying he was hypnotized after his wife left him in 2020.

“I did commit the act, but I have no idea how I did it.” I adore my wife and have begged her to return home for the past three years.

“It’s the same stage I was in when my mother left my father that my wife left my children for me and left.” “I love my wife, but she never returns to me,” the suspect said.

Mr Abdulrasak Ibrahim, Executive Director of the NGO, the Islamic Centre for Communication and Creative Thought (ItrippleCT), praised the NSCDC for doing a fantastic job in arresting the suspect.

Ibrahim stated that after learning about the problem, the victim was immediately relocated to a safe location away from her father’s home to protect her from further abuse.

Speaking on the matter, Barr LilianOkolo, Chairperson, Federation of Women Lawyers (FIDA), Kogi, and Amb. Idris Muraina, Chairman, Kogi Network of NGO (KONGONET), both commended the NSCDC for their proactiveness in handling the case.

Okolo assured that FIDA would ensure that the suspect was brought to justice as a deterrent to other irresponsible fathers out there.

Muraina assured that the NGOs in Kogi would continue to use professionalism in such cases to protect the rights of the girl-child and obtain justice for her.

He urged other victims of such acts who were going through such traumatic experiences in the state to speak up, assuring them that justice would be served.

The KONGONET Chairman also urged the state and federal governments, as well as the international community, to establish a “Safe Keep” facility in the state where victims of such crimes could be accommodated for the duration of the case.

“As of now, we don’t have such “safe-keeping” facilities in Kogi where victims of gender-based violence can be kept during the trying period,” Muraina said.

CBN Responds To Scammers’ Behavior, BVN Doesn’t Expire

It has been made abundantly clear by the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) that the Bank Verification Number (BVN) that was issued by the Bank in collaboration with the Nigeria Inter-Bank Settlement System (NIBSS) does not have an expiration date. This is in contrast to the bogus news that has been going around claiming that it would expire after a period of ten years.
“We would like to make it clear that contrary to these claims, the BVN that is issued in Nigeria does not have an expiration date.”
Once a customer’s biometrics have been captured and enrolled in the database of NIBSS, the BVN is maintained for the customer’s entire life, according to a statement released by the Acting Director of the Corporate Communications Department of the apex Bank, Dr. Isa Abdulmumin. “However, the Regulatory Framework for BVN issued by the CBN in 2021 stipulates that customers can only change their records due to certain conditions spelled out in the document and after being cleared by relevant authorities. This means that customers can only change their records if they meet both of these requirements.
“Therefore, we strongly encourage customers of banks throughout the country, particularly those whose biometrics have already been stored in the system, to continue making use of their one-of-a-kind identifiers because these credentials are good for the rest of their lives.Follow the directions given to you.”

Traditionalists from Osun pledge their support for Adeleke

The Osun State Traditional Religious Worshippers Association’s leadership promised the state’s helmsman that they would support him in carrying out the necessary rituals to further make Ademola Adeleke’s administration more peaceful.

This was stated in a message of congratulations from the religious organization to Adeleke on his victory at the Supreme Court, which upheld his election at the governorship election on July 16, 2022. The message was signed by the organization’s president, Oluseyi Atanda, and was obtained in Osogbo on Wednesday.

The traditionalists then urged Adeleke to ensure peace among the state’s residents of different faiths, adding that the governor must also look out for the welfare of the group’s members by supporting their initiatives to keep the state safe through various spiritual interventions.

The group also gave the governor the advice to keep up the good policies of his predecessors and to stop all the bad ones in order for the state to advance in the nation’s league of states.

Osun PDP elects a new executive as Adeleke calls for unity.
We congratulate Senator Ademola Adeleke, our governor, on his victory at the Supreme Court, which upheld his election, the statement said. God appointed him governor, and we will keep working hard to appease our ancestors in order for him to rule the state in peace.

“As a nonpartisan religious organization, we pledge Governor Adeleke our steadfast support. In the interest of the state, he should continue with the successful policies of those who came before him in office rather than changing any that he feels are ineffective.

