Tajudeen Abbas, the All Progressives Congress (APC) preferred candidate for Speaker of the House of Representatives, received a firm reminder from the APC National Chairman, Abdullahi Adamu, during a recent visit to the APC National Secretariat in Abuja.

According to reports, Adamu clarified that Abbas is currently a candidate for the speakership, not the speaker, as some have claimed.

Adamu emphasized that several candidates for the position of speaker have approached him and the National Working Committee (NWC) for assistance.

He clarified the procedure for assuming the speakership, emphasizing that Abbas would officially become a speaker on the day of the President-elect and Commander-in-Chief of the 10th National Assembly’s proclamation.

Adamu stated that the speaker’s appointment would be determined by an election overseen by the Clerk of the National Assembly.

While thanking Abbas for his visit, Adamu emphasized the importance of continuing consultations and discussions to ensure a satisfactory resolution for the National Assembly leadership positions.

He acknowledged the presence of other candidates for Senate President and Speaker of the House and wished them luck.

“I want to make one correction so that we are not misrepresented,” Adamu said. Several of you have mentioned Hon. Abbas as the speaker. Please remember that he is one of the candidates. On the day of the proclamation, he will become a speaker.

“The laws that govern that office are very clear, and he will earn it on the day of the proclamation by the president and commander in chief of the 10th National Assembly.”

“An election will be held by the Clerk of the National Assembly.” There is no other choice but to vote.

“That nomenclature becomes most appropriate when he comes out of that election and they raise his hand, and when he is sworn in by the speaker.” Wait. “Keep up the good work,” he said.

“After reporting to the National Working Committee, I reported our deliberations with the President-elect and leaders such as the Vice President-elect, Senate President, Speaker; my humble self, the National Chairman of the Party, my deputy north, deputy south, and the National Secretary of the Party.”

“It was clear in our declaration that there is a need for additional and improved consultations so that we can talk as much as possible to massage political egos and end up with what we want with National Assembly leadership in both Chambers.”

“We have received all of the other candidates for Senate President and Speaker of the House of Representatives.” “I wish you the best of luck on behalf of my colleagues,” Adamu said.

In his remarks, Abbas praised Adamu for his influential role in ensuring the party’s victory and the election of the President-elect.

He promised to protect the interests of the party, the government, and the Nigerian people. Before the June 13 leadership election, Abbas urged Adamu and the NWC to use their positions to bring all contestants to the table for constructive dialogue and unity.

In a press conference, Abbas reaffirmed the party’s decision on his candidature, claiming that no changes had occurred to his knowledge.

He emphasised their commitment to reaching out and making the necessary efforts to ensure a unified and harmonious National Assembly.

Former Akwa Ibom Governor Godswill Akpabio and his senatorial delegation met with Rivers State Governor Nyesom Wike.

According to sources, the meeting took place at Governor Wike’s residence in Abuja.

It should be noted that Akpabio, who previously served as Minister of Niger Delta Affairs, was nominated as a candidate for Senate President by the All Progressives Congress (APC). Barau Jibrin was also suggested as a possible candidate for Deputy Senate President.

Governor Wike is reported to have endorsed Akpabio’s Senate candidature. This move is expected to result in Rivers State Senators-elect voting in favour of Akpabio.

Despite being a member of the opposition People’s Democratic Party (PDP), Governor Wike has developed relationships with APC leader Bola Tinubu.

This relationship arose as a result of Wike’s disagreement with PDP presidential candidate Atiku Abubakar in the recently concluded 2023 elections.

“This is the time for me to support him (Akpabio) because he supported me when I wanted to be the governor of Rivers State,” Wike said after the visit, according to a statement issued by the Akpabio Campaign Media Office in Abuja.

“If we truly want to move this country forward from where it is now, I see nothing wrong with the ruling party selecting who it believes can work with the President-elect as the Senate President of the 10th Assembly.” We are working together on this Akpabio and Barau project to ensure their success.

“Akpabio backed me up during my governorship campaign.” He was there for me the entire time and made sure I won. I don’t repay good with evil.

“It’s time for him to pay. I will support him until he is elected Senate President. Our team would soon meet to discuss your aspiration.

“Let me congratulate you on ending your tenure as governor of River State on a high,” Akpabio said, thanking Wike for his support.

“You have done a good job for your people and Nigerians.” History will be kind to you as you leave the office in the coming days. Nigerians know you for your belief in justice, equity, and fairness.”

Governor Yahaya Bello of Kogi State has given his approval for the immediate reappointment of several key officials in the state.

According to a statement that was issued by the Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, Onogwu Muhammed, the officials in question were those who had resigned in order to run for the governorship of the All Progressives Congress in the state during the primary elections that took place one month ago.

These individuals include Jibrin Momoh, a former state accountant general; Pharm. Jamiu Abdulkarim Asuku, a former chief of staff to the governor; Yakubu Okala, a former state auditor-general; Idris Asiwaju Asiru, a former commissioner for finance, budget, and economic planning; and Barr Momodu Ozigi Deedat, a former commissioner for local government and chieftaincy affairs.

Onogwu referred to a notice that was dated Monday and signed by Dr. (Mrs.) Folashade Ayoade, who serves as the Secretary to the State Government.

According to the statement, “Their reappointment is, however, subject to the screening and confirmation of the House of Assembly. Following that, they will be able to resume their previous offices.”

“Please take into consideration that these individuals had previously sent in letters of resignation in the month of March, and that the Governor has carefully considered and given his approval to their reappointment.

“We are confident that the reappointment of these officials will further enhance the efficiency and effectiveness of the state government in delivering its mandate to the people of Kogi State,” the statement read. “We are also confident that this reappointment will bring about positive change.”

The Labour Party has appealed a Federal High Court decision from Kano that declared Alex Otti, the newly elected governor of Abia State, ineligible for the March 18 governorship election.

The court’s decision resulted from a case filed by Mr. Ibrahim Haruna Ibrahim against the Labour Party and the Independent National Electoral Commission, with case number FHC/KN/CS/107/2023.

The court ruled that Alex Otti, the newly elected governor of Abia State, and other Labour Party candidates were not chosen in accordance with the rules outlined in the 2022 electoral act.

The Labour Party’s failure to submit its membership register to INEC at least 30 days before their primaries was one of the key issues raised in the lawsuit. The court deemed this a violation and invalidated the entire selection process.

Additionally, the applicant asked the court to intervene in order to annul the Certificate of Returns given to each Labour Party candidate and order INEC to declare the first runner-up the winner in each constituency won by the Labour Party.

A party that has not complied with the electoral act’s requirements cannot be considered to have a candidate in an election and, as a result, cannot be declared the winner, Justice Yunusa ruled. As a result, the votes given to the first defendant (Labour Party) were ineffective votes. The judge refused to mandate the issuance of a Certificate of Return to any Abia State resident, stating that “the parties that participated in Abia State are not parties before this court.”

In response to the decision, Umeh Kalu, SAN, the legal representative for the Labour Party, filed an appeal on May 22 asking the court to overturn the trial court’s decision.