“All the rituals required to make the land more tranquil will be performed during the term of our amiable governor, and we are confident that he will extend hands of friendship to us and give us a chance to interact with his administration. He has our unwavering support, we promise.

On Wednesday, Bola Tinubu, the incoming president, met with the All Progressives Congress-backed candidates for Speaker and Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives.

Before leaving the country for Europe, Tinubu, a former governor of Lagos State, had meetings with the candidates for the House leadership, Hon. Tajudeen Abbas and Hon. Benjamin Kalu.

Abbas and Kalu were presented to the President-elect by the Joint Task Team of the House, according to a statement by Tunde Rahman, Tinubu’s media representative.

Tinubu, who left the nation shortly after the meeting for a working trip to Europe, is expected to “finetune the transition plans and programmes” while there.

“The President-elect will meet with investors and other important allies during the visit with the aim of promoting investment opportunities in the nation and his administration’s readiness to support a business-friendly environment through policies and regulations.

Meetings have already been scheduled with representatives from the manufacturing, agriculture, technology, and energy sectors of the European business community.

According to the statement, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu “hopes to convince them that Nigeria is ready to do business under his leadership through mutually-beneficial partnerships premised on job creation and skill acquisition.”

According to rumors, the All Progressives Congress declared Senator Godwin Akpabio, the former minister of Niger Delta affairs, as its unanimous choice for the Senate presidency in the 10th Assembly on Monday.

As the next Deputy Senate President, the ruling party elected Senator Jibrin Barau, Chairman of the Senate Committee on Appropriations.

The APC zoned the Speaker of the House of Representatives to the North-West and the Senate presidency to the South-South.

Tajudeen Abbas, a lawmaker from Kaduna, was given the position of Speaker of the House of Representatives in the Green Chamber, and Ben Kalu, a representative-elect from the South-East, won the position of Deputy Speaker.

Breaking: Ben Kalu secures significant endorsement for position of deputy speaker

0

Abuja, FCT – Hon. Benjamin Kalu has received another significant endorsement less than 24 hours after being proposed for the position of Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives.
On May 10, the Igbo Mandate Movement Group (IMMG) announced that they would set up camp with the representative of Abia State’s Bende federal constituency.
The IMMG national coordinator, Igboeli Arinze, reportedly said in a statement that those scheming to thwart Kalu’s candidacy are setting out on a journey with no hope of turning back. He also questioned why Kalu was rejected as Deputy Speaker by the Amalgamated Igbo Youth Progressive Forum. As Arinze put it

“Following the choice of Honourable Benjamin Kalu for the position of Deputy Speaker, we are aware that certain forces who have never put the progress of the Igbo nation as their priority has begun sponsoring attacks against the person of Kalu and his candidacy, this concerted media onslaughts were designed to dent the credibility of Kalu and force the leadership of the APC to rescind its decision, this, however, is dead on arrival.”

Arinze further noted that Kalu had played a pivotal role in the progress of the lower chamber of the national assembly and has been a contributory factor in passing bills and raising motions.
He said:

“Kalu’s imprints on the floor of the green chamber via his motions and bills are indeed quite impressive with over 40 motions and 20 bills with two receiving assent from the president.” “It is also important to note that on capacity, Benjamin Kalu’s Constituency projects are indeed top notch and we challenge these detractors to take a trip to Bende and verify his impact.”

Ben Kalu Has Decided To Withdraw From The Speakership Race, And Has Revealed His Plans For The Next Step In The Recall that Honorable Benjamin Kalu has stated that he will no longer compete for the seat of Speaker of the House of Representatives in the upcoming election. The All Progressives Congress leadership came to the conclusion that the position should be zoned to the northwest, and Kalu’s decision was consistent with that conclusion. During this time, the position of Deputy Speaker has been set aside for the southeast zone, and Kalu has been proposed as a candidate for the position.
